Osun govt probes Ighalo’s loan move to Man Utd

Osun State House of Assembly have opened a probe into the alleged diversion of €10,000 received by Nigerian club Osun United due to Odion Ighalo’s loan move to Manchester United.

Ighalo completed a temporary switch to Old Trafford from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua in January, a deal which was later extended until January 2021.

His return to England earned his first professional club Osun United, formerly known as Prime FC, who play in the Second Division of the Nigerian league, a reported sum of €10,000 (4.5 million naira).

The Osogbo-based outfit received the money at a time when they were struggling financially to register for the 2020-21 Nigeria National League season and pay their players’ salaries.

This €10,000 from the loan of Ighalo to Manchester United would have reportedly helped the club meet their financial commitments, although there are concerns that the funds did not actually arrive in the club’s coffers.

The Chairman of Osun House Committee on Sports, Hon. Adrullahi Adegbile confirmed their investigation is still ongoing and he assured all individuals involved in the alleged diversion of the funds will be summoned.

“When we got the information, we invited all the parties. After a thorough investigation into the issue, I assure you, we will make our findings public. We will still invite them this week,” Adegbile told the Punch.

  • Carabao Cup: Man Utd cruise to last eight

Carabao Cup: Man Utd cruise to last eight

Manchester United beat Brighton for the second time in four days, with Paul Pogba scoring a free-kick to help seal their progress to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

On Saturday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side needed a dramatic late penalty, awarded via VAR after the full-time whistle had blown, to beat the Seagulls 3-2 in a game packed with incident.

This was a less frantic and fun affair, played out by largely second-string sides and in periods of torrential rain.

And it was settled in far more routine fashion, with midfielder Scott McTominay finding space in the box to head home Juan Mata’s free-kick from close range in the first half.

Having sent on both Pogba and Marcus Rashford, Mata then sealed the result with a cool finish from inside the box after he was found by a neat flick from Donny van de Beek.

Pogba added the garnish with a direct set-piece that found the top corner via a deflection.

It was an otherwise even game for large periods, with chances for both sides.

Odion Ighalo hit the side-netting from an angle after taking the ball around home goalkeeper Jason Steele, while Leandro Trossard drew a superb save from Dean Henderson in the United net with a shot from close range.

United are close to getting a deal done for the 27-year-old, having agreed personal terms

But according to Correio de Manha, Porto have raised their transfer demands due to several pre-agree clauses.

To cover the costs, the Portuguese have raised their asking price from €20m (£18m) to €27m (£24.7m).

Man Utd board divided over RB Leipzig defender

Manchester United are mulling over a move for Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig.

The Red Devils are eager to sign the highly rated young centre-back.

He has a release clause in his contract that activates next summer, but United know there could be a lot more competition for him at that time.

And The Telegraph – via Metro says United’s board is debating whether to sign Upamecano this summer or wait a season.

It would take roughly £60 million to sign him now, and he would be available for 20 million less next summer.

Upamecano is 21 and some on United’s board are unsure whether he is ready to take on the challenge of playing for the club.

It is a huge fee and they want to make sure they do their due diligence before committing to the player.

“Before he arrived, a few people outside the club weren’t too sure what he was going to bring to the club, but he’s shown everyone because he’s brought goals and a different style to our other strikers.

“He’s earned and deserved the chance to stay here longer. He brings happiness and a smile to the place.
