PDP’s doors are wide open for returnees, new members – Makarfi

The outgoing National Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Ahemed Markafi has appealed to the incoming leadership of the party to ensure that PDP’s doors remain wide open for both returnees and new members.

Makarfi made the call while welcoming delegates at the PDP National Convention held on Saturday in Abuja.

He said this was imperative to ensure that they were not disadvantaged in any way, “just as it is also imperative that the loyalty, sacrifices, commitment and dedication of those who stuck with the party through thick and thin were not denigrated in any way.

“A level playing field must be availed all members so that we avoid a situation in which we create many other problems while trying to solve one.

“In words and actions, we must continuously assure and reassure members that loyalty to the party does, indeed pay and is rewarded.

“It is not out of place for me to advise the incoming leadership to focus, among others, on evolving ways that would facilitate greater involvement of women and youths in both politics and governance,” he said. .

Makarfi said that inspite of all the challenges encountered by his led Committee, they were able to record some achievements.

Some of the challenges according to him include litigation and inadequate finance as all but one of the bank accounts inherited by the committee was garnished by various court judgements.

“The only bank account we have had access to these past 18 months is one that had less than two million naira.”

He said that inspite of all constraints, the committee was able to lay a good foundation for the re positioning the PDP, turning it into the beautiful bride coveted by all discerning politicians.

He added that the committee was able to achieve substantial reconciliation among PDP members across the country, especially in states with serious leadership problems with several factions.

The states according to him were Adamawa, Anambra, Borno, Kebbi, Kwara, Lagos, Ogun, Osun and Oyo.

He expressed hope that before long, litigations would cease to be the vehicle through which members resolve their issues in the PDP.

He appealed to all members to eschew division and rancor and imbibe the culture of subsuming their individual
interests into the larger interest of the party.

Makarfi said that the party believed that vibrant, but decent and patriotic opposition was required to develop and mature Nigeria democracy.

“We must continue to show by our words and actions that opposition is no madness.”

He advised the ruling party to address the challenges of joblessness and hunger saying “Nigerians are hungry as poverty is ravaging the land.

“Insecurity in the North East which was thought to be receding is creeping back with greater ferocity, particularly against soft targets.

“Kidnap for ransom has taken a life of its own, so is the incessant farmers and herdsmen clashes and criminalities.

“Government must up the ante in its efforts to confront these menaces.”

Also speaking, Sen. Walid Jibril, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BOT) said that the board would work with new leaders of the party that would emerge.

Jibril said that delegates must be given free hand to vote for candidates of their choice.

NAN reports a moment silent was observed in memory and honour of late Vice President, Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme.

  • PDP’s second chance for a new life – Azu Ishiekwene

    By Azu Ishiekwene

The party would have been over by now. Peoples Democratic Party stalwart, Raymond Dokpesi, had, in fact, organised a mock funeral.

When it seemed all but certain that the Ali Modu-Sheriff faction of the PDP was going to have the last laugh at the Supreme Court, Dokpesi registered the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA), as a fallback.

That move was viewed with spite and suspicion, but at the time, I think mercy killing for PDP ought to have been seen as an act of generosity. The party had been hemorrhaging for years, and actually lapsed into the final throes of death after its defeat in the 2015 general election.

Thanks to the Supreme Court ruling in May, however, the PDP has a second chance at another life. But PDP being PDP, the headline at this week’s convention of the party is power sharing. It’s a do-or-die affair not only for the eight main contestants for the post of Chairman and other executive positions, but also for their sponsors inside and outside the party for whom this convention is a continuation of war by other means.

The contest for the soul of the party this weekend is fully charged, especially with the defection, yet again, of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and the interim Chairman Ahmed Makarfi not ruling out interest in the PDP’s presidential ticket.

For a party coming from the brink and with less than two years to the next general election, the haste to get a new executive is understandable. In the winner-takes-all climate of the presidential system, particularly our own presidential system, it’s a miserable thing to be out of power.

Beyond power sharing, however, I’ve been looking in vain for signs that the party has learnt its lessons, without which it might continue to languish.

