Man drags police officer’s firearm over seizure of his phone (Video)

A young man has engaged police officers in a heated argument while dragging their firearm for confiscating his phone at a checkpoint.

A video making rounds on social media captured the moment two individuals battled with police officers over their property.

One of the police officers had taken possession of one of the individuals’ phones with the intention of sniffing information from it.

The young man whose smartphone was taken held tightly to the officer’s gun while insisting on having his phone back at all cost.

Recall that the Nigerian Police had warned its personnel to stop checking people’s phone arbitrarily on road because they have no right to do so.

Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Chief Superintend of Police (CSP) Muyiwa Adejobi, restated this early this month while appearing on Channels Television Sunrise Daily.

He said: “Stop checking phones on the road. You can’t check somebody’s phone. It is his personal property. You cannot do it.”

The Force PRO commented on the activities of the police and recent disciplinary actions taken against some policemen for assaulting Nigerians, among other issues.

Asked if the police are taking steps to prevent more policemen from violating the rights of Nigerians, he said efforts were in place, stressing that in every organisation and society there will be deviants.

“In the Police, we have those who are deviants. There is no policeman who doesn’t know that you must not dress improperly, you must not smoke while on duty, you must not slap the Nigerian, you must not use cutlass to flog.

“There is no Nigerian police personnel who will tell me today that they are not aware because, in the training school, it’s part of our manual; they must have taught you all these things,”Adejobi said.

Stressing that the police force operates based on laws, the he said the Force will continue
to take necessary disciplinary actions against errant
    officers.

“So, if a policeman has done something wrong, every offence — disciplinary offence or criminal offence — has its punishment. If it is reduction in rank, we give it to you; if it is dismissal, we give to you; if it is severe reprimand, we give to you…

“But it is clear, how can a policeman stand on the road and be collecting money? It is not a disciplinary offence, it is a criminal offence. Corruption is a criminal offence. If you flog somebody, you assault somebody, it is a criminal offence,” he said.

  • Special Report: Examining implications of CBN’s 14% monetary policy rate

Special Report: Examining implications of CBN’s 14% monetary policy rate

Rising inflation rate which peaked at 18.6 per cent in June, unsettled members of Nigeria’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), resulting in a unanimous vote to tighten the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) from 13 per cent to 14 per cent.

“Inflation is a terrible scourge and so we need to do more work on inflation. As long as we see inflation at a level that deters growth, the MPC is very determined that if it continues, we would continue to tighten rate,” Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG), meanwhile, recalls that the last time MPR rose to 14 per cent was in 2016 when inflation rate was at 15.7 per cent.

The broad outlook for both the global and domestic economies in the medium-term remain clouded with uncertainties arising from the Russian-Ukraine war, lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and substantial disruptions to the supply chain.

While the latest MPR is expected to adjust the supply of money in the economy and promote real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, the implication for the manufacturing sector is increased level of interest rates on loanable funds.

Chief Executive Officer for Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), Muda Yusuf said that the tightening will only worsen the plight of entrepreneurs or those in production in the economy.

“Because many of them are indebted to the bank, it will mean they will review the credit and so it will go higher for those investors and it is not going to have an impact on inflation.

“This economy is not a credit driven economy and there is no way you can use monetary policy issues to solve these challenges.

“So, what they have done is create problems for investors who are battling with exchange rate, high cost of diesels, scarcity of foreign exchange, purchasing power among others,” Yusuf said.

Higher interest rate will also put pressure on input cost which will in turn cause business production to decline, and may lead to lay-offs and aggravate unemployment rate pegged at 33 per cent and worsen insecurity.

Director General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Segun Ajayi-Kadri, noted that the increase in MPR would lengthen the journey towards the preferred single digit interest rate regime.

“MAN is, therefore, concerned about the ripple effects of this decision and its implications for the manufacturing sector that is visibly struggling to survive the numerous strangulating fiscal and monetary policy measures and reforms,” Ajayi-Kadri said.

However, MPC members believe that tightening will signal a strong determination of CBN to aggressively address its price stability mandate and portray the emphasis on sensitivity to the impact of inflation on the vulnerable households and the need to improve their disposable income.

Members also called on the Federal Government to seek a long-term and viable solution to strike a balance between the pricing and supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in the country and do more to increase food supply in order to check food inflation.

