What Ander Herrera told Cavani before Man Utd move

PSG midfielder Ander Herrera admits he spoke to Edinson Cavani about life at Manchester United.

Cavani signed for United yesterday after coming off contract at PSG in June.

And former United midfielder Herrera told El Larguero: “He asked me for advice.

“I told him it’s one of those teams that you can’t say no to. The pity is that you will not be able to enjoy the fans. Old Trafford is unique.”

And regarding the potential of the Premier League, he commented that “you realise the power it has. You are left speechless with investments like that of Leeds, which is a recently promoted one.”

Man Utd contact former Spurs boss to replace Solskjaer

Manchester United have reached out to Maurizio Pochettino following Sunday’s 6-1 loss to Tottenham, reports the Daily Star.

The club is not prepared to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just yet, but Ed Woodward is making contingency plans if the club does opt to go in a new direction.

Those plans would include Pochettino, who has not taken a job since leaving Spurs last year as he awaits the perfect opporutnity.

  • Why I signed Cavani – Solskjaer

Why I signed Cavani – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks Edinson Cavani can provide ‘energy, power and leadership’ to his squad after the striker completed a move to Old Trafford.

The 33-year-old striker has signed a one-year deal with an option for another year after his seven-year spell with PSG ended this summer.

And with experience in France and Italy with Napoli, Solskjaer thinks Cavani will bring plenty of positivity to Old Trafford.

He said: “Edinson is an experienced ultimate professional who always gives everything for his team. His goalscoring record for club and country is fantastic and we are delighted to sign a player of his calibre.

“He’ll bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he’ll bring goals. He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies at almost every club he has played for, and he still has so much more to give at the highest level.

“The opportunity for our young players to learn from one of Europe’s top goalscorers over the last 10 years is fantastic and it will really benefit them going forward.

“Edinson knows exactly what it takes to succeed and we are all looking forward to seeing him make an impact at Manchester United.”

Man Utd, Sancho reach agreement for January move

Manchester United have told Jadon Sancho they’ll be back in three months’ time to try again for the Borussia Dortmund star.

United finally gave up on getting the Borussia Dortmund star at the weekend as the Bundesliga club refused to budge on their valuation.

United had offered £70million up front rising to £100m – but Dortmund wanted more up front and £108m overall.

While Sancho, 20, wanted the move, he did not want to force the deal by publicly announcing his desire to leave, says The Sun.

A public transfer request could have jeopardised his relationship with Dortmund if the deal did not go through.

He has told close pals that he is convinced he will still end up being a United player with a deal revived in the New Year.

The club have made it clear to the player that they will not turn their back on the move despite the problems they have encountered with Dortmund this summer.

Tottenham humiliation: Today is my worst day as Man Utd manager, player – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says their 6-1 hammering at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League (EPL) on Sunday is his worst day at the club.

It was Manchester United’s joint worst loss in the Premier League era —- equalling their 6-1 defeat by Manchester City in 2011.

“It’s a horrible feeling, the worst day I’ve had as a Manchester United manager and player,” said the Norwegian after his side, reduced to 10 men for the last hour, were ripped apart by Jose Mourinho’s Spurs.

“I’ve been part of big defeats before and we’ve bounced back.

“So, we’ve just got to let the boys go away on international duty, find their mojo themselves and the others that are going to stay here, we’ve got to help them.

“After a result like this, you need to clear your mind and head and look forward,” said Solskjaer.

The defeat, coming before Monday’s transfer deadline, is sure to spark even more criticism of Manchester United’s failure to significantly strengthen Solskjaer’s squad during the summer window.

Solskjaer was a member of the Manchester United squad which won the UEFA Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup under Alex Ferguson in 1999.

But he said he was not going to use the situation to shield himself from criticism.

“If it’s a different shape, mentality, I don’t know, but it will be different. We can’t accept performances like this.

“I hold my hands up, I’m in charge and I’m responsible for this,” he said.

Manchester United’s defending was shambolic as they trailed 4-1 at the break.

“Sometimes you make mistakes. That’s part of life and we made too many mistakes in one game of football and that shows in the result against a very good football team,” Solskjaer said.

“They are a team full of quality and we got punished almost every time we made a mistake.”

  • Mourinho’s Tottenham score six to humiliate Man Utd

Jose Mourinho returned to Manchester United and humiliated his old club as Tottenham came from behind to record a famous Old Trafford win.

Son Heung-min and Harry Kane scored twice, with Tanguy Ndombele and Serge Aurier also on target as 10-man United suffered a defeat on a par with their 6-1 thrashing at home by Manchester City in 2011.

It meant it was not only the heaviest defeat since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took temporary charge in December 2018, but also the largest United have suffered since Ed Woodward took over as executive vice-chairman in 2013.

