Rashford steps up campaign for free meals for “struggling” children

Manchester United and England forward Marcus Rashford has stepped up his campaign for the government to fund free meals for struggling children through the summer school lockdown.

The 22-year-old football star, who said it was the kind of support he himself had to rely on as a boy, has taken a prominent role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The role was to raise awareness and funds for those families who are “existing on a knife’s edge” and struggling to feed their children.

Partnering with charity FareShare UK, Rashford has helped to raise around 20 million pounds (25 million dollars) to supply meals across the country.

He is now urging the government to continue its food voucher scheme given to children who are eligible for free school meals.

“As a family, we relied on breakfast clubs, free school meals, and the kind actions of neighbours and coaches,” the player wrote in a letter to the government posted on Twitter.

“Food banks and soup kitchens were not alien to us. I recall very clearly our visits to Northern Moor to collect our Christmas dinners every year.”

As a black man from a low income family in Manchester, Rashford wrote that he could have been just another statistic.

Instead, due to the support of his mum and his community, the Manchester United forward is known for the goals he scores and his England caps.

He is now worried about those children slipping through the net, who had previously been given a hot meal at school.

Of the 1.3 million children who are registered for free school meals in England, Rashford said a quarter had not received any support since schools closed in response to COVID-19.

“Do you know how much courage it takes for a grown man to say, `I can’t cope’ or `I can’t support my family’? Men, women, care-givers, are calling out for our help and we aren’t listening,” he said.

Paul Scully, a junior business minister, said government was spending money on summer activities and local authority hardship funds to reach those families who needed support in the summer.

EPL: Solskjaer has brought back club values – Schmeichel

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel says manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought back the club’s “values”.

It’s not just on the field where Schmeichel feels Solskjaer’s influence has had a big impact.

He told CNN: “He’s brought all these values in. The players now know them,” the Danish former goalkeeper added.

“If you don’t share our values, there’s no place for you here. So you have to live up to his values.

“He’s bringing in his own culture and you can see it and it’s there and it’s brilliant.”

Fati, Barcelona in agreement over €100M Man Utd offer

Ansu Fati is eager to stay with Barcelona.

It emerged this week that Manchester United had failed with a €100m offer for the teenager.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu fielded the offer – and immediately rejected it. He later confirmed the bid on a video call with his board.

Meanwhile, Sport says super agent Jorge Mendes has approached Fati’s camp to assure them that he can find him a new club if he wishes to leave Barca this summer.

However, Fati’s family have made it clear he sees his future currently with the Blaugrana.

Man Utd offered Madrid outcast James

Real Madrid attacker James Rodriguez has been offered to Manchester United.

The Colombian star, 28, was once valued at around £100 million by his current club Real Madrid.

But The Sun says the Spanish giants fear they may struggle to get even half of that as his contract at the Bernabeu ticks down to its final 12 months.

United have been long-term admirers of James – who spent two years on loan at Bayern Munich before returning to Madrid last summer.

However funds are likely to be limited this summer and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently weighing up how best to spend his cash.

I thank Shanghai and Solskjaer – Ighalo

Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo has admitted relief over his loan deal.

United and parent club Shanghai Shenhua have reached an agreement which will see the Nigerian remain at Old Trafford for the year.

“I was very afraid that this would not happen,” Igalo told Sky Sports.

“Shanghai Shenhua wanted me to go back. They believe in me and know what I am capable of. I want to say thank you to the leadership of Shanghai for meeting me. Also, thanks to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for his perseverance. I will soon be 31 years old, playing for Manchester United is simply unbelievable for me.

“Soon I will finish with football, because of this I am doubly glad that I got to the ‘Red Devils’. I want to enjoy every second I spend here.”

Ighalo admits he might return to Super Eagles

Manchester United striker, Odion Ighalo, has admitted he is considering a return to the Nigerian national team.

Ighalo retired from international after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he finished as top scorer.

One of the reasons he gave for his decision, was the stress of travelling between China and Nigeria.

Ighalo, however, moved to England in January, joining United on loan from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua.

This week, the 30-year-old extended that deal until January 2021.

The turn of events has made Ighalo to reconsider his availability for the Super Eagles.

“I am still in contact with Gernot Rohr and Amaju Pinnick, and they congratulated me on my loan deal,” Ighalo told Brila FM.

“I am still thinking about returning to the national team, but right now I want to concentrate on my club career.

“I left the national team because of the distance between Nigeria and China, but now that I am in Manchester and just like life and in my career, you never can tell.”

  • I cried after learning about Man Utd move – Fernandes

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has revealed he started crying when he was told about the chance to move to Old Trafford.

The Portugal international officially joined the Red Devils from Sporting in January after repeatedly being linked with a transfer over the past year.

Having grown up watching Cristiano Ronaldo make his name in the Premier League with United, Fernandes admits he was overwhelmed upon hearing his dream of doing the same was coming true.

“You know, I will say the truth that I was scared,” Fernandes said in an Instagram Live interview with Mario Djurovski. “It was a dream [come true] but it was a big dream.

“For me, playing in England and for Manchester [United] was the highest part of my career. To play in the Premier League, for one of the best teams in the world.

“When I received the call saying: ‘Bruno, you have the chance of moving to Manchester’ I called my wife, my brother, my sister, my mother and just started crying.

“But I was crying through happiness. I fought all my life for this, for this top club. The chance was here and I needed to take it with both hands, to follow my dream.

“My family knew since the beginning that I wanted to be a footballer, they knew my big dream was to be in the Premier League and to play for Manchester.”

Ighalo aiming to lift Man Utd after loan extension

Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo hopes to lift Manchester United “higher and higher” after extending his loan deal at the Premier League club from Shanghai Shenhua until the end of January 2021.

Ighalo, whose initial loan spell from the Chinese Super League side was set to end on May 31, scored four goals in eight games for United before football was suspended due to COVID-19.

“I am buzzing and ready to go … the last few days have been difficult as there have been different talks about it (future).

“… Now I have extended my loan, it makes it more even clear and I am committed.

“I am here until January ending. I just want to work hard and enjoy it, support the team and do whatever I can to make us go higher and higher,”he said.

United have nine games left to play in the league and are fifth on 45 points, three points behind Chelsea, with the campaign set to resume on June 17.

They have all but sealed progress to the Europa League quarter-finals after a 5-0 win over LASK Linz in the first leg of their last-16 fixture.

“I can’t wait for the league to start again.

“We did mention today there could be 15-16 games left before the season is finished… we’re working hard and I believe we’re going to do great.

“Everybody’s looking good. Running, working hard and playing football. Little two-a-sides and doing some ball work. Everyone is getting better and better,”Ighalo added.

  • Man Utd in shock move for Raheem Sterling

Man Utd in shock move for Raheem Sterling

Manchester United are pondering a shock move for Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling.

The Independent says Sterling is a name the club’s analytics department ‘have been working on’ as they settle on their summer targets.

At this stage, Jadon Sancho is the priority.

United, supposedly, ‘will do anything’ to get the Borussia Dortmund star, who has been in electric form over at the Westfalenstadion this season.

But the report suggests the Red Devils are interested in signing Sterling from their fierce rivals, with the player’s future at the Etihad uncertain.

As things stand City are banned from playing in the Champions League for the next two years.

They have, however, appealed UEFA’s punishment – which was for breaching financial fair play regulations.

If City are unsuccessful, though, United will reportedly go after Sterling with the club convinced he’d be a shrewd signing.
