Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao loses presidential election in Philippines

Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has finished a distant third in the just concluded Philippines presidential election.

Pacquiao picked up less than four million votes, or 6.8 percent of votes counted.

The poll result showed that the former Pilipino boxer finished third behind winner Ferdinand Marcos Junior, who got more than half the votes, and runner-up Leni Robredo.

Although, pre-election survey showed the boxer stands no chance of winning at the polls.

.Critics of the boxer had accused him of being a high-school dropout who is lacking in intellect and barely turning up to sessions in Congress and the Senate, which had raised questions about his ability to run the country of 110 million people.

Prior to the election, Pacquiao had fancied his chances of emerging winner until election result started trickling in.

“I believe there are more poor people than rich ones,” Pacquiao told reporters on Monday as he voted in his southern home province of Sarangani.

“We want to assure them that the majority of the poor will unite to show the rich that there are more people suffering in poverty in this country,” said Pacquiao, who lives in an enclave of billionaires and foreign ambassadors when he is in Manila.

Pacquiao, who had previously served in the country’s congress ruled out a sporting comeback if he lost the presidential election.

“I’m already turning 43 years old, so it’s enough for me, I’m done,” said the father of five.

Pacquiao said he would instead grow fruit on a 20-hectare (49-acre) property in Sarangani.

“It’s also quiet (there), I like that,” he said.

Pacquiao is deeply admired across the archipelago for his rise from desperate street kid to one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of all time.
  • Pacquiao camp denies Khan claims over Saudi Arabia bout

Manny Pacquiao has not signed a contract to take on Amir Khan in Saudi Arabia later this year in spite of claims that a deal has been agreed for the bout, the Filipino’s publicist has said.
Khan, who beat Australia’s Billy Dib in Jeddah on July 13 to win the WBC international welterweight title, said on Tuesday that he had agreed a deal to fight Pacquiao in Riyadh on Nov. 8.
The Briton told British media the clash with Pacquiao would happen even if the 40-year-old were to lose to American Keith Thurman in Las Vegas on Saturday.
“Manny has not signed any contract. As far as I know it has not even been discussed,” Pacquiao’s publicist Fred Sternberg told the BBC.
“He has been in training camp for the past eight weeks, four in the Philippines and four in the U.S., and he hasn’t met with Amir Khan during that time.”
Sternberg said he did not know what prompted Khan to make the claims.
“That’s a question you need to ask Amir Khan,” he said.
Khan had been slated to fight eight-division world champion Pacquiao two years ago in the United Arab Emirates, but no agreement could be reached.
Pacquiao, one of the sport’s most decorated fighters, has a record of 61 victories, seven defeats and two draws in a career spanning 24 years.
Khan has 34 wins and five defeats.

Boxing: I want a rematch, Pacquiao challenges Mayweather

Manny Pacquiao has challenged five-weight world champion Floyd Mayweather to a rematch, calling for the American to come out of retirement, BBC reports.

Pacquiao, 40, lost to Mayweather in 2015 by unanimous points decision, but has since regained a version of the world title.

He previously said he “cannot retire with peace of mind” without a rematch.

“Get back to the ring and we will fight again if he wants,” Pacquiao said after he beat Adrian Broner on Saturday.

The Philippine great retained his WBA world welterweight title with a convincing unanimous points win over the American in Las Vegas.

“If he wants to come out of retirement, then announce it and challenge me. I’m a champion and I don’t pick any opponent,” Pacquiao said after the fight, which 41-year-old Mayweather attended.

“My message is I’m still active and if he goes back to the ring and wants to challenge me, I’m a champion.

“I’m just waiting to see who will challenge me, who will challenge [for] my belt.”

The 2015 fight between the two multi-weight world champions was billed as the ‘Fight of the Century,’ but after a tame defeat, which saw Mayweather add the WBO welterweight title to his WBC and WBA titles, Pacquiao said he had been suffering with a shoulder injury.

Tickets for the bout reached prices of as much as $350,000 (£232,000) and American fans were charged almost $100 (£66) to watch on television, with millions more watching across the world.

Mayweather made a return to the sport on New Year’s Eve, taking just 140 seconds to beat Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition boxing bout worth a reported $9m.
