[Video] Fayose bows to Makinde, accepts him as leader of South-West PDP

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has now publicly accepted Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo as the South West zonal leader.

He made the surprise concession at the zonal congress taking place at WOCDIF Event Centre, Osogbo, capital of Osun on Monday.

“Makinde is the leader and father of the party in Southwest”, he told the delegates.

Leadership tussle between Makinde and Fayose had heated up the zone, with the PDP NWC having to shift the congress from Ibadan to Osogbo.

But Fayose saw in Osogbo today that he no longer enjoys the support of many PDP members, as many of the delegates appeared in an Ankara uniform, to show solidarity with Makinde.

By bowing to Makinde’s leadership, the former governor may have thrown under the bus the people he was backing for the congress election.

What it means for Makinde, is that the zonal leadership team that he favours, will now have an easy ride into office.

Makinde supports Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja as zonal chairman, while Fayose was rooting for Eddy Olafeso.

“Governor Seyi Makinde is our leader. Our supporters and lovers should not continue to put hedge in between us. Either way this election goes, I will accept.

“Even though Arapaja has abused me so much, I will be the first person to visit him in Ibadan.

“Nobody has offended me and if I have offended anybody, I sincerely apologise. Seyi Makinde remains our father come what may”, he added.

Makinde, also addressing the delegates said: “This is a family affair. It is an attempt to reposition our party in the Southwest. It has ramifications for our party nationally.

“Whatever the outcome is, we will take it in the spirit of a family contest. We don’t want to defeat ourselves; we want to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“At the end of this exercise, there will be no victor, no vanquished. As the only Governor of the party in the zone, whoever emerges, I will work with them to reposition the party. I thank you for the peaceful conduct.”

He said, “No governor has ever handed over to his successor in this state, Baba Lam Adeshina didn’t hand over to his successor, former governor Ladoja, Ladoja didn’t hand over to former governor Adebayo Alao Akala, Akala didn’t hand over to Abiola Ajimobi, and Ajimobi also didn’t hand over to me, but am standing in front of the altar of God, I will be the first governor to hand over to my successor.”

Makinde however commended the smooth process that led to the inauguration of the new CAC President, saying that though Nigeria is at the cross road, but priority of all Nigerians should be how to end crisis of division in the nation.

We’ll put in place policies to boost economic growth – Makinde

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says his administration will continue to put in place policies that will boost the economic growth of the state.

Makinde stated this at an interactive session with leaders of market and artisans’ associations across the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was held at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan on Thursday..

The governor emphasised that his government would ‘do the needful’ to boost the businesses of the traders to make life comfortable for everyone.

On the leadership crisis rocking the traders’ association, Makinde posited that he would set up a committee to explore all means of securing an amicable resolution of the crisis.

Earlier, Mrs Odunayo Danjuma, Southwest Coordinator, National Association of Nigerian Traders and the Acting Iyaloja of Oyo State, Mrs Justina Ogundoyin, appreciated the governor for providing loans to traders and artisans in the state.

The duo promised that the traders would continue to contribute their quota to the economic development of the state.

Danjuma, however, appealed to the governor to intervene and resolve the lingering leadership crisis among market women and men in the state with the view to having an acceptable leadership.

  • Oyo APC envious of Makinde’s great attainments-Aide

Oyo APC envious of Makinde’s great attainments-Aide

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State , Taiwo Adisa, has averred that the All Progressives Congress in the state is envious of the governors’ great attainments.

Adisa said the APC was aware that they could not raise any contender that can match Makinde and that is the reason they what to lure him to their party by all means.

The CPS, who said this in a statement on Monday said that the plan to lure Makinde to the APC did not come as a surprise, saying the party was fascinated by Makinde’s achievements despite the challenges present.

The statement read in part, “One is not surprised that some elements in the APC are busy debating the possibility of Governor Makinde’s defection to the party.

“The unprecedented achievements the governor has recorded in a very short time, especially despite the COVID-19 pandemic, has thoroughly beaten their imagination such that they have concluded it is impossible to raise a candidate to contest against him in 2023.

