Sergio Aguero scores twice as Man City survive Burnley scare

Sergio Aguero scored twice in two second-half minutes to help Premier League leaders Manchester City fight back to beat Burnley and reach the FA Cup fourth round.

A John Stones mistake let in Ashley Barnes to give Burnley a surprise lead.

However, Aguero levelled from a quickly-taken free-kick and made it 2-1 from Ilkay Gundogan’s back-heel.

Leroy Sane ran on to David Silva’s pass to add the third before Bernardo Silva slotted the fourth into an empty net.

City’s win stretched their domestic unbeaten run to 26 games this season and keeps alive their chances of winning four trophies.

It is 32 games and 258 days since City were last beaten in the league or either domestic cup -by Arsenal in their FA Cup semi-final on 23 April 2017.

That defeat ensured City boss Pep Guardiola would end his first season in English football without a trophy – the first campaign he had failed to secure silverware in his managerial career.

This season is shaping up to be very different, with this impressive recovery keeping City in all four competitions and in with a chance of completing an unprecedented quadruple.

As well as being in the hat for round four of the FA Cup, City are 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League, in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and the last 16 of the Champions League.

  • Man City will not remain unbeaten – Guardiola after winning run end

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola reiterated his belief his side will not go through the Premier League season unbeaten after their 18-game top-flight winning run was ended by a goalless draw at Crystal Palace.

City conceded an injury-time penalty but goalkeeper Ederson saved from Luka Milivojevic, prompting Match of the Day host Gary Lineker to say Guardiola’s side have an “air of invincibility about them”.

The draw preserves their unbeaten record in the league this season and takes them 14 points clear at the top – the biggest gap between the leaders and the chasing pack at this stage of the season in top-flight history.

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal went through the 2003-04 Premier League season unbeaten, but Guardiola thinks City will not match that feat.

“I am not thinking to be unbeaten,” said Guardiola. “That is not going to happen.

“Maybe Arsene is worried about that but I tell him many times that 2004 run is for him. Today is completely different to 2004.

“There are now more strong teams, a lot of competitions, a lot of games.”

Guardiola left Selhurst Park with two injury concerns – striker Gabriel Jesus leaving the field in tears in the first half, and playmaker Kevin de Bruyne taken off on a stretcher after a heavy tackle from Jason Puncheon in the final minute.

    Palace energy gets deserved point

Palace were rewarded as their defensive grit and off-the-ball energy shone through in an enthralling contest.

The question, after they pressed so ferociously in the first half, was whether they were fit enough in the midst of the congested Christmas fixture list to keep it up.

But they did just that, with midfielder Milivojevic covering more ground than anyone on the pitch (12.69 km), though that will be of little consolation after his spot-kick – given when Raheem Sterling fouled Wilfried Zaha in the box in the 92nd minute – was saved.

The point means the Eagles start the new year outside of the bottom three, a point above West Ham in 18th – symbolic for a club that suffered seven straight defeats without scoring during their miserable start to the season.

They also secured only their second home clean sheet in the league all season, against a team that has scored 102 goals in 2017.

The downside to playing their energetic part in such an eventful contest was a first-half injury to centre-back Scott Dann, with boss Roy Hodgson already light on defenders in Mamadou Sakho’s absence because of a calf problem.

But they can take heart from creating other opportunities to win aside from the penalty – full-back Patrick van Aanholt testing Ederson in the first half and Andros Townsend wasting a gilt-edged chance to convert on 78 minutes.

With Yohan Cabaye playing further forward than he did in their defeat by Arsenal, Palace had a courage with the ball to match their resilience off it.

“I’m very proud of the team’s performance,” said Hodgson. “I know how difficult it is to play a team of Manchester City’s quality.

“Before the game we would have been jumping through hoops at having claimed a point, then you get a penalty late in the game, so there is an element of sadness at a chance missed.

“But I’ve said to the players: ‘Continue that level of performance week after week and we’ve got a good chance of staying in the league.’”

No crisis for City but wear and tear mounts

Not winning their 19th consecutive league game is hardly evidence of the wheels coming off City’s title charge, but there were signs that could be problematic in south London.

Their ninth game in December saw more onus on the considerable creativity of De Bruyne in David Silva’s continued absence.

But the Belgian’s set-pieces were off colour – only one of six deliveries was dangerous, and his passing accuracy (80%) was less than any other starting City player.

Now Guardiola may have to cope without him after that late withdrawal, although he appeared able to walk alongside club physios after being carried off.

