Man City star charged with four counts of rape

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, Cheshire police have said.

Mendy, 27, is due to appear in court on Friday and has been suspended by City pending an investigation.

The force said the charges relate to three complainants, over the age of 16, and are alleged to have happened between October last year and this month.

France international Mendy has been remanded in custody ahead of his appearance at Chester Magistrates’ Court, police said.

A police spokesman said: “Cheshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service would like to remind everyone that criminal proceedings against Mendy are live and that he has a right to a fair trial.”

Mendy joined City from Monaco in 2017 and has since been part of three Premier League title-winning squads, as well as lifting the English League Cup twice.

In a statement, Manchester City said: “Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.

“The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete.”

Since his arrival at City four years ago, injuries have limited his playing time, with the defender undergoing knee surgery in the 2018-19 season.

Mendy, who has played for France 10 times and won the World Cup in 2018, played against Tottenham on the opening weekend of the Premier League season but didn’t feature against Norwich last weekend.

Ronaldo informs Juve teammates of Man City decision

Cristiano Ronaldo has told his Juventus teammates that he expects to sign for Manchester City.

Speculation is rife that the Portugal international is ready to leave Italy following a disappointing campaign for Juventus in which they missed out on winning the Serie A title.

Ronaldo reportedly requested to be left out of the starting XI for Juventus’ opening match of the season against Udinese.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was subsequently named on the bench, coming on with half an hour to go in the 2-2 draw.

Sky Italia says Ronaldo has informed his Juve teammates he plans to leave this month and sign for Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s City recently U-turned on their decision to target Ronaldo after Harry Kane announced he would be staying at Tottenham.

Man City offering Ronaldo £230,000-a-week deal

Premier League champions Manchester City are offering Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo a bumper contract – but do not wish to pay a transfer fee.

Gianlucadimarzio.com reports City are willing to offer Ronaldo a two-year deal worth over £230,000-a-week but do not want to pay Juventus a transfer fee for the Portuguese icon.

The report says the Old Lady want around £25million for the player which would allow them to find a replacement so late in the window.

Juventus reportedly like the idea of taking on City’s Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus in a swap, but manager Pep Guardiola is said to have rebuffed that idea.

Reports across Europe claim Ronaldo, 36, is looking for a new challenge and his agent Jorge Mendes offered him to City last week for £25m.

EPL: 100m Grealish scores first Man City goal

Manchester City’s £100m man Jack Grealish scored on his home debut as the reigning Premier League champions returned to winning ways by thrashing newly-promoted Norwich.

Shaking off three successive defeats bridging this season and last, Pep Guardiola’s side assumed complete control from minute one against the outclassed Canaries.

There was some fortune about their first two goals – both set up by low Gabriel Jesus crosses – as Grant Hanley’s attempted clearance flew in off Norwich keeper Tim Krul before City’s second bounced in off Grealish’s knee.

However, the lead was just reward for the imperious hosts, who saw a neat Ferran Torres finish chalked off in-between those goals after the video assistant referee noticed Bernardo Silva’s clip on Milot Rashica in the build-up.

Aymeric Laporte added the third, steering home a corner from close range, before Jesus capped a impressive and unselfish performance by guiding Kyle Walker’s through ball across the face of the six-yard box for substitute Raheem Sterling to sweep home City’s fourth.

Riyad Mahrez also came off the bench to round off the rout, beating Krul one-on-one to hand Norwich successive 5-0 defeats at Etihad Stadium, having lost there by the same score on their previous visit in July 2020.

Transfer: Cristiano Ronaldo offered to Man City

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo has been offered to Manchester City by his agent Jorge Mendes, Corriere dello Sport reports.

The Portuguese, who boasts strong ties to Manchester United, is said to be looking for a way out of Juventus and has seen Paris Saint-Germain back away from a deal following their stunning signing of Lionel Messi.

Mendes is currently in London ‘talking about’ the potential move with City and hopes to provide Ronaldo with an ‘alternative’ to staying at Juventus or moving to PSG.

Ronaldo’s agent is ‘proposing Ronaldo to Manchester City on terms of balance’ but ‘there is a lot of work to be done’.

It is understood that Mansour is ‘thinking about it’ with the Daily Mail claiming Man City could buy Ronaldo for just £25m this summer.

There have also been rumours in Spain that Real Madrid are now thinking about a move to take Ronaldo back to the Bernabeu.

EPL: Guardiola sees defeat from new Tottenham coach Nuno

Son Heung-min’s superb strike proved the winner as a Tottenham side without Harry Kane beat Premier League champions Manchester City.

Kane was absent from the Spurs squad amid transfer speculation over a potential move to City.

But without him, Spurs marked new boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s first match in charge with a home victory in front of a full crowd, as Son cut inside from the right before placing the ball into the bottom corner.

Jack Grealish, who signed for a record £100m fee from Aston Villa, made his City debut but was unable to inspire a comeback.

Team-mates Joao Cancelo and Fernandinho came close in the first half, while Son also had a shot deflected inches wide.

Jack Grealish is not a threat to me – Sterling

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling does not view City new signing Jack Grealish as a threat to his place in Pep Guardiola’s team.

The reigning Premier League champions have smashed the British transfer record this summer to add the £100 million ($138m) playmaker to their ranks, snapped up from domestic rivals Aston Villa.

Sterling, who has seen exit talk sparked following a big-money deal for Grealish, told Sky Sports: “They have signed a great player and someone that wants to prove himself at the highest level. I don’t think there is any better club for him to try and do that.

“He is a player that always wants the ball, he gets in good pockets of space and he is creative. It adds another creative player to this team which I am really excited about so hopefully he can add a few more goals to my tally.

“When you add good players to your team it is always a good thing. He is a player I believe can truly have a great career here.”

Aymeric Laporte ready to leave Man City

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte is seeking a move away.

Laporte has reportedly expressed his desire to leave the club, which could face City with a centre-back crisis – something they know all too well from recent seasons, says the Mirror.

With Eric Garcia already leaving the club, an exit for Laporte would leave Nathan Ake as the only senior back-up to Ruben Dias and John Stones, who were influential last season.

The Spaniard was the original answer to City’s centre-back issues, and thrived during the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons, but struggled for game time last year due to the success of the Stones/Dias partnership.

Laporte has four years to run on his City contract.

I felt the same as Messi after leaving Aston Villa – Grealish

Manchester City signing Jack Grealish says he can sympathise with Lionel Messi after his exit from Barcelona.

Messi bid a teary farewell to Barca this week after La Liga blocked him from signing a new contract.

Grealish left boyhood club Aston Villa for City in an £100m deal last week and can understand why Messi was so emotional.

“It was so tough. I think everyone knows I reported back for pre-season as I was meant to, I went back for a few days,” Grealish said at his introductory press conference at Manchester City.

“It was difficult. In the back of my head I knew I might be going. I did a bit on my own… everyone saw how Messi was yesterday – that’s exactly the way I felt. Before I left at the hotel I spoke to the team and the staff and the players and I teared up a little bit myself.

“I felt like it was time for me to move on. I’ve always said how much I want to play Champions League football. They have a football club here that has got so much potential. They’re the most successful English side in the last 10 years. It felt the right time.

“I’ve been a Villa fan since I was four, my whole family has, I went to the club when I was six. There will always be links there, especially with the big family I have, everyone is Villa fans.

“At the end of the day I’m a City player now and will concentrate on being so successful here. I’ve come here to win silverware.”
