Mitoma breaks Premier League Japanese record

Brighton attacker Kaoru Mitoma has become the most successful Japanese player in Premier League history.

With his strike in victory at Manchester United on Sunday, it marked Mitoma’s 15th goal in the Premier League.

As such, Mitoma is now the highest Japanese goalscorer in the English top-flight, surpassing the 14 goals struck by Leicester City’s Premier League title winner Shinji Okazaki.

Mitoma has also recorded 12 assists in the EPL, double the number of any Japanese player.

The 27 year-old’s current Brighton deal runs to 2027.

  • Ex-Man Utd manager explains taking Besiktas job

Ex-Man Utd manager explains taking Besiktas job

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained taking the Besiktas job.

Solskjaer has signed an 18 month deal with the Black Eagles.

At his presentation on Sunday, Solskjaer said: “I actually had other offers, but I had a good life in Norway. There had to be an offer that was worth giving up my life for. Istanbul is a fantastic city, I couldn’t say no to this offer. If I hadn’t accepted, I would have regretted it long before I died.

“The project here is similar to that of Manchester United. At United we also finished the season in sixth place, and then we grew step by step. We want to win, but we also want to be realistic. We have to stop the negative trend.”

Solskjaer also said: “I haven’t spoken to José Mourinho (Fenerbahce coach) yet. He is an extraordinary manager, a name that has achieved a lot of success. I can’t wait to meet him again and I have great respect for him.”

He continued: “We had excellent meetings with our president and we also found each other on a human level. The bonds that we will build in this team are very important. Here we will build a new base. This was something I really wanted. Our president touched my heart and that of the technical staff.

“While I worked at UEFA (as a Match Analyst.), I followed the games and Beşiktaş. I am proud to be in a club like this.

“I know what the fans want. We will work every day for this. I am here only to win. We have players who are used to winning. Beşiktaş is a team that deserves victories. I have always aimed for this both as a player and as a coach, and that is why I came here.”

  • EPL: We’re the worst team in Man Utd history – Amorim

EPL: We’re the worst team in Man Utd history – Amorim

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim would not sugar coat his words this weekend.

The Portuguese was outspoken in his thoughts on his team after they lost 3-1 at home to Brighton.

Amorim admitted his team were second best and deserved to lose, even labeling them one of the worst United teams in history.

He stated: “In 10 Premier League games, we’ve won two. I know that. If it’s (like) this for a fan of Manchester United, imagine what it’s like for me.

“You are getting a new coach that is losing more than the last coach, I have full knowledge of that. Like I said, I’m not going to change, no matter what, and I know we can succeed.

“But we need to survive this moment because I’m not naive and I know that we need to survive now. We are being the worst team, maybe, in the history of Manchester United, and I know that you want headlines but I’m saying that because we have to acknowledge that and change that.”

  • EPL: Onana error helps Brighton to win at Old Trafford

EPL: Onana error helps Brighton to win at Old Trafford

Brighton capitalised on a disastrous mistake from Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana to condemn their hosts to a fourth defeat in five Premier League home games and leave Ruben Amorim’s side rooted in the bottom half of the table.

The visitors were already leading thanks to goals from Yankuba Minteh and Kauro Mitoma when Onana came sliding out to collect a low Yasin Ayari cross.

It seemed an easy enough take but somehow Onana managed to grab the ball, then release it. Substitute Georginio Rutter could not believe his luck as he turned the ball into an empty net, with Onana left exasperated at his inexplicable failure.

It was hardly the way United’s players would have wanted to mark the death of legendary striker Denis Law, but they deserved nothing more.

With world darts champion and lifelong United fan Luke Littler watching on, Brighton struck after just five minutes as Mitoma scorched away before presenting Minteh with the inviting finish.

Then, after Bruno Fernandes had pulled United level with a 23rd-minute penalty, Minteh turned provider on the hour as he chipped a cross to the far post and Mitoma won a duel with Noussair Mazraoui to turn the ball into the net from less than a yard.

By that point, Brighton had already had a Joao Pedro effort ruled out by VAR because of a foul in the build-up on Diogo Dalot.

It was the Seagulls’ sixth win in seven meetings with United, while Manchester City are the only club to have emulated their achievement of winning three games on the trot at Old Trafford in the Premier League era.

While the result keeps Fabian Hurzeler’s team in touch with the contenders for European qualification, United’s three-game unbeaten run is at an end. They have now lost four of their last six league matches and are seven points adrift of 10th-placed Fulham and 10 ahead of the relegation places.

  • Amorim calls out four Man Utd players after victory

Amorim calls out four Man Utd players after victory

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was not afraid to lay into his players this week.

The Portuguese has called out four of his stars, despite their 3-1 win over Southampton.

United had to come from behind and leave it to the last 15 minutes of the game to seal the three points, thanks to three Amad Diallo goals.

Post-game, Amorim name-checked Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes and Leny Yoro, stating to TNT: “It’s not just tiredness but playing in this stadium we lost the last three games here.

