S’Court judgment: Postpone Oyo LG election, Alao-Akala counsels Makinde

Former Gov. Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State has urged Gov. Seyi Makinde to postpone the forthcoming local government election in the state.

Alao-Akala gave the advice on Friday, while reacting to the Supreme Court judgment which invalidated the sack of the duly elected 33 local government chairmen in Oyo State.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the former governor is the Chairman, Elders Advisory Council of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.

Recall that the Makinde-led administration had slated May 22 for the local government election in the state.

The former governor charged Makinde to postpone the local government election to protect the sanctity of the nation’s developing democracy.

According to him, now that the dust has settled on the legality or otherwise on the sack of the chairmen, it is trite in law for Makinde to see that there is need to postpone the election.

He said that conducting the local government election as earlier scheduled would throw the state into another round of legal gymnastics.

“My advise to him is to sit with officials of Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) and look into the new development and do the needful which is to shift the election date.

“Fortunately, the OYSIEC chairman is a learned fellow. He knows what the law says on disenfranchisement, he knows what the constitution says about holding elections and consequences of holding a one-sided election.

“Apart from that, both the governor and the OYSIEC chairman have a name to protect. This is an opportunity for Makinde to correct his past mistake.

“He should not commit another blunder by going on with that election, which certainly will be faulted again by the judiciary,” he said.

Alao-Akala commended the Supreme Court judgment for guiding against the unguarded disregard of the sanctity of the constitution.

The former governor urged the judicial arm of government to find possible means of fast-tracking time bound litigation that could disenfranchise litigants of their legal rights.

He cited the case of Oyo State ALGON where the final judgment was delivered few days to the official end of the tenure of office of the litigants.

BREAKING: Supreme Court declares dissolution of Oyo councils illegal

Two years after Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde sacked all the local government chairpersons in the state and appointed caretaker chairmen, the Supreme court, Friday declared the dissolution of the local government councils as illegal.

The apex court in its ruling on today also declared the replacement of the council chairman with caretaker committees as unlawful.

Reacting to the ruling, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare hailed the judgment, saying that the judgement was a landmark achievement in the present government’s hard work to deepen democracy at the grassroots.

Mr. Dare in his immediate response to the judgment, noted that with the “ unsparing , unequivocal and unambiguous’’ judgment by the highest court in the land, it has now become crystal clear that no state government has the power to sack any elected council chairman or councilor, as correctly envisioned by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Dare commended the gallantry of the local government chairmen under the leadership of Prince Abass Ayodeji Alesinloye, stressing that their steadfastness and doggedness eventually paid off not only for themselves but for democracy as an institution at the grassroots. The minister also praised their legal team led by Chief Niyi Akintola for a thorough and painstaking legal battle fought almost gratis for the sake of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the cause of democracy.

Mr. Dare did not forget the immediate past Governor of the state, late Senator Abiola Ajimobi who he commended for his role in ensuring that due diligence was appropriately done in the conduct of the local government election and the profound leadership given to the local government executives in the institution and pursuit of the case until his death.

The minister said that he was particularly elated that ‘’ our party, the All Progressives Congress under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Caretaker Chairman, Governor Mai Mala Buni and the Oyo State Caretaker Chairman, Chief Akin Oke was able to finally lay this issue bothering mainly on tyranny of power by state governors to rest. While congratulating the gallant chairmen and councilors, Mr. Dare urged them to remain totally committed and loyal to the party in order to collectively win back Oyo State for APC.

Makinde calls for restructuring, says states running to Abuja monthly stunted Nigeria’s growth

Governor Seyi Makinde has once again called for the restructuring of the country and the decentralization of its economy.

This, he said will allow all states to develop their resources at their own pace.

Makinde stated this while receiving the UNILAG Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association at his Secretariat office in Agodi.

In a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Taiwo Adisa, the governor stressed that although restructuring may not solve the current problems completely, many of the challenges Nigerians currently undergo will be solved.

