  • It’s all over if Man City beat Arsenal – Tony Adams

It’s all over if Man City beat Arsenal – Tony Adams

Arsenal great Tony Adams has questioned their style of play going into tonight’s clash at Manchester City.

Adams feels manager Mikel Arteta must find a ‘Plan B’ to upset City at the Etihad.

He wrote for The Sun: “When I interviewed Martin Odegaard for TV on Monday, he asked me what advice I’d give to Arsenal for Wednesday’s game at Manchester City. My answer was two words: ‘Don’t lose.’ If Arsenal can do that, the title race is still open.

“If not, it’s all over. I’d love nothing more than to see a boring 0-0 draw but I can guarantee that’s not going to happen because Arsenal only know one way to play — and that’s s**t or bust. Every time Arsenal have won league titles, it’s been when they’ve got the right balance between defence and attack.

“This current team doesn’t have that balance. I don’t think he has a Plan B, so on Wednesday night they’ll go to the Etihad and try to outplay the best team in Europe and probably not be good enough.

“Mikel has modelled everything on what his mate Pep Guardiola has done and, as a result, Arsenal are City Lite. But you can’t win the title by copying a better version because Pep has more resources in his arsenal than Arsenal… they have to try something different.”

  • Arsenal have to win at Etihad – Arteta

Arsenal have to win at Etihad – Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta insists they’re capable of winning at Manchester City after Friday night’s 3-3 draw with Southampton.

The result leaves Arsenal five points ahead of City before next week’s showdown, though having played two games more.

    Arteta said: “I cannot wait.

“These are the games you want to play. When everything is at stake you have to go there to win.

“This young team reacts in a way that is incredible, when it is against the odds, but the chances they created and the spirit they had… it was a joy to watch. The message is clear that I love them.

“We are down and they are more willing than anybody to win it. You can see that spirit and fight in the dressing room but it is clear we have to do defensively things better.

“It is not a final because there are still six games to go.

“The concern is turning around these moments, especially if the players in some moments are in doubt.

“In football you go through moments when you make errors and are not in a good moment but you have to come away from that.”

  • Man City into semi-finals after Munich draw, Inter set up Milan derby

Man City into semi-finals after Munich draw, Inter set up Milan derby

A 1-1 draw at Bayern Munich was enough for Manchester City to seal their spot in the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday.

Also, Inter Milan set up a derby with AC Milan after conceding a 3-3 draw to Benfica.

Inter Milan have reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2010, when they claimed the title.

They will now meet cross-town rivals AC Milan in the semi-finals, while Manchester City will face title holders Real Madrid.

“AC Milan in the semi-finals will be a special match and we are looking forward to it,” Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries said.

Manchester City did the harder part of their work at home with a 3-0 win in the first-leg but endured pressure from Bayern Munich in the first half of the second-leg.

Manchester City top scorer Erling Haaland sent a penalty well over the crossbar in the 38th minute, but made up for it in the 57th minute as he finished off a counter-attack.

Joshua Kimmich did not waste his penalty kick in the 82nd minute, but that was already too late for the Bavarians to fight for a comeback.

“We are exhausted. I don’t know how we (will) recover to play against Sheffield United [in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday],” Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said.

Inter Milan, meanwhile, brought a 2-0 triumph from Lisbon.

They increased their advantage when Nicolo Barella curled in a beauty in the 14th minute to break the deadlock in the second-leg game.

There were hopes for Benfica after Fredrik Aursnes’s header levelled things up in the 38th minute.

But these were gone when Lautaro Martinez’s clinical first-time finish found the back of the net in the 65th and Joaquin Correa made it 3-1 in the 78th minute.

Late goals from Antonio Silva and Petar Musa were not enough for Benfica after their home defeat last week.

Bayern Munich got close to the opening goal in the 17th minute when Leroy Sané had only goalkeeper Ederson to beat but sent his effort too wide.

Just a minute later there was a scare for the German record champions when defender Dayot Upamecano saw a red card for a foul on Haaland in a clear goal chance.

But that was overturned after the Norwegian striker was called offside.

Manchester City got their big chance once they were awarded a penalty kick after a handball from Upamecano in the 38th minute.

But Haaland wasted the kick as Bayern Munich held on to their hopes.

Bayern Munich were once again close to scoring shortly before the break following a counter-attack, but Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had his shot blocked, while Kingsley Coman’s rebound was also blocked.

Haaland was denied by Yann Sommer in the 55th minute, but ultimately beat the goalkeeper just two minutes later to put Manchester City ahead.

“The finishing from Erling was really, really good. He is so young. The experience that we have in this competition, the players feel it a lot,” Guardiola said.

Kimmich pulled one back for Bayern Munich from the penalty kick spot after a handball from Manuel Akanji.

