Atiku’s exit will not make any dent, you have freedom to leave PDP – Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde says that the exit of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will not have any setback for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Atiku on Wednesday resigned his membership of PDP in Adamawa.

Makinde, who was the keynote Speaker at a Colloquium of the 10th Coronation Anniversary of Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, Deji of Akure, stated this in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Akure.

“ I don’t think that will make any dent on PDP as a party. PDP is an institution and you have freedom of entrance and exit,” he said.

The governor said that he did not see the African Democratic Congress (ADC)  as a threat to PDP but as a mere political party intended to contest in elections as PDP.

Earlier, Makinde described traditional institution as a heritage of the country, asking for government to give it due reverence for nation development.

The title of the lecture was: “The Role of Nigeria’s Traditional Institutions in Nation Building: Impediments, Impacts, and Prospects.”

He  said that traditional institutions are not relics of the past but enduring pillars of identity, legitimacy, and communal cohesion.

“Long before Nigeria’s formal administrative systems took root, traditional rulers dispensed justice, upheld values, coordinated local security, and kept communities united.

“Today, they remain custodians of grassroots trust. And nation-building that ignores them does so at its peril.

“No wonder politicians continue to seek their blessings and validation,” he said.

According to him,  strengthening traditional institutions is not simply about cultural preservation but it is strategic governance.

He stated that his government had made deliberate steps to integrate traditional institution into the governance architecture, which resulted into great success in Oyo State.

The governor stated that the  nation-building was not about how much oil the country  produced but about the  strength of  institutions, their ability to serve the people justly, and the legacy they leave behind.

Appreciating the governor, Oba Aladelusi said that traditional institution had pivotal role to play in nation building hence the need for the country’s constitution to strengthen it.

The traditional ruler, who said that Akure is one without any division, commended the state government,  sons and daughters of the town for their support to the Deji palace.

Those behind Ibadan Stampede must face wrath of the law- Makinde vows

Governor Seyi Makinde has again restated the commitment of his government to ensure the prosecution of all the suspects involved in the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed the lives of at least 35 children.

The stampede occurred during a children funfair organized by Ooni of Ife’s former wife, Naomi Ogunseyi. Olori Naomi, media personality Hamzat Oriyomi. Naomi, Hamzat and the principal of the school have been remanded in prison custody.

On Monday January 6, at the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for state workers, Governor Makinde addressed calls for leniency, stating that the rule of law will be upheld in Oyo State. He revealed that some individuals have argued that similar incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) did not lead to prosecutions, questioning why Oyo State should proceed differently.

“In the outgone year, we faced challenges. 2024 started for us here in Oyo State almost on a tragic note. On 16th January 2024, we had an explosion here in Bodija. It affected even my office. The impact was felt all around Ibadan. We’re closing it out.

And then, towards the end of the year, we had the stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun. 35 innocent souls were lost; may we not see such again in Oyo State.

Quite a number of people have been reaching out to me, saying, ‘Oh, this incident happened in Anambra State. It also occurred in the FCT. Nobody went to jail. Why is it that in Oyo State, some people are going to jail?’ I said, ‘Well, Oyo State is not Anambra State, and no matter how highly placed, justice must be done.’

The judiciary is here. It’s in their court. If you think you can grant bail pending trial, I have nothing against it. But for the trial, the people must go on trial.

So, people come to me, and I’ve been saying to them, ‘Oyo State, even if this entire country decides not to follow the rule of law, in Oyo State, we will follow; we will dare to be different.”

  • Ahead 2027, political realignment as PDP heavyweights support Makinde, dump Atiku

Ahead 2027, political realignment as PDP heavyweights support Makinde, dump Atiku

Indications in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) suggest that party heavyweights are rallying behind Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, as their preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential elections.

This shift in support marks a significant turn away from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who has long been a dominant figure in the party and a serial contender for the presidency. The growing endorsement for Makinde comes at a critical time for the PDP, as it attempts to reposition itself and unify its ranks after a period of internal strife.

Wike, who has been a key power broker within the PDP, is believed to be playing a significant role in shaping the party’s direction, and his backing of Makinde signals a broader strategy to shift away from Atiku’s influence. Makinde, who is seen as a rising star within the party, has garnered praise for his governance in Oyo State, as well as his ability to build alliances and appeal to a broader base of voters, making him an appealing candidate for the party’s future leadership.

This emerging preference for Makinde is being viewed by some as a tactical move to sideline Atiku, who, despite his extensive political experience and stature, has faced increasing criticism within party circles. Many party members have expressed frustration with Atiku’s repeated bids for the presidency, with some labeling him a “serial contestant” who has failed to deliver electoral victories for the PDP in past elections. These critics argue that the party needs a fresh face with new ideas to rejuvenate its appeal to voters, particularly after losing ground in the 2023 elections.

Moreover, the shift in support towards Makinde also reflects a broader generational shift within the PDP, as younger and more dynamic leaders like him emerge as the future of the party. His relatively progressive policies, successful governance in Oyo State, and ability to unite different factions have positioned him as a strong contender for the PDP’s presidential ticket in 2027.

As the PDP gears up for the next election cycle, the internal dynamics of the party will likely continue to evolve. While Atiku remains a formidable figure with a loyal base of supporters, the growing consensus around Makinde’s candidacy signals a desire within the party for renewal and change. This battle for the party’s nomination is expected to intensify in the coming years, as both camps work to consolidate their influence and secure the support of key stakeholders within the PDP.