Leroy Sane could step up to fill the gap in the coming weeks, but he struggled too. The 21-year-old won only half of his 14 duels, and was often second best to Palace defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

He was meekly dispossessed by the on-loan Manchester United man in the first half, and berated by De Bruyne over the timing of another run. Then he was booked for kicking the ball away in frustration.

It remains to be seen if Guardiola moves to bolster his attack by prising Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January, however the City boss said in his post-match news conference that he expects the forward to stay with the Gunners.

“He is a player for Arsenal and I think he is going to stay there,” he said. “In two days we have another game after that we have meetings. My feeling now is Alexis is an Arsenal player.”

  • Palace end Man City’s winning run but miss late penalty

Manchester City’s 18-game Premier League winning run was ended by a goalless draw at Crystal Palace, who missed out on the chance to become the first team to beat them in the league this season when they had an injury-time penalty saved.

It was a disappointing display from Pep Guardiola’s side, but they still extended their lead at the top of the table to 14 points – the biggest gap between the leaders and the chasing pack at this stage of the season in top-flight history.

It could have been worse for City had goalkeeper Ederson not saved Luka Milivojevic’s spot-kick after substitute Raheem Sterling had fouled Wilfried Zaha in the box in the 92nd minute.

However it could still prove a costly afternoon for City with Gabriel Jesus leaving the field injured and in tears in the first half, and the league’s top assist-maker Kevin de Bruyne stretchered off after a heavy tackle from Jason Puncheon in the final minute.

It leaves City with only one fit senior striker in Sergio Aguero who replaced Jesus at Selhurst Park.

While Chelsea and Manchester United trail City by some distance, they may see a small light at the end of the tunnel in a title race that appeared to be all but over before the turn of the year.

  • Man City can’t be complacent amid special run-Kompany

Manchester City are the runaway Premier League leaders amid their record winning streak but captain Vincent Kompany warned against complacency, pointing to the 2011-12 title race.

Unbeaten City travel to Newcastle United on Wednesday seeking to extend their lead atop the table to 15 points with an 18th successive Premier League victory.

Many believe the title has already been decided before the New Year – rivals Manchester United and defending champions Chelsea battling for second position behind Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, Kompany insisted City cannot afford to relax as the defender mentioned the club’s successful 2011-12 campaign, when they overturned an eight-point deficit to upstage United on goal difference.

“I draw on that, I don’t know if everyone remembers, but with six games left we were eight points behind,” Kompany said. “That’s why I’m probably always the first guy to come in and say, ‘No guys, we can’t really say…’

“I really don’t want that, so we push and push and push and no-one has the right to let their performance down and let their guard down.

“We have to keep it going. When you are on such a run you want to put it aside straight away and think about the next one, because you know how little it takes to lose that special feeling.

“We all have a role to say something [about dangers of complacency] – there are a lot of experienced lads in the team. We do mention it, but the manager will have mentioned it many, many times as well.

“But ultimately it’s the same for everyone – we all have that feeling and don’t want it to go away.

“It’s too early to draw any conclusions. We don’t need to focus on the league, or anything else other than winning the game and having a performance at the same time.”

City are back in action on Wednesday against Newcastle in the Premier League.

  • Rivals need ‘more than a miracle’ to challenge Man City-Eriksen

Manchester City’s rivals have a very small chance of halting the Premier League leaders’ march to the title, Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Christian Eriksen has said. City’s blistering start to the season has seen them go 11 points clear of second-placed Manchester United.

City are on a 16-game winning streak in the league, while Spurs are a massive 21 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side in seventh position. Eriksen, 25, conceded that Tottenham’s gap with the leaders was too wide to close but urged his team mates to improve after Spurs recorded just two wins in their last seven league games.

“I think you need more than a miracle to catch City, but we are focussed on ourselves and trying to come into a better position than we are in now. Of course we need to improve a lot but City is a long way ahead,” Eriksen told Sky Sports.

”We have shown before, with the team we have and the players we have, that we should have done better, and we could have done better.

“Now we have to prepare for Burnley and they are above us, so we need to be in top form.”

Tottenham were beaten 4-1 by City last weekend and travel to sixth-placed Burnley in the league on Saturday.

  • Man City boss Pep Guardiola still keen to sign Sanchez

Manchester City remain keen on Alexis Sanchez but may wait until the summer before making another attempt to sign the Arsenal forward.

City had a bid accepted for the 29-year-old Chilean on deadline day in August but the move collapsed.

Blues manager Pep Guardiola has discussed transfer targets for the next 18 months with the club’s hierarchy.

