I had issues with Sancho all through at Man Utd – Ten Hag

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has claimed that Jadon Sancho was a problem before his arrival.

The Dutch head coach appeared to have a challenging time managing the English winger.

Sancho publicly stated on social media that Ten Hag was making him a scapegoat, which led to his banishment from the first team and eventual winter loan to Borussia Dortmund.

Ten Hag told Sky Sports: “He’s now at Dortmund. So after he was signed, one year before [I was here], and there were issues. We have had issues all the way through, and so you can make out his stay at Manchester United so far is not a success.

“So now he is going back to Borussia Dortmund, so I wish him the best of luck. I hope, we all hope he is doing well there, he will be successful. Again, we will see what is going to happen.

[Would things be different if he had apologized?] “We have said that before. And I don’t want every time to return to the point. He knows what he should do and we have made that clear.

“It was also so clear and obvious about his performance so let’s stop this discussion. He is to Dortmund and we wish him the best of luck.”

  • What I’d tell Man Utd striker Hojlund – Berbatov

What I’d tell Man Utd striker Hojlund – Berbatov

A former Manchester United striker has given some advice to young striker Rasmus Hojlund.

The 20-year-old has been a United player since the summer, when he signed from Atalanta.

In that time, Hojlund has only managed ONE Premier League goal, despite netting five in the Champions League.

Ex-Red Devil Dimitar Berbatov has some advice for Hojlund, telling The Mirror: “I know exactly what he was going through when he didn’t score a goal because every striker have a spell with not scoring goal, maybe a short one, maybe a long one.

“I know how difficult it can be in that circle of thinking ‘Am I ever going to score a goal? What is going on? Am I good enough? Am I doing enough for my teammates, for myself?’

“All this thinking going through my mind and how difficult it is to think like that.

“He needs to stop thinking like this. That is negative thinking. It’s going to put you nowhere. It’s the simple things.

“Go to the training ground and if you need to, stand in the front of the empty goal, take someone to cross you the ball and tap-in, tap-in, tap-in and move further from the goal. Do the same. Further, do the same.

“Try different positions just to get the habit of knowing the goal. Implement this into training and this is it.”

EPL: Sir Jim Ratcliffe completes 25% Manchester United take over

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has acquired 25 per cent of Manchester United and will  take control of football operations soonest according to reports on the Club’s website.

An announcement finally came on Christmas Eve, bringing an end to 13 months of talks about a potential takeover of the Old Trafford club.

It is expected Sir Dave Brailsford – INEOS director of sport – and Jean-Claude Blanc – CEO of INEOS Sport and a former executive at Juventus and Paris St-Germain – will have seats on the Manchester United club board.

The deal, which comes amid a torrid season for United on the pitch, is still to be approved by the Premier League – a process expected to take between six and eight weeks.

There is no formal agreement for Ratcliffe to buy any of the Glazers’ shares in the future but the Ineos chairman has the right of first refusal on any they sell in the future.

Ratcliffe confirms purchase of 25% stake in Man Utd

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s purchase of a 25 per cent shareholding in Manchester United has been announced.

Ratcliffe is paying just over £1bn for the stake.

His Ineos Group will take control of football operations.

The 71-year-old will also make £235m available for future investment in Old Trafford.

In a statement, Ratcliffe said: “Whilst the commercial success of the club has ensured there have always been available funds to win trophies at the highest level, this potential has not been fully unlocked in recent times.

“We will bring the global knowledge, expertise and talent from the wider Ineos Sport group to help drive further improvement at the club, while also providing funds intended to enable future investment into Old Trafford.

“We are here for the long term and recognise that a lot of challenges and hard work lie ahead, which we will approach with rigour, professionalism and passion. We are committed to working with everyone at the club – the board, staff, players and fans – to help drive the club forward.

“Our shared ambition is clear: we all want to see Manchester United back where we belong, at the very top of English, European and world football.”

The deal will now take 6-8 weeks to be ratified, with the Premier League also to sign-off on the purchase.

  • Ten Hag offers no excuses after Man Utd lose at West Ham

Ten Hag offers no excuses after Man Utd lose at West Ham

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag offered no excuses after their 2-0 defeat at West Ham.

Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus struck the goals for the hosts.

Ten Hag said: “I think it was a decent 72 minutes where we didn’t take our chances. We should’ve gone in the lead but we didn’t and then it was one moment of switching off.

“We tried. West Ham weren’t running behind us for a long period in the game and then they got the goal and then of course you encourage the team. From that they were very aggressive defending the box and from that moment it’s difficult to create a chance.

