EPL: Man City crisis deepens in Villa defeat

Manchester City’s crisis intensified as they slipped to another damaging defeat at Aston Villa.

Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers goals meant Phil Foden’s late reply for the visitors was little consolation.

Defending champions City have dropped to sixth in the Premier League, nine points behind leaders Liverpool having played two games more, while Villa have moved above them into fifth.

It is now nine defeats in 12 games in all competitions for City, who are winless in their last eight away matches, as their season continues to spiral downwards.

Guardiola made six changes from the Manchester derby defeat last week but it made little difference during another laboured performance.

Villa, who had won just three of their previous 11 top-flight games, earned a much-needed victory, one which keeps their top-four hopes firmly alive.

They were rarely troubled, although Emi Martinez saved well from Foden in the first half, and Villa continually found ways past City’s frail backline.

The tone was set inside the first minute as City needed Stefan Ortega, in for the injured Ederson, to twice bail them out.

He brilliantly turned Pau Torres’ header on to the bar, the goalkeeper clawing the ball out from almost over the line, having already saved from Duran following Josko Gvardiol’s mistake after just 15 seconds.

Worse was to come after 16 minutes when City were sliced open by Youri Tielemans’ brilliant through-ball. He found Rogers to advance and unselfishly square for Duran to beat Ortega.

City were unable to respond until it was too late and Rogers, who spent two years at Etihad Stadium without making a senior City appearance, sealed victory for Villa with a fine low finish after 65 minutes, making Foden’s injury-time strike meaningless.

  • Man City wallop Nothingham Forest 3-0 remain after seven winless games

Man City wallop Nothingham Forest 3-0 remain after seven winless games

Manchester City snapped a seven-game winless streak as Kevin De Bruyne played a starring role in a 3-0 Premier League win over Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

The Belgian created Bernardo Silva’s opening goal and then scored the second before Jeremy Doku rounded off a much-needed victory for the English champions.

City’s barren run included six defeats to leave them 11 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool before kick-off.

However, De Bruyne’s return to the starting line-up for the first time in nearly three months helped resume normal service at the Etihad Stadium.

City move back into the top four and within nine points of Liverpool after their 3-3 draw at Newcastle.

Pep Guardiola had to shoot down suggestions of a rift with De Bruyne on the eve of the game after bedding him back into action slowly with a series of substitute appearances.

The 33-year-old showed what City have been missing as he rolled back the years and could well have had more than just one goal.

Guardiola reacted to Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool by making four changes as Josko Gvardiol, Doku and Jack Grealish also came into the team.

It took just eight minutes for City to make the breakthrough.

Ilkay Gundogan’s cross was headed back towards goal by De Bruyne and Silva was in the right place to tap home from centimetres out.

Guardiola claimed pre-match that Ederson remains his number one goalkeeper but the Brazilian was again benched in favour of Stefan Ortega.

The German made a big save to deny Morgan Gibbs-White before Forest missed a glorious chance to put the Etihad crowd back on edge.

Chris Wood’s fine goalscoring form has been the catalyst to a fabulous season so far for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.

But the New Zealander was wayward as he fired wide with just Ortega to beat.

De Bruyne settled City nerves on 31 minutes when he collected Doku’s pass inside the area and coolly slotted into the top corner.

Erling Haaland has now failed to find the net in his last three Premier League games.

But the Norwegian did play a part in the third goal with the assist for Doku, who cut inside and fired into the far corner.

De Bruyne saw a free-kick curl just wide and was then denied a second by his international team-mate Matz Sels.

He was given a standing ovation when he departed 15 minutes from time.

City spectacularly collapsed from 3-0 up to draw 3-3 against Feyenoord in the Champions League eight days ago.

However, there was never any sense of a repeat as they controlled the closing stages to add a clean sheet to an all-round restorative night for Guardiola’s men.

Defeat leaves Forest still in sixth but now four points off the top four.

  • It will be my last year at City if… – De Bruyne

It will be my last year at City if… – De Bruyne

Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has opened up about his future at the club and how he could leave at the end of the season.

The Belgium midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and has held off talks of a new contract due to a thigh problem sustained in September which manager Pep Guardiola said put him in the wrong frame of mind when deciding his future,

De Bruyne spoke in the club’s most recent press conference about his injury and how he could depart the club if talks do not commence.

“Obviously when I started the season I knew talks would happen but then I had that thing (thigh injury) against Brentford and put that to a side,” said De Bruyne.

“I was hoping to be out for days but it ended up being eight or nine weeks and I would rather get back first and all the rest will come.

“I am not too obsessed with things but there is not much I can say. I am fine, I am happy, I just want to play football again and we will see.

