UCL: Real Madrid fall to defeat in classic encounter at Etihad

Manchester City will take a slender Champions League semi-final advantage to the Bernabeu after winning a seven-goal first-leg classic against Real Madrid at Etihad Stadium.

City delivered a magnificent display as they peppered Real’s goal for long periods but Carlo Ancelotti’s side kept rising off the canvas to somehow keep themselves in serious contention to reach another final.

Kevin De Bruyne set the tone for a magical night of football with a diving header from Riyad Mahrez’s cross in the second minute and in-form Gabriel Jesus quickly added a second from close range as Real reeled under wave after wave of attacks.

Mahrez enraged manager Pep Guardiola when he hit the side-netting instead of finding the unmarked Phil Foden, who shot inches wide before Karim Benzema, inevitably, gave Real a lifeline by sweeping home Ferland Mendy’s cross after 33 minutes.

Real escaped again shortly after the break when Mahrez struck the post but City restored their two-goal advantage when an unmarked Foden headed home Fernandinho’s cross in the 53rd minute.

City were pegged back again when Vinicius Junior dummied past Fernandinho and ran from inside his own half to score a superb second for Real.

However, a brilliant use of advantage from referee Istvan Kovacs allowed Bernardo Silva to fire into the top-left corner for City’s fourth.

There was still no let-up and Benzema capped a spectacular game by showing nerves of steel to chip a Panenka penalty past Ederson with eight minutes left following Aymeric Laporte’s handball.

UCL: Michael Owen predicts outcome of Man City vs Real Madrid semi-final clash

Former Liverpool and England forward Michael Owen, has predicted the outcome of Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Real Madrid.

Both teams clash on Tuesday night at the Etihad in the first leg of the first semi-final encounter.

Owen predicts that “What a tie this should be! City were impressive at the weekend, and they will enter this with some confidence. We all know how desperate City are to win the Champions League, I am expecting a good performance.

“Real [Madrid] have done so well to get to this round, but I am not entirely sure how they have done it. Chelsea had plenty of chances to knock them out in the quarters, I don’t think City will be as wasteful.

“I will never write off Real in this competition, but I have to favour City. City will keep the ball and I can see them frustrating this Real side. I think Real will score, but I am going for a 3-1 City win.”

Michael James Owen is an English former professional footballer who played as a striker for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Stoke City, as well as for the England national team

Man City run riot against Watford after four goals by Jesus

Gabriel Jesus struck four times as Manchester City crushed Watford 5-1 on Saturday to chalk off another win in their battle with Liverpool for the English Premier League (EPL) title.

The Brazilian also provided the assist for Manchester City’s other goal, a stunning strike by Rodri, as the champions increased their lead at the top of the table to four points.

Hassane Kamara did get on the scoresheet for the visitors but Roy Hodgson’s relegation-threatened side were no match for Manchester City, who were relentless and efficient in attack.

Seven points off safety and having played more games than the sides immediately above them, the Hornets are running out of time.

Such was Manchester City’s dominance that they could ease off in the closing stages knowing the onus was now on Liverpool to respond against Everton on Sunday.

It also gave them chance to conserve some energy ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Jesus could savour his fine riposte to speculation about his future in the light of strong reports linking Manchester City with Erling Haaland.

    Pep Guardiola Vs Jurgen Klopp
Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City will have to hold off one of the best teams ever if they are to pip Liverpool to the title.

Guardiola’s side are one point clear of second-placed Liverpool after both teams won comfortably in midweek. In this weekend’s crunchy tie Manchester city play host to relegation battlers Watford whilst Liverpool host city rivals Everton at Anfield.

With six games left, it will likely take just one slip from either team to decide the enthralling race.

Guardiola has acknowledged City would have to win their remaining six games to be sure of winning the title ahead challenger Liverpool who are only adrift with just 1 point.

“Liverpool are one of the best sides in the whole of football history, we are facing one of the best teams ever,” Guardiola said this week.

“They have everything, that’s why being there with them means a lot. The players know it. They’ve faced them and they know.

“We don’t have any chance to drop anything, but we have been in this position and played with this pressure.”

Meanwhile Arsenal can increase Man Utd’s woes Manchester United’s decision to announce the long-awaited appointment of Ajax boss Erik ten Hag as their new manager from next season came just two days after the Dutch coach was given a stark reminder of the massive task he faces at Old Trafford.

De Bruyne, Walker set to miss Man city’s FA cup tie with Liverpool

Manchester city midfieder Kevin De Bruyne and defender Kyle Walker are major doubts for Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Liverpool on Saturday, coach Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

The duo were both substituted after suffering injuries in Wednesday’s fractious Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano in the Spanish capital.

It ended goalless but city progressed to the semi-final after going through on a 1-0 aggregate scoreline.

Recall that City had defeated Atletico in the first leg of the encounter at the Etihad stadium in England.

Both players were unable to participate as City held a training session at Millwall’s ground on Friday having travelled straight to London from Spain.

Guardiola confirmed playmaker De Bruyne had required stitches in a foot wound while Walker had suffered a twisted ankle.