NASENI To Take Lead in Facilitating Nation’s Economic Growth -MAN President

The President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) Engr. Mansur Ahmed has disclosed that Nigeria had need to spend N3 trillion over the space of 30 years to bridge the country’s infrastructure gap even as he urged the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to play lead role of leveraging on Science, Technology and Engineering infrastructures to fully facilitate sustainable economic growth and development of Nigeria in line with the objectives of the National Development Plans (NDP) 2021-2025 and beyond.

In his keynote address at the occasion of NASENI Day event held in Abuja at the Technology and Innovation Expo 2022, organized by the Federal Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (FMSTI), the MAN President said NASENI was central to the sustainable delivery of the National Economic Development plans which requires N348.1 trillion investment which 85% is expected to come from the private sector.

The MAN President, represented by Mr. Nyananso Gabriel Ekanem, Managing Consultant, WeirCapacity, stated that the six broad objectives of the Nigeria development plan are: Economic diversification, investment in infrastructure, security and good governance, educated and healthy population, poverty alleviation and economic and social development across States of the federation.

Decrying the financial gap in infrastructural development, he said, Nigeria needed to spend N3 trillion over the space of 30 years in order to bridge the country’s infrastructure gap.
“Significant financing from the private sector and multilateral funding are needed to address Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit. Nigeria is behind other emerging market peers and will require significant investments to bridge its infrastructure gap.”

He further stressed that “NASENI should align its strategic directions with the objectives of Nigeria’s National Development plans (starting with NDP 2021-2025). NASENI may also need to rework its institutional structure, infrastructure need and resource plans in tandem with emerging requirements for the implementation of NDPs. NASENI should take the lead role for leveraging the Nigeria science, technology and engineering infrastructure to fully facilitate sustainable economic growth and development of the country”.

He however noted that Nigeria is faced with many budgeting and financing challenges, which according to him include weak institutions and governance framework along with a low tax base which was hindering infrastructure investments.

In his address, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive of NASENI, Engr. Prof. Mohammed Sani Haruna said the need to embrace and develop local capacity and capability for innovations leading to a manufacturing economy and growth could not be overemphasized. He frowned at the Nigeria economy being at the mercy of a fluctuating commodity market alone.

Prof. Haruna said “Science and Engineering Infrastructure drive all economies of the world. Our national economy will continue to be in stagnations except we invest in science and engineering infrastructure both in facilities and human capacity. Our manufacturing sector which ought to be a major driver of our economy is suffering because of lack of engineering and other social economic infrastructures”
The NASENI boss used the occasion to commend President Muhammadu Buhari for approving and granting all that were needed to reposition NASENI for a solid and sustainable industrialization of Nigeria including funding requirements.

According to Prof. Haruna “there are promising indicators already against the backdrop of a World Bank report of January 2022. Nigeria’s economy is expected to grow by 2.5% in 2022 and 2.8% in 2023. Based on the report, global growth is expected to decelerate markedly from 5.5 per cent to 4.1 percent in 2022, then 3.2 percent in 2023. In order to sustain this economic growth, Nigeria has no alternative than to continuously invest generously in research and development in the areas of Science, Technology and Innovation”, he explained.

Speaking as the chair of the occasion, former President of MAN, Chief kola Jamodu expressed satisfaction in NASENI’s capacity and innovations, therefore, he encouraged investors, entrepreneurs, and the general public to patronize NASENI’s local and indigenous technologies.

    32-year-old man marries identical triplets

A man got married to triplets on the same day in Congo.

The 32-year-old man, identified as Luwizo, married three sisters named Natalie, Nadege, and Natasha.

The groom said he met Natalie via Facebook and he fell in love with her after they chatted for a while, according to Afrimax English.

He decided to meet up with her and she introduced him to her sisters, Nadege and Natasha, and they fell in love with him too.

Luwizo recalled the first time he met Natalie’s identical sisters.

He said: “I was very much surprised that I almost fainted. It seems like I was dreaming!”

Since the triplets are inseparable, they chose to marry the same man.

Asked about how they handled the situation, one of the triplets said: “When we told him he had to marry all of us, he was shocked. But because he had already fallen in love with all of us, nothing could stop our plans since we were also in love with him.

“Even though people considered it impossible for three women to share one husband, to us, sharing everything has been our life since childhood.”

Luwizo said although his parents didn’t approve of his decision and decided not to attend his wedding, he has no regrets whatsoever going forward with it.

He said: “You have to lose something in order to gain another. In addition, one has their preferences and their own way of doing things. So I’m happy to marry the triplets no matter what others think. My parents despised my decision and that’s why they didn’t attend my wedding. But all I can say is love has no limits.”