Contest for power will always be nasty. But PDP is where it is today not because it did not have power but because it got careless with it. If the convention will be a chance for a fresh start, it is yet to show from the posture, tone and actions of the leaders of the party.

Much like in the past when “share the money!” was the refrain from the rank-and-file in my village each time PDP was mentioned, the leaders of the party appear so obsessed with recapturing power in 2019 that the party may just be about to repeat the same mistakes that brought it down in the first place.

The biggest prize at Saturday’s convention, it seems, will go to anyone who promises to bring the PDP back to power in 2019. On Tuesday, Makarfi even begged Atiku to make it happen again. Before that, former President Goodluck Jonathan said he would not sleep until the party is returned to power.

The crisis in the party – to zone or not to zone, to micro-zone or not to micro-zone – is all about who becomes the party’s presidential material for the next election

If the PDP will, for one minute, stop taking its time from the watch of the ruling All Progressives Congress, it might just find that the most important thing now is not who will win the next election for the party but which candidate has the smartest programme to rebuild the party from its present ruins.

This may be a hard thing to swallow for leaders of the party in the South South and South East who currently fund the party and still retain its largest active membership. They want a quick “return” on their “investment.” The same short-term thinking informs the decision to field a candidate from the North to hedge President Muhammadu Buhari.

A party that ruined itself over nearly one decade of reprobate orgies cannot rebuild its fortune two years to the next election cycle. Sure, the party can rise again, but not by glossing over the seriousness of its fall.

PDP may keep lying to itself and its remnants may even join Jonathan to stay awake till the second coming, but anyone with half an eye can see that the 2019 election is APC’s to lose. There’s not a PDP candidate yet that can win an election.

Not Atiku. Not Sule Lamido. Not Ayo Fayose. And not Makarfi.

Yet, the party is so desperate to regain power it can’t wait to put its worst foot forward. Everything about this convention is about who will become the next presidential candidate, and who will be the next puppeteer-in-chief.

Two vital things are lost in the obsession: How the party can rebuild and reconnect with its base, and how it can regain its stature and public confidence to play the role of a credible opposition for now.

The PDP claimed it was Africa’s largest party. That may have been exaggerated, but its extensive local network was hardly in doubt. Unfortunately, it became alienated from its base. It was pocketed first by moneybags, then by governors, and finally by Abuja politicians. The rank-and-file was cut-off and stranded.

Any attempt to rebuild the party must begin at the grassroots, which has sadly been infested by green-eyed youths and assorted scavengers.

Of all the candidates running up and down for positions at Saturday’s convention I haven’t yet seen one with a programme on how to rebuild the broken base of the party.

Not one has so far shown a plan on how to reconnect with millions of the nation’s alienated jobless youths or something to show that it has turned the page from impunity and its notoriety for eating its young alive.

We need to see a plan of action not photos of desperate candidates visiting the shrines of the same godfathers who ruined the party.

We also need a credible, vibrant opposition party. After 16 years as the ruling party and leaving as it did with its tail between its legs, not to mention the internal crisis that nearly drove the party to extinction, PDP may find it somewhat awkward to play the role of opposition.

Yet, its ability to present a leadership that can organise the party into robust, effective opposition is an important test of its readiness to return to power.

This week’s convention offers the chance for housekeeping. It gives the party the opportunity to reflect on its sordid past, to confront it openly and honestly and to find a leadership with the courage to rebuild, one step at a time, and emerge as a party that will outlast the next election cycle.

Yet something about the desperation of the remnants and the returnees tells me that Humpty Dumpty has learnt nothing from its last fall.

    I hope I’m wrong.

  • 2019: Atiku free to move from one political party to another – IBB

…Says PDP will have best convention ever

A former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, has expressed confidence that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led convention organising committee of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, will conduct a rancour free and acceptable convention.

Mr. Babangida spoke on Wednesday when Mr. Okowa, accompanied by the chairman of the caretaker committee of the PDP, Ahmed Makarfi, and top officials of the party met him at his (IBB’s) country home at Minna, Niger State.

I have here, the chairman of the caretaker committee, former chairman of Kaduna State, the Chairman of convention planning committee, the Governor of Delta State with the officials for the convention, I am glad they are working hard and I have seen that they want to make sure that the convention of the PDP is rancour free, transparent and everybody will be given a level playing ground,” he said.

