PSG replace Man City as most financially-powerful club

French champions Paris St-Germain (PSG) have overtaken Manchester City as the most financially-powerful club in world football, the annual Soccerex Football Finance 100 report has showed.

PSG topped the 2020 edition with a football finance index score of 5.318.

This is based on the value of the current squad, tangible assets, finance available in their accounts, potential owner investment and net debt.

The study said PSG had reduced their debt by 70 million euros (£58.2 million) over the last year while Manchester City’s debt levels had increased by more than 90 million euros.

Bayern Munich came third with Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid completing the top five.

Manchester United fell eight places from last year to 16th in the report, mainly due to the depreciation in squad value and an increase in cash debt.

Europe’s elite sides accounted for 80 per cent of the top 30 but almost half of those clubs are owned by non-European entities.

These include organisations and individuals from the Middle East, North America and South-east Asia, the report said.

“This year’s report paints a positive picture of football’s collective financial health, but it also highlights the growing imbalance between the power of Europe’s modern elite, with some of the game’s heritage brands in danger of being left behind,” Philip Gegan, Soccerex managing director, said.

“In spite of Europe’s dominance, football is very much a global game with investment from football’s emerging markets very much underpinning its continued growth.”

The English Premier League (EPL) is represented by 18 clubs in the top 100, while the U.S. Major League Soccer (MLS) was the next best with 17.

Los Angeles Football Club were rated highest from the MLS in 18th spot ahead of local rivals LA Galaxy at number 22.

EPL: Title hopes lost as Tottenham beat Man City

Steven Bergwijn marked his debut with a superb volley as Tottenham won a bad-tempered Premier League affair with 10-man Manchester City to boost their top-four hopes.

The result lifts Spurs to fifth, four points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, while City remain second, 22 points behind leaders Liverpool.

The 22-year-old’s goal came with Spurs’ first shot on target, after Oleksandr Zinchenko had been dismissed for a second yellow card and City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan had seen a first-half penalty saved by Hugo Lloris.

Son Heung-min’s effort, which deflected off Fernandinho as it flew past City goalkeeper Ederson into the bottom left corner confirmed a valuable victory for the hosts.

  • Man City yet to accept Arteta’s move to Arsenal

Manchester City are yet to agree compensation with Arsenal that would allow the Gunners to name Mikel Arteta as their new manager.

Arsenal are finalising the paperwork for City’s assistant manager, 37, to replace Unai Emery.

Arteta was at Oxford on Wednesday night for City’s Carabao Cup quarter-final but it is expected Arsenal will be able to appoint him later this week.

However, City are growing increasingly agitated by Arsenal’s conduct.

It is understood there has still not been formal contact between the clubs, with a seven-figure release clause yet to be agreed.

Arteta has kept Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola fully informed of the situation.

A Manchester City source said: “It’s surprising to hear that plans are being made by Arsenal to unveil our coach as their head coach on Friday on the basis that no contact has been made by the club to discuss this matter.”

  • EPL: Guardiola stunned as Man City lose to Wolves

Pep Guardiola conceded Manchester City were well below their best as the Premier League champions suffered a shock 2-0 defeat against Wolves on Sunday that left them eight points behind leaders Liverpool.

Guardiola’s side was rocked by two late goals from Wolves winger Adama Traore at the Etihad Stadium, and City boss Guardiola admitted his treble winners lacked their usual sharpness and paid the price for letting nerves get the better of them with their second defeat of the season.

“It was not our best day. We let them run twice, got nervous a little bit and our process to create chances was not good,” Guardiola said.

“We were not organised and lost balls in positions we could not lose them in.

“We had problems on the counter-attack in the end and it was a bad day.”

It was City’s latest unexpected loss after their 3-2 defeat at Norwich last month, and they already face a huge task to catch Liverpool.

Remembering how his side overturned a seven-point deficit to Liverpool in the title race last season, Guardiola called on his stars to bounce back when City return to action after the international break.

“Wolves defend. They play long balls and defend, they then go on the counter. It is a physical team, a strong team so know how good they are,” Guardiola said.

“We had two chances, one onto the crossbar and with Bernardo Silva. They did really well.

“We are going to come back again to try.”

  • Transfer: Everton sign Delph from Man City

Everton have signed midfielder Fabian Delph from Manchester City on a three-year deal.

The 29-year-old, who had one year left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium, joins for a fee worth up to £10m.
The midfielder has linked up with Marco Silva’s squad on their training camp in Switzerland.
The former Aston Villa player, who has made 20 appearances for England, was part of the squad at the World Cup and the recent Uefa Nations League Finals.
Delph played 22 times in City’s Premier League-winning season of 2017/18, but his chances of regular football under Pep Guardiola have decreased with the arrival of £60m club record signing Rodri from Atletico Madrid.
“The club that I’ve been at has had success, especially in the last two seasons, but over the last four years we managed to win trophies,” he told Everton’s website.
“I wanted to be playing more regularly and the opportunity to come and play for Everton was too good of an opportunity to turn down.”
Everton, who finished eighth in the Premier League last season, brought in Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes earlier in July and boss Silva says Delph will add to the squad on and off the pitch.
“When I look to bring a new player into our squad, the first thing I look for above all the other things is quality and Fabian is a player with high quality,” said Silva.
“But what they can bring to our dressing room is also important and if you can put those two things together then that can only be good for the club.”

Livescore: Jesus takes Man City into FA Cup final

Gabriel Jesus kept Manchester City’s quadruple dream alive as his early header saw them past Brighton 1-0 at Wembley and into the FA Cup final.

