Massive reactions as Marcus Rashford arrives Barcelona, to adorn jersey number 14

Marcus Rashford’s move from Manchester United to Barcelona has provoked huge interest, with fans and media across the UK fascinated to see whether the forward can reignite a stalled career that once looked so promising.

And there’s a similar level of intrigue on the shores of the Mediterranean, with Barca fans anxious to see what kind of player is arriving in the Catalan capital.

To gauge the mood, BBC Sport has spoken to three Barcelona-based journalists and asked for their views on the England international’s arrival.

Here are the thoughts of Jamie Easton Gombau (La Liga TV presenter), Jordi Pons (Spanish TV commentator) and Toni Padilla (journalist for local newspaper Ara).

Barca’s forward line is already well stocked, with veteran marksman Robert Lewandowski, teen sensation Lamine Yamal and rejuvenated Raphinha all coming off brilliant seasons, while further depth comes from Spain internationals Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres. So where does Rashford fit in?

Jamie Easton Gombau: We know from Deco, Barca’s sporting director, that they wanted another winger – partly to rest Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, and also to play Raphinha in a different role as a number 10. But Rashford is a joker in the pack because he can also fit as a false nine or striker, which will be even more important this season to give some rest to Lewandowski, considering his age.

Luis Diaz and Nico Williams were the first choices, so Rashford was option C… at least! He’s also the cheapest option which is important because Barca’s financial situation is a long way from being solved.

Toni Padilla: Barca wanted someone who can play mostly on the left side, but also as a striker. Barca’s first idea was to have a younger player, like Williams, but Rashford is still young enough. From a tactical point of view, considering Rashford’s evolution in the last few years, it fits perfectly. But we should remember he’s only here because Nico said no.

Jordi Pons: I remember when Rashford was young and promised so much. He beat defenders, ran up and down the wing, and above all I liked his shot from mid-range.

Sometimes players can lose their way, but I see someone who is willing to drop his salary and try to re-establish himself in a team like Barca. A few years ago, everyone was talking about how great he was, and what a huge career he was going to have. Now he’s got a big opportunity ahead of him to return to that world-class level.

Rashford becomes the first Englishman to represent Barcelona since Gary Lineker left in 1989, and he will look to emulate the success of his predecessor who scored 52 goals in 138 appearances. But does his nationality matter to Barca followers? BBC Sport

  • Rashford leaving Man United may reignite his hunger for goals-Keane

Rashford leaving Man United may reignite his hunger for goals-Keane

Roy Keane believes leaving Manchester United could do Marcus Rashford the “world of good” as he fears the forward will never regain his hunger at Old Trafford.

Rashford’s future appears to be in the balance after the 27-year-old, a product of United’s youth system, was left out of the Manchester derby.

United won 2-1 at Manchester City on Sunday, with Rashford telling journalist Henry Winter on Tuesday that he was “ready for a new challenge and the next steps”.

“I don’t mind what he said. I think it’s spot on,” former United captain Keane told the Stick to Football podcast.

“Sometimes a deal just works for everybody. It’s been going on for a year or two now, there’s obviously a bit of talent in there, he’s been at the club since he was a kid.

A change would probably do him the world of good, for him and his team and his family. Just go and play, maybe go abroad or whatever it might be.”

Rashford’s current contract at Old Trafford runs until 2028 and although he has been linked to several other clubs, United manager Ruben Amorim is keen for the England forward to stay.

But Keane said: “I always think if you lose that hunger, it is hard to get it back.

“Forget about the few bob (pounds) he’s earned over the years — and listen, good for him — but we know, the great players, it’s nothing to do with that.”

Keane added that leaving United could revive Rashford’s “real hunger” for on-field success.

“I think there’s a good chance he might get it back with a change of a club and scenery, a new country, a new league, whatever, but I don’t think he’ll get it back at United.”

Amorim, talking to reporters ahead of Thursday’s League Cup quarter-final at Tottenham, urged Rashford to “speak with the manager” rather than air his grievances publicly.

Rashford has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for the club since making his senior debut in 2016.

However, he has lost form over the last 18 months with United and was also axed from England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Rashford has scored just 15 goals in 67 appearances since signing a lucrative new contract 18 months ago, with speculation over his future increasing in recent days.

The forward, who was absent from training on Monday through illness, is set to miss the League Cup quarter-final at Spurs.

Amorim is keen to keep Rashford but he admitted he would have handled the situation differently when he was a player.

“If this was me, probably I will speak with the manager,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “But, guys, let’s focus on Tottenham. Tottenham is the most important thing.”

