Football legend, Sir Bobby Charlton is dead

Sir Bobby Charlton, the Manchester United legend who was a key figure in England’s 1966 World Cup victory, has died at the age of 86.

Charlton won 106 caps for England and scored 49 international goals – records for his country at the time.

During a 17-year first-team career with United he won three league titles, a European Cup and an FA Cup.

Charlton’s family said he “passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning”.

In November 2020, it was announced Charlton had been diagnosed with dementia.

He died surrounded by his family, who said in a statement they wished to “pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him”.

“We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time,” their statement added.

United paid a fond tribute to Charlton, describing him as “one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club”.

“Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world,” the club said.

“He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game.

“His unparalleled record of achievement, character and service will be forever etched in the history of Manchester United and English football and his legacy will live on through the life-changing work of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.

“The club’s heartfelt sympathies are with his wife Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren, and all who loved him.”

His death leaves Sir Geoff Hurst – the striker who scored a hat-trick in England’s 4-2 win over West Germany in the 1966 final – as the sole surviving member of the triumphant team.

Hurst posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Very sad news today. One of the true Greats Sir Bobby Charlton has passed away. We will never forget him and nor will all of football. A great colleague and friend, he will be sorely missed by all of the country beyond sport alone. Condolences to his family and friends.”

Charlton’s older brother Jack, who died in July 2020, and their fellow World Cup winner Nobby Stiles, who passed away in October 2020, had also both been diagnosed with dementia.

  • We know Onana not good enough – Ten Hag

We know Onana not good enough – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he’s aware Andre Onana has not met expectations so far this season.

However, Ten Hag will continue to back his new goalkeeper.

He said: “He knows [he’s not been good enough], we know, he will do much better. As with every player who’s coming into the Premier League, you need an integration period but he has to step up. Big United keepers like Peter Schmeichel and David De Gea started [slowly] and Andre knows that it is good to know a little bit from history.

“We live now, we live in the future and he has to make his future by giving better performances. I’m sure he will do. He showed it at Barcelona, Ajax, Inter Milan, he was in the semi-final and the final of the Champions League, I’m sure he will give a great performance.”

On facing Sheffield United tomorrow night, Ten Hag also stated: “You can’t restart, but there is a strong dressing room. They are aligned, determined and willing to win games. That is what we have seen. In the end, we beat them and physically we were very strong, mentally, we kept going and were very strong.”

Man Utd manager Ten Hag considers Onana axe

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is considering dropping Andre Onana.

The Cameroon international is struggling for form and has battled to adapt since his summer arrival from Inter Milan.

ESPN says Ten Hag is now considering withdrawing Onana from the frontline amid concerns over his confidence.

United signed Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir in a £4.3m deadline day deal.

And there is now an internal push for Bayindir to be given his chance with Onana wobbling as he is.

I was excited to watch Man Utd lose – Scholes

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was excited to watch the Red Devils defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday.

He compared Rasmus Hojlund to former teammate Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Scholes knows all about top center forwards who score goals for the Premier League club.

As Hojlund scored twice, Scholes lavished praise on the young Dane.

“You’re normally really disappointed,” Scholes stated on United losing.

But he added: “I think I saw enough tonight in a team that excited me. Hojlund, especially them two goals.

“He took the two goals brilliantly. I absolutely loved the second goal, he gave the center-half no chance, clean pair of heels and his finish – a composed finish. We also had a goal that got disallowed.

“And I thought, ‘Wow there’s a bit of Van Nistelrooy in there.’”

  • Man Utd too big for Ten Hag to handle – Ibrahimovic

Man Utd too big for Ten Hag to handle – Ibrahimovic

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag doesn’t have the experience to handle dressing room egos.

That is what has got former United star Zlatan Ibrahimvoic worried with respect to the club’s trajectory.

Ten Hag, who won the Carabao Cup last season and finished third in the Premier League, is struggling to find a winning formula this term.

Ibra stated, per The Sun: “Coming from Ajax to United as he did is a big difference — I have been in both clubs.

“You have a different kind of discipline.

“Ajax is a talented club. They have the best talents in the club. They don’t have big stars.

“What is the experience of this coach? Young talents, he comes to United, it is a different mentality.

“The players there are supposed to be big stars.

“I don’t think you give the same treatment.

“How much time do you give a coach? It depends on the owners, what they want, but if you listen to the fans, you don’t have a lot of time because they want to win, and I understand them because they are used to winning and they want to still win.”

