Man jumps into Lagos Lagoon, dies

A yet-to-be-identified middle-aged man has drowned after reportedly jumping into the Lagos Lagoon in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased jumped into the lagoon after trekking on the Third Mainland Bridge inwards Lagos Island.

It was learnt that the man was rescued by some fishermen and officials of the Lagos State Waterways Authority.

A member of the rescue team, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said despite efforts by paramedics to resuscitate the victim, he eventually passed on.

He said, “The man jumped into the lagoon around 7.24am. He was rescued by some fishermen and transported to Ebute Ero by LASWA officials. After several hours of trying to resuscitate him, he, unfortunately, passed on.

The man’s identity could not be ascertained. He apparently resorted to the action out of frustration. His body was handed over to officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the case was not reported to the police.

The Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Mahmud Hassan, said some officials of the agency witnessed the incident.

He advised people against taking their own lives.

People should learn to speak out whatever their problem is and they should seek help before it is too late. When there is life, there is hope,” he added.

This is the latest in a series of suspected suicide attempts off the third mainland bridge.
In June 2018, there were reports of a woman who allegedly jumped off the bridge into the water.
In the same vein, a medical doctor, Allwell Orji, jumped to his death into the lagoon in March 2017.

“On getting there, we saw our traditional ruler in a pool of his blood with a knife in the chest.

” We tried rushing him to the hospital, but Oba Ogunsakin gave up the ghost,” another resident, who does not want his name mentioned, said.

“ Our men are combing the bush to fish out the suspect.

” All I can say for now is that the suspect is within reach and will be put in custody,” he said.

  • Ignore pressure to sign-on to AfCFTA agreement – MAN advises FG

Ignore pressure to sign-on to AfCFTA agreement – MAN advises FG

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has urged the Federal Government to ignore pressure from certain quarters in the industry to urgently sign-on to the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

Dr Frank Jacobs, President of MAN, made the appeal at a news conference on Wednesday in Lagos, tagged: “Matters arising on the AfCFTA”.

AfCFTA is a trade agreement between African Union (AU) member states, with the goal of creating a single market to ensure free movement and a single currency union.

The AfCFTA was signed in Rwanda on March 21, 2018.

Signing the act does not yet establish the agreement but once all documents are concluded and ratified by members, the free trade among AU member states will formally exist.

Jacob urged the government to continue to withhold its sign-on to the agreement until a credible outcome from an ongoing study initiated by the government on the matter was received.

He said that Nigeria could become the key driver of improved volume of intra-African trade if the rules of origin, countervailing measures, dispute settlement, amongst other, were addressed.

He, however, reiterated that the only way to guarantee this positive proposition was to ensure that the negotiating team was guided by a credible and strategic study.

“In the light of recent developments, we considered it necessary to intimate you (Federal Government) that an insignificant number of non-real sector operators in the private sector are tactfully recommending that Mr President signs the agreement.

“We (MAN) say they are essentially not at home with the technicalities of a trade agreement of this magnitude.

“The pronouncement of this group of actors is not representative of the views of the Organised Private Sector of Nigeria.

“We need to be certain that the agreement is in sync and not constraining our extant economic policies, including the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) and the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP),” he said.

The MAN chief reiterated that concerns on the implications of signing the agreement, which had been raised since March, had till this moment not been addressed.

“We are concerned about the impact of AfCFTA on the nation’s tax structure, government revenue, the welfare of over 180 million Nigerians and its impact on the industrialisation and economic development aspirations of Nigeria.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we again request that Mr President should not sign the AfCFTA agreement until the outcome of a credible study so indicates.

“He should but graciously allow the nation’s team to resume participation in the negotiation processes only to ensure that the country is abreast of developments.

“This will certainly not jeopardise or constrain the reservation of our assent, should we eventually decide that the agreement is definitely not in our favour.

“It will only mean that, whilst keeping our eyes on the goings-on, we can continue with our much needed and sovereign path to determine whether we should sign-on or not,” he said.

He lauded the clear demonstration of the commitment of Buhari and his government to the growth of the manufacturing sector; its preservation and the improvement of the wellbeing of the citizenry and the economy.