“As a close watcher of the GSM magic, so to say, one cannot be surprised that the APC in Oyo State is really envious of the great attainments of Governor Makinde.

“However, rather than claim that Makinde wants to defect to the APC, the truth the APC elements should tell the world is that their party is attempting to lure the performing governor in order to avert a woeful performance against him in 2023.

“Contrary to the claims of the APC members that the governor has been soft against criticisms by its members, Governor Makinde has not bothered to respond to their baseless criticisms in recent times but has chosen to remain focused on service delivery.

“We also completely reject the claims that his desire to join the APC informed the “soft approach” to the farmers/herders’ crisis.

“Rather, the governor has remained on the side of the law and has always insisted that criminals, whichever tribe they belong, are our enemies and they must be fished out without undue ethnic profiling.

“So, the best thing the APC could come up with right now is to imagine a Makinde as a standard-bearer so he could serve as a surreptitious redemption for the years of locust the party had inflicted on the people of Oyo State.”

  • Alleged planned defection: Makinde cannot be trusted, no soft landing for him in APC – Coalition

Alleged planned defection: Makinde cannot be trusted, no soft landing for him in APC – Coalition

A coalition of political groups in Oyo State has vowed to resist attempts by Governor Seyi Makinde to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is contained in a communique issued after their joint stakeholders meeting and made available to newsmen on Monday in Ibadan.

Among the political groups in attendance were the Oyo Solidarity Front (OSF), Oyo Progressives Resolute (OPR) and Oyo Sustainable Development Movement (OSDM).

The communique was signed by Messrs Johnson Olooto, Shina Alubankudi, Waheed Olanrewaju, Sunday Olododo, Ibrahim Arikewusola and Daud Arapaja, the chairmen and secretaries of the groups respectively.

According to speculations making the rounds in Oyo, the governor is planning to join the APC in the state due to the collapse of the structure that brought him to power in 2019.

The coalition said that the governor’s attempts will be resisted by all stakeholders in Oyo APC, adding that the masses in the state will be mobilized to stop this “anathema” to progressive tendencies.

“He has been rejected by his party and its leadership in the South West and he is looking for a soft landing, he should move further than the APC. He has always claimed to be popular.

“He should stake his popularity in any of the other political parties in the country, not in APC where he has elevated his attack on party leadership to a state policy,” they said.

They noted in a communique that the governor could not be trusted because he betrayed all those who worked for him to emerge as governor.

“Was it not the same Governor Makinde that said there was Corona Virus in APC at one of his party’s rallies?

“Was he not the same Governor Makinde who harassed members of the progressives in the State and has continued to do so?

“So why does Governor Makinde think it is the same party that should offer him a soft landing.”

The coalition said that anyone that cannot be trusted would find it difficult to get a berth in APC.

“All the people that helped him to power are no longer with him. Former Gov. Ayodele Fayose was the person that handed over the PDP flag to him as party flag bearer, today he is at logger heads with his benefactor.

“His antics have left his party more divided and many have deserted him. He would be an albatross on the neck of APC in Oyo State and we will resist his attempt at joining our party,” they said.

TheNewsGuru, com, TNG reports that Governor Seyi Makinde was elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 after his initial failed attempts with other parties.

Insecurity: Makinde invites Oyo CP over arrest of Wakili, OPC members

Governor Seyi Makinde has invited the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko on the recent twist in the security situation in Kajola, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of the State.

The Governor who said he is aware of the goings-on in the region assures that his administration is doing everything within its powers to ensure there is no miscarriage of justice.

He vowed that anyone found wanting of breaking the law, irrespective of the ethnic background or religion will be dealt with in accordance with the law of the land.

Makinde spoke on Monday while performing a symbolic presentation of school notebooks to secondary school students across the state.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) on Sunday apprehended a suspected kidnap kingpin, Iskilu Wakili in Ayete, Ibarapa area of the state.

