Ten Hag doesn’t believe in Maguire – Stam

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam says manager Erik Ten Hag does not always believe in Harry Maguire.

Stam feels Maguire should leave Old Trafford this summer and needs to play regularly.

He told the Full Circle podcast, “If I was Maguire, looking at him and how it’s working out for him, or how it’s going this season, I would have said [he should leave], and I think that’s best for him as well because he needs to play.

“You’re at a certain age that you want to play, you need to play football. It seems like Ten Hag doesn’t always believe in Maguire.

“I think the best thing to do is to go somewhere where you can play week in, week out.”

What I thought about Bournemouth – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was impressed by Bournemouth on Saturday.

United won 1-0 at Dean Court.

Ten Hag said: “When you are already safe [from relegation] two games before the end of the season, then you have done a really good job because the Premier League is really tough, it’s really strong.

“All the teams are very strong. So if you save yourself two games from the end, I think it’s a big reward.

“Big credit to the manager, his coaching staff and the team.”

  • Man Utd, De Gea hit contract deadlock

Man Utd, De Gea hit contract deadlock

Manchester United are currently in negotiations with goalkeeper David de Gea about his future.

The Spaniard, who was tipped to leave United for Real Madrid for so many summers during his peak, ended up committing his best years to United.

Now that his deal is expiring in the summer, Untied and De Gea are arguing over a new contract.

Per the Manchester Evening News, United want De Gea to accept a lower wage and status as possible no.2 from next season.

The club are ready to renew him, but only on reduced terms that suit their plans.

The Spaniard wants to maintain a wage close to the £375,000 a week he earns, but he is the best paid keeper on the planet by some distance at present.

Napoli defender agrees terms with Man Utd

Napoli defender Kim Min-jae has agreed to join Manchester United, it has been claimed.

Il Mattino reports United have struck personal terms with the South Korea international and will trigger his buyout clause of €60m when it comes into effect in the first two weeks of July.

Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis stated on Sunday that he did expect to lose some “senators” this summer.

Kim only moved to Napoli last summer from Fenerbahce, but has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford. His switch from Fener cost Napoli €18m.

This season, Kim has played 43 times in all competitions, scoring two goals in a team that has kept 15 league clean sheets.

  • ‘Old Trafford is neglected’ – Solskjaer speaks on possible return

‘Old Trafford is neglected’ – Solskjaer speaks on possible return

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opened the door to returning to Manchester United “in some capacity”.

Solskjaer was sacked as manager in November 2021.

He told the Athletic: “It has to be something special, a new culture, or a club that really excites me.

“Or maybe they will want me back at the Man Utd in some capacity, who knows?”

Solskjaer also stated the Glazer family needs to sell the club.

“It’s got to be done. Old Trafford is neglected. The training centre has been neglected. We have to catch up with the other teams.”

  • Man Utd beat Wolves to strengthen top-four spot

Man Utd beat Wolves to strengthen top-four spot

Manchester United bounced back from consecutive Premier League defeats by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford to strengthen their bid for a top-four finish.

Erik ten Hag’s side had lost to Brighton and West Ham to give Liverpool – who were one point behind in fourth at the start of the day – hope of snatching a Champions League spot at their expense.

But Anthony Martial opened the scoring in the first half before Alejandro Garnacho added a second in stoppage time to secure a win that moved Manchester United four points clear of the Reds with three games remaining.

With Marcus Rashford out through injury, it looked like being a difficult day in front of goal for the hosts as they missed a number of decent chances, particularly through Antony.

The winger curled an effort just wide after racing into space before sending a header over from close range when unmarked.

But Antony provided the assist for the first-half breakthrough when he was played in by Bruno Fernandes and he unselfishly squared to Martial for the tap-in.

Antony had another opportunity to get on the scoresheet in the second half but he drove a shot just wide of the post after being set up by a Fernandes backheel.

However, substitute Garnacho finally got Manchester United’s second when he raced through in the fifth minute of stoppage time before firing past Dan Bentley in the Wolves goal.

The visitors rarely threatened as they finished the game without a shot on target.

Manchester United remain fourth but are level on 66 points with Newcastle in third. Wolves, meanwhile, are 13th.

  • Carrick will be Man Utd manager if… – Solskjaer

Carrick will be Man Utd manager if… – Solskjaer

Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can see Michael Carrick eventually returning to Old Trafford.

Carrick has thrived as Middlesbrough manager this season in his first major management post.

Solskjaer told the Athletic of his former United No2: “Michael is a man of values and principles, a great family man, but his knowledge is also unsurpassed. He has had Sir Alex Ferguson and José Mourinho as coaches, and he has played with the best players in the world. He is a winner but he is still in control of his emotions.

“I can’t see him not becoming Manchester United coach. At United I sometimes saw Michael talking to the players. Some of these were former teammates of his, which is not easy, but he had an authority.

“I am 100 percent sure that Michael will become the manager of Manchester United if he wants to be.”

  • Brighton shock Man Utd with late penalty kick

Brighton shock Man Utd with late penalty kick

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Alexis MacAllister scored from the penalty kick spot deep into stoppage time to snatch a 1-0 win for his side over Manchester United on Thursday.

