Kevin De Bruyne reveals why he left Chelsea

Manchester City ace Kevin de Bruyne admits he feared for his career while stuck at Chelsea.

The Belgium star says there was no way he could imagine the success he’s enjoyed when struggling to make his way at Stamford Bridge.

He recalled: “My departure from Chelsea? I decided to leave because I felt I didn’t have a chance to play at the time. I didn’t see any other opportunities coming up, so for me it was the best decision to leave Chelsea and find myself in a situation where I felt I could start over.

“Did I expect it to end like this? Of course not, because at the time it was a very bad experience in my career, but I never doubted my abilities as a football player.

“Eight years ago, I couldn’t imagine playing for City, making the World Cup and all that.”

I study Kevin De Bruyne – Grealish

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish constantly watches Kevin De Bruyne to improve his own game.

The Manchester City playmaker has been one of the Premier League’s best players for several years.

“De Bruyne is my favourite player,” Grealish told UMM. “I think he is probably the most perfect footballer in the Prem. I try and take little bits really out of his game.

“Although I had a good season last year, if you actually looked at it my big chances created weren’t as high as other people in my position.

“This year my expected assists I think is the highest, and my big chances created is up there as well, so that’s what I wanted to improve on, and that was obviously really looking at De Bruyne and his game and what he does.”

EPL: City beat West Ham to secure 20th straight win

Manchester City extended their winning run to 20 matches and moved 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League as John Stones’ second-half strike was enough to seal victory over a resilient West Ham United.

Stones fired home his fourth goal of the season from Riyad Mahrez’s neat lay-off to keep Pep Guardiola’s side in control of the title race.

Fourth-placed West Ham gave City a decent game at Etihad Stadium and fought back to level through Michail Antonio before the break, after Stones’ central-defensive partner Ruben Dias had put the hosts in front.

But Guardiola, likened to celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal by Hammers counterpart David Moyes before Saturday’s fixture, once again came up with the right ingredients as his side improved following the second-half introductions of Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden.

City’s unbeaten record now stretches to 27 games and they will equal their longest run without defeat if they do not lose against Wolves on Tuesday.

  • Man City set away wins record in Champions League victory

Man City set away wins record in Champions League victory

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his side “have to be more clinical” despite seeing another dominant display sweep aside Borussia Monchengladbach for a 19th successive win.

Guardiola’s team – favourites to win their first Champions League title this season – were far too good for their meek last-16 opposition in Budapest, and perhaps should have added to the first-leg lead given to them by Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus.

With Wednesday’s triumph, Manchester City have now won 12 consecutive away matches in all competitions, which breaks the record for an English top-flight side.

The previous mark was already held by Manchester City, who won 11 games in a row away from home in 2017.

Additionally, Manchester City are the first team to record a clean sheet in each of their first four away matches of a Champions League campaign since their crosstown rivals Manchester United did so during the 2010-11 tournament.

During this season’s Champions League run, Manchester City have faced just nine shots in those four away games, allowing just 13 total touches in their box.

The win over Gladbach bodes well going forward, as Manchester City have progressed from all four of their Champions League two-legged knockout ties in which they’ve won the first leg away from the Etihad.

Gladbach, appearing at this stage of the competition for the first time in 43 years, had no answer and would need something close to a sporting miracle to turn the tie around when the sides meet in Manchester on 16 March.

Guardiola killed my self-confidence, says RB Leipzig defender

Angelino says Pep Guardiola did not trust him at Manchester City and killed his confidence, before he completed a permanent move to RB Leipzig.

The left-back joined City aged 16 but after some loan spells and a brief move to PSV Eindhoven decided to move on.

The Spaniard is now playing regularly and thriving under Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann, who he says had the “courage” to use him from the start.

“I had a rest when I was with Pep for six months, that was enough,” he said.

“I don’t want it again. That’s why I want to be on the pitch. I don’t like being out. I am thankful that I get to play most of the time. I had enough holidays.”

The 24-year-old was part of the RB Leipzig side who reached the Champions League semi-finals last year and returned on loan to the Bundesliga outfit this season.

Leipzig, who sit second in the table behind Bayern Munich, then exercised a clause in the deal to make his move permanent last week.

Asked about Guardiola and Nagelsmann, he said: “They both like to play with the ball, get the ball quick, there is one thing that is a big difference – one gave me the confidence and played me and the other didn’t.

“So I am thankful to Julian for the trust and sometimes you need, I don’t want to use a bad word, you need courage to put a player and he did from the first game.”

Angelino was on City’s books for more than four years before being sold to PSV in 2018, with the Premier League club then repurchasing the left-sided player the following season.

He played 12 times in all competitions before first being allowed to join Leizpig on loan in January 2020, but does not believe he got a fair chance under Guardiola.

“It killed me,” said Angelino. “The confidence was everything, when you don’t have the trust of a coach it is everything.

“I was judged for pre-season, two games, and then I didn’t get my chance until a few months. It is hard to play one game every two months so I am just happy that happened so I could come here and meet Julian and everyone here.

“It was a 50/50 experience. On one side I really learned a lot from Pep, he improved me as a player on the pitch and I have to be thankful also for the experience.

“On the other side I didn’t play as much as I wanted to or I deserved.”

  • My most important lesson from Guardiola – Sterling

My most important lesson from Guardiola – Sterling

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling admits he is constantly learning from manager Pep Guardiola.

The Citizens are on a record run of wins domestically, and take that form into their Champions League round of 16 tie with Borussia Mönchengladbach on Wednesday.