“Talks will come, if no talks come it will be my last year. I just want to play good football.”

Guardiola admitted that the veteran midfielder has his doubts about his own ability and lacks the confidence he once had after a limited amount of starts this season which has left him deflated.

“He wants to finish here at his best.

“I don’t think he will be here when he believes he doesn’t feel he can be the Kevin that can produce and help the team like he has done in the last decade.”

De Bruyne has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in recent months as a number of clubs look to secure his services for free at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see what happens in the January transfer window when clubs are allowed to open negotiations with the City star who have been a crucial asset in the club’s most successful period in history.

JUST IN: Man City lose major premier league vote

The Premier League have approved changes to Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules after a crunch summit.

On Friday morning, top-flight sides gathered in London before voting in a ballot over the Premier League rules.

The competition had been forced to act after an independent panel found sections of the existing rules on associated party transactions (APTs) – deals between clubs and parties linked to their owners – to be unlawful after a legal challenge from City.

However, the champions called on clubs to vote against the amendments, accused the Premier League of rushing its consultation and raised the prospect of further legal action should they be enforced.

Yet the Premier League champions were dealt a blow after the English top-flight voted to approve the changes to ATP rules.

Despite injury woes, Guardiola believes Man City will scale through

Despite injury woes, Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City will bounce back in Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Sporting Lisbon.

City travel to Portugal after consecutive defeats to Tottenham in the League Cup and Bournemouth on Saturday, which ended an 11-month unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who is out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury, leads a stellar cast of absentees in Guardiola’s squad that also includes Oscar Bobb, Ruben Dias, Jack Grealish and John Stones.

Kevin De Bruyne could make his first appearance in seven weeks but is unlikely to start, while Kyle Walker, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji, Jeremy Doku, and Savinho are also not fully fit.

“You know the situation with Rodri, nominated the best player in the world,” said Guardiola at his pre-match press conference on Monday.

We know we will struggle, and we have to accept that, and it is fine.

“The games will be difficult; in previous seasons it was smooth. Personal reasons, injuries, we won six Premier Leagues in seven years. Things change, we have to accept that.”

Guardiola will come against one of his future rivals as Sporting boss Ruben Amorim takes charge of the Portuguese champions for the penultimate time before beginning his role as Manchester United manager.

The sides last met in the last 16 of the 2021/22 Champions League when City romped to a 5-0 victory in Lisbon and on aggregate.

“They have changed players but have same manager and same mentality,” added Guardiola on the challenge Sporting provides.

“Winning the league for the first time in 20 years and then doing it again last season shows what a good job he has done.”

Bernardo Silva scored twice in City’s 5-0 win over Sporting two years ago on his return to Lisbon, where he began his career at Benfica.

He urged City not to make excuses despite their injury woes.

“With a full squad, we are stronger, there’s no denying that. We have a lot of unbelievable players missing,” said Silva.

“We have not been able to count on Kevin for six weeks. Rodri is out for the season and other players are out for shorter times. But we never find excuses. This club was never about that.”

Both sides are unbeaten in the new Champions League format with seven points from their opening three matches.

  • I had no hint I’d win Ballon d’Or – Rodri

I had no hint I’d win Ballon d’Or – Rodri

Manchester City midfielder Rodri insists last season wasn’t the best of his career.

Rodri spoke to L’Equipe after being confirmed the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner on Monday night in Paris.

He said, “When they said my name, I had no information, obviously none. They had not told me anything, I had not received any communication. I was attending the ceremony like everyone else. This means a lot. I can only enjoy the moment, it is also extremely gratifying. It is an immense gift.

“My previous season was better than the one just gone, even if this last one was almost perfect. There were important moments. I never thought I could repeat it. I never believed I could reach this level, but with a recovery of form and power, and many matches without losing, then with the victory at the European Championships, there I started to believe.”

On Real Madrid snubbing the gala after learning Vinicius Junior would not be winning the award, Rodri added: “I’m not in their shoes, it’s their decision. They decided not to come and we have to accept that. I’m focusing on my club. I’ll go and celebrate this recognition with them.”

  • Man City’s star wins Ballon d’Or for best player in the world

Man City’s star wins Ballon d’Or for best player in the world

Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri won the Ballon d’Or award for the best player in the world on Monday evening.

He beat Brazil’s Vinicius Jr and England’s Jude Bellingham, both of Real Madrid, to the prestigious prize.

Barcelona’s Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati won the women’s award for a second time.

Rodri, a first-time winner of the award, was instrumental in helping his team win an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League trophy last season.

