Erik Ten Hag to remain Man Utd manager after board review

Erik Ten Hag will remain as manager of Manchester United following a post-season review by the club’s board.

It is understood they are now talking to Ten Hag about extending his contract, which is about to enter its final season.

United instigated their review immediately after the FA Cup final.

Ten Hag went into the game against Manchester City at Wembley amid a backdrop of reports claiming he was going to be sacked no matter the outcome.

Instead, United’s deserved 2-1 victory allowed the club hierarchy to approach the review in a more positive light.

It is understood what are being described as “constructive conversations” with Ten Hag have taken place around the outcome of the review.

All eventualities were considered and the clear preference was for the 54-year-old Dutchman to remain in charge.

Ten Hag is known to be delighted at the outcome on Tuesday, although there have been suggestions he was getting irritated at the time taken for United to reach their conclusion.

United do not believe two weeks is an unreasonable length of time to conduct a thorough assessment of what is the first season under a change of ownership.

Thomas Tuchel is thought to have spoken to new United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe last week but ruled himself out of the running, while the club’s interest in Mauricio Pochettino also cooled even though he was available after his exit from Chelsea.

Graham Potter, Thomas Frank, Roberto de Zerbi and current England boss Gareth Southgate were also linked with the job, although Brentford were never contacted about Frank and appointing Southgate this summer was impossible due to his commitments with England.

Ten Hag has been on holiday with his family in Ibiza.

United finished eighth last season, their lowest position in the Premier League era, although they suffered the most injuries with 45 separate cases recorded, a fact Ten Hag often cited for some below-par displays.

The Dutchman took charge at Old Trafford in summer 2022 and is United’s fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, following David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He arrived at Old Trafford following a successful four-and-a-half year spell at Ajax that saw him win three Eredivisie titles and two Dutch Cups.

In his debut season he led the club to third place in the Premier League, along with the EFL Cup and FA Cup finals.

He won his first trophy as United boss in February 2023 when the Red Devils beat Newcastle to lift the EFL Cup, but were beaten by Manchester City in the FA Cup final three months later.

The 2023-24 season proved more difficult, including an early exit from the Champions League after finishing bottom of their group.

United started poorly with six defeats in their opening 10 games, including to Galatasaray and Bayern Munich in the Champions League. They also finished weakly – despite the FA Cup final triumph, they only won five of their final 12 matches in all competitions.

“It was the season Juve appointed (Maurizio) Sarri, so I spoke to him to find out if he really didn’t want me on the team. After our chat, my intention was to stay.

“I didn’t want to leave. I wanted to stay because I was happy (in Turin). That was my best year.”

FA Cup: We were the better team – Guardiola

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was snappy after their FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United.

The favourites were beaten 2-1 on the day.

Guardiola later said: “Congratulations to them on a fantastic season.”

“We lost the game. Congratulations to United. It was a tight game.

“It can happen. Many things. At the end they scored two goals and we couldn’t score more.”

Asked if he thought United were the better team, he replied: “No.

“The second half we were there all the game. Manchester United are always a transition team. First half we struggled a bit but second half we were better. In general it as a good performance for a final.”

Man Utd handed fresh injury boost for FA Cup final

United, who have not won a trophy this term, are aiming to stop City winning the domestic double.

Per The Mail, the likes of Mason Mount, Anthony Martial and Victor Lindelof are all fit.

They were all participants in training for the Red Devils as they look to get a starting spot for the game.

United boss Erik ten Hag can also select the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.

  • Getafe keen to keep hold of Mason Greenwood

Getafe keen to keep hold of Mason Greenwood

Getafe President Angel Torres said the LaLiga side hope to keep Mason Greenwood for another season.

He said that  he does not expect the forward to return to parent club Manchester United at the end of the campaign.

The 22-year-old joined Getafe on loan in September after United said they wanted to avoid him becoming a distraction in spite of all criminal charges against him being dropped.

Greenwood had denied all allegations of assault and attempted rape.

He has scored 10 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions for Getafe, who are 10th in LaLiga.

“If it was up to the lad, his parents and the club (Getafe), I think he would continue for another year,” Torres told Radio Marca on Tuesday.

“But regarding Manchester (United), the news that we have from last week where the (Getafe) sporting director went to England to see some games and was with them, is that, if a good offer comes along, they would want to sell because he is not going to go back there.

