Sevilla centre-back tops Man Utd shopping list

Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde is emerging as a major summer target for Manchester United.

The Mirror says United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made the £60million-rated defender his prime transfer target for the summer’s window as he continues to build for the future.

Solskjaer views the 22-year-old Frenchman as an ideal centre-back partner for Harry Maguire, who became the world’s most expensive defender in an £80million move from Leicester City.

Kounde has caught the eye of plenty of potential suitors this season after putting in impressive performances for Sevilla.

Bayern Munich, Juventus and Real Madrid are all keeping Kounde on their radar, as he continues to grow in stature as a modern-day style defender.

The 22-year-old’s contributions on the pitch have gone a long way for Julen Lopetegui’s side, as they sit poised behind Barcelona, Real Madrid and league leaders Atletico Madrid in LaLiga.

While Manchester United have had a strong season so far in the Premier League and have established themselves as potential title contenders, they still want to strengthen their defensive options moving forward.

He told MUTV: “Yes, Amad will play in the game against Liverpool in the Under-23s.

“He’s been training really well and settling in.

“He’s ready to get some game-time and match exposure.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him. [Liverpool?] There you go. Welcome to English football!”

Solskjaer urges Man Utd to move on quickly after shock defeat

Manchester United suffered a huge blow to their Premier League title chances after a shock 2-1 loss to Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

The result means Manchester City remain one point clear at the top with a game in hand on their neighbours.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have been annoyed with David De Gea after the Spaniard’s weak attempt to deny the Blades opening goal.

After a corner was sent into the six-yard box, instead of clearing the ball with a fierce punch, a meek De Gea was beaten in the air by Kean Bryan, who couldn’t believe his luck when his header sailed into an empty net.

Unlike at Fulham last week, United did not respond immediately with a goal of their own as Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford looked particularly lethargic in attack.

Solskjaer left his side unchanged after the half-time interval and would have thought a victory was imminent when Harry Maguire equalised with a sharp header after 64 minutes.

But it was Oli Burke’s deflected shot off Axel Tuanzebe which decided the game and handed the visitors their first win over the Red Devils since 1992.

Chris Wilder’s side will be dreaming of a great escape as they move to within ten points of safety with plenty of games remaining in the season.

And speaking after the game, Solskjaer urges his team to move on quickly from the disappointing result.

He said: “Disappointed, we couldn’t get to the heights of the last few months’ football we played. Very disappointing, we couldn’t find a solution to their very compact block and good defence.

“Two wrong decisions, that’s how it is, it’s that kind of season, inconsistent and the referee missed those two.

“That little spark, that edge, we didn’t have that extra creativity, imagination, the X factor we’ve had – it’s happened, we look at it, agree it is not good enough and go again.

“We conceded a poor goal, lost the ball cheaply up the pitch, didn’t get back in and tackle, didn’t clear our lines and didn’t get out to the ball quick enough and we were punished.

“There is no time to feel sorry for yourself because Saturday you go again, we have Arsenal, we have to forget this, learn from it and move on.”

De Gea reveals reasons behind Man Utd resurgence

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has spoken about the reasons behind the club’s resurgence this season.

The Red Devils are in the top two in the Premier League at present, and look set to mount a respectable title challenge for the first time in many seasons.

De Gea, who has won the Premier League with United during the Sir Alex Ferguson era, spoke about the club’s form this term.

“The whole team is ready to play and give everything, that’s the most important thing,” he told United Review – the club’s official matchday programme.

“Everyone is ready to play or to be on the bench or to be in the stands – we are all together. That makes the difference. We feel and hear the others from the bench and the stands, especially without the fans.

“For example, the other day against Fulham, I could hear Granty [Lee Grant] from the stands shouting ‘well done, Dave!’ [Smiles] It was great to have him cheering the team and helping the team, like everyone does.

“The most important thing is the team, not just one player or two players, the whole team is what makes us strong.”

EPL: Marcus Rashford fit after knee fit

Manchester United FC Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Marcus Rashford was fit for Wednesday’s Premier League match with Sheffield United.

Rashford had a scan on his knee after the FA Cup win over Liverpool at the weekend but the England forward is set to play as United try to protect their two-point lead.

“He trained this morning. He is available for selection.

“He tweaked his knee a little bit. We are looking strong, which is a good place to be,” Solskjaer told reporters Tuesday.

  • Man Utd beat Liverpool in FA Cup thriller

Bruno Fernandes came off the bench to fire Manchester United past fierce rivals Liverpool in a pulsating FA Cup fourth-round tie.

Mohamed Salah’s clever finish gave Liverpool the lead, only for breakaway goals from Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford to turn it around.

Salah levelled it up once more by sweeping in from close range.

Fernandes’ pinpoint free-kick settled it, sending the Premier League leaders to a fifth-round meeting with West Ham.