The former Head of State who was in his elements, throwing banters with the PDP leaders and journalists who witnessed the event, emphatically said, “PDP will see one of the best convention like never before.”

He also talked about the return of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar return to the PDP, saying “he is a Nigerian, he is allowed to go to any party and our constitution allows it, so, it is not new and there is nothing wrong for politician to move from one party to another.”

Mr. Makarfi disclosed that the visit was in line with the tradition of the PDP where elders and leaders of the party are consulted for the right decisions to be taken.

In the PDP, we respect leaders, General Babangida has always been with us and it is the tradition of the party to be consulting with our leaders that is why we are here today to brief him (IBB) on the arrangement we have made and take whatever advice he gives for conducting a credible and transparent convention. The success story so far is a confirmation of series of interaction with leaders and founding members of the party,” Mr. Makarfi said.

Mr. Okowa assured the convention will be successful, stating, “A lot has been put on ground for a successful Convention to be held. We thank the Caretaker Committee of our party because they have done a lot ahead of the inauguration on Monday and since then, we have held several meetings.”

As at today, we are confident that we are on course; in terms of trying to provide all that has to be done on Saturday, we are going to have exciting convention, there is no doubt about that, everything concerning the electoral process have been put in place, the accreditation team by today (yesterday, 06/12/17) will get the last list of the statutory delegates from Osun and Anambra States,” he said.

The governor continued, “We obviously will not allow everybody to come into the venue, it is going to be restrictive convention because, it is an elective convention and I think our party will accept that, it is in the interest of the party and in terms of fairness, we are right on course.”

APC is undemocratic, afraid to hold convention – Makarfi

The Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC of being afraid to hold national convention.

He said this was the reason the ruling party had not been able to organise a national convention for many years.

Makarfi spoke in Abuja on Tuesday when he received the chairman of the Steering Committee on the development of strategic plan for National Institute of Legislative Studies, Aminu Shagari, and members on a courtesy visit.

“You have prayed for a successful convention of the PDP. We are not afraid. We are not APC, we are not afraid to hold convention. We are not afraid to hold meetings and convention because we are democratic,” he said.

Makarfi told his guests that he was aware that procedure for legislation was long and cumbersome, adding that the voting pattern could however be improved.

The former governor of Kaduna State said that the process of lawmaking “is not so democratic and the problem facing Nigeria goes beyond ‘nay’ and ‘yea’ because the moment we begin to reduce it to that, very sensitive issues that have telling effects on this country can be so lazily settled, we will face the consequences down the line.”

JUST IN: Atiku arrives PDP headquarters, meets with Makarfi others

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has arrived the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja to formally meet with the party’s leadership.

The former Vice President in company of supporters and praise singers was received by the party’s spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye

Atiku is currently meeting members of the National Caretaker Committe of the party led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

Meanwhile, supporters of Atiku are busy dancing and singing his praises within and outside the party headquarters, also known as Wadata Plaza.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Atiku on Sunday announced his defection to the PDP following his resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, last week.

  • Presidential ticket: I’m not excluded from running, says Makarfi as Atiku officially joins PDP

Presidential ticket: I’m not excluded from running, says Makarfi as Atiku officially joins PDP

Ahmed Makarfi, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caretaker committee, says he could still contest the party’s presidential ticket in spite of the return of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to the party.

Speaking in the current edition of The Interview, Makarfi addressed the question about his own interest.

“I have heard the rumour (that I am running), it has been there since 2007… I have thought of it. By the time I leave as caretaker committee chairman on 9th or 10th, there’ll still be ten months to the party primaries. By any law or the party’s guidelines, I’m not excluded,” he said, in spite of speculation that Atiku is gunning for the party’s presidential ticket.

Ayo Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, has also indicated interest, but Makarfi said Fayose’s declaration of interest in the party’s presidential ticket “is uncalled for and unhealthy” since the party has zoned the ticket to the north.

He also said the PDP was expecting more defections after Atiku’s move from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party.

