FIFA approve Man City defender commitment to Spain

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte has had his switch in nationality from France to Spain approved by Fifa.

The 26-year-old was granted Spanish citizenship earlier in the week and can now play for the country at Euro 2020 this summer.

Laporte has played for France’s youth teams but has not made an appearance for the country’s senior team.

A Fifa statement said he could play for Spain with “immediate effect”.

Laporte, who was born in France, joined City for a then club-record £57m in January 2018 from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao.

Last year, Fifa’s annual congress approved a rule change which meant players could switch countries if they had not played more than three matches for a country before the age of 21 and had not featured at a World Cup or continental tournament.

Torres hits hat-trick in thrilling Man City win

Manchester City twice came from behind to win a Premier League classic against Newcastle in their first game since being confirmed as Premier League champions.

Ferran Torres registered a hat-trick for City and his superb backheeled finish was the highlight of a remarkable game that swung back and forth.

Pep Guardiola, who surprisingly selected Scott Carson in goal – almost a decade on from his last English top-flight game – saw his City side dominate early on but fall behind to Emil Krafth’s powerful header from Jonjo Shelvey’s corner.

Joao Cancelo equalised with a deflected effort into the bottom right corner and when Torres expertly turned home Ilkay Gundogan’s free-kick 185 seconds later it looked as though the visitors could cut loose.

But Steve Bruce, who had called upon his Newcastle side to go toe-to-toe with the champions will have been delighted by the character his players displayed.

While they were forced to soak up considerable pressure, they levelled when City defender Nathan Ake was deemed to have fouled Joelinton, allowing the Brazilian to score from the penalty spot.

A poorly judged tackle by City full-back Kyle Walker handed the Magpies a second penalty just after the hour mark, with Joe Willock following-up to score after Carson had saved his initial spot-kick.

However, Torres and City struck back, with the Spaniard finding the top right corner from Gabriel Jesus’ delivery and becoming the youngest player to score a league hat-trick for a Guardiola team, when turning in a Cancelo shot that came back off the Newcastle post.

It rounded off a captivating encounter and brought up another milestone for Guardiola’s side, who set a new league record with their 12th consecutive victory away from home.

  • Nigeria under Buhari will triumph like Manchester City – Adesina

Nigeria under Buhari will triumph like Manchester City – Adesina

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina has likened Nigeria’s situation to that of Manchester City that rose from grass to win the English Premier League, saying peace and security will be restored to Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari.

Adesina, in his article, titled:: “Lesson for Nigeria from EPL,” said eight weeks into the season, many City fans were angry with the club over poor performance and had given up hope that the club would win the EPL.

He said forces which he called ‘Aiye’ were against City to bring it down, saying that the forces were already rejoicing until Manchester City bounced back to reckoning.

“Eight weeks into this season that ends in another two weeks, Man City (as the team is popularly called) was Number 13 on the EPL table, which consists of 20 teams. And 38 games were to be played to complete the cycle

“Fans of the team were already hissing and cursing. Their opponents were gyrating and doing a jig, saying Man City was doomed for another season.

“Recall what happened in the 2019/2020 season. Man City was eyeing a treble. Three back-to-back seasons as champions, and a record in English football. But the adversaries knew the record that was to be set, so they arrayed themselves against the team.

“Just as some forces knew the record that was to be achieved by Muhammadu Buhari as Nigerian President, and which he had begun to show since 2015 when he got into office, and they positioned against the government,” he said.

Adesina added: “Every team, big or small, strong or weak, set its sights on Man City last season, flexed muscles, summoned superhuman skills and strength whenever they were meeting the champions attempting a treble. The end result? Man City finished a distant second behind Liverpool, which had emerged like a thundering typhoon, to win the laurel in admirable fashion.

“The lesson? When you are high-flying, the centrifugal forces will come against you, and it would only take the grace of God for you to attain. Yoruba people call those forces Aiye. When Aiye is on your case, as it was against Man City, and it is against the Buhari government, you need God, and God alone. Aiye (meaning ‘the world,’ if freely translated) is the negative part of mankind. The pernicious, baleful, sly and scheming part of humanity. If Aiye gets on your matter, you need God and God alone.

