Man Utd saw PSG at our worst – Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel says PSG were at their worst against Manchester United on Tuesday.

Last season’s finalists were outplayed against the visiting Red Devils, who found a deserved late winner through Marcus Rashford.

And Tuchel was left unimpressed by his players when speaking after the game.

“In the first half, we were simply not on the pitch,” Tuchel told beIN SPORTS. “It was not our level.

“I don’t know why, but I can just say that it was not our level, in moving the ball, in possession, in counter-attacking, in challenges, in intensity.

“By far, one of our worst games, one of our worst first halves.

“The good news was that it could not be worse. Okay, we were down 1-0, it is easy to play better in the second half and we had to step up, it was clear,” Tuchel added after star forward Neymar failed to score in four consecutive Champions League appearances for the first time since November 2013.

“We tried to do some tactical changes because of the injury of Idrissa Gueye, we tried to bring on one more offensive guy, which was a risk that we paid for at the end also. It was like this today.

“From the start until the end it felt like we were never at our highest level, and we weren’t really into the match like was absolutely necessary on this level.”

Rashford strikes late as Man Utd sink PSG again

Manchester United got their 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League campaign underway in emphatic style on Tuesday when Marcus Rashford’s late goal earned them a 2-1 victory at Paris St-Germain (PSG).

The result handed the French champions their first group stage home defeat in 16 years.

Rashford netted three minutes from time.

His goal came 18 months after scoring the decisive goal in a 3-1 win at PSG which sent Manchester United into the quarter-finals after a 2-0 first leg home defeat.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side went ahead in the Group H encounter with a twice-taken Bruno Fernandes first half penalty kick.

Then, Anthony Martial’s own goal after the break gifted PSG the equaliser, before Rashford wrapped up the win with a precise low shot.

It was PSG’s first UEFA Champions League group stage defeat at the Parc des Princes in 25 games, having last lost 3-1 to CSKA Moscow in 2004.

Thomas Tuchel’s side looked nothing like the one which reached the final of last season’s competition as they lacked energy throughout in an empty Parc des Princes.

Paul Pogba surprisingly started on the Manchester United bench while Marquinhos was not included in PSG’s starting 11, having not recovered in time from a groin injury he sustained on Brazil duty.

He was replaced by Abdou Diallo, who fouled Anthony Martial in the box, handing the visitors a penalty which was converted by Fernandes on his second attempt.

Keylor Navas had saved the first kick, but it had to be retaken after the goalkeeper was judged to have moved off his goal line.

It was a poor start from PSG, who had two chances through Angel Di Maria and Layvin Kurzawa, but lacked aggression.

Fernandes went close to doubling Manchester United’s tally six minutes before the break with a thumping right-footed effort which Navas just tipped around the post.

Kylian Mbappe slalomed through the defence before curling a shot towards the top right corner.

But Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea stretched to tip the ball away three minutes into the second half.

Seven minutes later, Martial headed a Neymar corner-kick into his own net, handing PSG an unexpected equaliser.

The home side, who were also without the injured Mauro Icardi and Marco Verratti, started to find spaces in the defence of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side but they could not capitalise.

The visitors pressed harder in the closing stages and deservedly regained the advantage when Rashford beat Navas with a low diagonal shot into the bottom corner from just inside the box.

Manchester United next host RB Leipzig, who beat Basaksehir 2-0, while PSG will travel to Istanbul to face the Turkish side.

Solskjaer surprises Fernandes with Man Utd captaincy

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer surprised Bruno Fernandes at a joint media conference by announcing he would captain Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday after hailing the Portuguese’s recent impact.

Fernandes has been a revelation since his arrival from Sporting in the January transfer window, scoring 12 goals in 22 appearances across all competitions during the second half of the 2020-21 season.

He also ended the campaign as the club’s joint highest goal creator in the Premier League, sitting alongside Marcus Rashford with seven assists.

With Harry Maguire absent for United’s Champions League clash in Paris, Solskjaer had no hesitation in giving the captain’s armband to Fernandes after his impressive start to life as a United player.

“Bruno has come in and had great impact with all the stats showing that,” he rold reporters ahead of the clash in Paris.

“His performances have been receiving real great praise as well. He has not changed the team, but he has sparked the team.”

Man Utd trigger Pogba contract extension

Manchester United have triggered the 12 month option in Paul Pogba’s contract.

Pogba’s £290,000-a-week deal was due to run out at the end of the season but United made the decision to trigger the clause several weeks ago, says the Daily Mail.

It means Pogba cannot leave as a free agent next summer or talk to foreign clubs in January, having once again described the prospect of playing for Real Madrid as “a dream” last week.

The comment raised more questions over his future at Old Trafford, but at least United have the reassurance of knowing their investment in the 27-year-old midfielder is protected.

“Paul’s our player,” said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “He’s going to be here for another two years and I’m sure he’s focused on doing his best for us.

“We want to see the best of Paul and I’m sure in the next couple of years we’ll get the best out of him.”

Man Utd convinced Cavani to reject PSG contract offer

Manchester United had been in contact with new signing Edinson Cavani since the New Year, it has been revealed.

