  • Tuchel needs to be calm, he shouts a lot – Hudson-Odoi

Tuchel needs to be calm, he shouts a lot – Hudson-Odoi

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi says his relationship with manager Thomas Tuchel is now rock solid.

Within two months of the German’s arrival, their relationship was in the spotlight when Tuchel brought him on at Southampton at half-time before hauling him off 31 minutes later.

“That situation was very strange to me,” says Hudson-Odoi. “I’ve never been in a situation like that, so when it happened in my head I was just like, there was no need for me to sulk or go into a strop or give attitude because that’s not the person I am. Everything was be calm, be happy, be relaxed.”

It is an open secret that Tuchel wants more from Hudson-Odoi. You only have to watch his histrionics from the bench to know that. It is also increasingly apparent that Tuchel is slowly being won round by the 21-year-old.

“The manager is a very good guy, tactically he’s amazing,” said Hudson-Odoi to the Daily Mail. “He knows how to get the best out of each player, sometimes it might be in a way that you don’t want to hear it or he might be shouting in a way that you think: ‘Why are you shouting so much on the touchline?’

“Sometimes it’s hard to understand and you think to yourself: ‘Can you calm down a little bit and stop shouting as much?!’

“But he’s trying to get a message across and make it clear to you that: ‘Listen, I want this from you because I want to win the game. I’m not just going to shout at you, I’ll shout at everybody to make sure we get the best out of everybody. And we win the game. Or get the 100 per cent out of everybody’.

Hudson-Odoi admitted the German manager knows how to get the best out of each player

“It’s definitely a different sort of manager compared to the others ones I’ve been under. He’s always on his toes, always up and ready to make a gesture or talk. Just very vocal.

“It’s good on the pitch but sometimes it’s like: ‘Can you quieten down a little bit, not shout as much?’ But it’s OK.”

  • Man Utd will have another manager next season – Neville

Man Utd will have another manager next season – Neville

Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville has said Ralf Rangnick will not be appointed permanent manager of the club at the end of the season.

The German replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis in December.

However, Rangnick has an agreement with United to move into a consultancy role after his six-month contract expires.

Having overseen a rough path, which still sees the Red Devils in the Premier League top four, there have been calls for him to be given the role.

But Neville insists a new manager will be in place ahead of the 2022/2023 season.

He told Sky Sports: “I don’t think he gets the job at the end of the season, come what may, now. I think maybe there was a feeling at the beginning that it could happen; that isn’t going to happen. Manchester United will have a new manager next season.

“I think he will have a say in who gets the job because what he has got is a real good view of the characters, personalities, performance levels and training levels of the current group of players so he is in a strong position to advise.

“He is probably in the strongest position to advise because he is having day-to-day contact with them. He is seeing how they cope with disappointment, how they cope with atmospheres, how they cope with big games, how they cope with training; can they meet the demands of the club? Have they got the quality?”

Why I turned down Everton job, Wayne Rooney reveals

Derby manager Wayne Rooney has explained turning down the chance to interview for the Everton job.

Rooney came through the youth ranks at Everton and celebrated a year in charge of Derby County last month as they beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Pride Park.

“I have been here now for over three years as player and manager and you build relationships up with players, first of all as team-mates, then as manager, and with staff,” Rooney told the Mail on Sunday.

“Everything I am asking of those players in terms of hard work, honesty, trust, commitment…if I was just to turn round and say ‘I have had an offer, I’m off’, I honestly couldn’t do that to the players and the staff.

“I could see once Benitez was sacked and my name was getting linked with Everton that the staff were down and they were scared that if I left, where did that leave the club.

“I know they have been looking to me to try and help rebuild this club.

“I spoke to the staff and said, ‘I am stood in front of you and I am with you. Whatever is being said out there, I am with you’. I think that was big for them.”

Gareth Southgate signs new contract as England manager

Gareth Southgate has signed a new contract to extend his stay as England manager to 2024.

The 51-year-old’s deal was set to expire after 2022 World Cup but he and his assistant Steve Holland have signed a two-year extension through to December 2024.

It is reward for the great strides England have made under Southgate, who later this month will celebrate five years in charge of the national team.

During that time the former Middlesbrough boss has led the Three Lions to a first World Cup semi-final since 1990, a third-placed finish in the Nations League and the final of the European Championship for the first time.

“I am delighted that Steve and I have been able to extend our stay in our respective roles.

“It remains an incredible privilege to lead this team. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark (Bullingham, Football Association chief executive).

“John (McDermott, technical director) and the board for their support – and of course the players and support team for their hard work.

“We have a great opportunity in front of us and I know they and the fans are all excited about what this squad could achieve in future,” said Southgate.

Bullingham admitted over the summer that it was the FA’s intention to offer Southgate a new deal.

Southgate has been at pains to stress since this summer’s European Championship that he would not discuss the matter until qualification for the World Cup was secured.

That goal was achieved this month as England sealed top spot in Group I in emphatic fashion with a 10-0 win in San Marino, coming days after a 5-0 victory against Albania.

  • EPL: Antonio Conte named new Tottenham manager

EPL: Antonio Conte named new Tottenham manager

Premier League club, Tottenham have appointed former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte as their new manager until summer 2023.

The London club sacked Nuno Espirito Santo on Monday after just 17 games, with Spurs eighth in the table.

Tottenham says there is “an option to extend” 52-year-old Conte’s deal with them.

