EPL: Maddison shines as Tottenham sink Manchester United

Fit-again James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario starred as Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 to end their long winless run at home and expose the problems facing Ruben Amorim and his injury-hit squad.

Maddison – who had missed the last five games – pounced when Andre Onana parried Lucas Bergvall’s first-half shot to give Spurs the lead while Vicario, on his first appearance since November 23, repeatedly denied Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.

In the battle of the Premier League’s two biggest underperformers this season, it was Spurs who looked like they could finally be on an upward curve as key players return from the treatment room after months of injury issues. They celebrated ending a seven-game wait for a league win on their patch and a third win over United across all competitions this term. It’s the first time since 1989/90 they’ve done that.

Spurs are now up to 12th after back-to-back wins in the Premier League for just the second time this season – they also beat Brentford and United consecutively in September.

Amorim’s side had their chances – most glaringly when Garnacho blazed over when unmarked in the box and Joshua Zirkzee nodded wide – but out of possession were regularly stretched open.

With Amad Diallo likely out for the season, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro sidelined, and Victor Lindelof surrounded by teenagers without any Premier League experience on the bench, Amorim’s alternatives were severely limited. He didn’t make a sub until the 90th minute, underlining the point.

United languish 15th in the table and are in desperate need of a spark if they are to make a success of a season in which the FA Cup and Europa League – which also features Spurs – have become their priority. But a significant shift in their performances and results doesn’t appear imminent.

  • Ten-man Man United flush Arsenal out of FA Cup

Ten-man Man United flush Arsenal out of FA Cup

Altay Bayindir was Manchester United’s unlikely hero as the holders held out for over an hour a man down to knock Arsenal out the FA Cup on penalties after a feisty 1-1 draw at the Emirates on Sunday.

United’s stand-in goalkeeper saved a penalty from Martin Odegaard in normal time and then denied Kai Havertz in the shootout as the wasteful Gunners had another day to forget in front of goal.

Bruno Fernandes had fired the visitors into the lead early in the second half before Diogo Dalot was sent-off on the hour mark for a second bookable offence.

Gabriel Magalhaes quickly levelled for Arsenal, but they wasted a host of chances to win the tie in 90 minutes and were made to pay.

United were perfect from the spot as the much-criticised Josua Zirkzee stroked home the winning penalty in front of the jubilant travelling support.

Defeat is another hammer blow to Mikel Arteta’s attempts to end a five-year trophy drought for Arsenal, who also lost the first leg of their League Cup semi-final 2-0 to Newcastle on Tuesday.

  • Manchester United slump to heavy Bournemouth loss

Manchester United slump to heavy Bournemouth loss

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United staggered into Christmas on the back of a chastening 3-0 Premier League loss at home to Bournemouth on Sunday.

A year on from securing their first victory at Old Trafford, Andoni Iraola’s impressive Cherries triumphed by the same scoreline as they inflicted the biggest blow of the Portuguese head coach’s short reign.

Dean Huijsen became the latest player to capitalise on United’s lax set-piece defending to score the opener.

Justin Kluivert penalty and Antoine Semenyo strike sealed a stunning win that brought boos from the home fans at full-time.

The result leaves the Red Devils marooned in 13th and marked an alarming drop in performance and spirit from last Sunday’s 2-1 derby win at Manchester City. Meanwhile, Bournemouth soared to fifth.

  • Tottenham edge Manchester United 4-3 in thrilling League Cup win

Tottenham edge Manchester United 4-3 in thrilling League Cup win

Dominic Solanke’s brace helped Tottenham Hotspur edge a rip-roaring League Cup quarter-final game with Manchester United by a 4-3 win.

The win ensures that Tottenham are still in hunt of a first trophy since 2008.

Spurs were in cruise control when Solanke rifled home his second in the 54th minute to add to his first-half opener and Dejan Kulusevski’s effort 46 seconds into the second half.

Tottenham’s back-up goalkeeper Fraser Forster pressed the self-destruct button, though, as his two errors set up a nervy finale.

First Manchester United substitute Joshua Zirkzee tapped in after Forster’s pass out from the back had been intercepted before Amad Diallo blocked his clearance to make it 3-2 with 20 minutes left.

Ange Postecoglou’s men were teetering on the brink of collapse at this point, but captain Son Heung Min scored directly from a corner with two minutes left despite protestations from keeper Altay Bayindir.