However, soon after the arrest, the police also arrested the OPC members for carrying out the arrest on the dreaded Wakili, accusing them (OPC members) of arson and murder.

Makinde said “I am aware of what is going on in Kajola in Ibarapa North local government area of Oyo state. I will like to use this opportunity to tell our people that, the government is doing everything within its power to ensure that there is no miscarriage of justice.

“Anyone that is found wanting or that has broken the law, irrespective of their ethnic background or their religion will be dealt with in accordance with the law of the land.

“So, people shouldn’t go into overdrive.

“I have asked the Commissioner of Police to see me today and I have been given the assurance that they will do a thorough investigation into the security situations in the area.

“And I appeal to our people to please let us be calm. Please let us refrain from ethnic profiling, let us have trust in the ability and the capability of the people saddled with the responsibility of maintaining law and order within our state.

“It is the government that you put in place and the government will continue to work in the interest of the people of Oyo state.”

  • Oyo won’t provide land for ranching – Makinde

Oyo won’t provide land for ranching – Makinde

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has said the state will not provide land for ranching as it believes it is a private business.

Makinde said this to clarify a tweet in which he revealed that Oyo State will adopt the National Livestock Transformation Plan which is already being implemented in Kwara State.

The Governor, after a meeting with his Kwara State counterpart, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, had said on Twitter, “We also agreed that the National Livestock Transformation Plan which is already being implemented in Kwara State would be implemented in Oyo State leading to further collaborations between both states on economy and security.”

His tweet was taken by many to mean an implementation of Rural Grazing Area settlements which many Nigerians had in the past kicked against.

One Twitter user, @olufunkeajibul1, said, “I hope the National Livestock Transformation Plan is not the same RUGA. If yes, Mr Governor please tread with caution. But no, please fire on all salvos.”

@Itee_esq said, “Your Excellency Sir, hope you are not bringing RUGA to Oyo State through the back door.”

@Carol-Ukoha said, “They changed RUGA to National Livestock Transformation Plan, can’t you read between the lines? I hope you have a rethink. You cannot afford to fail your people. This decision is unintelligent please.”

The attention of the Governor was drawn to the reactions to his tweet, resulting in a clarification on his decision to implement the National Livestock Transformation Plan.

According to him, the state will not implement the whole of the National Livestock Transformation Plan, only the aspects it finds beneficial.

Makinde said, “My attention has been drawn to this tweet regarding the implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan during the joint security meeting, yesterday. For the avoidance of doubt, when I said we would implement the plan, I didn’t mean a wholesale implementation.

“We will be taking aspects which are beneficial for our state. As I have stated on several occasions, our position in Oyo State is that ranching is a private business and should be carried out as such. Our admin won’t be providing land for free to private investors for ranching.”

Some governors from the North on Monday visited Governor Seyi Makinde, their Oyo counterpart, over the recent ethnic clash at Shasha area of Ibadan, the state capital.

The governors, who visited Makinde, are Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Abubakar Bello (Niger) and Bello Matawalle (Zamfara).

The governors arrived at Ibadan around 7:03 pm and went into a closed-door meeting.

There has been tension in the state following the clash between Hausa and Yoruba traders at Shasa market.

Daily Trust reports that about 20 people were buried on Sunday in the aftermath of the crisis.

Also, about 5,000 Hausa traders, women and children displaced by the violence are still taking refuge at the residence of the Sarkin Shasa, Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin, and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), in Ibadan.

  • Yoruba/Fulani herder crisis: Fayose backs Igboho, urges Makinde to be more proactive

Yoruba/Fulani herder crisis: Fayose backs Igboho, urges Makinde to be more proactive

Ayodele Fayose, former Governor of Ekiti state, has warned against arresting popular Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, well known as Sunday Igboho.

Igboho had issued a seven-day quit notice to herdsmen accused of kidnapping, rape, farmland destruction, amongst other crimes in the Ibarapa area of Oyo, and enforced same.

He had also confronted herdsmen accused of terrorizing farmers and residents in the Yewa area of Ogun State.

