Man United defeat LASK, qualify for Europa quarter-finals

Manchester United edged LASK 2-1 on Wednesday in rescheduled ties due to the coronavirus pandemic to clinch places in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

United had a 5-0 lead from their first leg played in March and will face Copenhagen who enjoyed a 3-0 victory on the night over Istanbul Basaksehir.

Despite United’s comfortable lead from March 12’s first leg the visitors caused problems early on.

Andres Andrade hit the crossbar with a powerful header after 10 minutes at an almost empty Old Trafford before Peter Michorl fired wide just after the quarter of an hour mark.

The Linz-based outfit had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock as defender Philipp Wiesinger rifled into the top corner from outside the box after 55 minutes.

Their celebrations were shortlived as Jesse Lingard equalised on the counter attack for United three minutes later.

Anthony Martial claimed the match-winner with two minutes to go despite LASK goalkpeer Alexander Schlager getting a foot to the France striker’s shot.

Elsewhere, 2009 champions Shakhtar Donetsk booked a last-eight spot against Basel or Eintracht Frankfurt after three goals within the closing four minutes clinched a 3-0 win over Wolfsburg.

On Thursday Rangers head to Leverkusen, Wolves host Olympiakos, and Sevilla face Roma in Duisburg.

  • Rashford rescues Manchester United again

Substitute Marcus Rashford scored in stoppage time on Saturday for Manchester United to come from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 away.

The win helped Manchester United close the gap on the top four in an exciting English Premier League clash.

Callum Wilson had fired Bournemouth ahead in the 11th minute, but they were later kept on the back foot.

An in-form Anthony Martial netted his fifth goal in the last four games in the 35th minute, while Rashford completed the comeback from close range late on.

Poor Manchester United defending had seen Bournemouth miss three gilt-edged scoring chances before Wilson delighted the home fans with a simple tap-in.

This had followed an inch-perfect low cross from the right by Junior Stanislas, after some excellent build-up play.

Martial levelled when he drilled in a powerful left-foot shot from 11 metres, after good work by Ashley Young and Alexis Sanchez.

The goal meant the Frenchman has scored in four successive top-flight games for the first time in his career.

With Manchester United’s Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku left out of the matchday squad, other forwards needed to justify their paycheck.

Martial stepped up to torment his markers in the second half as Manchester United piled on the pressure.

This was after Ander Herrera and Rashford came on for Juan Mata and Brazil midfielder Fred.

The visitors missed a string of chances after the break.

But just when it seemed Bournemouth would hang on, Rashford popped up in the six-yard box to chest down Paul Pogba’s cross and tuck the ball past goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

  • Mourinho outlines Man Utd transfer plans as he targets ‘two or three’ Players

Jose Mourinho has hinted that Manchester United will attempt to sign two midfield players in the summer, as they look to replace Michael Carrick.

Carrick, 36, has played just once this season, after being struck down by a heart scare following United’s 4-1 win over Burton Albion in the EFL Cup.

Mourinho believes Carrick is a “phenomenal player”, but has outlined his intentions to potentially refresh his midfield with two new additions – one to replace the former England international, and one to further bolster his squad.

“I think, next season, we are going to get two or three more players,” Mourinho told United’s official website. “We are going to lose also two or three. If you can try to anticipate, you can more or less see that it’s normal that this is going to happen. It’s not going to happen – a dramatic change and a dramatic improvement – but in time, step by step, with some balance, we have to do it.

“If, next summer, we are going to sign a midfield player, it’s to replace Michael Carrick and Michael is a phenomenal player that, this season, he couldn’t give us anything at all.

“He’s in the end of his career so if, next summer, we buy a midfield player, it’s not to improve our squad – it’s to replace Michael Carrick. So, to improve our squad in the midfield, we would need to buy two.”

United spent over £140 million in the summer to sign the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof, but Mourinho insists that he has yet to truly strengthen, merely replacing those who were unable to contribute.

“I have the backing of the club and the first backing of the club I had was a three-year contract where everybody knows the job was not easy,” he added. “And we all know that we invest a lot, so when you invest as much as we did, it wouldn’t be very fair for me to say the club didn’t support, the club didn’t want to help. It would be very unfair, which is not me.

“The club invested a lot of money. The problem is not the money we invest, the problem is the money the others invest and it is the problem that others with better squads, with better stability, with more options, they keep investing and that’s the only problem because, for example, we bought a striker in the summer – a very good striker [Romelu Lukaku] – but that good striker was to replace Zlatan [Ibrahimovic].

“It was not to be him and Zlatan in the best of their form from day one. We signed [Victor] Lindelof. We didn’t have Marcos Rojo [at the start of the season]. We had problems, so when we are signing players in the last two years, it’s to replace people.”

  • Man United Manager, Jose Mourinho says £300m spend not enough

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says the £300m he has spent on his squad so far is “not enough” after their 2-2 draw with Burnley on Tuesday.

Jesse Lingard scored an injury-time equaliser and the draw leaves United 12 points behind leaders Manchester City.

“We are in the second year of trying to rebuild a football team that you know is not one of the best teams in the world,” said the Portuguese.

“Manchester City buy full-backs for the price of strikers,” he added.

Mourinho was appointed United boss in May 2016 and broke the world record last summer to sign £89m midfielder Paul Pogba, plus £30m defender Eric Bailly and midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan for £26.3m.

This year’s big deal was £75m striker Romelu Lukaku, as well as £31m defender Victor Lindelof and £40m for midfielder Nemanja Matic.

“[Spending £300m] is not enough. The price for the big clubs is different than for the other clubs. The big historical clubs are normally punished in the market because of that history,” he said.

“The boys are doing what they can and they are doing fine.”

Mourinho was asked if eight points from the past five games was good enough for a club like United.

He responded: “When you tell a club like Man Utd, do you think Milan is not as big as us? You think Real Madrid are not as big as we are?

“I know what a big club is. One thing is a big club and another thing is a big football team. They are two different things.

“When you speak about responsibilities to win the Premier League, Tottenham doesn’t have that responsibility because they are not a club with the same history as us.

“Arsenal don’t have the responsibility to win it. Chelsea don’t have the responsibility to win it. When you speak about big football clubs, you are speaking about the history of the club.”
