We should have scored more, says De Bruyne after Dortmund win

Manchester City Kevin De Bruyne admitted his side should have scored more after securing a narrow 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday.

De Bruyne opened the scoring in the first half before Marco Reus grabbed a vital away goal for Dortmund with his 84th-minute strike.

Phil Foden bagged a crucial late winner in the 90th minute, but City still have plenty of work to do in the quarter-final second leg next week.

“We saw the way they played,” De Bruyne told BT Sport. “They played really well with the ball. It causes some problems sometimes. I think in the first half we had a little bit of difficulty finding the chances but in the second half we created a few.

“We probably should have scored a little bit more but obviously when they came back to 1-1, that was a little shame but it happens. I think the reaction was really good so to get the win is good. We know 2-1 is a tricky score but at least we are ahead for the second leg.”

City head coach Pep Guardiola added: “Dortmund are strong, a good quality with the players they have and the quality it is difficult to do what we want to do, but 2-1 and we have a good chance next week.

“We are going to watch the game. We will adjust a few things to go there and try to win the game. Next is Leeds and then we go to Germany to try and win the game.

“Borussia Dortmund is a typical club from the Champions League. We have one more game there and with the result 2-1 we will try to score the goals there to win.”

  • PSG already discussing personal terms with De Gea

PSG already discussing personal terms with De Gea

Ligue 1 giant PSG are already discussing terms with Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, it has been revealed.

In the last 24 hours, it’s emerged in England that De Gea has accepted he will be sold this summer and his agents are already drumming up interest across Europe.

Quatro says PSG sports chief Leonardo has responded positively and contract terms have already been mentioned.

Leonardo is willing to bring De Gea to Paris if he agrees to take a cut on his current £400,000-a-week wages at United.

De Gea would arrive to replace Keylor Navas, despite his heroics for PSG this season.

  • Man Utd coach responds to Haaland transfer talks

Man Utd coach responds to Haaland transfer talks

Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would not comment on whether the Red Devils will be making a move for Dortmund striker Erling Haaland but did suggest that there are only a certain number of teams who are capable of signing the forward.

United tried to sign the Norwegian last season but he opted for a move to the Bundesliga instead and while the club remain interested in adding the forward to their squad, Solskjaer was giving little away.

Solskjaer told a press conference ahead of the game against Brighton: “Well, I’m focusing on the next two months and whatever happens in the world of football there is only so many places anyone can go to.

“As I said, we focus on the ones who are here and even though I worked with Erling it’s not right for me as Man United manager to talk about Erling. I can talk about him as an ex-coach of his, but he will make his own mind up.”

  • Iheanacho grabs brace as Leicester City outclass Manchester United

Iheanacho grabs brace as Leicester City outclass Manchester United

Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho scored two goals as they beat Manchester United 3-1 in their FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday to set up a last-four clash against Southampton.

The Foxes took the lead following a horrendous error from Manchester United’s Fred, whose backpass became a through-ball for Iheanacho.

The Nigerian collected it and rounded the goalkeeper before firing home in the 24th minute.

Manchester United struck back seven minutes before half-time as Mason Greenwood rifled Paul Pogba’s centre into the net.

But they never got to grips with Leicester City in midfield and they went behind again early in the second half.

Youri Tielemans surged at Manchester United’s soft centre, bursting through and brushing off a less-than-convincing challenge from Fred before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.

Jamie Vardy could have brought his seven-game goal drought to an end but he pulled his shot just wide of the near post when clean through on goal.

His selfless running, however, was instrumental in creating space for his Leicester City teammates.

Manchester United’s woeful defence was exposed again in the 78th minute as Iheanacho was left completely unmarked at the far post.

He headed home Marc Albrighton’s free-kick to seal the victory and send his side into the semi-finals.

“We worked really well in training to get ready for this game. Tactically we worked hard.

“We really felt ready to go and we passed the ball very well and got in open spaces and got the runs and the goals,” Iheanacho told reporters.

“I am really happy playing alongside Jamie (Vardy). It’s helping me a lot, creating space and getting the shot in behind. So, I hope we can keep working hard together,” he added.

Chelsea will take on Manchester City in the other last-four tie, and both semi-finals will take place at Wembley on the weekend of April 17 to April 18.

  • Eric Bailly plans to snub Man Utd contract offer

Eric Bailly plans to snub Man Utd contract offer

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly is ready to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Bailly plans to snub his new United contract offer after being left out of the Europa League win over AC Milan.

The Ivory Coast central defender was upset and furious at being overlooked again by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having played in the first leg last week. Bailly confirmed to pals he will tell United he has no interest in signing the 12- month extension he was due to agree next week.

A dressing-room insider told The Sun: “Eric has had enough now.

“He simply doesn’t feel wanted or respected by the manager.

“Eric doesn’t believe he gets any answers or explanation about the way he is treated and feels he is the easy option to leave out.

“It’s a real shame because Eric always tells us he loves the club and feels the respect of the fans.

“But it’s got to the point this week where he has to think about his future.”

  • Man Utd announce new jersey sponsor to replace Chevrolet

Man Utd announce new jersey sponsor to replace Chevrolet

Premier League giant, Manchester United’s new shirt sponsors TeamViewer is worth a massive £235m.