But Igboho has been quiet lately after series of warnings and threats. He has also stopped granting interviews.

However, Fayose noted that Igboho is not ignorable with the current level of insecurity in Nigeria.

The PDP Chieftain told Channels TV on Sunday that the activist must be used positively in the resolution of ethnic crisis and insecurity rather than being threatened.

Fayose said: Sunday Igboho is not ignorable in the circumstance that we have found ourselves. He can now be used positively to make peace rather than condemn him or ask him to go, arrest him or put him behind bars.

“The situation we have at hand now calls for everyone to come to a round table and appeal to their people.

“Sunday Igboho might not be the best of persons but the fact remains that when crises come, they come from the lower cadre of the society and people like him are the ones that can talk to the people. Big men stay in their houses and will send people out to go and resolve it.

“My appeal is that Sunday Igakindeboho, no matter how stupid or how you perceived him, must be brought and used positively in the resolution of this crisis.

Speaking further on the ethnic crisis in Oyo, Fayose called on Governor Seyi Makinde to be more proactive.

He said: “Governor Makinde needs to be more proactive, Oyo state is a big state. Look at what happened in Igangan, when a similar incident happened in Ekiti, I was there that same day. I took charge of that community. I slept in that community. And immediately they mentioned names of people responsible, instead of fighting them, I brought them to the round table, and this I have told Governor Makinde. I sat him down.”

Fayose also spoke about the report linking former Aviation minister Fani-Kayode to the All Progressives Congress.

Fayose quoted James 1:14, about when a man is ‘taken away in his own covetousness’ and said: “Anyone who leaves PDP for APC at this time is taken up in his own covetousness…I know FFK is going nowhere, I’m 100% sure. It’s normal for you to sell your market to anyone interested.

When asked if he could join APC, Fayose said: “I’m over 60, what else am I looking for. I became governor at 42. All the opportunities I wanted, PDP offered me. Some people could choose to be dishonorable, not me.”

JUST IN: Makinde shuts popular Ibadan market after ethnic clash claims one

The Oyo State Government on Saturday ordered the immediate closure of Shasha market in Akinyele Local Government Area of Ibadan, the state capital.

The market was closed after an ethnic clash was recorded on Friday.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that one person was confirmed dead on Friday as a result of a misunderstanding between a cobbler and an cart pusher in market.

It was gathered that the clash erupted on Thursday but reached its peak on Friday when the cobbler was confirmed dead as a result of injury sustained during the clash.

An eyewitness told NAN that the cart pusher, from the northern part of the country, stabbed the cobbler, a Yoruba, with a knife as a result of a misunderstanding between the two.

The witness said that the cobbler was rushed to the hospital for treatment and later confirmed dead on Friday morning.

He said that the situation sparked trouble as traders and some other residents of the area stormed the Shasa market on Friday, to retaliate the death of their colleague.

When NAN visited the area, it was discovered that some shops and houses were burnt while the market was deserted.

Security operatives, including the Police, the state Joint Anti-Crime security patrol team Codenamed Operation Burst and Amotekun operatives, were seen at different locations to ensure that normalcy returns in the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Olugbenga Fadeyi, confirmed the incident.

Fadeyi said that the violence erupted as a result of minor misunderstanding between two persons which later resulted in the death of one of them.

“The Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadako, and Gov. Seyi Makinde’s aide have been to the place to talk to the aggrieved parties.

However, a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, saidthe government order was to forestall breakdown of law and order in the area.

The government also imposed a curfew on Shasha and the market area.

The curfew is to run from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The government warned residents of the affected area to go about their legitimate businesses peacefully, stating that anyone caught perpetrating violence will face the wrath of the law.

“His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde has directed the immediate closure of Shasha market indefinitely following reports of a breach of peace in the area,” the government’s statement said.

“The governor has also approved the imposition of curfew on Shasha. It will run from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.

“Residents of the affected area are enjoined to go about their legitimate businesses within the hours stipulated by the law.

“Anyone caught disrupting the peace of the community will be made to face the wrath of the law.”