“We’ll have to wait until the end of June. The people and the coach are very happy with him.

“I think he will remain with us for another season, or at least until January. He is a good footballer.”

United’s new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said in February that the club was yet to make a decision regarding Greenwood’s future`.

Meanwhile,  LaLiga president Javier Tebas has said he hopes the forward will extend his stay in Spain.

  • Feels like the end for Ten Hag – Scholes

Feels like the end for Ten Hag – Scholes

Manchester United Treble winner Paul Scholes can’t see Erik ten Hag surviving last night’s defeat at Crystal Palace.

United were humiliated 4-0 by Palace on Monday night.

Scholes told Premier League Productions: “Tonight almost felt like a final nail in the coffin. There was a lack of knowhow in the team, a lack of effort, going to a team like Crystal Palace, who to be fair are a good team and are doing well, but Manchester United shouldn’t be going there and losing 4-0.

“I felt for a while he (Ten Hag) might get another year and work for a club that has calmed down a little by the new owners but it doesn’t feel like that now.

“I thought who is out there to replace him? With Thomas Tuchel saying he’s leaving Bayern Munich, I don’t think that creates a bigger problem for him (Ten Hag) as the problems are there anyway, I think it’s quite plain to see that he’s on borrowed time.

“Sometimes you get those moments where you think this is the end. I remember Ole Gunnar (Solskjaer) at Watford away, 4-1, it felt very similar to me, it felt like the end.”

  • Man Utd hit by summer transfer budget concerns

Man Utd hit by summer transfer budget concerns

Manchester United may be limited to a net transfer budget of £100 million this summer.

The Red Devils are in trouble with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

According to ESPN, they will have the ability to spend more if they can sell players.

The club have been focusing on assembling a behind the scenes team, including staff members Omar Berrada, Dan Ashworth (not yet hired) and Jason Wilcox.

John Murtough and Richard Arnold have gone, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS now in charge.

The new ownership will have to get creative if they are to make big money signings this summer.

  • Job being decided by FA Cup semi would be crazy – Ten Hag

Job being decided by FA Cup semi would be crazy – Ten Hag

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag said it would be “crazy” to decide on his long-term future based on a single game.

Ten Hag was asked if the players had spared his blushes after winning an FA Cup semi-final penalty shootout win over Coventry City.

United were 3-0 up with 20 minutes to go, before Coventry made it 3-3 and nearly won it 4-3 in extra time only for VAR to rule out a goal for offside.

“That would be crazy. You need the tools to manage this, with all the injuries we don’t have so many tools, we don’t even have a back four in their best positions,” Ten Hag told reporters on his future.

“On that part I have to give the team a compliment, the players managed that, they were in a position that is not in their best. They gave 100%, which they should, but it’s not always easy to play the best football when you’re not in your best position.”

“No, I can’t see that. At the end of the day, it’s about achievement. I see the mistakes we make, but it’s not an embarrassment, it’s a huge achievement,” he added on the game.

“Given a big team from United a decade ago they achieve final three times, now it’s two times in two years, that with all the setbacks, even today, at 3-3 it’s crazy that decision.

“Then we should get a penalty to make it 4-3, that was more a handball than the penalty we conceded. That happens many times. Chelsea, two crazy pens, Liverpool, penalty very debatable. It’s like a curse against us. We’ll take energy from this, we have to build the confidence.”

  • I learn daily from Casemiro – Kobbie Mainoo

I learn daily from Casemiro – Kobbie Mainoo

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has lavished praise on Casemiro.

The youngster is enjoying the season of his life, as he becomes a United and England regular.

However, Mainoo knows that he still has so much to learn about the game as a teenager.

“I think just to scan even more because I feel like he sees things before everyone else does,” said Mainoo, answering a fan question.

“And, playing with him [Casemiro], sometimes he might give you the ball and you’re not expecting it.

“So I think it’s having to just be knowing what he’s thinking and always scanning so, whatever he thinks is happening next, I can try to be as quick and to be clued up as to what he’s thinking to do next. So I can try to get in the right positions and stuff and be around him.

“I mean, in training, you can see it a lot in the way he moves the ball so quickly and the way he sees these passes that not many other people see. So I try to watch him closely and see when he’s looking, when he’s scanning and when he’s looking and what he’s seeing, and try to pick that up in my game so I can be effective as well.”
