  • Sad! Hired men beat maid to death in Lagos

A lady identified as Shade Moke, 41, has been detained by policemen in Bariga, Lagos for allegedly contracting three men to beat up her maid Halimot, 17.

The teenager died from the beating, it was gathered.

Also detained were the suspects John Okpara, Issac Gboyelade and one Akinseye alleged to have committed the offence on February 28.

It was gathered that the woman accused the girl of stealing N2,000 she gave her for daily contribution (Ajoo) but the deceased was said to have claimed the money got missing.

In annoyance, the woman allegedly beat up the girl and also allegedly hired the three men to torture her in order to get her to say where the money was.

It was learnt that the three hired men “tortured the girl until she collapsed”.

On being told on the phone by the contracted men that the maid had fainted, Moke hurried back from the market and rushed the girl from one health facility to another before she was confirmed dead at Gbagada General Hospital.

She was buried on February 29.

It was gathered that Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN), an NGO, filed a formal complaint at the police division leading to the arrest of the suspects.

The woman denied the allegation, insisting that the girl’s parents were duly notified of her death and attended her burial at Atan cemetery.

Police spokesman Bala Elkana confirmed the arrest of the suspects, saying that the male suspects “claimed that the girl went into convulsion after drinking water.

Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Yaba for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution. The suspects will soon be charged to court,” said Elkana.

  • Judge opens account in maid’s name, saves N870m – ICPC

A Nigerian judge, Margaret Igbeta, who retired as president of the Benue state Customary Court of Appeal, opened an account 11 years ago at Ecobank, in the name of her maid and saved N870million($2.4million) during the period.

Her bulging bank account understandably drew the attention of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which has rushed to the Federal High Court in Abuja for the interim forfeiture of N840 million left in the account.

Igbeta is being accused by ICPC investigators of opening an account in the name of her housemaid, Theodora Atsu on the 5th of March, 2008, with an initial deposit of N8 million.

Mrs. Rasheedat A. Okoduwa, spokesman of the commission said Monday night: “The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has requested a Federal High Court, Abuja, to order the interim forfeiture of N840 million traced to a retired President of the Benue State Customary Court of Appeal, Mrs. Margaret Igbeta.

“The Commission, in an ex-parte motion filed at the court, said that the order would stop Mrs. Igbeta from accessing the money alleged to have been obtained through fraudulent activities in the course of her official duties.

“ICPC noted that the request for the interim forfeiture is pursuant to Section 48 (1), (2) and (3) (a) and (b) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and Section 6 (6)(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

“The retired President of the Customary Court of Appeal was accused of operating a proxy fixed deposit account in the name of her maid, one Theodora Atsu, with Ecobank Plc, where she accumulated N870, 321, 492.15 between 2008 and 2019.

“She was said to have opened the account with her passport and the name of Atsu on the 5th of March, 2008, with an initial deposit of N8 million.

“She subsequently made several other huge deposits including N123, 745, 925.57 and N5 million, in the months of March and May, 2008.

“It was also noted by the Commission that the money was far above her legitimate earnings both as a judge and President of the Customary Court of Appeal within the period that the account was operated and would have used to meet the infrastructural needs of the citizens and development of the nation.

“ICPC therefore prayed the court to grant the order in the interest of the nation.”

  • Woman arrested for using hot pressing iron, hot water on maid

The Lagos Police Command said it has arrested a 36-year-old woman for allegedly using hot pressing iron and hot water to inflict injuries on her maid, one Chioma Samuel.

Spokesman of the command, Chike Oti, told newsmen on Sunday in Lagos that the woman sought to hide the crime by dressing-up the maid to cover the wounds .

Oti described the incident as another case of man’s inhumanity to man, adding that the girl was assaulted last Wednesday at 47, Ogundana Street, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said the girl was mentally and physically abused by the suspect by using hot pressing iron to cause grievous injury on the victim’s hands and legs.

According to the police spokesman, the suspect also poured hot water on the maid which scalded her skin.

“On Thursday March 8, the woman’s crime against the girl was exposed when she brought her children to a private school located somewhere in Ikeja alongside the maid.

“Unfortunately for her, the prying eyes of other mothers who came to the same school to drop off their kids, noticed the gaping wounds on the upper and lower limbs of the victim who accompanied the suspect to the school.

“After questioning the girl, they waited for her Madam who had gone to drop her kids in their different classrooms. When she finished and was about to drive off, she was confronted by these women who nearly mobbed her.

“They were calmed by some teachers who heard their piercing voices which rented the air. The women told the suspect to take the girl to a hospital or else they would petition the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State.

“In spite of their warnings to report her to the authorities, the woman stubbornly came to the school on Friday March 9, accompanied by the child victim whose wounds were manifestly untreated.

“On seeing that their warnings were taken for granted, the women made good their promise to call the attention of the Commissioner of Police, who immediately ordered the arrest of the woman,” he said.

Oti said that investigation into the case was in progress, stressing that the woman would be charged to court on Monday.
