Speaker Abbas hails gallant Armed Forces, salutes fallen heroes

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has hailed the Nigerian Armed Forces for their gallantry and patriotism, saying they remain one of the best in the world.

Speaker Abbas said this in his message to commemorate this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, which is marked every January 15, to mourn and celebrate Nigeria’s fallen heroes.

The Speaker stated that Nigeria would not have been able to experience prosperity if the country was not safe and secure for businesses and other economic activities to thrive.

This, he said, underscores the critical role of the Armed Forces in the general wellbeing of the nation.

Speaker Abbas noted that while parts of the country still experience security threats, the Armed Forces have risen to the occasion most times.

He, however, urged the military, security and intelligence agencies to do more in securing lives and property, which he noted is the primary responsibility of the government.

The Speaker equally mourned security agents who have died in the line of duty, describing their deaths as heroic sacrifice. He said the supreme prices they paid in their efforts to make the country liveable would not be forgotten.

Speaker Abbas said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has significantly boosted the morale of service men by rejigging the security architecture, compensating the families of fallen heroes, as well as clearing backlogs of unpaid salaries and allowances to serving and retired service men.

Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Speaker, House of Representatives, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

  • 2027 Presidency: Governor Makinde distances self from the G-5 Port Harcourt declaration

2027 Presidency: Governor Makinde distances self from the G-5 Port Harcourt declaration

    …Says It’s Premature, Inappropriate.

The Governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde has distanced himself from the purported declaration by the former Governor of Benue State, Dr Samuel Ortom, that the G-5 Governors have thrown their weight behind the 2027 Presidential aspiration of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

In a report published in page 4 of the Nigerian Tribune of January 13, 2024, former Governor Samuel Ortom in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was quoted to have said that the G-5 Governors had declared support for the 2027 Presidential aspiration of President Tinubu.

Engr Makinde was also said to have stated that, discussions about the 2027 Presidential Election when the President is less than seven months in office is premature and inappropriate, saying further that his major priority is to provide good and quality governance for citizens and residents of the state, and not the 2027 Presidency.

According to a source at the Government House in Agodi, Ibadan Oyo State, it was reported that the Governor was shocked and embarrassed to learn of the purported declaration in the media, without any form of consultation or discussion.

The source who spoke on condition of anonymity stated that, one of the members of the G-5 Governors who was conspicuously missing in the said Port Harcourt meeting according to the Tribune report was Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

She further explained that the former Benue Governor was not speaking the minds of the G-5 members, but rather making his own personal remarks and not on behalf of the G-5.

She concluded that members of the public should disregard the declaration, saying that such an action would have been appropriate, if it was a collective decision of the entire members concerned and could not possibly be taken by an individual.

  • N3.4b judgment debt: Accountant-General didn’t contradict Makinde – Oyo govt.

N3.4b judgment debt: Accountant-General didn’t contradict Makinde – Oyo govt.

Oyo State Government has said that the Accountant-General of the state, Mrs Kikelomo Adegoke, did not contradict the position of Gov. Seyi Makinde on the payment of judgment debt to the sacked local government chairmen and councilors.

The clarification is contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor, Mr Sulaimon Olanrewaju in Ibadan on Monday.

Olanrewaju noted that there were reports in a section of the media twisting the contents of a letter sent to some banks by the accountant-general, claiming that she contradicted the governor’s stance that the state had no money to defray the judgment debt.

He said the letter sent to the banks in respect of the garnishee order placed on the state’s account in 10 commercial banks by a Federal High Court in Abuja in December 2023 was consistent with Makinde’s position.

“In the letter, the accountant-general informed the affected banks that the Oyo State Joint Local Government Allocation Account domiciled with First Bank of Nigeria, had already been put on lien to the tune of N3,425,300,000, being the total amount of the judgment debt.

“Having adequately provisioned for the debt, it is, therefore, both unconscionable and inequitable for nine other banks to do the same in the circumstances. This is, in fact, consistent with Gov. Makinde’s position,” he said.

