At least two security personnel lost their lives during Friday night’s jailbreak at the Abolongo Correctional Centre in Oyo State.

Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed this in a state broadcast he delivered on Saturday evening.

No fewer than 837 inmates were said to have escaped after heavily-armed men attacked the correctional center with explosives.

2023: Don’t die for us politicians, Makinde cautions Nigerians at Fayose’s son’s wedding

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has apparently announced an end to the political difference between him and the former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Makinde and Fayose had a few months ago locked-horns over the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West region.

Although the former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose conceded defeat after his preferred candidate, Eddy Olafeso lost to Taofeek Arapaja who was backed by Governor Makinde in the April 2021 south-west zonal PDP Congress, there were indications that the party in the zone may not be united.

But one week to the Special National Convention of the PDP, Governor Makinde, who was a guest at the traditional wedding ceremony of Oluwanigba Fayose, son of the former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose in Lagos on Saturday, said whatever misunderstanding they have had, has been put behind them.

He also cautioned against politics of bitterness, noting that the presence of the Chairman, Nigerian Governors’ Forum and present Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and erstwhile governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni at the wedding, should serve as a lesson to Nigerians.

“If you look at the former governors in Ekiti State – Governor Segun Oni, Governor Ayo Fayose and the incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi, they have governed the state at one time or the other but they were not in the same party. So, those of you who want to die because of us politicians, be careful,” Makinde said, according to a statement signed by his spokesperson, Taiwo Adisa.

“Politics is not something that should cause anybody to lose his or her life. We are moving towards the electioneering period, and I just want to use this opportunity to appeal to you all.

“If you also look at this marriage, the bride and groom are from Christian and Muslim families. So, people who also want to always fight on religious grounds should have a rethink.”

Makinde speaks on interest in 2023 presidency, plans to dump PDP

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday denied plans to dump the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor also stated that he has no intention to contest for the office of the president or vice president in the coming general elections.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that there had been rumours in some quarters that governor might defect to another party like some his colleagues did of recent.

Setting the record straight on Thursday on a monitored Channels Television interview, Governor Makinde said none of the information was true.

“No, no. People easily forget how we got to where we are right now,” said the governor who insisted that he has no plans to join the presidential race. “For this republic, there has been President Obasanjo, President Yar’Adua, President Goodluck Jonathan, and now President Buhari.

“All of them, if you look at them, they were called. Some stakeholders got together and said, ‘look at this particular time, this is who we really want to use.”

According to Governor Makinde, President Buhari had vowed not to contest for presidency after he lost to former President Jonathan in 2011, but some stakeholders later endorsed him in 2015.

Ahead of the general elections, he believes his party possesses people whom he describes as eminently qualified candidates to govern the country.

The governor identified some of them as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, among others.

For the PDP, he revealed that the focus of the party was on conducting a successful national convention.

“What is important at this stage, which I will solicit the support of PDP members and the generality of Nigerians, is please support us to have a successful national convention.

“There is no way you can become President, Vice President, even governors if you don’t have a party. So what we want to do first is to ensure that we get things right,” said Governor Makinde.

PDP Congress: Party members mobilise against Makinde in Oyo

Ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congress scheduled to begin on Saturday, some aggrieved members of the party in Oyo State have commenced mobilisation against Gov. Seyi Makinde.

The aggrieved party members from the 33 local government area at a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ibadan on Monday, passed a vote of no confidence on the governor, urging him to resign from the party.

Among those in attendance were Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola, Mogaji Nureni Akanbi, Alhaji Adebisi Olopoeyan, Chief Gbolarumi Hazeem and Mr Femi Babalola.

“Against the governor’s promise before and during the election, we have been neglected. Those who were not around during the election are the ones benefiting from government.

“We have accepted what has befallen us. We are prepared for the congress to ensure the party return to the people,” Akande-Adeola said.

The aggrieved members who expressed their displeasure, promised to ensure that the party returned to the people after the congress.

Akande-Adeola, a former leader of the House of Representatives, urged the party members not to engage in any violence or fight anyone, but mobilise for the congress.

“Go to your wards, mobilise your people. Don’t fight anybody. Record whatever happens and leave us to do the remaining in Abuja, “ she urged the participants.

Also, the PDP chieftain said that never again would they entrust their destinies in the hands of someone like the incumbent governor.

They also vowed to ensure they do everything to prevent Makinde from picking the party’s ticket for a second term.

But, Mr Akeem Olatunji, the state PDP spokesman, said that those calling for Makinde’s resignation are the enemies of the party.

He alleged that the aggrieved PDP members were working for the opposition.

“No real member of the PDP in the state will ask the governor to resign because he is the heart and soul of PDP in Oyo State.

“95 percent of our members are with Makinde. If those aggrieved are popular, let them prepare for the congress which is coming up on Saturday,’’ he said.