“I am extremely happy to return to coaching, and to do so at a Premier League club that has the ambition to be a protagonist again,” said Conte.

The Italian returns to London after winning the Premier League in his first season at Chelsea (2016-17) and the FA Cup in his second before being sacked in 2018.

He then led Inter Milan to their first Serie A title in 11 years before leaving the club in May.

Conte had been in charge for two years and Inter said it was a mutual decision to end his contract with one year remaining.

The former Juventus and Italy coach was then in talks with Tottenham in the summer about becoming Jose Mourinho’s successor.

But negotiations were halted before Spurs appointed ex-Wolves boss Nuno at the end of June, with the Portuguese boss, 47, lasting just four months.

“I can’t wait to start working to convey to the team and the fans the passion, mentality and determination that have always distinguished me, as a player and as a coach,” said Conte.

“Last summer our union did not happen because the end of my relationship with Inter was still too recent and emotionally too involved with the end of the season, so I felt that it wasn’t yet the right time to return to coaching.

“But the contagious enthusiasm and determination of [Tottenham chairman] Daniel Levy in wanting to entrust me with this task had already hit the mark.

“Now that the opportunity has returned, I have chosen to take it with great conviction.”

Conte’s first game will be at home against Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League on Thursday before Spurs play at Everton in the league on Sunday.

“His track record speaks for itself, with vast experience and trophies in both Italy and England,” said Tottenham managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

“I know first hand the qualities Antonio can bring to us, having worked with him at Juventus, and look forward to seeing his work with our talented group of players.”

What we want in next manager – Tottenham chairman

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has set out the criteria for their next manager.

Tottenham sacked Jose Mourinho as manager in April and appointed Ryan Mason as interim boss in the week leading up to their Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City.

Spurs striker Harry Kane has reportedly told the club he wants to leave

but Levy says “that central to our ambitions is a successful football team” as the club “focus” on appointing a new manager.

“We are acutely aware of the need to select someone whose values reflect those of our great club and return to playing football with the style for which we are known – free-flowing, attacking and entertaining,” said Levy.

Burna Boy did not receive money from Wike – Manager

Burna Boy’s manager and mother, Bose Ogulu has stated the Grammy award winner did not receive N10m from Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State had during a homecoming ceremony for Burna Boy, after his Grammy win, promised to gift him land and money as an appreciation for winning the Grammy Awards.

He also promised to gift other singers that performed that night N10m each.

However speaking with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on Rubbing Minds, Bose Ogulu noted that it was an honour for Burna boy to be hosted by the Rivers government but that he was not paid to perform.

She said it would have been a sham if any other state had hosted the singer before Rivers

”The first thing about that event was that money was not paid. It was paid to everyone else but Burna. Everyone else who came to perform was paid, but him, because they were honouring him. He was not being paid to be there.

”It is only a bastard, my people say that refuses honour in his father’s house.”

Burna Boy won his first-ever prestigious Grammy award at the 63rd Grammy Award ceremony.

The African Giant was nominated in the category for the Best Global Music Album category for his album Twice As Tall.

The singer, who is a nominee for a second consecutive year, beat four others including the Malian band, Tinariwen to clinch the award.

Rooney loses first game as Derby manager

Wayne Rooney suffered defeat in his first match in permanent charge of Derby as relegation rivals Rotherham won 1-0 at Pride Park and Norwich opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the Championship table.

The former Manchester United and England captain was officially confirmed as the Rams’ manager on Friday, having held the post on an interim basis since the departure of Phillip Cocu in November.

But his reign started inauspiciously as Jamie Lindsay’s late strike sent County second bottom of the table.

Norwich remain well on course for an immediate return to the Premier League thanks to a fast start away to Cardiff.

Grant Hanley put the leaders in front after just four minutes, nodding in at the far post after a flick on from a corner.

And it was 2-0 after 20 minutes as Todd Cantwell rounded off a slick counter-attack by slotting into an empty net following a smart save from Alex Smithies.

Joe Ralls gave Cardiff hope by thumping into the bottom corner from 12 yards after 65 minutes but the hosts were reduced to 10 men five minutes later when Marlon Pack was shown a second yellow card and slipped to a fourth successive defeat.

Second-placed Swansea can close the gap at the top back to four points with victory later at Barnsley.

Bournemouth missed the chance to go second after a 1-0 loss at home to Luton.

The Cherries’ task was made more difficult when Jefferson Lerma was shown a straight red card after 26 minutes for catching Tom Lockyer in the face with a stray arm while competing for a header.

Bournemouth pushed to overcome their numerical disadvantage but Luton capitalised as the hosts tired to take the lead after 67 minutes.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall curled the winner into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

Watford returned to the playoff places with a 2-0 win over Huddersfield.

Tom Cleverley gave Watford a 54th-minute lead by capitalising on indecisive defending from Huddersfield.

Alex Vallejo attempted to pass the ball back to Ryan Schofield, who hesitated as Cleverley closed in and beat the goalkeeper to the ball to slide in from six yards.

Joao Pedro made sure of the points 10 minutes later, tapping in at the far post from Kiko Femenia’s cross.

Sammy Ameobi struck twice as Nottingham Forest secured back-to-back wins for only the second time this season with a 3-1 victory against Millwall.

Birmingham manager Aitor Karanka enjoyed a successful return to the Riverside as Scott Hogan struck to earn the Blues a 1-0 win and prevent Middlesbrough from moving into the play-off places.

A 1-1 draw did little to aid Stoke and Blackburn’s playoff hopes.