“Man City failed to make record last season. Because Aiye was there. Liverpool shot out like a bolt from the blues, and won the league for the first time after 30 years. It won new adherents to itself from different parts of the world. Buhari Amazon, Jewel Ifunaya Chika, was one of them. She simply ported from Manchester United, which she had been supporting for years, and pitched her tent with Liverpool. More about that team later.

“Man City failed to make record in 2019/2020 season. Aiye was in full force against it. And the 2020/2021 season was initially not looking promising either. Eight weeks gone, the team was placed 13th on the table. It had lost 2-5 to Leicester City at home in Etihad Stadium, Tottenham drubbed it by two goals, played draw with teams that couldn’t hold a candle to it in the past, and was generally forlorn and limp. Aiye was having a ball, laughing Man City to scorn.

“Aren’t they doing the same thing against the government in our country today, due to unrelenting security challenges, some of them possibly instigated by Aiye themselves?”

Adesina said in November, 2020, the table turned for good for Man. City, just as it would inexorably turn for Nigeria soon.

“The team beat Burnley by five goals to nothing, and it was the beginning of the turnaround. Victory came after victory, to the extent that the team was unbeaten in 21 consecutive games in the different competitions it was involved in. From the ashes, the Salamander had risen. Fire could not consume it, and today, Man City are champions, fifth time in 10 years.

“Who says Nigeria will not rise from its current travails? Who says Aiye will always win? Not where God is involved. And God is involved with Nigeria, our own dear native land. Under President Buhari, peace and security would be restored. The economy would rebound.

“Life would be abundant for the people , and Aiye would be left standing small, holding the rump of the flag of a country it thought had gone into oblivion. The winner takes it all, the loser standing small (apologies ABBA).

“It was not glory ride for Man City all the way, however. It lost other crucial matches to Man U, newcomer Leeds United, and Chelsea. But did that alter the destiny for the season? No! Nigeria will also attain her destiny, and soon too. Amen, somebody,” he said.

Still on the EPL, Adesina also drew a vital lessons too from Liverpool, the darling of the last two seasons.

“It first won the European Champions League, and then the Premiership. The team was simply radiating, making conquests and winning new followers. Till Aiye stepped into her case.

Liverpool, which won the league last season by a wide margin, has been struggling in a pitiable way this season. It is exerting itself so strenuously, not for number one or two positions, but to end in number four, and book a place in the Champions League. What happened?

“Aiye went after the team, the way it did to Man City when the team was to set a record. This season, Liverpool has lost not less than eight games, most of them at its Anfield home, back to back. And to comparatively lowly teams. It was humiliated by Fulham (now gone into relegation), Brighton, Burnley, Southampton, and other minnows.

“Not to be forgotten is the 7-2 shellacking last October by Aston Villa, and the 4-1 pounding by Man City in February. Thy glory oh Liverpool is slain upon the high places. How are the mighty fallen! Just because of Aiye.

“Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League, losing to Real Madrid, which Chelsea came to beat home and away. On the day it was poised to change position on the league table, making a 4th placement sure, it was leading Newcastle till the very last minute of the game, when it suddenly crumbled.

“The opponents drew level in the 95th minute, the very last seconds of added time. Aiye in action. Man City bounced back from the ashes to emerge victors. It has won the Carabao Cup this season, and may win the Champions League on May 29, if her luck holds,” he added.

Adesina is optimistic that Liverpool would be back someday soon, as Nigeria would confound the enemies, and that it would happen under Buhari’s leadership.

He added: “The Good Book has said it, in Micah 7:8: “Rejoice not against me, O my enemy: when I fall, I shall rise again.” Man City rose. Liverpool will rise. Nigeria will rise. And Aiye would lose. And fall flat on its face. I can hear the Amen.”

Barca president to close Aguero deal ‘in coming days’

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is on the brink of signing Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

Off contract in June, Aguero will leave City this summer after ten years with the club.