But there was no more time left on the clock to fight for a turnaround.

“It is really annoying that we didn’t take the lead with all the chances that we had. I don’t think we needed a miracle today. We could have scored three goals or more,” he said.

In spite of the elimination, Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel, who took over just over a month ago after Julian Nagelsmann was dismissed, said he was “very satisfied” with his team’s performance.

“I think we had Manchester City on the hook again, even more so than in Manchester. But, like last week, we never had that moment of luck which you need to turn this around,” he said.

Inter Milan seemed in control after Barella got their opener in the 14th minute, but a defensive lapse allowed Benfica to get back in the game with an equaliser from Aursnes in the 38th.

The Italians got back on track after the break with Martinez and Correa putting the tie out of reach of Benfica.

But they got too comfortable and allowed the Portuguese side to answer with goals from Silva and Musa to at least claim a creditable 3-3 draw.

That was not enough though, due to the damages in the first leg.

“We had the ambition to reach the semi-finals and we didn’t, but the team gave everything on the pitch,” Benfica defender Grimaldo said.

  • Sadio Mane punched Bayern teammate Sane after City defeat

Sadio Mane punched Bayern teammate Sane after City defeat

Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane punched team-mate Leroy Sane in the face after Tuesday’s Champions League defeat at Manchester City.

Sky Germany report that Sane’s lip was bleeding after the altercation and the two players needed to be separated by their fellow team-mates in the dressing room.

The duo were seen on the pitch arguing in the latter stages of the match on Tuesday night, where City beat the German champions 3-0 at Etihad Stadium in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final first leg.

After landing back in Munich, Mane, who was a substitute for the tie, was picked up privately from the airport while Sane took the team bus.

Bayern Munich have not commented on the incident.

  • Man City goalkeeper Ederson ‘surprised’ by Brazil snub

Man City goalkeeper Ederson ‘surprised’ by Brazil snub

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson admits he’s surprised Alissonwas left out of Brazil’s latest international squad.

Brazil take on Morocco in a friendly this Saturday but Liverpool shot-stopper Alisson has surprisingly been overlooked for the fixture despite being his country’s first-choice option at the World Cup.

Ramon Menezes, interim coach of the Seleção as the search for Tite’s permanent successor goes on, has included Ederson in his 23-man squad for this weekend alongside two keepers currently plying their trade in the Brazilian top-flight: Mycael (Athletico Paranaense) and Weverton (Palmeiras).

Ederson told reporters: “The first moment I saw the list I was surprised, but it’s the coach’s decision. They are choices, I thought he would be on the list, but he was not.

“I do not know why, if it is a matter of opportunities for younger players. But we have to work, give our best, every day there is a good new player who can take that responsibility too.

“I think it’s too early for that (talk of him being number one). Of course it is always important to start a cycle, for me it is no different and I hope to start in the best way possible. But we know it is a long cycle, many things can happen, you can live many phases during this period. You have to work as hard as possible, maintain consistency so you can be here as many times as possible.”

  • EPL: Arsenal defender blamed for Man City defeat

EPL: Arsenal defender blamed for Man City defeat

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has been singled out after defeat to Manchester City this week.

Pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor insists Takehiro Tomiyasu wasn’t the major culprit after his error led to City’s opener.

He said on talkSPORT: “A lot of mistakes from Arsenal. The first one, Tomiyasu, it happens. Jack Grealish is pressing him, he doesn’t see Kevin De Bruyne running through.

“But it’s Gabriel for me. Every time I watch him, he’s the one that you always think has got a mistake in him.

“Yesterday the penalty that wasn’t given because it was offside, he got away with one there. He wanted to fight and battle Haaland and gives away a penalty.

“And then the goal, the goal that Haaland scores. It’s just poor defending all round, giving the ball away when you shouldn’t be.

“I’m all for playing from the back at times but sometimes – and Man City did it yesterday – sometimes it’s not on, hit the big man up front and play off him.”

  • EPL: Mikel Arteta speaks after Man City defeat

EPL: Mikel Arteta speaks after Man City defeat

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta feels they only have themselves to blame for defeat at home to Manchester City.

The result sees City move ahead of Arsenal as Premier League leaders on goal difference, though having played one game more.

Arteta said, “At the end it is disappointment because we lost. And I mean We lost it. It was an incredible battle between two teams and when we had them we gave them the goals. On the other hand, we had three big chances and we did not put them away.

“To beat them we have to be above our level because of the quality they have. We matched them and had them in moments, but the games are defined by individual moments in the box and they were better than us.

“We were really imprecise in starts of play, we didn’t read situations well enough and played fast when we didn’t have any advantage and put ourselves in trouble. OK, we can accept that. But the way we gave away the goals at this level, it is not possible.