Euro 2024: Rashford exluded as Southgate releases 33-man provisional list for England

Manchester United forward, Marcus Rashford has been left out of the Three Lions of England squad to the Euro 2024.

England boss, Gareth Southgate released provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024 on Tuesday with Rashford’s name conspicuously missing on the list.

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Chelsea skipper Reece James were among the other big names missing out on the list which will still  be trimmed to a maximum of 26 before the tournament in Germany begins later in June.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is rewarded for the Eagles’ brilliant end to the Premier League season with his first-ever call up.

Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Liverpool duo Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones are the other uncapped players selected with Southgate short on defensive options.

England face Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 3 and Iceland four days later before jetting off for Germany, where they are one of the favourites to win the tournament.

The array of forwards available at Southgate’s disposal was responsible fpr he omission of Rashford.

This is the first time Rasford wouldn’t be selected for a major international tournament for the first time since the 2014 World Cup.

Rashford has scored just eight times in 42 appearances for his club this season and only recently returned from injury.

Henderson’s move to Ajax in January after a short spell in Saudi Arabia has not done enough to earn the 33-year-old a place.

The same goes for Jadon Sancho despite his renaissance on his return to Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund on loan from United.

Raheem Sterling and Kalvin Phillips were also overlooked despite shining for Southgate in the past at major tournaments.

EPL: Enough of criticisms, abuses – Rashford tells fans

Marcus Rashford Manchester United forward, has expressed displeasure with the way  he has been abused so far this season.

Rashford has struggled to replicate last season’s form that saw him score a couple of goals.

The English Man has scored only eight eight times in 40 appearances this present campaign.

His lack of clinical finishing this season has led to the 26-year-old facing some fire from fans and pundits.

However, when  replying to a post on X, formerly Twitter, the forward claimed the way he has been treated is “absolutely disgusting” and “cruel”, said the level of criticism has become too much.

He wrote: “It is abuse and has been for months. Enough is enough.”

Rashford, who hit 30 goals in all competitions last season, was dropped to the bench by manager Erik ten Hag for two matches following a poor performance in United’s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle in December while also having his off-field behaviour criticised by the Dutch manager.

De Gea’s first save   against Neves from the free-kick was impressive but the second from Jimenez was such a good reaction save.

It was an enthralling afternoon of football  as the Red Devils secured all three points on the day they climbed to the fourth position on the log courtesy of Rashford’s solitary goal.

Wolves showed further signs of improvement under Julen Lopetegui, but did not offer enough in attack to warrant taking something from the game.

EPL: Thierry Henry slams Rashford, says use your brains

France and  Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry, has slammed  Marcus Rashford’s technical abilities after the Manchester United forward missed a glorious chance during their 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils claimed all three points, courtesy of a goal each in both halves from two Midfielders Fred and Bruno Fernades.

However, United could have scored a third, after Rashford cut in from the left. But the England international could only fire straight at Hugo Lloris.

Henry and former United fullback, Patrice Evra, analyzed the action after the game on Amazon Prime.

Henry on Rashford: “You open the goal up. Just finish it. Place it, why hard? Side foot, goal. See you later.”

EPL: Rashford emerges PL Player of the Month for September

Rashford was only called for duty in two games in the month of September as fixtures were postponed due to the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, he played against Leicester City on 1 September and Arsenal three days later but his exploits in those games were immeasurable.

Manchester United were highly impressive in the two games securing maximum points with Rashford proving key in both encounters.

The Manchester United forward scored two goals and assisted Antony’s opener in the 3-1 victory over Arsenal, having played in Jadon Sancho to score United’s winner at Leicester at the start of the month.

His four goal involvements in September – no PL player managed more during the month – were enough for Rashford to see off competition from the likes of Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

It is the second time Rashford has received the accolade. The first time he received it was in January 2019.

Manchester City”s Erling Haaland won it for the month of August while, Rashford on the other  end of Manchester won for September.

  • Rashford speaks on leaving Manchester United this summer

Three lions of England and Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has taken a final decision on his future with the club after speaking with former teammate, Daley Blind about new manager, Erik ten Hag.

Blind was able to convince the forward to stay at Old Trafford.

Recall that Rashford  suffered a disastrous loss of form last season, scoring just five times in 37 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils.

The 24-year-old was said to have concluded plans to dump Old Trafford had interim boss, Ralf Rangnick remained in charge.

And even with Rangnick’s departure, the England international was still unsure over his future at Old Trafford.

Rashford is now excited about the prospect of working with Ten Hag after speaking with Ajax star, Blind.

Blind is said to have told Rashford about Ten Hag’s hands-on nature and the forward was excited.

The Englishman wants to tie down a fixed position and his preference is to play on the left of a front three.