A Bosman move to Barca has long been suggested and El Chiringuito’s Jose Alvarez reports Laporta is about to complete an agreement with Aguero. The operation is expected to be closed in the coming days.

It remains to be seen whether this will be enough to retain Lionel Messi, who would have demanded the arrival of his compatriot and close friend.

Like Aguero, Messi also comes off contract at Barca next month.

BREAKING: Man City crowned Premier League champions

Manchester City have won a third Premier League title in four years after closest challengers Manchester United were beaten by Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side are now 10 points ahead of second-placed United, who have just three games remaining.

It is the seventh time City have finished top of the English football pyramid and the fifth in nine years.

Manager Guardiola, 50, has now won eight domestic trophies since arriving in Manchester in 2016.City had the chance to wrap up the title themselves on Saturday, but suffered a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea at Etihad Stadium.

However, Leicester completed the job for them with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

It is City’s second trophy in a little over two weeks after they beat Tottenham to claim the Carabao Cup and they are also in their first Champions League final after beating Paris St-Germain in midweek.

Since being taken over by the Abu Dhabi Group in September 2008, City have won 12 cups and this is the third time they have clinched a league and EFL Cup double.

Barca reach agreement to sign Man City defender

Barcelona have reached an agreement to sign Manchester City defender Eric Garcia, according to Goal.

Garcia will move to Camp Nou on a free transfer when his current contract at City expires at the end of June.

The 20-year-old rose through the youth ranks at La Masia before moving to Manchester in 2017, but will return to Barcelona ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Goal has learned that Garcia’s switch to Barca will be made official before this summer’s European Championship, where he is set to represent Spain.

The centre-back has agreed to a wage 40 per cent lower than the club’s original contract offer in January due to the precarious financial situation Barca find themselves in amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Garcia has always dreamed of representing Barca at senior level and made City officials aware that he did not wish to sign an extension at Etihad Stadium at the start of the year after hearing of their interest in his services.

Chelsea defender reveals Tuchel’s words of inspiration

Following Saturday’s impressive 2-1 victory at champions-elect Manchester City, Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has revealed how manager Thomas Tuchel’s half-time pep talk spurred the players on.

“At half-time, we were still in the game and the coach highlighted that to us,” Rudiger told Chelsea’s official website. “He wanted us to go out and show spirit, which we did, and we all totally believed that we could turn things around.

“They are a very strong team but they are also human, and there will be times when they make mistakes. When that happens, you have to be ready to punish them and we did that at the end with our winning goal and it was a great feeling for everyone to get this victory.”

  • EPL: Man Utd comeback win keeps City waiting on title

EPL: Man Utd comeback win keeps City waiting on title

Manchester United virtually guaranteed a Premier League top-four finish and ensured rivals Manchester City must wait to be crowned champions as they came from behind to beat Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Having sealed their place in the Europa League final despite a 3-2 second-leg defeat by Roma on Thursday, second-half goals from Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and substitute Edinson Cavani ensured Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side require a single point from their remaining four games to secure a Champions League place.

A win for Villa would have sealed the title for leaders City – beaten 2-1 by Chelsea on Saturday – and Bertrand Traore’s emphatic finish into the top corner midway through the first half threatened to do just that.

Emiliano Martinez was equal to attempts from Greenwood and Marcus Rashford as United struggled to respond initially, while Dean Henderson kept out Ollie Watkins’ strike to deny Villa a second before half-time.

United levelled shortly after the restart when Fernandes calmly slotted in a penalty after Douglas Luiz needlessly fouled Paul Pogba, and Greenwood completed a four-minute turnaround when his low strike found the bottom corner.

A VAR check for handball against Greenwood was dismissed after Luiz headed the ball onto the arm of the United forward and the visitors successfully resisted late Villa pressure despite the loss of captain Harry Maguire to injury before Cavani confirmed victory in the closing stages.

In a frantic finale, Villa forward Watkins also received a red card for a second booking for simulation when under pressure from goalkeeper Henderson.

United are 10 points behind champions-elect City but will have the chance to move within four points as they face Leicester and Liverpool before the leaders next play.

