AFCON 2023: United delay Onana, set to join Cameroon team one day before opening match

Manchester United have told Cameroonian goalkeeper, Andre Onana to delay for few more days before traveling to represent his country at AFCON.

United have explained that Andre Onana will play against Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday, before flying to join up with his Cameroon team mates for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Onana is expected to be available for the Indomitable Lions’ first game in Ivory Coast.

United have persuaded Cameroon to let the player stay for the Spurs game at Old Trafford on January 14.

All clubs are obliged under FIFA rules to release players for the AFCON two weeks earlier.

The two sides have now reached an agreement for Onana to play in goal against Spurs before leaving for Afcon straight after the game. It remains to be seen if he starts Cameroon’s opening Group C match against Guinea as well.

The match between Cameroon and Guinea will hold on the 15th of January.

  • Former Man United goalkeeper Van der Sar moved to intensive care

Former Man United goalkeeper Van der Sar moved to intensive care

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has been moved to a hospital in the Netherlands, from Croatia after suffering a brain haemorrhage, his wife Annemarie said on Saturday.

Annemarie told Ajax Amsterdam FC that her husband had been moved to the intensive care unit of the hospital in the Netherlands after a brain bleed last week.

The 52-year-old Van der Sar, who was admitted to a Split hospital while on holiday in Croatia, would remain in the intensive care in spite of him being in stable condition and out of immediate danger.

“Edwin has been repatriated from Croatia on Friday evening and is currently in the intensive care unit of a Dutch hospital.

“His situation remains the same; stable, in a non-life-threatening condition and communicative.

“The Van der Sar family would like to express their deep gratitude to the ‘University Hospital of Split’ for their great care during the last week,” Ajax Amsterdam FC quoted Annemarie as saying.

Van der Sar was until recently, a director at Ajax Amsterdam, where was a goalkeeper from 1990 to 1999.

  • Why Man United must pay Ronaldo £10m to leave in January

Why Man United must pay Ronaldo £10m to leave in January

Manchester United striker, Cristiano Ronaldo, has not featured much for the Red Devils this season and reports from England suggest he would be paid almost £10 million if the club wants to get him off the books during the next transfer window.

Ronaldo seems to have fallen out favour with his manager, Erik ten Hag, as he was axed for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea, where the Red Devils played out a 1-1 draw.

The Dutch tactician took the decision after the 37-year-old refused to come off the substitutes’ bench and subsequently walked off the pitch in last week’s win over Spurs.

The whole incident has cast more doubt on Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford, despite Ten Hag’s admission that he was missed in the Chelsea draw.

However, if United want to get rid of the Portuguese star before his contract expires at the end of the season, they are staring at a pay-off in eight figures.

Ronaldo is expected to earn around £9.6m in basic wages until June, regardless of any bonus payments for league placings or trophies.

But it is understood Man United have the option of tearing up his deal if he did indeed refuse to come on as a substitute and was deemed to be in breach of contract.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo returned to Man Utd training on Tuesday, October 26, after he was dropped for Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

Erik ten Hag said Ronaldo is back in United’s matchday squad for Thursday’s Europa League game against Sheriff Tiraspol at Old Trafford, adding that Raphael Varane will be out until after the World Cup.

  • EPL: Jorginho, Casemiro score as Chelsea, Man united share spoils

EPL: Jorginho, Casemiro score as Chelsea, Man united share spoils

Luiz Jorginho’s dying minute goal wasn’t enough to secure three points  for Chelsea Football Club as Manchester United rallied back courtesy of new boy Casemiro who scored for Man United in the loss time of the encounter to share the spoils.

Stuart Attwell wasted no time before pointing to  the spot as Armando Broja goes down inside the box under pressure from Scott McTominay in the 83rd minute.

Jorginho was made a long time to wait to take the spot kick but sends David de Gea the wrong way and Stamford Bridge erupts.

Man united exhibited a never give up spirit despite conceding a penalty goal late in the match when Anthony Elanga fizzes a dangerous ball across the face of goal as Manchester United mount pressure on the home side.

Chelsea were so close to three points but Casemiro snatches a point for Manchester United right at the death to ensure that they share the spoils.

  • Man United lining up £39m bid for Atalanta defender Romero

Man United lining up £39m bid for Atalanta defender Romero

Premier League giants Manchester United are preparing a £39million bid for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero, according to reports.

Atalanta are reportedly planning to make Romero’s loan from Juventus permanent for £21.5m before cashing in on his services.

But Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Atalanta will take up an option in the 23-year-old’s loan deal to sign him permanently.

The fee is believed to be £21.5m – but some rumours suggest it could be as low as £13.75m.

Reports claim the Serie A side will then look to sell Romero for €45m – around £39m – and make a huge profit.
And Man United are said to be leading the race for the Argentina international’s signature.

Romero has been one of Atalanta’s best players this term, making 31 Serie A appearances to help them finish third and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

And he’s been recognised for his efforts – picking up the Italian league’s best defender award for the 2020-21 season.

After starting his career in his native Argentina, Romero signed for Italian side Genoa in July 2018.

The defender’s impressive performances in Serie A persuaded Juventus to sign him a year later, although he was immediately loaned back to Genoa for the 2019-20 season.