The triplets brides said: “Today we are very happy, as you can see, because our dreams come true without being separated by husbands, but God heard our prayers.”

Natalie explained: “He wasn’t able to differentiate us, so we ended up falling in love with him. At first, when we told him that he has to marry all of us became a puzzle to him. But because he had already fell in love with all of us. Even though people consider it impossible for three women to share one husband but to us sharing everything is our life since our childhood.”

Man remanded in prison for allegedly “fingering” his 3 adolescent daughters

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court has remanded a 43-year-old man, Ademola Oladimeji, for allegedly inserting his finger into the private part of his three adolescent daughters.

Oladimeji, a resident of Fadeyi, was arraigned by the police on a two-count charge of defilement and assault.

The Prosecution Counsel, DSP Kehinde Ajayi, told the court that Oladimeji committed the offence sometime in 2021, in his residence at Fadeyi.

Ajayi explained that the mother of the girls had reported that the accused had been defiling their daughters aged nine, seven, and five.

The Prosecution informed the court that when the girls’ mother found out, she confronted her husband, who got angry, beat her and inflicted injuries on her body.

According to Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2005, defilement attracts life imprisonment.

In the ruling, the Magistrate, A.O. Ajibade, who refused to take Oladimeji’s plea, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

She adjourned the case until March 2 for the DPP’s advice and directed the suspect be remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

  • Man and the justice of heaven – By Hope Eghagha

Man and the justice of heaven – By Hope Eghagha

    By Hope O’Rukevbe Eghagha

In the light of the extreme forces currently ravaging the cosmos, challenging, and disrupting the world moral order, killing off human beings like birds eating ants, with the ascendancy of impunity and strongarm tactics, it may be apposite to examine what may be the last resort of man- an appeal, a reminder that ultimately, there is Great One, the Almighty Force which will hold man accountable for evil deeds known and unknown. How many eardrums will catch the drift of this treatise is cause for worry. How many will heed the warning is another kettle of fish! Yet the spoken or written word is testimony of the wailing one against the rapists of the world order!

Eternal justice is the final principle which governs the affairs of humanity, of the world and of the cosmological order. Justice is crucial to a balance of the forces of nature, and of the relationship between man and man and between man and the order of things, visible and invisible, now and in the future. Justice and its principles, go beyond man utterly. So, it is a forever thing. Man often does not comprehend the depth or scope or dynamism of justice. He often ignores the principles of justice, hoping, praying, and believing that nemesis will never catch up with him. He thinks that he will get away with acts of injustice, impunity, of infinite callousness to fellow human beings. How small-minded can man be sometimes!

All the religions acknowledge this. Sophocles the classical dramatist once wrote: ‘Justice that dwells with the gods below, knows no such laws’, recognizes no law which oppress the poor and weak. Man in his spiritual state knows this. But when he is swept away by the pleasures of the transient world, those deep things become ephemeral and he floats into the world of injustice, destruction, oppression and annihilation of beings he cannot create.

Justice, we are taught is ‘the quality of being just, impartial, or fair’. It is the ‘principle or ideal of just dealing or right action. It is further seen as ‘conformity to this principle or ideal. Right and wrong are embedded in our consciousness. Remember that we speak of actions that have consequence. We speak of actions carried out when man is conscious; of our hidden and open acts in the world which invariably have effects on the order of things, on us and our descendants. There be some who face the consequences of their actions this side of the world. Some it is automatic, ddirect, flowing from the actions which we have taken. And we weep, ‘why me?, forgetting that which we have wrought with our evil hands. ‘Nemesis’, a philosopher once wrote, ‘is that recoil of nature that ever surprises the most wary transgressor’.

In the eyes of mortals, man may even get away with acts which trample upon the ideals and practice of justice. But justice which rules the world from above is the final arbiter in the fate of man. Of one’s final fate we are not in a position to tell. Power- physical, financial or otherwise- has the capacity to lead us to a delusion. And for this reason, we will believe a lie, live with the lie, and perhaps die with the lie. At some point in the journey of life we realize that the consequences of our action have locked us in time or have led us to destruction. That is justice!

In our age, the State is charged with the responsibility to carry out justice through the courts, the lower and higher courts. Man knows that even institutions of State charged with the responsibility of discharging justice sometimes enter into a miscarriage. A learned judge could ‘misdirect himself, in the course of dispensing justice. A judge could be compromised by the powers-that-be or by promise of the notorious filthy lucre. For this reason appellate courts are created. It is true that even the highest court in the land could trivialize or distort the rules and dispense injustice. In that hour, man appeals to a higher authority whose hands may not be openly visible. But when we remember the words of the Perfect Master that ‘we shall reap whatever we sow’, the eternal truth and power of justice is not lost on the man whose mind has an open eye!