“At this moment we are not top, but we have seen last week against the top of this league we were head-to-head. We didn’t score, we had the best opportunities of the game. There we defended very well for 90 minutes, that has to be always our standard like what we did there. You have to bring that to every game on the pitch

“In 2023, we won a Cup, we played the FA Cup final, we were third in the league. There were highlights but we are over-performing, but in this moment we are underperforming. There are reasons for it, we have many injuries, so the team will be better if the injured ones return. We have to be calm, stick together, stick to the plan, we have to do it together.”

On Alejandro Garnacho’s miss, he added: “I think he is confident, he’s in good form at the moment. He was one on one with the keeper and he could’ve taken it but we didn’t.”

I told Man Utd to get rid of some players – Mourinho

AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho says there’s still players at Manchester United he told to get rid of.

    Mourinho left United in 2018.

On John Obi Mikel’s ‘Obi One’ podcast, he said: “There are still people in that club, and when I say people I mean some players.

“But also some other people that are not players, that are still there when I told [United] after two months: With these people, you are never going to do it [be successful].

    “And they are still there.”

Mourinho, however, did not name names.

  • We cannot be anything other than rivals – Klopp tells Man Utd

We cannot be anything other than rivals – Klopp tells Man Utd

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expects to face a motivated Manchester United today.

The Reds will host United today as overwhelming favourites, having won last season’s fixture 7-0.

Klopp wrote in his match programme notes: “I would like to offer an especially warm welcome to Erik ten Hag, his staff, and the United players and supporters. Although today is a day for wanting to out-do one another, it is important that we do so in the right way and this way starts and finishes with respect. Nothing else makes sense.

“Our history, our location, and our success mean that we cannot be anything other than rivals, of course. This ‘relationship’ has been created over decades of being prominent in the English game and this makes me very proud to be part of it. Again, though, the pride I have at being part of Liverpool’s story does not mean I cannot see why those from the other end of the motorway have very similar feelings about their club.

“It also means I know what to expect today and that is a proper, proper test. I could not care less about last season’s result in this fixture. That gives us no advantage whatsoever today and, if anything, it adds to United’s incentive.

“If the rules of football allowed goals from one game to be carried on to the next I might think differently but they do not of course, which means I don’t need to remind anybody that today’s game starts at 0-0 and with both teams being equal until they prove otherwise.”

  • EPL: We’re not scared going to Liverpool – Ten Hag

EPL: We’re not scared going to Liverpool – Ten Hag

Liverpool are not a team that Manchester United fear as they prepare to take them on in the Premier League.

That is the view of manager Erik ten Hag, who lost 7-0 at Anfield in the league last season.

As he takes his beleaguered, injury-riddled team to the same stadium on Sunday, he was bullish.

Ten Hag told reporters: “No [not worried]. We will put out a team that can challenge and we’ll prepare them in the best way we can. We are confident we can put out a team that can win.”

He added on the last season: “I haven’t seen last season we were scared there. It was a bad experience, but it’s not similar, you start again. Last year, the first half we played very decent and we got hammered just after half-time, then we collapsed. That can’t happen but it’s last year, it’s a different team and different players for a part at least. We won’t ignore it, but we’ll be confident and we have to fight, challenge and go there with the idea, to prepare to win.”

He then finished on the game: “Everyone is highly motivated when you go to Anfield, it’s a great place to go. You know it’s going to be tough and what every top footballer wants is that challenge. You have to look forward and last year, we take that in our memory, but you have to take the benefit and learn from it. On Sunday, we can prove that.”

  • Sancho knows what to do, it’s up to him – Ten Hag

Sancho knows what to do, it’s up to him – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag insists he’s willing to consider Jadon Sancho for selection.

However, the winger must apologise for criticising Ten Hag online first.

“He knows what he has to do, it is up to him,” Ten Hag said.

“What will happen there, he knows what he has to do, if he wants to return it is up to him. It is about a culture and every player has to match certain standards and it was about that.”

Sancho hasn’t been part of first team training since September after hitting out a Ten Hag for being dropped for defeat at Arsenal.

  • Andre Onana rethinks AFCON commitment

    Andre Onana rethinks AFCON commitment

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is rethinking his commitment to Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Onana is due to turn out for Cameroon in the tournament which will run from January 13 to February 11.

And he is rethinking his commitment after a series of poor performances for United in recent weeks, says The Sun.

Onana is worried about his long-term place under pressure from backup keeper Altay Bayindir and feels he still needs to prove himself as the club’s outright No1.

United manager Erik ten Hag recently stated: “We are pleased with the goalkeeping group. They have to push each other.

“We are very pleased with Altay who is doing very well, he just has to be patient.

“If he works well and continues his progress, he will get his chance and will have to take it.”