The defeat leaves Erik ten Hag’s side in fourth place on 63 points, four ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool but with a game in hand over their Merseyside rivals.

Brighton meanwhile move up to sixth on 55 points.

The victory was some measure of revenge for Brighton, who lost to Manchester United on penalty kicks in their 2022/2023 English FA Cup semi-final meeting 11 days ago.

The home side dominated possession and could have gone ahead as early as the fourth minute.

This was after Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma snapped up a loose pass from Victor Lindelof, but he fired his shot straight into the face of David De Gea.

Mitoma was a threat throughout, creating several chances for himself.

He teed up Danny Welbeck to fire high and wide from the edge of the penalty box early in the second half as Manchester United struggled to pass the ball out of defence.

After a first half booking, Manchester United midfielder Casemiro was lucky not to pick up another booking after hacking down MacAllister on the edge of the box in the second half.

Tempers flared in the 68th minute as Manchester United winger Antony, angry at not being awarded a free-kick, was penalised for a tackle on MacAllister.

He got into a confrontation with Lewis Dunk which earned both players a yellow card.

Brighton continued to press forward looking for a winner, with substitute Solly March and MacAllister both forcing superb saves from De Gea as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes.

Manchester United looked set to secure a draw, but there was late drama when defender Luke Shaw was found to have handled the ball in the penalty box.

This was after a VAR review, and MacAllister blasted home the penalty kick nine minutes into stoppage time to secure the win.

“Really happy and delighted for the performance and result,” Brighton coach Roberto de Zerbi told reporters.

“There is a God of football —- we deserved to win the (FA Cup) semi-final but lost on penalty kicks, but today we won with a penalty kick.”

Shaw took responsilibity for his mistake, calling it a “silly error that cost us a point”.

But he said his side were still on course to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

“Teams around us are picking up points, (but) we still have a game in hand and it is in our hands,” he told reporters.

  • Man Utd dumped out of Europa League

Man Utd dumped out of Europa League

Manchester United were dumped out of the Europa League quarter-finals following a dreadful second-leg performance in defeat to Sevilla.

United were well below their best – creating almost nothing going forward, overrun in midfield and making two terrible mistakes in defence – as they exited Europe with a whimper.

The Spanish side were gifted the lead after eight minutes when Youssef En-Nesyri finished following an awful error from Harry Maguire, and Sevilla doubled their advantage shortly after half time with a looping header from defender Loic Bade.

Sevilla’s win – and United’s humiliation – was complete nine minutes from time when En-Nesyri again capitalised on a shocking mistake, this time from goalkeeper David de Gea, to complete the win.

Having been 2-0 up and cruising in the first leg at Old Trafford, Erik Ten Hag’s side contrived to concede five times in the space of 90 minutes – two late own goals in Manchester and three times in Spain – to throw away their chance of European success.

This was the first of a series of potentially season-defining games for United – they take on Brighton at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday and face a key Premier League match at Tottenham on 27 April – and they completely failed this test.

Sevilla meanwhile will play Juventus in a two-legged semi-final on 11 and 18 May. The Italian side beat Sporting 2-1 on aggregate in their quarter-final.

  • Europa: Sevilla launch late fightback to draw with Man Utd

Europa: Sevilla launch late fightback to draw with Man Utd

Manchester United conceded two late own goals to allow Sevilla to snatch a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Marcel Sabitzer’s quickfire double in the first half put Erik ten Hag’s team in control of the tie, but Sevilla, record six-times Europa League champions, pulled one back in the 84th minute.

This was when Jesus Navas’s shot pinged off the feet of Tyrell Malacia and keeper David de Gea into the net.

Manchester United were reduced to 10 men when defender Lisandro Martinez was carried off injured and Youssef En-Nesyri’s stoppage-time header glanced off Harry Maguire into the goal to give Sevilla a huge lift ahead of next week’s second leg.

“I think we had the game in hand,” Ten Hag told reporters.

“We should have scored three or four. . . and then some unlucky moments with injuries. We then conceded two own goals and that’s bad luck.

“We have to deal with it. Of course, we have to learn that we have to kill the game.”

Sabitzer, who is on loan from Bayern Munich, netted his first European goal for United in the 14th minute, when he controlled a pinpoint pass from Bruno Fernandes and shot past keeper Bono.

The Austrian doubled his tally seven minutes later, latching on to a fine pass from Anthony Martial and finishing well.

Sabitzer, however, said it was tough to find words after his team’s late meltdown.

“A roller-coaster,” Sabitzer said. “We had to finish the game off, it’s a draw, was not what we wanted, have to go to Seville and get it down there.

“We had the chances, we were confident in the game and I think we controlled the game, but unfortunately we gave easy goals away.”

Martinez appeared to suffer a serious ankle injury and was carried off the pitch by two Sevilla players who are his Argentina team mates.

United, bidding for their second trophy of the season after winning the League Cup, thought they had scored seconds after kickoff, but Jadon Sancho’s effort was disallowed for offside.

Sevilla, languishing in the bottom half of La Liga, were outplayed in the first half but they nearly got on the scoreboard seconds before the interval.

This was when De Gea stopped Tianguy Ninazou’s close-range header and Raphael Varane cleared it off the line.