The Manchester Evening News says the five-year partnership has been described by United sources as the ‘biggest shirt-only’ deal in the Premier League and the largest sponsorship of any kind secured by a sports team over the past year.

Germany-based TeamViewer will replace Chevrolet at the start of the 2021-22 season on the front of United shirts, ending the American car manufacturer’s seven-year run as United’s shirt sponsors. It is also understood United are in discussions over a new training kit sponsor.

The TeamViewer logo is blue and white, and will be modified to just white on United’s shirts.

United sources have refused to give a specific figure but suggested it is comparable with the £47million-a-year deal Barcelona agreed with Rakuten in 2016.

  • De Gea a real problem for Man Utd – Scholes

De Gea a real problem for Man Utd – Scholes

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes feels David de Gea has become “a real problem” for the Red Devils.

A 3-1 victory over Newcastle has ensured that the men from Old Trafford remain the closest challengers to Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

They were, however, unable to keep a clean sheet once again, with questions being asked of an experienced performer between the sticks.

The former England international told BT Sport of De Gea, with the Spain international suffering more nervy moments in a game that saw him beaten by a strike from Allan Saint-Maximin that bounced up and into the roof of his net: “Yeah, [the clean sheet record is] not good enough.

“We mentioned it before the game, I think that is the biggest weakness in this team.

“David again, so sloppy, it’s becoming a real problem, having the confidence in your goalkeeper, and short corners, United had one out for two or three corners, this is the one where David again, can you catch that? He punches it into a really bad area.”

  • Diallo close to first Man Utd start – Solskjaer

Diallo close to first Man Utd start – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Amad Diallo is close to making his first start for the Red Devils after the winger made his debut as a substitute in the 4-0 win against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

The 18-year-old joined United from Atalanta in January and has been playing for the club’s reserves while he adapts to his new surroundings.

Diallo featured for the final seven minutes of the Europa League last 32 first-leg match against Sociedad after replacing Mason Greenwood and Solskjaer says he will be given a bigger role in the near future.

“He’s getting closer and closer to his minutes by the day,” Solskjaer told BT Sport. “That is why we felt towards the end when we were 3-0 up to go and let him enjoy his first 10 minutes for the club.”

  • Manchester United crush Southampton 9-0

    Manchester United crush Southampton 9-0

Manchester United crushed nine-man Southampton 9-0, the biggest win in Premier League history.

Rampant United scored four times in the first half after Southampton’s teenage midfielder Alexandre Jankewitz was dismissed in the second minute at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side hit five more after the break, tying them with Leicester’s 9-0 win at Southampton in 2019 and United’s own 9-0 victory against Ipswich in 1995.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s goal opened the floodgates and Marcus Rashford bagged United’s second.

Jan Bednarek’s own goal made it three for the hosts before Edinson Cavani added the fourth.

The goals kept coming as Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay netted before Bruno Fernandes’ penalty after Bednarek was sent off.

Martial and Daniel James scored in stoppage-time to complete an incredible display by United.

“We’ve been waiting for them to show the magic and it was a night for them to go and enjoy it. We’ve not had many times where we could just enjoy the second half,” Solskjaer said.

“You get lots of confidence from a performance like this, scoring goals is always good for a team.”

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl added: “It was a stupid foul from the young lad (Jankewitz) and kills everything. What can I say? It’s horrible.”

After the frustration of their shock defeat against Sheffield United and dour draw at Arsenal, the demolition job was a much-needed boost to their title bid.

United’s first victory in three league games means they are behind leaders Manchester City only on goal difference.

Pep Guardiola’s team have two games in hand, including one at Burnley on Wednesday.

Jankewitz, making his first Premier League start, saw red after just 82 seconds for an ugly challenge that left stud marks on McTominay’s thigh.

United took advantage of their numerical superiority in the 18th minute when Luke Shaw swung a cross to far post and Wan-Bissaka bundled his shot past Alex McCarthy from close range.

Rashford doubled United’s lead seven minutes later with a composed finish from Mason Greenwood’s cross.

It was only Rashford’s second goal in his last 10 appearances in all competitions.

Rashford, subjected to vile abuse on social media recently, claimed the assist for United’s third in the 34th minute when his cross was turned into his own net by Bednarek.

Cavani scored United fourth with a thumping header from Shaw’s cross in the 39th minute.

Martial ended his eight-game goal drought when he lashed home from close range in the 69th minute.

McTominay rifled home from 25 yards two minutes later and Fernandes struck from the spot in the 87th minute after Bednarek fouled Martial.

There was still time for Martial to score again before James capped the rout.

  • Bruno Fernandes dismisses Player of the Year call

Bruno Fernandes dismisses Player of the Year call

Manchester United ace Bruno Fernandes has dismissed talk of winning Player of the Year.

The midfielder has been a huge success since arriving at Old Trafford in January for £55m from Sporting Lisbon and is a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side that has emerged as potential title challengers.

“If we win trophies, it is the most important thing,” Fernandes told MUTV.

“Of course, it’s good for a player to win individual awards and I will never say I don’t want to be the best player in the league or I don’t want to be the PFA Player of the Season. I want to be [that] but I want to be [that] if the team wins trophies.

“If the team does win trophies, for me, it’s the same. For me, the most important thing is to help my team-mates to also be Player of the Season. That’s the most important thing because, if someone from the club is Player of the Season, it means that we do very, very well this season.”
