Mane scores 100th Liverpool goal in Palace win

Liverpool remain unbeaten in the Premier League this season after Sadio Mane scored his 100th goal for the club in a victory against Crystal Palace.

Jurgen Klopp’s side created numerous chances against a resilient Palace before Mane pounced on a rebound at the back post in the first half.

Mohamed Salah doubled their lead with just over 10 minutes remaining when he smashed home a flick-on from a corner, before Naby Keita’s late curling strike made it 3-0.

Liverpool were wasteful in the first half as Diogo Jota fired over the bar from a few yards out in a glorious position, while Thiago and Jordan Henderson were also denied by keeper Vicente Guaita.

Palace had started brightly – hitting the post twice in as many minutes as Liverpool failed to clear their lines in the box – but the hosts’ persistence eventually paid off.

In the end it was a comfortable victory that capped a good week for Liverpool at Anfield, following their dramatic 3-2 win over AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.

And it means they go top of the table with four wins from their opening five games, while visitors Palace remain outside the top 10.

EPL: Jota, Mane seal Liverpool victory over Burnley

Goals from Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane ensured Liverpool made it two Premier League wins from two with victory over Burnley at a packed Anfield.

Jota opened the scoring in the 18th minute, heading past Nick Pope from Konstantinos Tsimikas’ cross for his second goal in as many games.

Mohamed Salah had the ball in the back of the net eight minutes later, but it was ruled out by the video assistant referee as the Egyptian was offside in the build-up.

Sean Dyche’s side were looking for back-to-back league wins at Anfield for the first time since 1897 after ending Liverpool’s 68-game unbeaten home run last season.

But Burnley’s brave defence were finally beaten again as Jurgen Klopp’s side doubled their lead through a superb second-half Mane strike.

It was a promising all-round performance by Liverpool as captain Jordan Henderson returned to the starting XI after missing the season opener, with teenager Harvey Elliott also impressing on his first Premier League start.

  • Klopp not worried about Mane relationship after Old Trafford snub

Klopp not worried about Mane relationship after Old Trafford snub

Jurgen Klopp insists he is completely relaxed about his relationship with Sadio Mane after the forward snubbed post-match congratulations from his Liverpool manager.

A late decision was made in training to start Diogo Jota instead of the Senegal international for the 4-2 win over Manchester United.

Although he did come off the bench in the second half, Mane was in no mood to welcome an approach from his club manager after the final whistle.

Klopp played down the suggestion his player had disrespected him.

“I cannot make a bigger story of it as it is,” said Klopp, who had not spoken to the player prior to Friday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to West Brom.

“Football is an emotional game and everyone expects from us to control our emotions always, but it doesn’t work out always. That’s the case.

“It happened to me as a player, it happened to other players when I was their coach.

“Do you want these things to happen? No. But it’s not the first time in my life and I’m afraid to say it won’t be the last time.

“If somebody shows me five million times respect and one time not, what is then more important?

“If you had seen me as a player, what I did out of emotion it was insane — and I’m a completely normal guy. But it happened to me.

“We will talk about it, then it will be sorted. That’s all.”

While one of his forwards may be sulking for a day or two, another is riding a wave of confidence.

Mohamed Salah brought up his 30th goal of the season at Old Trafford.

The Egypt international scored his 124th goal for the club in his 200th appearance — faster than Liverpool’s all-time leading goal-scorer Ian Rush.

Only Roger Hunt, Gordon Hodgson and Robbie Fowler have scored more in their first double-century.

Klopp likened his “goal-scoring machine” to Robert Lewandowski, arguably currently the best centre-forward in the world.

He signed Lewandowski for Borussia Dortmund before the Poland international moved to Bayern Munich.

“There’s Robert Lewandowski, who I signed for a different amount of money years ago who had an incredible development from a different level,” Klopp said.

“With Mo, from the guy who scores from time to time and is a really good football player to this goal-scoring machine is a massive development.

“He is an outstanding signing, but for sure the way he developed, the way he treats himself, the game preparation, the training preparation, training attitude and all these kind of things, that’s exceptional.

“That’s a real role model and he deserves all that. Absolutely.”

  • Did the ref have something against Mane? – Klopp

Did the ref have something against Mane? – Klopp

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp took aim at ref Felix Brych after their 3-1 Champions League defeat at Real Madrid.

The Reds have it all to do to keep their European dream alive after falling to a 3-1 loss in the Spanish capital following a brace from Vinicius Junior and a goal from Marco Asensio.

And following the final whistle, a furious Klopp accused his German compatriot Brych of making “personal decisions” against his forward Sadio Mane.

Klopp was particularly frustrated after Mane appeared to be hauled down near Madrid’s penalty area by Lucas Vazquez, who was the last man, only for the referee to wave play on.

And just 27 seconds later, Madrid went 2-0 up on the night through Asensio, who kept his composure to chip the ball over Alisson and put it into an empty Liverpool goal.

“The situation with Sadio, I’m not sure what the ref did tonight,” Klopp said. “It seemed like it was sort of personal.

“I told him after the game, I just thought he was unfair with Sadio. He didn’t lose us the game but you need just an OK ref.”

  • Mane to miss Liverpool’s games against West Ham, Southampton over injury

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane is set to miss Liverpool’s next two Premier League games against West Ham United and Southampton, Jürgen Klopp has confirmed.

Mane sustained a muscle issue during Liverpool’s win at Wolverhampton Wanderers last Thursday night.

Klopp revealed the issue is not a serious one; however, it will rule him out of the clash at the London Stadium on Wednesday night and possibly Saturday’s Anfield meeting with Southampton.

“Sadio will not be involved for West Ham and probably not for Southampton,” Klopp said on Tuesday. “After that he should be then fine.

“The week we have then after that is for him perfect to get back on track.

“He has a small muscle tear, which is serious enough to keep him out. We were lucky with the injury as well, so it was not that serious.

“But of course, when you have three games in a week then that means he is out for these three games.”

Liverpool will stretch their lead over second-placed Manchester City to 19 points if they beat West Ham.