Ex-Man Utd defender questions Cavani signing

Former Manchester United defender Paul McGrath isn’t convinced by Edinson Cavani.

He wrote for the Sunday World: “He was a type of forward I hated marking, one for whom movement was his thing.

“Cavani is always on the move, sniffing where the ball might be.

“A defender never gets a minute’s peace with him, because you know he is a deadly finisher and will turn the smallest ‘quarter-chance’ into a goal.

“But Cavani is now 33. Why was he not playing for Manchester United at the peak of his career?

“Why is the great Thiago Silva only now leading Chelsea’s back-line at the age of 36?

“And what is Gareth Bale doing back at Spurs, but hardly playing, at the age of 31?

“Do they all see the Premier League as some sort of gigantic pension scheme from which they can knock out a couple more years of decent salary?

“If that’s the case, good luck to them. But why are England’s finest clubs employing them?”

Man Utd field loan offers for Van de Beek

Manchester United have turned down loan offers this month for Donny van de Beek.

ESPN says United have had to turn down loan proposals for Van de Beek.

Van de Beek’s start to life at Old Trafford hasn’t gone as anyone would have planned since his summer move from Ajax, with his role mainly reduced to substitute appearances in the Premier League.

However, the report says United have no plan to let him leave, even on loan, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to keep his squad together as he looks to win the FA Cup, Europa League, and Premier League.

  • Dad leaves Man Utd door open for Haaland

Dad leaves Man Utd door open for Haaland

The father of Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has opened the door to a future move to Manchester United.

Alfe-Inge Haaland has compared United with Borussia Dortmund in a glowing show of praise amid speculation linking his son with Old Trafford.

Clubs across Europe are keen on acquiring Haaland’s talents, with Chelsea and Real Madrid in strong contention, but United appear to have an advantage.

“Manchester United have achieved great success in recent years,” Haaland told Sport1.

“The club is also trying to build something new there. But to draw comparison now is not so easy because he (Erling) is already playing in Dortmund.

“These are two very traditional clubs with a large fan base and a glorious history. Man United is a very proud club, just like Dortmund in Germany.”

EPL: Solskjaer reacts as Pogba stunner sends Man Utd top

Paul Pogba struck another crucial blow for Manchester United in the Premier League title race with a stunning second-half strike to put his side back on top of the table with a 2-1 victory at Fulham on Wednesday.

The rejuvenated French midfielder arrowed home an unstoppable shot past Fulham keeper Alphonse Areola to settle the contest in the 65th minute at a windy Craven Cottage.

Fulham had actually taken the lead in the fifth minute when Ademola Lookman beat David de Gea with a clinical finish.

But United awoke from their early slumbers and were level after 21 minutes when Areola’s fumble allowed Edinson Cavani to convert from a close range.

United suffered a late scare when Aleksandar Mitrovic’s header deflected off Eric Bailly by going agonisingly wide but United hung on for an eighth away win of the season.

In doing so they equalled a club record of 17 away top-flight games without defeat, although more significantly it saw them move two points clear of Manchester City to lead the table at the halfway stage for the first time in eight years.

City had briefly topped the standings after beating Aston Villa 2-0 earlier on Wednesday. Leicester had knocked United off the top with a 2-0 win over Chelsea on Tuesday.

It was club record signing Pogba’s goal last week at Burnley that sent United to the top, and he again demonstrated that when he is fit and focussed he can be an unstoppable force.

“Fantastic goal by Paul and we had some other chances to finish the game but of course when it is just one goal and the players they put on it is going to be like heart in your mouth,” manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said of the player who has only sporadically shone for United since returning in 2016.

“Paul has really come on. He is fit, he can play in midfield and he can play wide. That is key with Paul, getting him match fit and running fit and he is now. He played very well.”

After City had claimed a sixth successive league win shortly before United kicked off alongside the River Thames, the pressure was on Solskjaer’s side to respond.

The early signs were worrying as Scott Parker’s Fulham were far quicker out of the traps.

They took the lead after a long spell of possession which ended with Andre Anguissa’s pass picking out Lookman to plant a shot past De Gea with United’s defence having switched off, awaiting an offside flag that never came.

The visitors soon clicked into gear though and moments after Bruno Fernandes had thumped a shot against the post he swung in a low cross that Areola flapped at and Cavani tapped home.

Areola redeemed himself with a great save from Fernandes and Harry Maguire also headed wide as United took charge.

Fulham enjoyed another bright spell early in the second half with Lookman presented with a great chance after good work by Ruben Loftus-Cheek, only to shoot straight at De Gea.

United looked the more likely winners though and after 65 minutes Pogba took matters into his own hands. Cutting in from the right he had only one thing on his mind and dispatched a left-foot shot that flew past the helpless Areola.