  • Crystal Palace claim impressive win at Old Trafford

Crystal Palace claim impressive win at Old Trafford

Manchester United suffered a second successive defeat at home in the Premier League as Joachim Andersen’s superb strike gave Crystal Palace an impressive victory at Old Trafford.

The two teams were meeting for the second time in five days, with Erik ten Hag’s side comfortably winning 3-0 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

But Palace rested a number of first-team players for that game and were a different proposition on Saturday as they produced the perfect away performance.

After Tyrick Mitchell cleared Rasmus Hojlund’s effort off the line, Palace took the lead when Andersen superbly drove a first-time effort into the top corner after a free-kick.

Manchester United piled on the pressure after that, but struggled to find a way through the Palace defence. When they did they found goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in superb form.

Johnstone made two crucial saves in the second half to preserve Palace’s lead, first pushing over Bruno Fernandes’ dipping effort before keeping out Hojlund’s bullet header.

The Palace goal continued to live a charmed life but Manchester United could not find a way through as the visitors secured a win that moved them above their opponents to ninth, with the hosts dropping to 10th.

It is now four defeats in seven Premier League games for Ten Hag’s side, who have had their worst start to a league season after seven games in 34 years.

  • Manchester United suffer Martinez injury blow

Manchester United suffer Martinez injury blow

Manchester United have announced Lisandro Martinez will be sidelined for an “extended period” after aggravating the foot injury he suffered towards the end of last season.

The Argentina defender sustained a fractured metatarsal in April’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Sevilla, keeping him out for around two months.

Martinez is now looking at a similar timescale after United confirmed he had suffered a setback.

The club said: “Lisandro Martinez will be out of action for an extended period due to an aggravation of the foot injury he suffered in April.

“The Argentinian defender experienced the setback in our Premier League game against Arsenal earlier this month.

“Martinez bravely continued playing for the following two games against Brighton and Bayern Munich.

“But it has now been determined that he needs a period on the sidelines for recovery and rehabilitation. Assessment is ongoing to decide next steps.”

United have a number of injury issues to deal with and have confirmed Sergio Reguilon will be among those absent against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The club said: “Sergio Reguilon will also be absent from this Saturday’s Premier League game against Crystal Palace with a minor injury.”

  • What Man Utd can expect from Onana – Daley Blind

What Man Utd can expect from Onana – Daley Blind

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has received significant praise this week.

The Cameroonian, who has experienced a tough start to life at the club, is “one of the great goalkeepers in the world.”

That is the view of former United and Ajax defender Daley Blind, who gave a wide ranging interview to The Athletic recently.

Blind explained of the goalkeeper: “He’s one of the great goalkeepers in the world.

“He has a nonchalance, he’s complete and when he has his head right he can be one of the best goalkeepers.

“He’s a winner. Always wants to train more. I had a good relationship with him.”

  • REVEALED: Rashford and Pogba rejected Man Utd captaincy

REVEALED: Rashford and Pogba rejected Man Utd captaincy

Marcus Rashford refused to take the Manchester United captaincy under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it has been revealed.

Solskjaer admitted last week that two players had rejected the captaincy when offered, though refused to name them.

He told the Athletic: “Some weren’t as good as their own perception of themselves.

“I won’t name names but I was very disappointed when a couple turned down the chance to be captain.

“I was also disappointed when others said they wouldn’t play or train because they wanted to force their way out.”

And now a source tells The Sun: “Paul Pogba was offered it but said he wanted to leave the club so turned it down.

“Rashford was also asked to take the captaincy but he said he didn’t think he was ready for it.”

  • De Gea also had difficult start – Evans defends Onana

De Gea also had difficult start – Evans defends Onana

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has urged teammate Andre Onana not to be “too harsh on himself”.

Onana is being questioned after a shaky start to his United career, which included a major error in defeat at Champions League opponents Bayern Munich. Onana later blamed himself for the 4-3 loss.

“It’s a big thing for him to do that,” said Evans to TNT Sports. “He didn’t have to do that. But I think it’s very difficult for any player coming to a new club to hit the ground running and maybe he’s been a bit harsh on himself.

“I’ve seen that quite a lot. And I’ve experienced that myself.

“He’s replacing David de Gea, who was here for a long time. Again, remember, David at the start of his career at Manchester United, maybe went through a bit of a tough time to settle in and we saw what sort of career he would go on to have for this club.”