It ensured Jonny Evans’ stoppage-time header was a mere consolation as Spurs march on towards the semi-finals.

The loss left Ruben Amorim to pick the bones out of the third defeat of his short tenure.

  • Rashford leaving Man United may reignite his hunger for goals-Keane

Rashford leaving Man United may reignite his hunger for goals-Keane

Roy Keane believes leaving Manchester United could do Marcus Rashford the “world of good” as he fears the forward will never regain his hunger at Old Trafford.

Rashford’s future appears to be in the balance after the 27-year-old, a product of United’s youth system, was left out of the Manchester derby.

United won 2-1 at Manchester City on Sunday, with Rashford telling journalist Henry Winter on Tuesday that he was “ready for a new challenge and the next steps”.

“I don’t mind what he said. I think it’s spot on,” former United captain Keane told the Stick to Football podcast.

“Sometimes a deal just works for everybody. It’s been going on for a year or two now, there’s obviously a bit of talent in there, he’s been at the club since he was a kid.

A change would probably do him the world of good, for him and his team and his family. Just go and play, maybe go abroad or whatever it might be.”

Rashford’s current contract at Old Trafford runs until 2028 and although he has been linked to several other clubs, United manager Ruben Amorim is keen for the England forward to stay.

But Keane said: “I always think if you lose that hunger, it is hard to get it back.

“Forget about the few bob (pounds) he’s earned over the years — and listen, good for him — but we know, the great players, it’s nothing to do with that.”

Keane added that leaving United could revive Rashford’s “real hunger” for on-field success.

“I think there’s a good chance he might get it back with a change of a club and scenery, a new country, a new league, whatever, but I don’t think he’ll get it back at United.”

Amorim, talking to reporters ahead of Thursday’s League Cup quarter-final at Tottenham, urged Rashford to “speak with the manager” rather than air his grievances publicly.

Rashford has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for the club since making his senior debut in 2016.

However, he has lost form over the last 18 months with United and was also axed from England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Rashford has scored just 15 goals in 67 appearances since signing a lucrative new contract 18 months ago, with speculation over his future increasing in recent days.

The forward, who was absent from training on Monday through illness, is set to miss the League Cup quarter-final at Spurs.

Amorim is keen to keep Rashford but he admitted he would have handled the situation differently when he was a player.

“If this was me, probably I will speak with the manager,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “But, guys, let’s focus on Tottenham. Tottenham is the most important thing.”

  • I need two years to prove myself – Amorim

I need two years to prove myself – Amorim

Ruben Amorim has given himself two years to prove himself as Manchester United manager.

The former Sporting CP coach is now the sixth manager in 11 years at Old Trafford.

Amorim said: “In two years you will understand if I am the right man to be in this process.

“In two years you can understand if you want to continue on this path or you want to change.

“I know if you are at Manchester United you have to win games, so I will not tell you I need a lot of time.”

He also said ahead of Sunday’s debut against Ipswich: “Call me naïve but I believe I am the right guy in the right moment. I truly believe I am the right guy.”

BREAKING: Ruud van Nistelrooy quits Manchester United

Ruud van Nistelrooy has quit his position as the interim head coach of Manchester United. Ruud van Nistelrooy quits the position following the arrival of Ruben Amorim as Man U’s head coach.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Manchester United confirmed on its website on Monday that Ruud van Nistelrooy has left the club.

“It was a beautiful moment. To come back to the club and I’ve started working, and then doing the four games, all at home, getting some good results and some good goals.

“To close it down with this, it’s special. My dad was here, my son. So it was a fantastic moment,” Ruud van Nistelrooy said.

Ruud rejoined the English Premier League club in the summer and took charge of the team for the past four matches as interim head coach.

“Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend. We are grateful for his contribution and the way in which he has approached his role throughout his time with the club. He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford,” a statement by the club reads.

It was gathered that Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel have also departed.

“We wish them all well for the future. We will confirm the full men’s first team coaching composition in due course,” the statement added.

Recall that Manchester United had earlier announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.

Amorim joined Manchester United on Monday 11 November. He will be at the club until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year.

Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.

Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.

Ruben Amorim has been confirmed as Manchester United’s new head coach and will take charge of the Premier League club on November 11.

The deal will last until June 2027, with an option for a further year.

The 39-year-old will start work with the Red Devils on Nov.11, having overseen the Portuguese champions’ three remaining matches before the international break.

United confirmed Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue as interim manager until Amorim’s arrival.