Speaking at a press conference at the Championship club’s ground, Guardiola said: “They didn’t train today. We’ll see tomorrow but apparently it’d be so close after what happened on Wednesday.”

Manchester City will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals of this season’s UEFA champions League.

UCL: Liverpool cruise to semi-finals, Man City squeeze in

Liverpool and Manchester City will resume their domestic duel in the FA Cup on Saturday after the pair reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in contrasting styles on Wednesday.

Jürgen Klopp’s Reds proved too strong for Benfica in spite of being held to a 3-3 draw at Anfield a week after winning 3-1 in Lisbon.

They now meet Villarreal, conquerors of Bayern Munich, in the last four ties which begin at the end of the month.

Manchester City meanwhile endured a nervous night at Atletico Madrid as they secured a goalless draw in their quarter-final second leg which gave them progress 1-0 on aggregate.

Pep Guardiola’s English Premier League leaders now face a mouth-watering clash against record winners Real Madrid.

But they will first focus on Wembley where they meet Liverpool, a point behind them domestically, in the FA Cup semi-finals.

The teams also drew 2-2 in Manchester last weekend and Klopp took the chance to rotate heavily given the heavy schedule facing his players.

Star forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were rested along with defender Virgil Van Dijk but Liverpool always had an element of control.

“I think we’d want to do better overall, but we started the game well and could have scored one or two more goals,” Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson said.

“It was really comfortable but we’re disappointed at the goals we conceded. We got through to the next round which is the most important thing.”

Ibrahima Konate, who opened the scoring in Portugal, repeated the trick by heading in Konstantinos Tsimikas’ 21st minute corner-kick.

But Gonçalo Ramos scored to draw the visitors level from a break of the ball soon after.

“It’s fantastic for me to score in the Champions League for the first time, but nobody is happy,” Ramos said. “We ended up going out, but we have had a great journey.”

Farcical defending ended Benfica’s hopes when goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos spilled the ball and Roberto Firmino tapped in a cross from Diogo Jota 10 minutes after the restart.

Firmino then volleyed his second in the 65th from an excellent Tsimikas free-kick, only for Roman Yaremchuk and Darwin Núñez to draw Benfica level.

Only a brilliant save from Alisson stopped Núñez immediately cutting the deficit to one with seven minutes remaining.

But Liverpool settled down and saw out the tie.

Atletico Madrid started strongly in Madrid in the reverse of their defensive display in Manchester.

But the only first-half chance fell to Manchester City’s Ilkay Gündoğan, who stroked a shot off the post.

Manchester City were pinned back in a feisty second period, but Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo De Paul fired just wide.

“We had so much desire and hunger in order to achieve what we’ve done so far in this competition and now we can be proud of what we tried to achieve here,” said Atletico midfielder Koke.

“But we couldn’t quite reach the semi-finals.”

While defender Felipe was sent off in an injury-time brawl, there was still one more chance.

Ángel Correa struck straight at Manchester City keeper Ederson which ended Atletico Madrid’s hopes of a semi-final derby with Madrid rivals Real Madrid.

They had eliminated holders Chelsea in the last eight on Tuesday.

“We knew it was not an easy place to come, it is a hostile environment, it was a difficult night all round and how we defended and controlled ourselves over the two legs was incredible,” Manchester City defender John Stones said.

  • What will secure Man City proper recognition – Guardiola

What will secure Man City proper recognition – Guardiola

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says only by winning the Champions League will his team get the recognition they deserve.

City face a potentially season-defining six days in the coming week as they do battle with title rivals Liverpool twice either side of their Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atletico Madrid.

“We feel all together, inside, we will remember this period with big satisfaction for what we have done,” said Guardiola, whose side were beaten Champions League finalists last season.

“Sometimes (people say) we have to get the proof from outside to be happy inside. That is stupid. There’s no sense in always looking for proof from outside that what you are doing is right.

“But I agree with people that say, ‘You didn’t win the Champions League’ (because) maybe to have this recognition from everyone in the world outside you do have to conquer Europe.

“If it’s going to happen I don’t know but I think, so far, what we have done here we are incredibly happy with. We did many good things.”

  • I’ll extend my Man City contract for 10 years – Guardiola

I’ll extend my Man City contract for 10 years – Guardiola

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola admits part of his commitment to the club is due to his rivalry with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

On the eve of Sunday’s title showdown with Liverpool, Guardiola reaffirmed his commitment to City and said he would happily sign a new 10-year contract if he could.

“I’m under contract here, I’m so happy here,” said Guardiola. “I’m willing to stay here forever. There cannot be a better place to be, I’d extend the contract for 10 years. It looks like when you praise your team, you praise yourself, but that’s far away from my intention. My team, they are the best.

“But we absolutely wouldn’t be as good were it not for Liverpool. After 100 points, then we got 98 and they were just behind us. When you have someone pushing you, you have to make another step.

“Jurgen, as a manager, has been the biggest rival I’ve ever had in my career and I think what both teams propose is good for football.

“In Munich I faced Jurgen for one year and we were there all the time. Apart from the year we made 100 points, then they made 99, the rest were tight. The point is not a jibe to Jose – he’s an exciting manager and I was his rival, but I’ve been here five years and played many times against Liverpool.”
