Pre-season Games: Ten Hag slams players for losing to Rosenborg

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was left fuming with his players after a 1-0 defeat to Rosenborg in a pre-season match on Monday.

Noah Holm scored the only goal of the game with the last kick.

Ten Hag has now informed his squad that they are far from meeting his standards.

Despite most first-team members being on vacation following Euro 2024, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, and Casemiro were among those who played.

Ten Hag told MUTV: “The result is not secondary. Of course, it’s pre-season, but at Man United, there is a standard: you win games, definitely, not lose games. If you can’t win games, don’t lose like we did in the end, in the last second of the game. The performance is more important, and the performance was below standard.”

“The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza,” Ten Hag said on Dutch TV channel NOS.

“They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me.”

Ten Hag also revealed that new United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe spoke to former Bayern Munich and Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, about the job.

“Manchester United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager,” he added.

“INEOS took their time. They are new in football, it’s normal to reflect on the season. It’s no secret that they talked with multiple candidates.”

A new contract is being discussed ahead of next season.

First, the 58-year-old will refuse to allow Jadon Sancho back into the first-team squad unless he apologies

Sancho was loaned to Borussia Dortmund after effectively branding Ten Hag a liar last season, with the expectation he will leave this summer.

Ten Hag will also push back against attempts from technical director Jason Wilcox to dictate his team’s playing style.

Another demand will be to renew the contract of forwards coach Benni McCarthy.

McCarthy revealed last month that he is out of contract in a few weeks, but expressed a desire to stay at the club.

EPL: United legend, Rio Ferdinand reveals when Erik Ten Hag will be sacked

Rio Ferdinand the Manchester United legend has posited that manager Erik ten Hag will be dismissed by the club even if he secures an unexpected FA Cup victory at the end of the month.

Manchester United lost 19 games across all competitions, ended the 2023/24 season on 8th position and are now hoping to win the FA Cup as a means to get a continental slot next season.

Ferdinand expressed doubts about Ten Hag’s future, predicting that the club’s co-owners Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS will review and possibly terminate his position following the FA Cup final.

“Win or lose, I don’t think Ten Hag will be there next season,” Ferdinand stated on his FIVE YouTube channel.

“I believe the club will look elsewhere. I don’t think winning the FA Cup changes anything in the eyes of INEOS. This is just my assumption, I haven’t spoken to anyone there.”

Diallo, Hojlund rescue under-fire Erik ten Hag against Newcastle

Amad Diallo’s rocket and Rasmus Hojlund’s fine finish secured Manchester United and under-fire Erik ten Hag a much-needed win against fellow European hopefuls Newcastle in their final home match of a season to forget.

The injury-ravaged Red Devils have lost 19 in all competitions this term and knew defeat on Wednesday would set unwanted records, as well as end any hope of continental qualification through the Premier League.

But as United’s new decision-makers Ineos consider how to turn the club around, there was a glimpse of what could have been – and perhaps could yet still be – under Ten Hag as they ran out 3-2 victors against Newcastle.

It was far from perfect but Kobbie Mainoo put United into a deserved lead midway through a first half that saw Anthony Gordon’s penalty appeals rejected and a Dan Burn header cleared off the line by Casemiro.

Gordon drew Newcastle level early in the second half and Sofyan Amrabat’s block sent an Alexander Isak strike looping onto the bar as Ten Hag’s team wobbled, only for Diallo to laser the hosts back ahead.

Recently criticised substitute Hojlund drove home a third as the clock wound down, meaning Lewis Hall’s wonderful stoppage-time strike was only a consolation.

The win puts eighth-placed United level on 53 points with Newcastle in seventh, but they are well behind on goal difference heading into the final day of the season.

Kai Havertz was sent down the right, with Casemiro now playing him onside, before cutting the ball into the box. Leandro Trossard arrived from the opposite wing and tapped home.

Trossard’s goal proved to be the needed tonic Arsenal needed to continue to fight on till the very last day of the season.

All effort by the Red Devils to score in the game met a brick wall in the Gunners defense.

Their ever-impressive defence nullified United’s young forward line kept them at bay and earned a clean sheet without heading out of second gear.

The victory means that Mikel Arteta’s boys stand a chance to win the title provided City with a game in hand falter on the road to the final day of the season.