Olanrewaju further stated that it was unfortunate that some misguided individuals, bent on creating an imaginary division within the state government had coloured the contents of the letter to make it appear as if the governor lied.

He also refuted the report that said the state would not pay the debt owned the former local government chairmen sacked by the Makinde-led administration.

Olanrewaju said what the governor said regarding the judgment debt was that the process of the law would be followed to a logical conclusion to avoid paying the state’s money to wrong people.

“For the avoidance of doubts, Gov. Makinde has not said that the state will not pay the judgment debt nor did he say the state does not have the funds to pay.

“Rather, the position of the governor is that the whole process of the law must be pursued to a logical conclusion before the money is paid to avoid the state’s fund getting into the wrong hands,” he said.

Alaafin: Court adjourns kingmakers’ fresh suit against Gov. Makinde

An Oyo High Court sitting in Awe has adjourned for hearing a fresh suit filed by Oyo kingmakers (Oyomesi) against Gov. Seyi Makinde and two others on the vacant stool of Alaafin of Oyo till Dec. 14.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters were joined in the suit as co- defendants.

The claimants in the suit No. HOY/41/2023 are: High Chief Yusuf Ayoola, (Basorun of Oyo), High Chief Wakeel Oyedepo, (Lagunna), High Chief Amuda Yusuf (Akinniku), High Chief Waheed Oyetunji (Aare Ago Basorun) and Chief Gbadebo Mufutau (Baale Alapo).

The kingmakers, in the suit filed on their behalf by their Lead Counsel, Mr Kazeem Sobaloju, after the withdrawal and subsequent striking out of a similar case by the court, had approached the court on Thursday with a fresh suit.

Sobaloju reminded the court that he had two pending applications filed on Nov. 1 on the subject matter before the court.

He said that the counter affidavit to the notice of preliminary objection and the interim injunction were served on him barely 45 minutes ago.

Sobaloju prayed the court for maintenance of the status quo in spite of the notice of the preliminary objection filed by the defence counsel.

He equally said that he had filed a counter affidavit to the notice of the preliminary objection.

However, the defence counsel, Mr L.A. Abiola, who doubles as the Director, Department of Civil Litigation and Advisory Council in the state Ministry of Justice, assured the court of his preparedness to move the application for his notice of preminary objection.

He said that they were not, in any way, running away from the legal battle.

According to reports all the claimants were present in court.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Ladiran Akintola, said following the agreement between both counsel, the matter was adjourned till Dec. 14 for hearing of the preliminary objection filed by the defence counsel.

Oyo approves Olaoye’s selection as new Soun of Ogbomoso

The governor of Oyo state, Mr Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointment of Prince Afolabi Olaoye as the new Soun of Ogbomoso land.

News of the approval came in a statement issued Saturday evening in Ibadan by the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Olusegun Olayiwola.

Olayiwola said the announcement followed the “long-drawn processes specified under the law”.

The commissioner stated that Gov. Makinde has since congratulated the new traditional ruler of Ogbomoso land on his ascension to the throne.

“The exalted position has placed Olaoye in the position to facilitate harmony, understanding and tolerance among his subjects.

“All sons and daughters of the ancient city of Ogbomoso are implored to work with the new king to consolidate on the successes of his forefathers,” he said.

  • Resident doctors seek Makinde’s intervention on state of LAUTECH’s teaching hospital

Resident doctors seek Makinde’s intervention on state of LAUTECH’s teaching hospital

Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso says Gov. Seyi Makinde’s urgent intervention is needed to halt the hospital’s declining state.

The Association, through its President, Dr Sope Orugun, and General Secretary, Dr Nnara Stanley, said Gov. Makinde urgently needs to address the challenges bedeviling LAUTECH Teaching Hospital (LTH).