Sterling, who scored the winner in a 1-0 success over Arsenal at the weekend, spoke about what Guardiola teaches him in training and during games.

“Just that winning mentality,” said Sterling when asked by reporters how Guardiola had helped his team.

“That is the thing I have learnt most from him and to not be content with what you have done and keep grinding, keep getting better and try to win more and more.”

EPL: Man City defeat Arsenal in 18th consecutive win

Manchester City extended their winning run to 18 games as they continued their impressive march towards the Premier League title with victory at Arsenal.

The visitors have not dropped a point since 15 December and looked confident right from the outset, taking the lead with just two minutes on the clock as Raheem Sterling somehow managed to outjump Rob Holding to head in Riyad Mahrez’s cross.

City had four shots to Arsenal’s none in the opening quarter of an hour and it looked like the Gunners were in danger of being on the end of a heavy defeat as Pep Guardiola’s side poured forward at every opportunity.

To Arsenal’s credit they weathered that early storm and grew into the game as Kieran Tierney tested Ederson with a strong effort from distance, while there were glimpses of a threat on the break through the pace of Bukayo Saka.

City failed to kick on after the break although still looked the most likely to add to their lead as Kevin de Bruyne – making his first start in over a month – lifted an effort just wide while Ilkay Gundogan saw a shot saved by Bernd Leno before Joao Cancelo clipped a lovely strike inches past the post late on.

In the end, a second goal was not needed as City took the three points that means they remain 10 points clear at the top of the table with 13 games remaining.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are 10th and six points off the top six.

  • Man City denies making offer for Barca star

Premier League club Manchester City say they have not made any offer to Lionel Messi, with the Barcelona forward’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The Argentine superstar is free to speak to non-Spanish clubs and has been linked with several leading European sides, with City and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain seen as the leading candidates.

The Sun reported City offered the 33-year-old a five-year deal worth £600m last summer but have now presented the Barca captain with a new package of £430m, but a club spokesperson has told Goal that the speculation is not true and that there have been no talks.

It is also reported that City want Messi on a two-year deal at the Etihad with a 12-month option before another two seasons in the MLS at sister club New York City.

Premier League club Manchester City have made a new contract proposal to Barcelona captain Lionel Messi.

The Sun says City offered the 33-year-old a five-year deal worth £600m last summer but have now presented the Barca captain with a new package of £430m.

The report claims the Premier League side are not prepared to match their previous offer due to the financial climate and that Messi is another year into his career.

The forward is out of contract at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, meaning City would not have to pay a transfer fee.

It is also reported that City want Messi on a two-year deal at the Etihad with a 12-month option before another two seasons in the MLS at sister club New York City.

The potential package could see him commit to eight years with the forward also carrying out ambassadorial duties with the clubs owned by the City Football Group.

  • “Modern penalty”: Mourinho lists reasons for Tottenham’s defeat

“Modern penalty”: Mourinho lists reasons for Tottenham’s defeat

Tottenham suffered their fourth defeat in the last five Premier League games as Manchester City took all three points at the Etihad on Saturday.

Despite going close from a Harry Kane free-kick that hit the post when the game was goalless, City took control and led at half-time through a Rodrigo penalty before Ilkay Gundogan netted twice after the break on a difficult evening in the northwest.

It was City’s 16th successive win in all competitions and they now haven’t conceded a goal in seven straight home games.

Tottenham were unlucky not to take the lead when Kane stepped up to take a 14th-minute free-kick from 20 yards out, curling right-footed over the wall but his effort crashed against the post and City eventually cleared.

Instead, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute, after Gundogan had been clipped by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg close to the byline.

Referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot, VAR confirmed his decision and Rodrigo took the penalty, firing to Hugo Lloris’ right and although the goalkeeper got a good hand to it, the ball crept into the bottom corner.

Although they dominated possession, that was City’s only shot on target in the first half, but they added to the scoreline five minutes into the second half when Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling combined, with the latter finding Gundogan inside the area and his left foot shot from 10 yards went past Lloris, who again got a hand to the ball but couldn’t keep it out.

It wasn’t until just before the hour mark that Tottenham had their first shot on target, Tanguy Ndombele’s deflected effort looping up into Ederson’s hands, with the goalkeeper then playing a key role in City’s third in the 66th minute.

Spotting the run from deep of Gundogan, Ederson hit a 60-yard ball through the middle into his path, the midfielder holding off the challenge of Davinson Sanchez before sliding beyond Lloris.

However, Jose Mourinho pointed to fatigue and the concession of a “modern penalty” as contributing factors in Tottenham’s loss to Manchester City.

Speaking to Spurs TV after the game, Jose said: “Going in a football direction, I believe that in the first half, we were good, we started the game very positively, we didn’t fear them, didn’t have problems, didn’t have any defensive problems, even playing in an offensive way like we tried to do. Once more, unlucky, the Harry Kane ball, I don’t know how it’s not a goal, and unlucky with another penalty of modern days. But I liked the team in the first half, very positive.

“In the second half, when you concede a goal after five minutes, it’s very hard, because then it’s the fatigue plus the emotional side. The guys fought until the end, and I feel the result is too heavy, too heavy. It gives me another feeling… of if we get into that (Carabao Cup) final in the same physical condition as them, let’s go.”

However, Mourinho was asked for his interpretation of a “modern penalty”.

He said: “A modern penalty is one even if you touch with a nail inside the box it can be a penalty.