“For some strategic reasons, don’t expect a lot of people to move to the PDP now. People are in APC for different reasons. Wait for the time when everybody will be on his own, you will see the influx of people into the PDP,” he said.

Makarfi, who reportedly came close to being the PDP’s presidential nominee in 2006, finally revealed how former President Olusegun Obasanjo schemed him out, even though an internal party assessment had returned him as the most favourable candidate.

  • Race for PDP National Chairmanship open to all zones in South – Makarfi

Race for PDP National Chairmanship open to all zones in South – Makarfi

Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ahmed Makarfi, has said the office of the national chairman of the party is not restricted to any particular zone in the Southern part of Nigeria.

Makarfi said this on yesterday in Abuja at a meeting with aspirants who are looking to fill the position.

The party had zoned the office of the national chairman to the southern part of the country, while the presidential slot was ceded to the northern part at a convention in 2015.

The meeting was attended by former Governor of Oyo State, Chief Rashidi Ladoja, Chief Bode George, Prof. Tunde Adeniran, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, Prince Uche Secondus, Chief Raymond Dokpesi and Chief Gbenga Daniel.

Makarfi said his committee cannot alter the the zoning arrangements that had been agreed.

Makarfi said, ”We have no power beyond the convention and I want to remind all of us, the only thing the convention did was to zone two positions and as chairman or caretaker committee, you cannot go beyond that.

“The office of the national chairman is zoned to the South while that of the president is for the North. No micro zoning.”

  • PDP chairmanship: I can’t influence process of election – Makarfi

PDP chairmanship: I can’t influence process of election – Makarfi

The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, caretaker committee, Ahmed Makarfi, has said he doesn’t have the sole power to decide who becomes the party’s chairman.

Makarfi explained that only the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, and convention can make such decision.

Makarfi was responding to claims that he was trying to influence the outcome of the contest for the chairmanship position which will take place at the party’s convention slated for December.

Mr. Makarfi, who said this while addressing journalists at the party’s secretariat in Abuja ahead of a peace parley between the National Caretaker Committee, and aspirants for the top slot, said only the best candidate would emerge from the contest.

It is still up to NEC to decide, in addition to whatever the convention decides.

So far, the decision on who can contest as chairman has been made. If today or tomorrow any other decision of the party is made, we’ll implement that decision,” Mr. Makarfi said.

I want to make one thing categorically clear about unfair insinuations. Some people think that I, as the chairman of the caretaker committee should assume the power that I don’t have.

We have no power beyond the convention and I want to remind all of us, the only thing the party did was to zone positions and as chairman or caretaker committee, you cannot go beyond that”, he added.

Also addressing the aspirants, he said the party leadership was putting measures in place to ensure a peaceful convention and harmony between the regions.

We have been calling on the north and south to put themselves together.

‘‘Whether north or south, we must subject ourselves to what the NEC decides in respect to the matters before us in the leadup to the elective convention.

We said that we should meet with you (aspirants) and discuss with you and hear from you to know your contribution to making proper preparation for the convention.’’

Also, Bode George, a former military governor of Ondo state who spoke with journalists, said with the preparations put in place by the party, only the best candidate can emerge winner at the end.

We had a very useful meeting with the NCC. We agreed that we will remain civil, educate our followers because it is a family contest and not a matter of life and death.

We have agreed and you can see us now holding our hands. There is no quarrel, let the best man win. That is the spirit of the party, that is the spirit we are sending to the public because we want to win the minds and hearts of the public that we are better managers.

If we can manage our party and our states, we will be able to manage this country,’’ Mr. George said.

When asked if the candidates were considering agreeing on a consensus candidate as suggested recently by the Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose, Mr. George said they all agreed ‘‘to work as a team.’’

Whatever it is, whether consensus or not, we are moving together as a team. The party is bigger than any individual. Nobody will be aggrieved,” he said.

Aspirants for the position present at the meeting include DAAR Communication boss, Raymond Dokpesi; former Ogun state governor, Gbenga Daniel; former education minister, Tunde Adeniran; former Lagos state governorship aspirant, Jimi Agbaje; former Oyo state governor, Rasheed Ladoja, and erstwhile acting chairman, PDP, Uche Secondus.
