EPL: Why I chose West Ham – Lingard

West Ham loanee Jesse Lingard admits he could have left Manchester United for abroad in January.

In just seven appearances for his new club, Lingard has scored five goals, assisted three more and won two penalties, helping to maintain the Hammers’ unexpected push for Champions League football.

He revealed he had offers to join clubs in France and Spain during the transfer window but was advised to remain in the Premier League by England boss Gareth Southgate.

“It was about going out to Europe or staying in the Premier League and he said, ‘If I was you I would stay in the Premier League’,” Lingard told the London Evening Standard.

“So after that I had to find a Premier League side and obviously West Ham fit perfectly.

“I didn’t speak to him after the loan, it was just about me working hard for West Ham and trying to get the call-up.”

However, Sosa insists Cavani is attracted to the prospect of winding down his career with Nacional of Uruguay.

He told Polideportivo: “I spoke with Cavani and I know how excited he is to come to Nacional.”

Cavani comes off contract at the end of the season.

What Bailly told friends about his new Man Utd contract offer

Eric Bailly believes Manchester United only want to secure him to a new contract in order to sell him.

Over the weekend he told friends he believes he will never be a first choice defender for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – and that the club only want him to sign a contract extension to make him more valuable in this summer’s transfer market.

A friend of the defender’s has told Sky Sports News:” Eric loves the club and the fans, his family are settled in Manchester and he’d like nothing more than to spend the rest of his career at Old Trafford.

“But he feels the club has been very disrespectful towards him and frankly he’s had enough.

“He feels that no matter what he does, he will never be first choice for Ole.

“He now realises he’s too good and too young to spend his time sitting on the bench.”

Pogba have already decided his future at Man Utd – Shearer

Alan Shearer believes a decision has already been made on Paul Pogba’s future with Manchester United.

The Frenchman is out of contract in the summer of 2022.

Pogba made his first start since early February in the loss to Leicester City on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the match, Shearer said: “We’ve said it so many times that the ability is there but we probably haven’t seen it enough.

“We know what he can do, he did it in the week when he came on and scored and has been injured for the last six or seven weeks.

“So, it depends what he wants, but I expect the decision has been made already on whether he’s staying or going.”

  • ‘Van de Beek looks lost at Man Utd’

‘Van de Beek looks lost at Man Utd’

Donny van de Beek looks “lost” at Manchester United, according to Mark Hughes, who says a £40 million ($55m) flop is edging closer to the Old Trafford exit with each passing game.

United forked out big money to bring in Van de Beek from Ajax last summer, but he has so far failed to live up to his reputation as one of the most promising young midfielders in Europe.

The Dutchman blew his latest chance to make an impact as the Red Devils crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Leicester City, and Hughes thinks he is running out of time to save his career in Manchester.

“Clearly it’s difficult, he hasn’t had enough game time and you can see that in his play,” The ex-United star told Stadium Astro.

“He’s wandering and not really getting on the ball, doesn’t know how to affect the game, can’t demand the ball of his team-mates because they’re not quite sure whether or not they have enough confidence in him.

“He looks like a guy who’s wandering around lost on the field. Okay, some of that responsibility he has to take on himself, he has to be more demonstrative, he has to be a key player.

“He’s a big-money signing he’s come from a big club in Ajax so he’s used to being a top player of influence.

“But clearly, since he’s come to United he hasn’t shown anything like what the level he needs to be at to remain a Man United player.

“He can only have so many opportunities, at some point he’s going to have to take them or United will move him on. I think they’re edging towards that decision if he’s not careful.”

  • Solskjaer defends Bruno Fernandes decision

    Solskjaer defends Bruno Fernandes decision

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stands by his decision to rest Bruno Fernandes.

The Red Devils midfielder did not start in their FA Cup quarter final defeat to Leicester City on Sunday.

United could have booked a place in the semi finals, where they would have played Southampton.

Instead, they were second best throughout the contest at Leicester, and eventually lost 3-1.

Asked about Fernandes only coming off the bench in the second half, Solskjaer told reporters: “Every team selection has reasons behind it. Bruno has played very, very much football. He broke all his records on Thursday night [at the San Siro] physically statistically, and the boy is not inhuman.