The Brazilian netted the only goal of Saturday’s semi-final to keep City on track for an unprecedented trophy haul.

Pep Guardiola’s side have already won the Carabao Cup this season, and are still in the hunt for the Premier League and Champions League.

City, who will be back in north London on Tuesday night for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Tottenham, will face Watford or Wolves in the final. Those two sides meet in the second semi-final on Sunday.

It took just four minutes for City to take the lead. A lovely team move afforded Kevin De Bruyne plenty of space on the right to put a perfect cross into the heart of the Brighton box, and Jesus popped up unmarked to head the ball home.

The only other real noteworthy event of the first half, however, was a coming together between Kyle Walker and Alireza Jahanbakhsh, with a flare-up leading to the players going forehead to forehead.

Walker appeared to be the aggressor as he moved his forehead into the face of the Iranian, but a VAR review deemed it only worthy of the yellow card already dished out by referee Anthony Taylor.

Guardiola deemed it too risky to leave Walker on the pitch and replaced him with Danilo for the start of the second half, but it was Brighton who came out for the restart with more intent.

They nearly created a glorious opening from a corner as well after 54 minutes as Shane Duffy won a header and put it back across the six-yard box, but Aymeric Laporte just got a foot in front of Glenn Murray to deny him an open goal.

Brighton continued to press for a way back but City largely controlled the game superbly, with Guardiola throwing on the likes of John Stones and Fernandinho to help see out the result.

  • Premier League Table: Liverpool open six-point Lead as Leicester shocks Man City

Liverpool have brightened their chances of winning this season’s Premier League title following a 4-0 spanking of Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

Dejan Lovren, Mohamed Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho all registered their names on the scoresheet for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

With this win, the Reds are six points clear at the top of the league standings, as Manchester City lost 2-1 at Leicester City.

Elsewhere, Tottenham climbed to second with a 5-0 thumping of Bournemouth at Wembley, while Manchester United recorded a 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford.

  • EPL: Man City two points clear after thrashing Burnley

Manchester City opened up a two-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a convincing win over Burnley that maintained their 100% home record this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side were briefly knocked off the summit by Chelsea’s draw with Manchester United earlier on Saturday, but will remain top barring a huge Liverpool win at Huddersfield.
City’s procession towards the three points was initially held up by Clarets keeper Joe Hart, making his first return to Etihad Stadium after ending his 12-year stay in the summer.
Hart, a huge crowd favourite during his spell at the club, made superb first-half stops to deny Sergio Aguero and David Silva, but was powerless to stop Aguero firing home as the duo combined to round off a neat passing move.
Hart’s afternoon was soon to get a lot worse. Burnley barely threatened before half-time but their hopes were only truly extinguished when City added two more goals in two minutes shortly before the hour mark.
There was some controversy about City’s second goal, which came after Leroy Sane went down in the area under a challenge by Jack Cork.
Referee Jon Moss waved play on but the Burnley defence stopped, allowing Silva to retrieve the ball before it ran out of play, and cross for Bernardo Silva to sweep his shot home.
Burnley’s manager Sean Dyche and his players continued to protest as the game resumed, although it was unclear whether they felt the game had been stopped, or that the ball had gone behind before David Silva reached it.
It clearly played on the Clarets’ minds, however, and their usual defensive organisation was nowhere to be seen when, seconds later, a corner was cleared as far as Fernandinho on the edge of the area and he found a sublime finish.
From that point, the game was over as a contest, although the City fans still had more reasons to celebrate, firstly when a fit-again Kevin de Bruyne appeared off the bench for his first appearance since the opening weekend of the season.
There were more goals to come too as Fernandinho teed up Riyad Mahrez to curl home a superb fourth goal late on, and Sane converted a Benjamin Mendy cross.

Liverpool 0-0 Man City: Mahrez misses late penalty in goaless Premier League draw

Liverpool and Manchester City played out a surprising goalless draw at Anfield as the spoils were shared on Merseyside.
Neither side did enough to claim they were deserved winners but the visitors should have claimed all three points when Riyad Mahrez had a penalty in the closing stages, but the Algerian could only fire woefully high.
Mo Salah had the Reds’ best opportunity but uncharacteristically skied his shot way over the crossbar as his quiet start to the season continued.
The result leaves both sides level on 20 points with Chelsea at the top of the table.

  • EPL: Man City held to 1-1 draw by newly promoted Wolves

Aymeric Laporte’s header rescued Manchester City a draw against newly promoted Wolves as the visitors’ 100% winning start to their Premier League title defence came to an end at Molineux.

Laporte’s first goal for the club, from a smart Ilkay Gundogan cross, cancelled out Willy Boly’s controversial opener.

The Wolves defender had appeared to help Joao Moutinho’s inswinging delivery into the net with his arm as he put the hosts ahead 12 minutes after the break.

Raul Jimenez thought he had given the hosts the lead before half-time, only to be flagged offside.

City had hit the woodwork twice in quick succession in the first half – first, Sergio Aguero fired against a post before keeper Rui Patricio tipped Raheem Sterling’s long-range half-volley onto the crossbar.

Aguero then hit the bar with a free-kick in stoppage time.

A draw keeps Pep Guardiola’s side top of the table for now, with the rest of the weekend’s games still to come.

Wolves remain without a win since returning to the top flight, having drawn with Everton on the opening day and lost at Leicester last weekend.
