Transfer: Haaland rejects massive Man City contract offer

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has rejected a £500,000-a-week contract offer from Manchester City.

AS report City put forward a “big offer” to Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola and father Alfe-Inge, but it was knocked back by his entourage.

Although it’s understood Haaland’s rejection of City is “not definitive” and he could still end up joining Pep Guardiola’s side.

But Real Madrid remains to be Haaland’s preferred destination.

Haaland is said to be “still waiting” for the LaLiga side to make their move as he wants to sign for the club at the end of the current campaign.

Transfer: Man City face deadline to sign Haaland

Premier League side Manchester City are facing a deadline to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland before his buyout clause jumps.

BILD says striker’s £64million release clause must be activated by April 30.

That means all clubs bidding to sign him must register their intention by then – while the Norwegian must also notify his current club of his intention to leave.

Sources in Germany suggest he will make his plans clear before the end of March.

A move to the Etihad is becoming increasingly likely while Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have all been keeping tabs on the 21-year-old’s situation.

However City are pushing hardest and should know in just over six weeks if they have been successful.

Diaz, Salah net as Liverpool maintain relentless Man City pursuit

Liverpool maintained their relentless pursuit of Manchester City with a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion to close back to within three points of the English Premier League leaders.

The Reds lost for just the third time this term in their midweek clash with Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

But they marched on with an eighth straight league win in Saturday’s contest at the Amex Stadium.

Luis Diaz bravely headed Liverpool into a 19th-minute lead by getting in front of Robert Sanchez, who was perhaps fortunate to avoid any action for clattering into the forward.

Mohamed Salah added a second from the penalty kick spot – Liverpool’s 2,000th goal in the modern Premier League.

It helped to increase the pressure on Manchester City ahead of Monday’s trip to Crystal Palace.

Brighton had gone three league games without defeat to Liverpool but fell behind in the opening quarter of the contest to Diaz’s second goal in a Liverpool shirt.

The former FC Porto winger attacked Joel Matip’s chipped pass over the top and got his head to it.

But he was unable to celebrate the goal after being wiped out by Sanchez.

Referee Mike Dean did not check back the incident on the monitor, meaning Sanchez stayed on the field, but Albion’s reprieve counted for little as Salah doubled the Reds’ lead.

Having missed a couple of presentable opportunities, the Egypt international fired a penalty kick right down the middle after Naby Keita’s shot hit Yves Bissouma on the arm.

‘Rangnick decided to ruin our Sunday’ – Ronaldo’s sister slams coach

The sister of Cristiano Ronaldo has intimated he wasn’t injured as he missed Manchester United’s defeat at Manchester City.

A hip flexor injury saw the 37-year-old ruled out of Sunday’s 4-1 thrashing and Ronaldo flew to his homeland on Sunday before kick-off at The Etihad stadium.

Roy Keane claimed that there was more to Ronaldo’s absence than just injury. Those suspicions were fuelled further by Ronaldo’s sister Katia liking a post on Instagram saying that he wasn’t injured.

The post, from a Ronaldo fan account which is followed by the man himself, emerged on Sunday prior to kick-off and said: “Cristiano Ronaldo is not injured and is not sick. The man is 100%.

“Good morning to you who, like me, are sad and angry because Rangnick decided to ruin our Sunday by taking CR7 out of the derby against Manchester City simply for tactical reasons, to defend himself more in the game.”

Liverpool best opponent I’ve ever faced – Guardiola

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City must maintain their high standards if they are to fend off Liverpool this season.

City were sublime in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Manchester United at the Etihad.

The victory restored City’s six point lead over Liverpool, although the Reds have a game in hand.

The two contenders will meet at the Etihad on April 10.

“In the first half we struggled to get going, but we felt from the first minute of the second half that we had the game in our hands,” Guardiola said.

“I’m so demanding, but I know my players’ limits. If the second half wasn’t our best level then I don’t know what we have to do.

“The biggest success for this team is to have is to be there again to fight the best opponents I have ever faced in my life in Liverpool.”

Man City outclass Man Utd to restore six-point lead

Manchester City outclassed Manchester United to maintain control of the Premier League title race with an outstanding display at Etihad Stadium.

City remain six points clear of Liverpool having played one game more after a victory that was arguably even more convincing than the scoreline suggests.

Ralf Rangnick’s side were without injured Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani, as well as Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw, who have Covid-19, and found themselves overwhelmed by the quality and intensity of the reigning champions.

Kevin de Bruyne was at the heart of it all. He put City ahead with a crisp early finish then restored their lead before half-time after Jadon Sancho put United level with precise low strike, the Belgian’s second hammered home in a goalmouth scramble.

City turned up the tempo after the break and got the goal their vast superiority deserved after 68 minutes when Riyad Mahrez met De Bruyne’s corner on the half-volley to beat United keeper David de Gea. The goal came via a deflection off United captain Harry Maguire, who endured a nightmare afternoon.

It got even better for City in the closing moments when Mahrez raced clear to beat De Gea, the goal being given after a lengthy VAR check for offside.

EPL: Ronaldo must regret signing for Man Utd – Barnes

Liverpool legend John Barnes insists Cristiano Ronaldo will be regretting not signing for Manchester City last summer.

The Portuguese forward was in advanced talks to move to the Etihad Stadium in August before making a last-minute switch to re-join Manchester United.