Romero was then sent to Atalanta on a two-year loan in September 2020 with an option to buy.

Man United are believed to want a new centre back this summer to partner skipper Harry Maguire – and have been linked with several defenders.

Real Madrid pair Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane are both said to be on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s shortlist – along with Sevilla star Jules Kounde.

  • EPL: Man United draw 1-1 against West Brom

EPL: Man United draw 1-1 against West Brom

Manchester United have been held to a 1-1 draw away at West Brom in the English Premier League game played on Sunday.

Mbaye Diagne opened the scoring for the home side in the second minute of the game with a header beyond David Gea.

Bruno Fernandes equalised in the 44th minute for the visitors who couldn’t find a winner to keep their title hope alive.

United are now seven points behind Manchester City who still have a game in hand.

It has become apparent in recent weeks that United are extremely unlikely to get their hands on the title for the first time in eight years and another mediocre team performance wasn’t enough for United to claim three points against a team that will likely be playing Championship football next season.

United conceded after just 90 seconds when Mbaye Diagne headed beyond David de Gea after beating Victor Lindelof to the ball.

  • Man United concedes in stoppage time, draws with Everton 3-3

Man United concedes in stoppage time, draws with Everton 3-3

Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalized in the fifth minute of stoppage time for Everton to draw 3-3 at Manchester United, which squandered a chance to move level on points with first-placed Manchester City in the English Premier League on Saturday.

It looked like a goalkeeper error by Robin Olsen, who let a header from Scott McTominay squirm past him in the 70th minute, would gift United a victory at Old Trafford.

However, in the last play of the game, a free kick from Lucas Digne was glanced on and Calvert-Lewin controlled the ball before prodding it past David De Gea.

United is two points behind City, which has two games in hand — the first coming on Sunday at Liverpool.

United led 2-0 at halftime thanks to Edinson Cavani’s header and a nonchalant strike by Bruno Fernandes, who floated a long-range shot over Olsen and into the corner after producing a dummy to create some space outside the area.

Everton responded with two goals in a four-minute span early in the second half, through Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez.

Calvert-Lewin’s goal marked a remarkable end to a night that started with both sides paying their respects on the 63rd anniversary of the Munich air disaster.

It ended in a scoreline that brought back memories of a 4-4 draw between United and Everton at Old Trafford in 2012 that helped City win the league that season.

“We played some good football in the second half but conceded three goals from three shots on target. When you do that it is disappointing,” said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose team has conceded 30 goals — the highest number in the league’s top 10.

“We reacted well after their two goals but then why was there four minutes added in? We had to get the ball in the corner and see it out. Poor goals to concede.”

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti said it felt “like a win.”

“We competed against one of the best in the Premier League,” he said. “We are not at the same level but we can fight and compete with our qualities. I am proud of my team.”

Man United could have defeated Sheffield more easily – Solskjaer

Manchester United Coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said their comeback win against Sheffield United could have come more easily.

The Norwegian manager said this in his post-match interview stating that his players were a bit sloppy as they could have scored more.

“It could have been more comfortable a couple reasons for that. We were a bit sloppy, we could have scored, we created some good chances.

United had a night to remember at Bramall lane as they cruised easily from behind to beat Sheffield who sit bottom on the EPL table.

Rashford, Bruno Fernandez, Pogba and Mason Greenwood all produced a spectacular performance to seal United’s win.

The Red Devils have also climbed up the EPL table and now sit number six on the log with a game at hand.

They face Leeds United in their next game on Sunday at Old Trafford.

  • Man United crashes out of Champions League

Man United crashes out of Champions League

Manchester United were dumped out of the Champions League after losing 3-2 to RB Leipzig on a disappointing night for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United, who knew they only needed a point to qualify from Group H, fell 3-0 behind in Germany after a shambolic defensive showing with on-loan Manchester City full-back Angelino (2), Amadou Haidara (13), and Justin Kluivert (69) putting the hosts firmly in control.

However, a Bruno Fernandes penalty with 10 minutes remaining sparked United into life, and Paul Pogba, played a big part to get United back to 3-2 as his header deflected off Harry Maguire (82) and into the net.

  • Man United suffer double injury blow against West Ham

Man United suffer double injury blow against West Ham

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said both Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial were substituted during Saturday’s 3-1 win over West Ham United because of muscle injuries.

Uruguayan striker Cavani, who scored twice as a substitute against Southampton last weekend, was operating as the central striker against West Ham, but did not come out for the second half at London Stadium.

French forward Martial was forced off the pitch after 62 minutes and was replaced by Juan Mata.

Solskjaer confirmed both strikers will undergo scans ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League encounter with RB Leipzig, with United needing a draw to qualify for the last-16.

“It is unfortunate… sometimes you get muscle injuries. We lost Anthony and Edinson,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “There’s a game already on Tuesday. But It’ll probably be (like this) this season.

“Some games we have to do without players and I’m glad we’ve got the substitutions we have.”

After Tomas Soucek put West Ham ahead, goals from Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and substitute Marcus Rashford helped United clinch a fifth consecutive away victory in the league this season.