“The pressure is different because we try to press the opponent in build up and you can feel the difficulties. Then Matheus (Fernandes) between the lines and (Tyler) Dibling between the lines created a lot of problems and we had difficulty to press high in the moment.

“This team is not used to doing that. Then it seems like lack of enthusiasm. So Ugarte is late, Kobbie Mainoo is late, Bruno going outside, the ball is inside. Then one transition and Leny Yoro cannot catch the guy. These small things push the team behind and then we get nervous without the ball.

“Then when you have one click, one goal, one opportunity – you feel the team can control the game. I want to be fair with my team. Today was not a lack of enthusiasm, it was a lack of speed and sometimes lack of control of the game.”

  • After Nothingham’s defeat, Man Utd confirms resignation of Sporting Director

After Nothingham’s defeat, Man Utd confirms resignation of Sporting Director

Manchester United confirmed the shock departure of sporting director Dan Ashworth on Sunday, just five months after he took up the role at Old Trafford.

Ashworth’s exit was reportedly agreed after Saturday’s disappointing 3-2 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

His appointment was seen as a major coup among sweeping changes to the Red Devils’ sporting structure made since Jim Ratcliffe bought a minority share in the English giants in December 2023.

Ashworth, 53, officially joined the club on July 1 after spending five months on gardening leave at Newcastle as Manchester United pursued their interest.

However, the Athletic reported tensions had emerged between Ashworth and Ratcliffe over the return on the field from a near £200 million ($255 million) spending spree in the summer transfer window.

None of the new signings — Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee — have hit the ground running.

United sit 13th in the Premier League and sacked Erik ten Hag in October, just four months after extending the Dutchman’s contract.

New boss Ruben Amorim has not had an immediate impact with just one win from his first four Premier League matches.

“Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as sporting director of Manchester United by mutual agreement,” United said in a statement.

We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.”

Ashworth was previously credited for implementing a structure at the Football Association that helped turn around the fortunes of the England national team.

He was then part of Brighton’s development into an established Premier League club before joining Newcastle in 2022.

After extensive negotiations United reportedly paid compensation of £3 million to bring Ashworth to Old Trafford.

He joined a revamped leadership group with Jason Wilcox joining as technical director and Omar Berrada installed as chief executive.

Ashworth’s departure comes as the latest major embarrassment to Ratcliffe’s overhaul of a club that has fallen on hard times over the past decade.

The British billionaire, who made his fortune as founder of petrochemicals giant INEOS, said the club had become “mediocre” in a fanzine interview this week and that “difficult and unpopular decisions” needed to be made.

Ratcliffe has also alienated fans after a controversial decision to raise ticket prices to £66 per match without concessions for children or pensioners.

  • Transfer: Real Madrid consider re-sigining Man Utd star

Transfer: Real Madrid consider re-sigining Man Utd star

La Liga club Real Madrid are exploring re-signing Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

Trivela says Real are considering a move for the Brazilian veteran in January.

Real management recognise the retirement of Toni Kroos has left a massive void, which has led to discussions about bringing Casemiro back to the club.

It’s believed Casemiro would have a big impact on the pitch and in the dressing room at Real, which are struggling for consistency this season.

The 32 year-old left Real for United in 2022 and has a deal to 2026.

  • Man Utd boss Amorim facing Zirkzee dilemma

Man Utd boss Amorim facing Zirkzee dilemma

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has a huge decision to make regarding a summer signing.

The Red Devils brought in £40 million forward Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna to provide competition to Rasmus Hojlund.

However, the Dutchman has struggled to find any form since arriving at United, scoring just once.

Per The Mirror, Amorim will now be asked to run the rule over Zirkzee before the January window.

There is a chance he may even be sent out on loan if he does not fit the new manager’s plans.

But United will hope that Zirzkee will be able to find his feet in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

Transfer: Galatasaray coach reacts to Man Utd talk for Osimhen

Galatasaray coach Buruk Okan expects Victor Osimhen to see out the season.

Osimhen is on-loan at Gala from Napoli, which have been approached by Manchester United in recent days for the Nigeria striker.

But Okan says: “Osimhen intends to stay here until the end of the season.

“He also wants to stay and has been telling me the same thing since the beginning. There is a clause, but it doesn’t matter, he said he will stay.

“The important thing is the player, it is the player who decides and Osimhen says he will stay here. He said the same thing when he came.”

  • Van Nistelrooy makes clear Man Utd future plans

Van Nistelrooy makes clear Man Utd future plans

Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has confirmed his interest in staying at the club.

Van Nistelrooy was assistant to Erik ten Hag, but the latter lost his job early in the week.

After managing a 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, Van Nistelrooy stated he would love to stick around under incoming boss Ruben Amorim.

Asked on Sky Sports if he was open to staying, Van Nistelrooy replied: “Of course. I came here as an assistant to help the club.

“Now in this role, I’m helping as long as needed. In the future in any capacity, I’m here to help the club further to build towards the future that’s what I’m here for.”

“I’m here to help and serve and give my everything for the club in any capacity with so many people here around me that want the best for the club and that will never change.”