Cavani signed on deadline day last Monday as a free agent after coming off contract at PSG in June.

United’s move has been criticised by some inside English football over claims it was a desperate act.

But France Football says contact between the two parties was first established in January, with United’s offer impressing Cavani.

Indeed, it’s claimed Cavani’s decision not to renew with PSG this summer was due to United’s proposal at the beginning of the year.

Man Utd spy bargain deal for RB Leipzig defender Upamecano

Manchester United are prepared to move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

United plan to sign Upamecano for a bargain £36.5million next summer.

BILD reports the RB Leipzig centre-back’s release clause will drop to the figure next year, potentially sparking a transfer battle.

The Frenchman was being monitored by a host of Europe’s top clubs during the summer transfer window.

His old contract had a release clause of £54m and would have expired next summer.

But after nobody paid up, Upamecano signed a new deal until 2023 with the reduced release clause coming into force in 2021.

Cavani reveals next club after Man Utd spell

New Manchester United signing Edinson Cavani is keen to sign for Boca Juniors- after his two years at Old Trafford are up.

Cavani has signed a two year contract, with the second year being an option.

The 33-year-old wants to make an impact in the Premier League, but then hopes to go back to South America for a final hurrah.

He admitted to talks with Boca vice president Juan Roman Riquelme about eventually moving there.

“Roman wrote to me with great respect, he wanted to know how I was in this situation, with a very particular salary and we had a very respectful talk,” Cavani told ESPN.

“Boca is a giant of the world, any footballer would like to play there. There have been several Uruguayans that have played there. Following the history of our football arouses curiosity a bit.

“There are some secrets from the conversation with Roman, you have to ask him if he wants to tell them. We will see what happens in the future. It would be very nice to be able to play at Boca one day.”

He added: “I have a two-year contract with Manchester United. I want to do my best here. I feel good.

“The day I return to South America is not going to be when I have nothing left to give. I am realistic, I want to play until I feel good. I will play these two years and see if I continue or go back to South America.”

Cavani’s annual pay at Man Utd revealed

Edinson Cavani is set to earn €11 million (£10m/$13m) per season at Old Trafford after Manchester United eclipsed Atletico Madrid’s offer to strike an agreement with the ex-Paris Saint-Germain star.

According to Goal, Cavani who has been without a club since leaving PSG upon the expiration of his final contract in June, will sign a one-season deal with the option of a second year with the Red Devils on deadline day.

The 33-year-old could pocket an extra €2m in bonuses at Old Trafford and will receive a €4m premium once the transfer is finalised.

Cavani is at Manchester United’s Carrington training complex ahead of their Deadline Day move to the club.

  • ‘Many people at Man Utd need a good slap’

‘Many people at Man Utd need a good slap’

Patrice Evra says that Manchester United’s key figures on and off the field “need a good slap” following their 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Tottenham, with the former Old Trafford favourite adding that their performance was dire enough to make him want to tear up his Sky Sports punditry contract.

The Red Devils were outgunned and outplayed by the visitors at Old Trafford, with the shortcomings of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad highlighted in particularly painful fashion as former boss Jose Mourinho ran rampant over his old side.

But Evra refused to lay the blame for the result solely at the Norwegian’s feet, instead blasting the club’s structure as a whole, with captain Harry Maguire and the board headed by Ed Woodward coming in for particular criticism from the former United favourite, adding that their poor showing made him want to quit his new gig covering games for Sky Sports.

“Alexis Sanchez said a comment, where he signed for United and after his first training session he asked his agent to rip up his contract,” the Frenchman stated after the match. “That is what I am going to ask Sky. I would really like to rip up my contract [after that].

“I’m passionate and I love my club […] but this is a shambles. Gary Neville, you hear him say that Maguire needs a holiday, a break. We always talk about pairing him with someone, but what about taking him out of the squad?

“I don’t want to start to criticise players. I’ve been there. But tonight, there is no excuse. They have let down all the United fans. I don’t care about the result because I have been beat 6-1. It’s just… every year is the same story. I feel like all the United fans right now. It’s why I’d prefer to commentate on a different game than United if I keep working for Sky.”

“But what’s going on with my club? What’s going on today? I’m really emotional. It’s difficult to break me. I’m a positive person. I’m not one to promote violence but many people need a good slap right now. That’s what I would do right now.”

  • Lukaku warns Man Utd against signing Sancho

Lukaku warns Man Utd against signing Sancho

Inter Milan striker Romalu Lukaku insists former club Manchester United doesn’t need to buy Borussia Dortmund attacker Jadon Sancho.

Lukaku doesn’t believe they need additional players like Sancho.

“If you buy another striker, what are you going to do with Anthony [Martial]?” Lukaku quizzed The Times. “He’s not being the No 9 at a great club.

“Give him the full season to confirm what he did last year instead of bringing in someone big to disrupt the chemistry in the dressing room.

“Then you have Mason’s (Greenwood) transition that is going to happen any time soon from right wing to No 9, and Mason is a killer. I’ve seen him first hand. He’s got something.”