Men of power, ensconced in the material luxury of filthy ephemerals, often delude themselves by thinking that their power is forever, and that they would never be accountable. Even when they have knowledge that their power is ephemeral, it registers as an abstraction, a distant event which may never come. They may even raise the delusion decibel by believing that they would ask God’s forgiveness in the twilight of their lives. And so the fool tells his Maker: God please grant me patience, but hurry!

Those who understand that whereas we could, we may escape man’s justice, the final justice which rules the world is a perfect system, not to be bribed, coerced, twisted, distorted, or manipulated by anyone. No man can escape it. It is beyond the power of any powerful man. It is beyond the power of the most powerful religious leader or charlatan. Who knows what man sees when he finally closes his eyes in the final sleep? As dreams torment the transgressor of sacred rules, are the wicked tortured once they close their eyes? Is that what some call hell, the condition of perpetual pain and suffering? Are there some who live in hell even before they die physically? Are there some whose current physical illness is the result of their improper actions? Is that what some call ‘judgment day?

So, when the philosopher in Soyinka posits that ‘the first condition of humanity is justice’, he calls to the deep. For, that moral compass which directs man in all his dealings must recognize right and wrong, even in the smallest of matters in both our public and private lives. It is the only guarantee of the continued existence of man in the cosmos. If the most favourable political ideology rests on injustice, on exploitation, on racism, the future of humanity would be threatened. It is this notion of justice that holds perpetrators of genocide accountable, now or in the future.

As with the giver, so with the receiver. Those who dispense justice or injustice today will certainly face their fate someday. It is as certain as day and night. The ends of justice therefore should not be toyed with. When the wall tumbles and earth finally closes earth in its pit, it is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of the journey into the final act of justice!

  • Manufacturers react to introduction of N10 excise duty by FG

Manufacturers react to introduction of N10 excise duty by FG

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) says the introduction of excise duty on non-alcoholic beverages will cause a 0.43 per cent contraction in output and about 40 per cent drop on total industry revenues in the next five years.

Mr Segun Ajayi-Kadir, MAN Director General, said this in Lagos while reacting to the introduction of N10 excise duty on carbonated drinks by the Federal Government on Wednesday.

Minister of finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, at the public breakdown of the 2022 budget, said government had introduced N10 per litre on all non-alcoholic, carbonated and sweetened beverages.

The development is aimed at discouraging excessive consumption of sugar in beverages with its attendant health implications, raising revenues for health-related and other critical expenditures in line with the 2022 budget priorities.

Ajayi-kadir explained that food and beverages contributed the highest at 38 per cent of the total manufacturing sector quota to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He added that the sector comprised 22.5 per cent of manufacturing jobs and generated more than 1.5million jobs.

“One is particularly worried about the ripple effect on the introduction of the excise, despite strenuous evidence-based advice to the contrary.

“This will have unpleasant impact on employment, households and consumers.

“As seen from previous impact analysis, excise affects production outputs, revenues and profits.

“This causes companies to pursue cost cutting measures to reduce the effect of diminishing revenue and profits by reducing employee salaries or retrenchment.

“So, this excise would certainly cast a sunset to this performance,” he said.

The MAN DG stated that the revenue aspirations of government in introducing this excise may not be justified in the long run.

He noted that the excise estimated to generate N81 billion between 2022-2025 would not be sufficient to compensate the corresponding government’s revenue losses in other taxes from the group.

“For instance, the corresponding effect of reduced industry revenue on government revenues is estimated to be up to N142 billion contraction in Value Added Tax (VAT) raised by the sector and N54 billion Corporate Income Tax reduction between 2022 to 2025.

“This is not to mention the potential negative impact on manufacturers/supply chain.

“Nigeria is the 6th highest consumer of soft drink, but per capita consumption is low.

“Introducing excise will easily reduce production capacity causing manufacturers to struggle to meet investor commitments as well as cause investor to take investments to other countries.

“A decrease in production levels or ability to purchase raw materials as a result of the introduction of excise tax will result in reduced profits for the supply chain players in the non-alcoholic beverage sector.

“What is not realized by many is that excise begets high production costs which in turn adversely affect production levels and intimately results in dwindling profits.

“This will grossly impact the small and emerging business owners in the non-alcoholic beverage sector,” he said.