“At the end of every month, we are all going to Abuja cap in hand and that has stunted our growth everywhere you turn to. Even, the issue of insecurity we are faced with and economic challenges.

“Yes, a restructured and decentralized country will not be fix-all (solution) but it will, at least, put us on that trajectory where we can start dealing with other issues at the local level,” he said.

The governor also said “this is indeed a challenging period for us as a country across various sectors, education inclusive, and tertiary education cannot be left to the government alone. And it is also tied to our request for a restructured country.

“I remember in the late 70s my eldest brother was leaving secondary school and going to the University. 1977/78, you apply to various universities, you do their exams and then if you are qualified they put you in.

”And certain areas thought they were disadvantaged and what did we see, then we have JAMB for the entire country and then we started having grammar like ‘educationally disadvantaged’ and quota system’, ‘catchment area’ and all sorts of things, and what did that do for us? Basically, it arrested growth in that sector.”

He also told the visiting Alumni Association that its objectives were noble by asking for past students, such as him to come and contribute to the school in form of endowments, adding that “your reach will determine what you will get.”

Furthermore, he stated that with the NUC and TETFUND, everything has become centralized, leading to even more people calling for the country to decentralize “so that certain people can develop at their own pace without all of us having to go to Abuja, even in terms of the FAAC.”

“So, I will accept to co-chair the committee with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and we will roll up our sleeves and ensure we raise funds for the faculty your target of N500m.”

The governor went on to add that his government has always remained receptive to the idea of collaborating with academia and industries in developing Oyo State.

Makinde praised the alumni association’s offer to showcase his government’s developmental efforts in Oyo State on its website.

“Thank you so much for the offer of showcasing what we are doing through the website of the UNILAG Engineering Alumni. We also try to encourage collaboration between the government and the industry and academia.

“If we are doing good, tell us also so that we can become a little bit proud of ourselves, and if you also have things you feel the state can do in terms of collaboration on research, do not hesitate to send your request to us,” he said.

The National President of the Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association, Engineer Dideolu Falobi also lauded Governor Makinde’s development programs, describing him as a good ambassador of the faculty and the institution at large.

According to him, the purpose of the visit was to discuss challenges facing the faculty with Governor Makinde and discuss how all stakeholders would sit together and proffer solutions to the challenges.

Kidnappings: Makinde pitches tent with Man O’ War to secure Oyo schools

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo says his administration has concluded arrangements to engage the Man O’ War Nigeria to provide security and surveillance in primary and secondary schools in the state.

The governor made this known on Thursday in Ibadan when he received the National Executives of the Man O’ War Nigeria who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

He decried the recent trend of kidnapping of students, among other security challenges, which he described as worrisome.

He urged the organisation to double its efforts at the grassroots in order to contribute its quota to stem the tide of insecurity in the country.

“Man O’ War, as an organisation, is trying its best.

“I can testify to the role Man O’ War played during the elections that I participated in as governorship candidate in 2015 and 2019; so, I will renew my commitment in Man O’War.

“This is a period that Man O’ War will need to double its efforts and look at programmes at the grassroots level, where we can project more on the issue of citizenship and leadership for our country.’’

The governor said that there had been discussions with state’s Commissioner for Education on how to beef up security.

“Some of the schools are not properly fenced.

“The ministry recently submitted a proposal on fencing and having demarcations for all of the schools, but this idea of deployment of Man O’ War for security and surveillance is a welcome idea.

“We will look at the proposal and we should be engaging either the national or state command team to ensure that this can see the light of day.

“ I think it is something that we will do,’’ Makinde said.

He further assured the Man O’ War that he would resume his sponsorship of the organisation in his personal capacity.

The governor used the occasion to announce the donation of two utility vehicles to the Man O’War Oyo State Command and one to the National Command of the organisation.

Earlier, the Deputy National Commandant of Man O’ War, Gbenga Adedamola, called for the re-awakening of the culture of joining voluntary organisations like the Man O’ War among Nigerian youths.