“His goal record is great for a 37-year-old, but I think if he had come to City, he’d probably have 25 goals now, because the good players there would have found him a lot easier,” Barnes told the Mirror.

“They would have had the vision and the technique to put him in, whereas I think some of the players at United simply don’t have that vision to put him in on goal.

“Then there’s the other argument that his legs have gone and he’s not got the pace he had four of five years ago.

“I think what’s probably got him frustrated is that he’s not had the same service he’s been used to in the past and people haven’t seen him.”

Ronaldo not seen at team hotel ahead of Man City clash

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo was missing from the team hotel ahead of today’s derby at Manchester City.

The Portuguese player was absent as Ralf Rangnick and 21 players met at the Lowry Hotel for their pre-match routine.

Tribalfootball reports that Edinson Cavani, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw were also missing as United players entered the plush hotel in Manchester city centre to prepare for Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash with City.

Ronaldo was seen taking part in full training on Wednesday.

The Portuguese superstar was not understood to have picked up any injury in sessions since then.

All eyes will now be on United’s team-sheet which will be released one hour before kick-off at 4.30pm.

Man City boss Guardiola admits Ronaldo has been a joy to watch

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says stopping Cristiano Ronaldo will see them beat Manchester United on Sunday.

Ronaldo has endured a difficult start to 2022, scoring just once in the calendar year so far.

Guardiola has admitted he is a big admirer, saying: “As a finisher he’s exceptional, I’m not going to disguise it was a joy to watch him these years.

“We have to explode our game, our strength to avoid Cristiano close to the box, because there he is almost unstoppable.

“When you are one of the greatest that he was in terms of being a goalscoring machine, you will always be there.

“He is so strong mentally. He handled pressure without a problem because he lived with expectation through his career and always responded in a positive way.”

He continued: “I remember when we played there and we were winning 1-0 and in control, perfect, perfect, and then the first time arrived he made a chance and Eddy made an incredible save.

“He hadn’t touched the ball but nearly scored. That is the quality and ability that he has.

    “We have to control him.

“He’s been one of the greatest in the last 15 years, alongside Messi. What these two guys have done, we’re not going to see again.

“When you achieve these things, under scrutiny every second of your life and today, even more now with social media.

“As a finisher he’s exceptional, I’m not going to disguise it was a joy to watch him these years.”

  • Man Utd need clear identity like Liverpool, Man City – Rangnick

Man Utd need clear identity like Liverpool, Man City – Rangnick

Manchester United Interim manager, Ralf Rangnick believes the Red Devils need to develop the kind of “clear identity” established by the likes of rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

All eyes will be on the Etihad Stadium this Sunday for the 187th all-Manchester encounter as the German leads his side to the reigning Premier League champions and current leaders.

Rangnick was brought in as interim manager for the rest of the season following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking in November.

The experienced German is due to start a two-year consultancy role at the club in the summer.

The 63-year-old has not ruled himself out of the running for the role as permanent manager.

This is a position he says Manchester City and second-placed Liverpool have reaped enormous rewards from getting right.

“I don’t even know the structure or the set-up at Manchester City,” he said when asked about Manchester United’s situation compared to Sunday’s opponents. “I know most of the people here in our club.

“My focus was, and still is, on developing the current team and getting the best out of this season.

“What is obvious, not only with Manchester City but also with Liverpool, (is that) they’ve had continuity and consistency on the position of their manager, their head coach, for the past five or six years.

“They have a very clear identity, a clear idea of how they want to play.

“I know Jürgen (Klopp) in person and I also know Pep (Guardiola) from those three years in Germany when he was head coach of Bayern Munich. He also has a clear idea how he wants to play.

“This idea is the headline for everything that happens in the club —- for recruitment, for any new players that they sign, or even for players that they at one stage will sell.

“This is, I think, the secret behind their success, that they exactly know how they want to play.

“They have a clear identity, or you can also call it a corporate identity, and this is their guideline for everything what they do.

“Not only probably for new players but also for staff members, for experts in different areas of the game that have become a bit more important in the last 10 to 15 years.

“This is what all the top clubs in Europe have in common. This is something that I think also at Manchester United needs to be developed and improved in the next couple of years.”

Manchester United have a surprisingly good record at Manchester City in recent years and Rangnick has been boosted heading into the derby by the return of Edinson Cavani.

The 35-year-old has not featured since the 1-1 draw at Burnley on Feb. 8, with a groin issue ruling him out of the five straight matches.

The return of striker Cavani is a boost given Manchester United’s struggles converting in recent weeks.

Rangnick’s men had 22 shots without finding the net in last Saturday’s 0-0 draw with relegation-threatened Watford.

Cristiano Ronaldo has managed just one goal in 10 games and will be desperate to get back on the scoresheet on Sunday.

“We know that we are playing against one of the best, if not the best team in Europe and the world,” Rangnick said.

“That’s why it will be about tactical discipline. A lot of defensive work will be necessary, a lot of sprinting, running, against the ball, with the ball, waiting for transition and then taking our chances.

“We created enough in our last 10, 11 games. Some times we converted them, like at Leeds United, where we scored four goals.

“But it’s correct we should have scored more goals, especially in the last game against Watford. We should have scored at least one, two, three goals in order to win the game.

“But I will be more worried actually if we didn’t create chances.”