There are fears signing Sanchez in January could disturb the balance of Guardiola’s table-topping squad.

It is understood City think Arsenal believe keeping the former Barcelona player was a mistake and would be willing to do business next month.

However, with Guardiola’s side 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League, there is a feeling bringing in Sanchez then may cause disruption

City and Arsenal agreed a deal for the striker in the summer, but it was dependent on the Gunners replacing him.

When they were unable to sign Monaco forward Thomas Lemar, Sanchez’s move was scuppered.

It is felt he still wants to work with Guardiola and, despite interest from Paris St-Germain among others, would join City at the end of the season, when he will be available on a free transfer.

With midfielder Yaya Toure’s contract expiring in the summer, Guardiola would like to sign a defensive midfielder, a central defender and another attacker to take him through to the end of the 2018-19 season.

Talks have taken place over Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, while West Brom’s Jonny Evans – who City were keen to sign in the summer – and Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez are possible alternatives.

  • Kevin de Bruyne and Fernandinho close to new deals for Man City

Manchester City are close to agreeing a new long-term contract with star midfielder Kevin de Bruyne. The Belgium international, 26, signed a six-year deal when he joined City from Wolfsburg for a club record £55m in 2015.

City want to recognise De Bruyne’s stellar performances in their 16-match winning run in the Premier League, in addition to extending his deal.

“I am very happy and I have no feeling to go anywhere else,” De Bruyne said.

The former Chelsea player has scored six goals and assisted eight in the Premier League this season and is already a leading contender for the major player of the year awards.

City also expect to agree a new contract with Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho, whose deal expires at the end of the season.

  • Man City thrash Tottenham 4-1 for 16th consecutive win

Manchester City marched to their 16th successive league win as they thumped Tottenham to extend their Premier League lead to 14 points.

City took the lead when Ilkay Gundogan headed in from Leroy’s Sane’s corner before Kevin de Bruyne smashed home the second after the break.

Raheem Sterling tapped in for 3-0 from Sane’s pass and added his second when he slotted under keeper Hugo Lloris.

Christian Eriksen fired in a consolation for Spurs in stoppage time.

City could have had another but Gabriel Jesus missed a penalty with the score at 2-0.

  • Jose Mourinho: Man Utd boss asked to clarify comments about Man City

Jose Mourinho: Man Utd boss asked to clarify comments about Man City

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been asked to clarify the comments he made before Sunday’s derby defeat by Manchester City.

The Football Association has requested observations from the Portuguese regarding his pre-match news conference on the Friday before the game.

Mourinho suggested City players go to ground easily, saying: “A little bit of wind and they fall.”

He has until 18:00 GMT on Monday to respond to the FA.

Mourinho, 54, also said he did not think he would be allowed to make to make a political statement on the touchline like Guardiola, who has recently worn a yellow ribbon – a symbol of protest against the imprisonment of pro-independence politicians in the Spanish region of Catalonia.

United went on to lose the game 2-1 at Old Trafford, which sent City 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Mourinho had milk thrown at him outside the Old Trafford dressing rooms after objecting to City’s post-match celebrations and said the incident was “a question of diversity in behaviour, diversity in education”.

  • Silva is an ‘animal’ says Guardiola after Man City’s record 15th win

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola praised the will to win of “animal” David Silva after his goals helped the Premier League leaders thrash Swansea and extend their record run of consecutive top-flight wins to 15.

Silva scored twice and further goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero ensured City maintained their 11-point lead over Manchester United at the top of the table, while Swansea remain bottom.

The Spain playmaker elegantly flicked the fluent visitors in front from close range before De Bruyne’s whipped free-kick evaded several players on its way in.

The procession continued after the interval as the elegant Silva delicately scooped the ball over Lukasz Fabianski for City’s third.

Aguero then surged into the penalty area and drove in a late fourth as Swansea’s sixth defeat from nine home league matches this season left them rooted to the foot of the table, two points adrift of safety.

“David is hugely competitive, everyone knows his skills, there is no doubt – a blind guy is able to see that – but you cannot imagine how competitive he is,” Guardiola told BBC Radio 5 live.

“He is a stylish guy, but he is an animal, always wanting to win games.”

City have now scored 52 times in 17 Premier League games, with Silva getting four in three games after also netting in the 2-1 wins over West Ham and Manchester United.

“It is so important for us that not just Gabriel (Jesus) or Sergio (Aguero) score,” added Guardiola. “Our attacking midfielders, our wingers, our set pieces we can score goals and on the counter-attack, that’s why I’m delighted for David that he is scoring goals.”