The association had on many occasions earlier sought the intervention of successive governments in the state over the hospital’s declining condition.

The hospital has the capacity to train health workers of different cadres to meet the demands of the citizens of the state and beyond if properly administered.

The ARD LTH, in a statement by Orugun and Stanley, listed some of the hospital’s challenges as shortage of manpower, poor remuneration, brain drain, poor infrastructure and poor financial investment.
“This hospital’s founding fathers had committed huge funds to infrastructural development towards achieving their vision.

“But, sadly, successive governments have abandoned the investment with little or no financial commitment to the improvement of the hospital’s fortune,” it said.

The ARD said many categories of health workers had been lost to poor remuneration and excessive workload caused by the shortage of hands and the “JAPA” syndrome plaguing the nation.

It pointed out that all federal and state government-owned tertiary hospitals in South Western Nigeria have started the payment of Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF).

The doctors however said the only exception in their geo-political zone were those owned by Oyo and Ondo State Governments.

“The MRTF is meant to cater for update, revision courses and examination expenditures, and stands out as a major ‘push factor’ for resident doctors from the centre.

“Most recently, Benue, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara and Nasarawa states have either given approval for payment or effected the same. Sadly, most of these states started negotiations regarding the MRTF long after Oyo state.

“MRTF is similar to the fund paid to other workers to cater for their on-the-job training.

“Oyo state which ought to set the pace has however lagged far behind in the adoption and domiciliation of the MRTF in spite of all efforts from ARD LTH Ogbomoso since 2021,” they said.

The association stated that it would shock many to know that Oyo State Government still pays its health workers less than 5,000 Naira monthly as hazard allowance.

It added that the amount was ridiculous in view of the current economic hardship in the country and the geometric rise in inflation rate and prices of commodities.

“In addition to this, the CONMESS being paid now in the state was last reviewed in 2009, which contravened the agreement of a review every five years.

“This salary structure is already due for a second review. The state government needs to understand the seriousness with which the ‘push-factors’ for brain drain need to be addressed if the tide must be turned.”

The association recalled that Gov. Makinde had in August 2020 promised to pay the fund currently  enjoyed by resident doctors in federal tertiary health institutions.

“Owing to this failed promise, our members have frequently resorted to borrowing money in order to go for these updates and examinations, while not leaving their other responsibilities to families and the society unattended to,” it said.

The ARD noted that it had in 2020 presented Gov. Makinde with a plaque of honour owing to his prompt intervention in the rot he met in the hospital when he assumed office.

“Now, we still have a similar trust in his capability to address the matters raised with the seriousness and promptness they deserve.”

The ARD LTH went on to declare its support for the demand by Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on the replacement of resident doctors who exit or complete their training.

NARD has advocated that such doctors should be replaced on a one-for-one basis to mitigate the effect of such departure.

“We support the demand of NARD, and we call for the implementation of the demand at LTH and nationwide,” the association stated.

According to reports, LTH which occupies a strategic position in the healthcare space of Oyo state, has the capacity to train well over 170 resident doctors.

This is by virtue of the number of specialists running residency training.

But, like a deprived giant, it currently has 69 resident doctors.

Most departments have now lost their accreditations due to unavailability of adequate personnel and equipment, among other pressing issues, making the hospital less attractive for training.

  • Presidential Election Tribunal: Makinde, Wike constantly monitoring judges – Atiku’s aide

Presidential Election Tribunal: Makinde, Wike constantly monitoring judges – Atiku’s aide

Phrank Shaibu, the Special Assistant on Public Communication to the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has accused the former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, of constantly monitoring judges as the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal winds down.

According to Shaibu, Wike and Makinde travelled to Plateau State to attend a memorial service hosted by the President of the Appeal Court, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, even though they were reportedly not invited.

He said the event ordinarily was supposed to be a solemn service, “but our busybody interlopers polluted the event with their shameful appearance.”