“I didn’t see any difference there with City in the second-half. They went man to man in many situations. We got out of the press in some situations but we didn’t understand when to play and what type of balls to play in certain areas and we got punished.

“The atmosphere and performance were really good if you take away that we gave Manchester City three goals. I don’t know what more I can demand from the players to match that level. They are the best team in the world and we matched that level. After it is just about doing certain things better to beat them.

“I have more belief [to win the league] because I see a team going head-to-head with them. You have to go to the next one and in three days we have another game. I have more belief in my players.”

  • Mikel Arteta tops Man City shortlist to replace Guardiola

Mikel Arteta tops Man City shortlist to replace Guardiola

Manchester City have Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to succeed Pep Guardiola should the Catalan depart.

City are keeping tabs on Arteta, in case Guardiola leaves the club, says Four Four Two.

Guardiola’s future at the Etihad appears uncertain after the Premier League charged City with breaching financial regulations.

The Spaniard previously said he would quick the club over financial rule-breaking.

And Arteta is a potential replacement.

Arteta spent time as assistant coach at the Etihad under Guardiola before taking over at Arsenal.

  • Premier League charges Man City over alleged financial rule breaches

Premier League charges Man City over alleged financial rule breaches

The Premier League in England has referred defending English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester City to an independent commission.

The development is as a result of over more than 100 alleged breaches of finance rules since the club were acquired by the Abu Dhabi-based City Football Group.

The referral came weeks before the expected publication of a government white paper set to recommend the establishment of an independent regulator in English soccer.

The regulator is to deal with the game’s finances, club ownership and corporate governance.

Manchester City are the world’s highest revenue-generating club last season, according to Deloitte.

They are alleged to have committed multiple financial breaches between 2009 and 2018, according to the Premier League on Monday.

League rules state that charges such as those faced by Manchester City could, if proved, result in a club being expelled from the EPL in the worst-case scenario.

Offending clubs may alternatively be deducted points, fined or reprimanded.

It remains to be seen what sanctions the commission imposes on Manchester City.

But a stricter stance by the Premier League on club finances could deter potential investors in clubs like Manchester United, according to a sports finance lawyer.

Both Manchester United and Liverpool are seeking new investors.

This is in large part due to Middle Eastern investment in clubs such as Manchester City and Newcastle United and the collapse of a planned Super League, according to industry experts.

Manchester City, who were acquired by City Football Group in 2008, are also charged with failing to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation, which was launched in December 2018.

They are alleged to have breached rules relating to the provision of accurate financial information.

“………in particular with respect to its revenue (including sponsorship revenue), its related parties and its operating costs”, the league said.

The club, who have won the Premier League title six times since the Abu Dhabi take-over, said they were surprised by the league’s “issuing of these alleged breaches”.

“The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position,” Manchester City added.

The charges stem from a Premier League investigation into Manchester City’s financial dealings launched four years ago.

This was after the release of a tranche of “Football Leaks” documents obtained by the German publication Der Spiegel.

Manchester City were subsequently banned from the European Champions League by European governing body UEFA for two years.

But they successfully appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which overturned the ban in 2020.

The club were fined 30 million euros (32.28 million dollars) by UEFA, which CAS reduced to 10 million euros.

In addition to the charges relating to the club’s revenue and operating costs, Manchester City are also alleged to have not fully disclosed managerial remuneration from 2009 to 2013.

This was when Roberto Mancini was manager.

The club are also charged with failing to comply with Premier League’s rules requiring clubs to follow UEFA’s financial fair play (FFP) regulations from 2013 to 2018.

They are also said to have failed to follow the Premier League’s rules on profit and sustainability from 2015 to 2018.

FFP regulations are designed to stop clubs running up big losses through spending on players.

They also ensure sponsorship deals are based on their real market value and are genuine commercial agreements.

This is also to ensure they are not ways for owners to pump cash into a club to get around the rules.

“The proceedings before the Commission will… be confidential and heard in private,” the Premier League said in a statement on Monday.

“The Premier League will be making no further comment in respect of this matter until further notice.”

  • Why Real Madrid rejected Joao Cancelo

Why Real Madrid rejected Joao Cancelo

Real Madrid rejected Joao Cancelo before the Manchester City fullback joined Bayern Munich last week.

Cancelo has signed for Bayern on-loan to the end of the season on deadline day.

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports Real Madrid were offered the opportunity to sign the fullback. But despite some injury worries, Real declined with thanks – also because they didn’t want to block the prospects of young talent Vinícius Tobias (18).

Cancelo eventually moved to Bayern Munich, where he made his debut in the German Cup game against Mainz 05 (4-0) just one day after his transfer.

The Portugal international is on loan from Manchester City until the end of the season, with a €70m permanent option.
