Ralf Rangnick confirms new position at Manchester United

Manchester United interim coach, Ralf Rangnick has confirmed he will remain at the club despite having Ten Hag as new manager.

Recall that the gaffer is being sought after by the Austrian football Association to become the national team head coach.

Rangnick has confirmed he would remain at Manchester united as a consultant with the English clubside.

Report of the German’s new job with Austria emerged on Thursday evening prior to their 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

He is set to take charge of the Austrian national team after being offered the job.

The report generated plenty of concern among United fans, who are worried the interim boss would not fulfil his pre-agreed plans to move into a consultancy role when new manager, Erik ten Hag takes charge in the summer.

“I can also confirm that I will definitely continue at the end of the season with my consultancy role,” Rangnick said.

“I didn’t say I would be a big part of things moving forward but we have definitely agreed now about the content and also the time of my consultancy role.

“So far Erik and I haven’t spoken but this will hopefully and probably happen in the future. I am more than willing and happy to help change things for the better.

“It would leave space for another job, that’s what we agreed to start with in November last year.”

Manchester United legend, Sir Alex Ferguson has offered a first public reaction to the appointment of Erik ten Hag as the new manager at Old Trafford.

Caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick will hand control over to departing Ajax coach Ten Hag at the end of the season, but will likely do so with United out of the Champions League.

Ferguson – appearing on RTE Racing in his capacity as co-owner of horse Clan des Obeaux – broke his silence on the appointment of Ten Hag and revealed his hopes for the latest man to take the top job at Old Trafford.

Asked if Ten Hag could be the man to turn United’s fortunes around, he replied: “I hope he does well, the club needs someone to get in control and I hope he does well.”

Ferguson is understood to have taken a backseat during the long process to appoint Ten Hag, with Football Director John Murtough taking the lead of the search for the first time.

Rooney rejects assistant coaching job at Man Utd, gives reasons

Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney has rejected offers to work as assistant coach to newly employed coach Erik Ten Hag in next season’s campaign.

Rooney has said he would remain as chief coach of relegated Derby County

Recall that Erik Ten Hag was officially confirmed as the new Manchester United gaffer after the 4-0 drubbing of the club by Liverpool in the English Premier League (EPL)

He is expected to resume work at Old Trafford at the end of the season when he will take over from interim manager, Ralf Rangnick.

Erik Ten Hag in conjunction with officials in Manchester United are at the moment assembling the rest coaching staff.

The personnel who remained from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure are set to leave the club, with Ten Hag aiming to make a completely fresh start at the Theatre of Dreams.

Rooney, United former captain and all-time record goal scorer, was on the list of the candidates for a position in Ten Hag’s team.

However, Rooney has made it clear that he would only leave Derby county for the number 1 position at any club.

Rooney now looks set to remain in charge of the Rams for next season, although there speculations that Burnley has contacted him for the vacancy position left by the sacking of Sean Dyche

Meanwhile report has it that Ten Hag’s assistant at Ajax are being tipped to join him to resume work at Manchester United starting from next season’s campaign.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson predicts Liverpool to defeat Man Utd

Arsenal legend, Paul Merson predicts Liverpool will defeat Manchester United tonight

Liverpool will host Man United in a Premier League tie on Tuesday night at Anfield.

Manchester United defeated Norwich city 3-2 at the theatre of dreams in their last EPL encounter to improve their hopes of advancing to top 4.

And Merson believes a Red Devils’ win against Liverpool is almost impossible.

According to him, if Ralf Rangnick’s side manages to get a draw against the Reds, it will be their best result of the season.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Soccer Special panel, Merson said, as quoted by We All Follow United: “Manchester United go to play Liverpool tomorrow, and I don’t give them one bit of a chance. I don’t give them 1% of a chance.”

He added, “As a team, they went 42 games without losing away from home and they are going to Liverpool tomorrow and if they drew 0-0, it would be the best result of the season.”

  • Ronaldo’s hat-trick rescues Manchester United against Norwich

Ronaldo’s hat-trick rescues Manchester United against Norwich

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 50th club career hat-trick dug Manchester United out of a hole against lowly Norwich City as the under-par Red Devils won 3-2 at Old Trafford.

The 37-year-old’s treble was his second in his past three Premier League appearances.

It took him to 21 goals for the season, going through the 20 barrier for a 16th consecutive campaign.

Ronaldo moved to 99 Premier League goals in his career, and Manchester United could only thank him for sparing them a potentially embarrassing afternoon.

He put Manchester United two up early on, but Norwich hit back through Kieran Dowell and Teemu Pukki.

But the former Real Madrid and Juventus star lashed a free-kick winner through the grasp of Tim Krul in the 76th minute.

David de Gea sprinted from his line to expertly block Pukki’s attempted dink over the goalkeeper in the third minute, and Norwich would soon regret failing to take that golden chance.

Ronaldo saw a fizzing 20-yard shot saved by Krul in the seventh minute.