Shaibu made this comment via a statement he signed and released on Monday, where he claimed that Wike had been using dubious means to cosy up to judges and had been giving them gifts under the guise of welfare.

He argued that Wike’s latest visit to an event hosted by the Appeal Court President could be another ruse to influence the appellate court where the current tribunal judges are from.

Continuing, he said  that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, made a Freudian slip a few months ago when he claimed he was happy that Governor Makinde was a member of the renegade governors known as the G5.

He said: “Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State as the host governor, was invited for the programme, but Wike and Makinde were gatecrashers at that event. The reason is not far-fetched. They have continued to cosy up to judges just to impress their paymaster.

“Unfortunately, the CJN, Justice Ariwoola, has also failed to live above suspicion. He was in Rivers State ahead of the election, where he said he was happy that Governor Makinde was a member of G5. Then, at the commissioning of the Oyo Governor’s lodge in Abuja on May 25, the CJN once again was the special guest of Governor Makinde.

“Today, there are rumours that the next attorney-general will be a kinsman of the CJN as part of efforts to manipulate the outcome of the election petition tribunal. While this has not been proven, the fact remains that the CJN has put himself in a position where his integrity is constantly questioned.”

Afenifere: How we reconciled Adebanjo, Fasoranti – Makinde

Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde has disclosed that he and other prominent leaders in Yoruba land have decided to reconcile the two elders in Afenifere Ayo Adebanjo and Reuben Fasoranti.

Makinde made this disclosure during a meeting of Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba sociocultural group.

The reconciliation meeting was held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday.

It was  gathered that Adebanjo and Fasoranti had been at loggerheads over the leadership of the group.

The two leaders have been trading words over who is the authentic leader of the group for the past few years.

Makinde has, however, revealed that he and other prominent personalities in Yoruba land have decided to end the crisis between the two leaders.

Makinde, while speaking, declared that he and some frontline leaders in Afenifere had decided to resolve the differences between the two leaders of the group.

He stated that it is now time to begin the process of fostering unity in Yoruba land.

Makinde said, “We are all aware of the issues between our two Afenifere leaders; Pa Ayo Adebanjo and Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

“Basically, partisan and election issues have come and gone and we are now talking about the unity of the Yoruba race. So, these frontline leaders thought it fit to come together to start the process of seeking for unity in Yorubaland.

“And we know that once our two Babas come together, we will also have the deserved unity in Nigeria. If you put it in proper perspective, whenever Yorubaland is united, Nigeria is united, and whenever we have issues and challenges in Yorubaland, it usually spirals into other parts of Nigeria”.

  • Senate President: Some governors have resolved to support Tinubu’s choice – Makinde

Senate President: Some governors have resolved to support Tinubu’s choice – Makinde

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says some of his colleagues have resolved to support the choice of President Bola Tinubu for Senate President for the 10th National Assembly, scheduled for Tuesday.

Makinde stated this on Monday in Ibadan during the post-second term inauguration interdenominational thanksgiving service, organised in his honour by the state chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

The thanksgiving service, organised in conjunction with Fathers of Faith in Oyo State, was held at Oritamefa Baptist Church, Ibadan.

The governor said that the governors came together and resolved to support Tinubu’s choice ‘who is a Christian from the South-South region of Nigeria’.

“We are not playing religious politics but what is fair is fair.

“We stood for Southern presidency; we stood for justice, fairness and we are going to stand for equity as well,” he said.

Makinde promised to be at the National Assembly with his colleagues on Tuesday to ensure that fairness, justice and equity prevailed in the election of the senate president.

He expressed appreciation to CAN for its support and for organising the thanksgiving service.

The governor also commended the people of the state for finding him worthy of serving them for another four years and pledged not to disappoint them.

He said that his second tenure would give him the opportunity to consolidate on most of the works started during his first tenure, stressing that his administration would put the state on the path to sustainable development.

Makinde assured the congregation that he would do his best and carry the people of the state along in governance of the state.