  • Student allegedly robs man of N100,000 at gun-point

A 24-year-old student, Obinna Okponwa, has been remanded in Kirikiri Prison by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly robbing a man of N100,000.

The Magistrate, Mrs. F.F George, did not take the plea of the accused, but ordered that he should be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions.

Okponwa, who resides at Olodi Apapa, Lagos, is being tried for arming himself with firearms and stealing.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 12 at Ben Onyeka Street, Apapa, Lagos.

He said that the accused armed himself with a gun to rob Mr. Godwin John of his N100,000 cash.

“The complainant, who sells food items, was in his shop when the accused entered under the pretext of buying rice. He pointed the gun at the complainant, ordering him to comply or be killed.

“The accused opened the complainant’s drawer, took the N100,000 he kept inside.

“After the suspect left the complainant’s shop, the complainant raised alarm shouting ‘thief thief’, following which the people gave him a hot chase and he was apprehended.

“The stolen money was recovered and he was handed over to the Police,” the prosecutor said.

The offences contravened sections 287 and 298 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Section 298 prescribes 21-year imprisonment for armed robbery.

The case was adjourned until September 27 for mention

  • How man killed fiancée, deposited her body in a bin in Lagos [Video]

The man who murdered his fiancee and deposited her corpse in a bin in Oshodi, Lagos, is believed to have killed her because another man picked her call while he was away on a journey.

Isaiah Chukwu, 35, a spare parts dealer in Ladipo, Oshodi, lived with his 26-year-old lover, identified only as Joy, in a house on Balogun Street, Oshodi. Though not married, Chukwu and Joy, both indigenes of Ebonyi State, had been living together for the past two years.

All seemed smooth in their relationship until Chukwu traveled, then called Joy on the phone, only to hear another man’s voice. He concluded Joy was cheating on him and when he returned to Lagos, he stabbed her in the back. He then declared her missing.

However, he ran out of luck when he tried disposing of the body and was caught by youths in the neighborhood.

To dispose of the body, Chukwu stuffed his victim into a bin with her legs tied, then he put the bin in a sack and knotted the top.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCBwnmm9q1s

At about 4am on Monday, he dragged the sack containing the body to go dump it but as he got to the ground floor of the house he was accosted by some youths. The suspicious youths asked what the content of the sack was but the suspect ignored them. An Islamic cleric passing by then opened the sack and found the corpse. At this, the mob pounced on the suspect and beat him to a pulp.

Residents who spoke to Punch Metro on Tuesday said they were shocked because the couple lived together peacefully. Friends of the deceased said Joy adored Chukwu and spoke fondly of him.

A friend of the deceased said:

They don’t fight. In fact, people always envied their relationship. The woman could be doing something and immediately she heard that he was around, she would leave it and say, ‘My oga don come. My darling don come.’ I never believed this could happen.

A police source told Punch that Joy was stabbed in the back.

We recovered a knife which he used for the crime and four mobile phones from the house. Although investigations are ongoing, we suspect it had to do with suspicion of infidelity.

The man said he had called her when he travelled and a man picked the call. He said the man queried him (Chukwu) for disturbing his wife.

Narrating what happened, the suspect said:

I travelled on Thursday to attend a burial in Abraka, Delta State. I left Abraka the following day for my hometown in Ebonyi State. I called my wife around 11pm to know how she was faring. We exchanged pleasantries.

Around 11.45pm, I called again, but she did not pick her calls. I called about 10 times, but she did not pick. Then I heard a man’s voice.

On Monday (after he returned), as I was going to take my bath, I saw the corpse.

A sibling of the victim broke down in tears at the Akinpelu Police Station upon hearing the news of Joy’s death. As a result, the sibling couldn’t speak to the police but her husband spoke on her behalf.

    He said:

They were not married, although he has visited her family members in the village. They have been living together for the past two years without formalising their marriage. He rented that apartment for her, while he stayed with his brothers in another house. He used to go to meet her at her apartment.

She (Joy) had come to see my wife about a week ago to say that she was no longer interested in the relationship. But the man said he could not let go because of the money he had spent on her. My wife counselled her to consider him and she said she would think about it before this incident happened.