  • Chelsea delay Man City Premier League title

Chelsea delay Man City Premier League title

Manchester City will have to wait a little longer to be crowned Premier League champions after they were beaten 2-1 at home by Chelsea on Saturday.

City, who made nine changes for the game, could still secure the title this weekend if second-placed Manchester United lose at Aston Villa on Sunday.

With three games left to play Pep Guardiola’ side are 13 points ahead of United, who have five games remaining.

United have three games coming up in five days, and even if they win all three City would win the title by beating Newcastle on Friday.

Saturday’s game also offered something of a preview of the Champions League final between the two sides, although both Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel left out key players.

Raheem Sterling put City ahead in the 44th minute, sneaking in front of Sergio Aguero to connect with a low ball from Gabriel Jesus, who had bustled past Andreas Christensen.

Within two minutes they had a chance to double that lead from the penalty spot, but Aguero’s soft chip down the middle ended in embarassment as it was easily saved by Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea drew level through a low drive from Hakim Ziyech in the 63rd minute, and then had efforts from Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi ruled out for offside.

City felt they should have had another penalty when Sterling went down in the box with Kurt Zouma behind him.

But Tuchel’s team went on to grab a late winner with Marcos Alonso’s scuffed shot floating past Ederson.

Chelsea beat City in the semi-final of the FA Cup on April 17 and will face them again in May 29th’s Champions League final.

  • Guardiola reflects on Man City’s journey after reaching Champions League final

Guardiola reflects on Man City’s journey after reaching Champions League final

Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City’s ultimate target is now in sight after guiding the club to their first UEFA Champions League final.

Manchester City produced a stunning performance against Paris St-Germain (PSG) on Tuesday to book their place in European club football’s showpiece event in Istanbul on May 29.

Riyad Mahrez scored in each half as Manchester City won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium to complete a 4-1 aggregate triumph in their semi-final.

Reaching the final has been a chief aim of the club ever since their take-over by Sheikh Mansour began their accelerated ascent to the game’s top table in 2008.

Guardiola has overseen the past five years of that journey, winning seven other trophies along the way, and he feels the club’s trajectory is now clear for all to see.

“I think reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League helps us to make the bigger picture,” said the Manchester City manager.

The Spaniard’s past success in the competition with FC Barcelona made him a target for the club years before he was finally appointed in 2016.

“What we have done in these four years is incredible, in terms of the Premier League, Carabao Cup, FA Cups, every competition we have played. But reaching the final helps us to understand what we have done.

“Reaching the final in this competition is so difficult. It’s the toughest because of quality of opponents, the composure you have to have, the suffering in toughest moments.

“We did it, we made an incredible Champions League season. We deserve to be there and we are going to play the final.”

PSG were weakened by the absence of star striker Kylian Mbappe from their starting line-up due to injury.

But they still hit Manchester City with a barrage of pressure as they looked to overturn their first-leg deficit.

Yet Manchester City withstood everything on a pitch unexpectedly covered in ice after a heavy hailstorm before kick-off.

They snatched the lead through Mahrez on 11 minutes after a quick break initiated by Ederson and then doubled their advantage through the same player just after the hour.

The Algerian was grabbing his third goal of the tie.

PSG then crumbled, with Angel Di Maria sent off and three other players booked in a petulant, ill-disciplined finale.

Defender Kyle Walker felt victory was the least Manchester City deserved for an outstanding performance in what has been an extraordinary season for the club.

The Carabao Cup was won last month and the Premier League title is set to follow, possibly this weekend.

Walker said: “We still need to finish the job in Istanbul, but it is the icing on the cake so far this season.

“Obviously we have an important game at the weekend against Chelsea, but we need to enjoy this moment. It doesn’t come around often.

“I can assure you that, I have been trying a number of years to get to the final. We have finally got there and it is full credit to everyone.

“I think this club needed this final, the players needed this final.

“I’ve said it numerous times, with the amount of talent we have got in the dressing room, for us not to be in the Champions League final is a disappointment every year.

“For us to finally get there is fantastic and it’s down to all the hard work, not just from the players but everyone surrounding the club.

“We’ve finally got there and hopefully we can do Manchester City proud.”