The result leaves United 16th in the Premier League, with newly promoted Fulham and West Brom the only clubs with a worse goal difference. Only West Brom have conceded more than their 11 goals.

United were completely outplayed, even before they were reduced to 10 men midway through the first half when Anthony Martial dragged his hand across Erik Lamela’s face in reaction to an elbow in his neck.

In contrast, Tottenham moved up to fifth after emerging from a packed schedule of five games in 11 days in three competitions with a creditable four wins and a draw.

  • Edinson Cavani set to join Man Utd

Edinson Cavani set to join Man Utd

Former Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is due to fly into England on Sunday to join Manchester United.

The Uruguay international, 33, has been in talks with United and although there is no deal yet, it is growing increasingly likely Cavani will join on what could be a two-year contract.

Cavani is out of contract having left Paris St-Germain at the end of June.

He left PSG under a cloud following a disagreement with Neymar and feels he has more to give to European football.

United have been given a positive impression about the player’s desire to play for the club and providing face-to-face talks confirm that impression, a deal will be done.

It is understood the package on the table does not go beyond the current pay structure, so United feel any comparisons with Alexis Sanchez, who was given a £350,000-a-week contract which he failed to come close to justifying, would be wide of the mark.

They also feel Cavani’s age is not an issue and his experience will help develop the younger players in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

It is understood talks over signing Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho have not progressed, although club sources refuse to say whether United’s attempt to land the 20-year-old England international is over.

United are braced for some criticism but feel Cavani’s record justifies their move for him.

He has scored a total of 341 goals in 556 club games. Included in that are a club record of 200 goals in 301 appearances for PSG. He has also scored 50 goals in 116 internationals for Uruguay.

In addition, senior United officials have not forgotten the impact Zlatan Ibrahimovic had on the club when he joined them as a 34-year-old in 2016.

Cavani’s availability was one reason why club sources said privately they were calm about their situation on Friday, when many supporters took to social media to express their disappointment at how the transfer window was unfolding.

If the deal does go through, one of Cavani’s first games could be against PSG, who are United’s opponents in their first Champions League group game at the Parc de Princes on 20 October.

  • What Barca is demanding from Man Utd over Dembele deal

What Barca is demanding from Man Utd over Dembele deal

Manchester United will need to accept a hefty wage bill if they wish to take on Barcelona attacker Ousmane Dembele.

The £215,000 a week France forward has emerged as a possible alternative to key target Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund.

The Sun says United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to wrap things up quickly with the transfer window due to close on Monday.

Barca are looking to raise funds after being hit hard by the coronavirus and with a move for Manchester City’s Eric Garcia in their sights.

They would like to offload Dembele, 23, in a permanent deal but United are reluctant.

Yet Barca may be willing to let him move on loan, providing a club agrees to pay his salary in full.

  • Why joining Man Utd brought me to tears – Fernandes

Why joining Man Utd brought me to tears – Fernandes

Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes admits signing for the Red Devils brought him to tears.

Fernandes has revealed he cried tears of joy after signing for Manchester United, in which he fulfilled a dream stretching back to his early childhood.

He wrote for The Players’ Tribunal: “One Christmas, my brother and I went to Switzerland to stay with my dad.

“He was living there for work at the time. This was before the Internet made it so easy to buy kits from all over the world.

“In Portugal, you couldn’t always find Premier League kits, and if you could, they were really expensive. So one day, we went into a Nike shop and our dad let us pick out two jackets.

“This was a big decision, you know? My brother chose a yellow Barcelona one because of Messi. And for me … well, I am proud to say that even back then I was a man of sophistication.

“I chose Man United, of course.”

He continued: “When I found out from my agent that it was really going to happen, obviously my mind went back to that day in Switzerland, picking out the jackets with my brother.

“But there were so many steps along the way that nobody understands — so many difficult moments that only my family experienced with me.

“When I knew for sure that the deal was happening, the first thing I did was tell my wife and daughter the news, and I couldn’t help it … I just started crying.

“Tears of joy. Tears of happiness. Tears of memories.”

  • Man Utd deny interest in Arsenal Maitland-Niles

Man Utd deny interest in Arsenal Maitland-Niles

Manchester United have refuted claims they are interested in Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

The Red Devils have not managed to recruit a right winger in the summer transfer window thus far.

With the deadline fast approaching, they are considering alternatives to primary target Jadon Sancho.

But according to the Manchester Evening News, Maitland-Niles is not an option.

The Arsenal man can play fullback and as a winger, but it appears United do not want him for either position.

They want Sancho or Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele for the right wing slot, while Alex Telles from FC Porto is the key left back target.