“He’s also a human being, he’s played a game every three or four days really. It was a chance to start to both Donny [van de Beek] and Paul [Pogba].

“The accumulation of games maybe caught up with us.

“I know Bruno wants to play but sometimes you make decisions for the benefit of both the team and him.”

Leicester City ace Kelechi Iheanacho was full of pride after their FA Cup triumph over Manchester United.

Kelechi scored twice for the shock quarterfinal win.

He later said, “I can’t express the feeling – I feel great and the whole team are happy.

“We were waiting for this time and we’re into the FA Cup semi-final for the first time [in almost 40 years] so we’re happy.

“We focus on the next game and hopefully we can get to the final.”

  • Man Utd fullback: I need to experience full Old Trafford

Man Utd fullback: I need to experience full Old Trafford

Manchester United fullback Alex Telles says he wants to stay with the Red Devils in order to experience a full Old Trafford.

Telles was recently linked with a move to Inter Milan, with reports claiming the Brazil international could be used in a swap deal that would see Marcelo Brozovic head in the opposite direction.

But he told the club’s website: “So it has been really strange playing in empty stadiums and, honestly, it’s not easy.

“Obviously, a stadium full of our supporters gives you additional motivation. You’re filled with motivation when you go onto the pitch to warm up and you hear the noise of the entire stadium.

“We really miss it, we can’t wait for the stadiums to fill up again.

“It’s also good when we play away, it’s good to hear the boos and whistles as this also motivates you in a different way.

“We know that it’s part of the footballing spectacle and we hope that they’ll be back soon. I think the only thing that football is lacking right now is the fans.

“It’s everything about the noise: it’s when you score a goal or even when you don’t score but come close, and there’s that ‘almost’ sensation in the air. When you’re tired, the shouting fans drive you on and give you additional motivation. You play for yourself and the team but you also play for the fans.

“Sadly I haven’t had the chance to play in front of United fans yet, but I’ve only heard great things and I’ve looked through supporters’ videos on YouTube.

“Sometimes, when I see the videos on social media from games in a full Old Trafford it really motivates me.

“It moves me to want to play in front of a full Old Trafford crowd. I can’t wait for this to happen but we know that for this to happen people need to be conscientious today so we can be together again further down the line.

“Then, when we are finally all together, we will focus on winning together.”

  • Solskjaer making us all happy – Man Utd director

Solskjaer making us all happy – Man Utd director

Manchester United director Richard Arnold has heaped praise on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer has United well placed to ensure qualification for Champions League football next season, and while he has overseen frustratingly inconsistent spells of form, the Norwegian retains the full support of the club’s hierarchy.

“Ole is the ultimate exemplar of … someone in Manchester United who has tremendous character, is incredibly well connected with the culture and history of the club,” Arnold said.

“No one in the world is happier than me with the phenomenal success he is bringing.

“When you’re inside (the club) and you are seeing the work of the man and the character, it just makes you so happy. He deserves to succeed, and he is, and that makes me very happy.”

  • Paul Scholes suggests ideal role for Pogba at Man Utd

Paul Scholes suggests ideal role for Pogba at Man Utd

Manchester United great Paul Scholes says Paul Pogba is worthy of a starting place in Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s XI.

United secured a spot in the Europa League quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over AC Milan in the second leg of their last 16 tie on Thursday.

Pogba scored the only goal of the game to hand United a 2-1 win on aggregate, with the midfielder coming off the bench to make his first appearance since suffering a muscle injury on February 6.

Speaking on BT Sport, Scholes was asked if Pogba gets in United’s best XI when he is fit and replied: “Yes, of course he does, whether it’s in that left-side position tonight where he came in and did brilliantly well.

“I think that position takes a little bit of defensive responsibility off him. It depends who is fit, I do like Rashford or Martial on that left hand side I must admit But he’s got every bit as much quality as them, probably more quality than them.

“He obviously hasn’t got as much pace. I think with those two holding midfielder players, it gives them that license just to be a bit freer as well from that position. There’s no doubting the quality he has.

“As long as he doesn’t have to think about having to defend, which he does get caught a little bit in that position, I think it could be a good position for him.

“When he played for Juventus, that was his best position, either out on the left-hand side or on the right-hand side and we all know the football he produced in that team.”