But seconds later the Manchester United man did better, with Anthony Elanga dispossessing Ben Gibson in the penalty area and squaring for an easy close-range finish.

Manchester United kept pressing against opponents who at that point appeared ripe to be picked off.

Ronaldo got their second in the 32nd minute when he headed a corner-kick from the right by Alex Telles past Krul.

Norwich surprisingly got one back in first-half stoppage time when Pukki’s cross from the left was nodded in at the far post by an unmarked Dowell.

Incredibly, having been outplayed for so long, Norwich got level after 52 minutes.

That was when Pukki tucked past De Gea after Dowell played him in and the striker stayed just onside.

Manchester United lacked coherence in attack and were out of sorts throughout.

De Gea had to save well from Milot Rashica to keep the hosts on level terms, but then up stepped Ronaldo from 25 yards to save the day.

  • Manchester United fans stage peaceful protest against Glazer family, players

Manchester United fans stage peaceful protest against Glazer family, players

A group of Manchester United fans have staged a peaceful protest against the Glazer family, who own the club, as they unfurled banners against both the club’s ownership and the players.

The protest, which took place at the AON Carrington Training Complex on Friday morning, stopped the team from training until after 2.00pm.

A group of around 30 fans – dressed all in black and with their faces covered – turned up and unfurled banners against both the club’s ownership and the players with messages stating “Not fit to wear the shirt” and “Glazers out”.

The protest was largely peaceful, although fans did express their frustration towards a few of the players as they tried to make their way into the complex, including second choice goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

None of them made into the training ground and they were eventually dispersed by the arrival of the police.

The fans were part of the 1958 Group, who plan to protest at tomorrow’s home game with bottom of the table Norwich City by arriving 17 minutes late to mark the 17 years the club has been under the Glazers’ ownership.

When asked about it in his press conference, interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, had sympathy for how the supporters are feeling, but urged them to get behind the team once they get into the stadium.

“We all know football is a game of passions and emotions,” said the German. “I can understand our supporters are disappointed with our standing in the table and our performance at Everton, at least after we conceded the first goal.

“But I still believe our supporters are the best in England and as long as they do that protest in a peaceful way and support the team in the stadium, they have a right to express their opinion.”

This protest comes almost a year to the day since United fans stormed the training ground in response to the proposed European Super League, when then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came outside to meet them and listen to their frustrations.

But this latest episode is the perfect example of the growing anger and disillusionment at how United are performing on and off the pitch, compared with rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

“There was a small and peaceful protest outside the Carrington training ground today,” said a United spokesperson. “We respect the opinions of fans and remain committed to strengthening our engagement with them.”

Meanwhile, Nemanja Matic has announced he will leave Manchester United this summer despite having one season left on his contract at Old Trafford.

The Serbia midfielder, 33, informed the club he will not be part of their new era when Erik ten Hag is expected to take charge following Rangnick’s spell as interim manager.

Matic is set to be the first of the departures at United this summer with Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani out of contract and leaving unless new deals are brokered.

It will bring an end to five years at United for Matic, where he did not win a trophy but reached the final of the Europa League and FA Cup. He arrived for £40 million in 2017 in the same summer United snatched Romelu Lukaku from under Chelsea’s noses, which played a role in the clubs negotiating a fee.

“After a great deal of thought, I have decided that this season will be my last with Manchester United,” said a statement by Matic. “I have informed the board, the manager and the players of my decision.

“It has been a huge honour and a privilege to play for this great club. A big thank you to the fans for their unwavering support. I will now give everything until the end of the season to help my team-mates finish as strongly as possible.”

Another protest is expected at Old Trafford on Saturday before United’s Premier League match against Norwich.

United have won only three of their past 12 matches in all competitions – losing 1-0 at Everton last Saturday – and are guaranteed to fall short of last season’s final tally of 74 points.

  • Everton weakens Manchester United’s chance of Premier League survival with 1-0 win

Everton weakens Manchester United’s chance of Premier League survival with 1-0 win

Manchester United’s push for top-four has sufferered setback, as Everton moved four points clear of relegation zone, following their 1-0 win over their guest (Manchester United).

Anthony Gordon scored the critical winning goal which breathed life into their hopes of Premier League survival – and dented Manchester United’s Champions League aspirations.

Gordon’s shot deflected off Harry Maguire’s back (27) beyond David de Gea to provide the hosts with the slice of good fortune that has deserted them so often in this torrid campaign.

United, who are close to appointing Erik ten Hag as their new manager, struggled to find their rhythm thereafter as the returning Cristiano Ronaldo’s late booking for petulance typified another disjointed, lethargic display under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

He may have had the final say when he collected Maguire’s header across goal in stoppage time but his instinctive shot was kept out by the excellent Jordan Pickford.

Everton boss, Frank Lampard said: “I’m very proud. Pressure times. The reality of the situation. At Goodison we have been good. We are getting clean sheets at home. When we come together with fans and players we are hard to beat here.