He was also named best player at this year’s European Championship after Spain lifted a record-extending fourth title.

The 28-year-old Madrid native is the first defensive midfielder to win the Ballon d’Or since Lothar Matthaus in 1990 and the third Spaniard to claim the prize after Alfredo Di Stefano (1957 and 1959) and Luis Suarez (1960).

While the award has been dominated by Spanish league players, no Spaniard had won since Barcelona great Luis Suarez more than 60 years ago, despite Spain’s “golden generation” that won the 2010 World Cup, the 2008 and 2012 Euros.

But Rodri, the player City coach Pep Guardiola said is “the best midfielder in the world”, finally ended that run with a unique skillset that has made his club the dominant force in England and helped Spain rule Europe again.

“Today is not a victory for me, it is for Spanish football, for so many players who have not won it and have deserved it, like (Andres) Iniesta, Xavi (Hernandez), Iker (Casillas), Sergio Busquets, so many others.

” It is for Spanish football and for the figure of the midfielder,” Rodri said on stage at the ceremony.

“Today many friends have written to me and have told me that football has won, for giving visibility to so many midfielders who have a job in the shadows and today it is coming to light.

“I’m a regular guy with values, who studies, who tries to do things right and doesn’t try to follow the stereotypes and even so I have been able to get to the top, and it is thanks to all of you.” he added

Rodri became the third person not named Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the award since 2008.

It was the first time since 2003 in which neither Messi nor Ronaldo made the final 30-man list of nominees.

  • EPL: Man City beat Southampton to move top

EPL: Man City beat Southampton to move top

Manchester City went back to the top of the Premier League as Erling Haaland’s early effort proved enough to beat struggling Southampton.

When Haaland shrugged off Jan Bednarek to turn Matheus Nunes’ fifth-minute cross beyond Saints keeper Aaron Ramsdale for his 11th league goal of the season, the visitors seemed set for a heavy defeat.

But a combination of their own dogged defending and some poor finishing from City, with Haaland the chief culprit, ensured a few home nerves before the final whistle.

The result extended City’s unbeaten Premier League record to 32 games. They are now only six weeks away from going a full 12 months since their last defeat, by Aston Villa on 6 December.

Although they deserve credit for the way they battled, the result did nothing to help Southampton’s problems towards the foot of the table.

Russell Martin’s men still only have a single point to their name almost a quarter of the way through the campaign.

They can take solace from the knowledge that the only previous time they failed to win any of their first nine games, in 1998-99, they stayed up, but Martin needs to hope Southampton’s owners show him some patience as he looks to change the club’s fortunes following their return to the top flight.

  • UCL: Manchester City spank Sparta Prague 5-0

UCL: Manchester City spank Sparta Prague 5-0

Manchester City cruised past Sparta Prague 5-0 on Wednesday to remain unbeaten in their Champions League campaign.

Erling Haaland back-heeled home a stunning strike, the first of two goals on the night for Manchester City’s goal-scoring machine.

Phil Foden, John Stones and Matheus Nunes also scored for Pep Guardiola’s side who climbed to third in Europe’s elite club competition with seven points after three games, while Sparta have four points.

Haaland brought the blue-clad City fans out of their seats at Etihad Stadium when he scored in spectacular fashion in the 58th minute, leaping high to backheel home Savinho’s cross from out of the air.

“What an amazing goal,” Nunes told TNT Sports. “I was speechless after that. When he scored a similar goal against Dortmund I was watching on TV so to see this live it was amazing.”

The 24-year-old Norwegian completed his brace with a more traditional finish in the 68th minute, easily slotting home a pass from Savinho to put his scoring tally at 44 Champions League goals in 42 games.

Haaland climbed level with Didier Drogba in 16th spot on the all-time scoring list in the European competition, although Drogba took 92 games to reach the mark.

Foden got the 2023 Champions League winners on the scoreboard in the third minute when he latched on to a pass from Manuel Akanji and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Stones padded City’s lead in the 64th minute when he leapt to head home from a superb cross from Nunes.

City were awarded a penalty in the 88th minute, for a foul by Angelo Preciado, and Nunes fired his shot past keeper Peter Vindahl Jensen.

While Czech champions Sparta had a few chances on the counter-attack in the first half, City pummelled the visitors with 22 shots to their five on the night, with 10 of them on target.

“We played against the best team in the world,” Sparta manager Lars Friis said. “We played against the best players in the world. We handled Haaland well and then he pops up with a goal like this.”

City, who drew 0-0 with Inter Milan and then thrashed Slovan Bratislava 4-0 in their first two games, next visit Sporting in the new 36-team league phase, with the top eight automatically making the last 16.