According to him, this will build the spirit of patriotism.

He requested for assistance from the governor to make the organisation function better.

Adedamola stressed that the passion and commitment of the governor for youth development remained commendable.

ASUU condemns LAUTECH VC sack by Makinde

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), has condemned the ‘Step Aside’ order given to the vice chancellor of the institution by the Oyo State Government.

The union in a release jointly signed by its Chairperson, Dr Biodun Olaniran and Secretary, Dr Toyin Abegunrin, after its congress on Monday, said the state government did not follow due process in its action.

Governor Seyi Makinde had on Friday ordered LAUTECH Vice-Chancellor, Prof Michael Ologunde, to step aside until further notice.

The governor’s decision was conveyed in a letter by Olasunkanmi Olaleye, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology.

“His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State and visitor to the Ladoke Akintola University, has ordered that the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. M. O. Ologunde, should step aside until further notice,” the letter said.

The union, however, said that it received with shock, the directive emanating from the office of the Commissioner for Education of Oyo State, asking the Vice-Chancellor to step aside.

It said that the state government erred in its action because it was strange to the provision of the university act.

It denounced the VC’s dismissal, emphasising that state government lacked the power to sack the vice chancellor without the recommendation of the governing council.

It stated that based on the content of the April 16, press release, a congress of the Union held on April 19, insisted that the governor should follow due process.

“That the `step aside order’ violated the provisions of the University Miscellaneous Act as amended, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology law 2020 and the University conventions.

“If there is any perceived misdemeanour on the part of any officer appointed by the law in the University, due process according to the law must be followed to address such,” it stated.

The union stated that ASUU acknowledged the power of the Visitor to hire and fire on one part.

“And, that such power is premised on the recommendation of the governing council according to the extant laws.

“That as at today, the governing council has not been properly constituted in line with law of the University.

“ASUU LAUTECH therefore, requests that, to maintain industrial harmony on campus and the on-going restoration of the image of the University, the above resolutions should be considered with the necessary urgency,” it stated.

The decision of the governor, who is the visitor to the institution, was communicated in a letter through the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, on Friday.

The development is believed to be connected with the dissolution of the joint ownership of the institution by Oyo and Osun states.

He directed the VC to hand over forthwith to the principal dean officer in order not to interrupt academic activities in the university.

The letter reads in part, “His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo state and the visitor to the Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso has directed that the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. M. O. Ologunde should step aside until further notice.

Fayose calls Makinde ‘deadly’ for allegedly sponsoring thugs to attack him

The widely reported reconciliations between former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose and Governor Seyi Makinde has been thrown into the dustbin as Fayose on Wednesday attacked Makinde, saying he looked quiet outside but deadly.

He identified the spokesman of the PDP thugs to be a transport union chairman from Oyo State, saying they were sponsored by Makinde to threaten him.

He said this was enough to show the world that if such characters were supporting Makinde, it showed the kind of people behind him.

“What this gentleman was saying at a time before they came to the venue, they said Fayose, we will kill you, we are waiting for you here, we are going to kill you.

“This is the chairman of the Road Transport Workers in Oyo State. These people came with governor Makinde’s convoy. Everybody knows, who is this man? Is he the road transport worker in Ekiti?

“This is shameful for our party, I take responsibility, in the 21st century, thuggery is shameful for our party. You remember I was in Ondo, these same people came to attack me and I told Governor Makinde, so I am glad the whole world is seeing this.

“Governor Makinde, he looks quiet but deadly. Parading these people to wait for me there, they are over a thousand and they were saying they would cut my neck if I dare come to the congress and that was why I made up my mind that I must attend that congress. Even if I die there, I die, so I attended the congress, by the time I got there, they fled.

“So, I don’t think that this is right for Nigeria, it is not right for our party and is condemnable. If anybody wants to do election and you parade 200 buses of thugs, it is sad.”