“It starts with us. The crowd were great but they could switch off if they see people not working. When you are not at your best you have to fight through it. You might give a ball away but the only way to get that back is to fly in and make a tackle.

“Beautiful football can come later on. I have ambitions for this club to stay up, play well, but in the position we are in, fighting comes first and foremost.

“We have missed Delph. It goes unnoticed. If we have one or two defensive midfielders out it’s tough for us as we don’t have that there. He gave us a sense of calm. He was great today.

“It’s one win. We should have got a result in the week but didn’t. You have to keep going. It’s not easy when you wake up the next morning after Burnley. My job first and foremost is to lift everyone. They are a good bunch these players.”

Manchester United boss, Ralf Rangnick, on his part, pointed out that if you do not score a single goal in 95 minutes, the team members have to be disappointed.

He said: We had a good start and should have created more chances out of that domination. Then we concede a deflected shot and lost a bit of our composure.

“The second half we were trying to add creativity with substitutions but we didn’t always take the right decision.

“We had to do something. We needed a goal and we decided to bring Mata and more verticality with Elanga. They were defending with their players in the last 35 minutes. We didn’t find the right player at the right moment. We didn’t have enough players in the box when we played crosses.”

“It’s not only creativity. I think we had enough creative players on the pitch. It’s also about being physical enough in the final third, being physical and trying to score a goal. We didn’t have enough players in the box.”

On United’s top-four hopes, he added: “It’s difficult. As long as we don’t win our own games it doesn’t make sense to hope for good results from the other teams.

“Fred had some muscular problems on his hip flexor. We already are without McTominay. Without both defensive midfielders it isn’t good for us.”

The imminent announcement of Ten Hag could well be viewed as an unwanted distraction for Rangnick, but he said: “I don’t think this should be an excuse. We are Manchester United. We have lots of international players. There shouldn’t be an alibi. There will be a new manager next season. If this is announced now or in 10 days it shouldn’t have an impact.”

After self-imploding at Burnley in midweek, Frank Lampard’s side re-established a four-point gap on Burnley in the final relegation position ahead of the weekend’s remaining games as United suffered another blow to their flickering hopes of a top-four finish.

All five of Lampard’s victories have come on home soil, and it is here at his famous old ground – at its most visceral, obstructive and unwelcoming on Saturday – where Everton’s best hope of staving off a first relegation in 71 years reside.

Lampard’s future had been brought into question following Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat at Burnley having lost eight of his opening 12 games in all competitions since he replaced Rafael Benitez at the end of January, when the club were 16th and four points above the relegation zone.

The former Chelsea midfielder said he “knows the rules” regarding the short shelf life of a manager not picking up results and he was indebted to Pickford in the opening 12 minutes as Marcus Rashford twice forced the England goalkeeper into fine saves to his left.

But for all of United’s early pressure, it was the hosts who took the lead in the 27th minute with their first real sight at goal.

A move down the left started by Allan and involving Richarlison was followed by the ball being cut back to the edge of the area by Alex Iwobi and Gordon’s sidefoot effort took a deflection off Harry Maguire, wrongfooting David de Gea before rolling into the net.

The goal roused the Everton players, as well as the crowd, as the momentum swung dramaticall.

Fred looked to be struggling and was withdrawn in the 37th minute as Paul Pogba was introduced. Everton would see out the half, and Pogba’s first contribution was to hack at Everton’s goalscorer Gordon right in front of referee Jon Moss to be cautioned.

Everton had barely led at home for a sustained period of time since beating Leeds 3-0 on February 12 given Iwobi’s winner against Newcastle came in the 97th minute – but here they were disciplined and picking their moments to sense a second with Gordon snapping into a challenge on Alex Telles but unable to pick out Richarlison with his low cross.

Only once, right at the end did time stand still as Ronaldo collected Maguire’s header back across goal for one last show of defiance from Pickford as he saved ice hockey-style, lifting up a big right glove.

Goodison poured with emotion at the sound of the final whistle. Never has the Spirit of the Blues been sung from all corners with such gusto.

  • Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes craves Mata’s jersey number 8

Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes craves Mata’s jersey number 8

Portugal and Manchester United playmaker, Bruno Fernandes, has revealed he craves the number 8 shirt at the club.

Although, the number 8 shirt is currently being worn by Juan Mata, Fernandes has made it clear he doesn’t have plans to hijack it from him.

Mata is the current holder of the shirt, while Fernandes has been forced to don the number 18 since he arrived in January 2020.

This revelation was let out by the Portugal international when asked by a fan on Twitter during a question and answer session as to whether he would change his squad number to eight next season.

To which the playmaker responded: “I hope to get it one day…but for now I hope to have my brother @juanmata8 close to me.”

There is every chance Fernandes will get the number eight shirt next season, as Mata’s current contract at Old Trafford ends this summer and there has been very little talk of a renewal.

Meanwhile, Fernadez has just put pen to paper in a renewed 4-year deal for Manchester united.
