  • How Marseille convinced Aubameyang to return to Ligue 1

How Marseille convinced Aubameyang to return to Ligue 1

At the age of 36, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has made a return to Olympique de Marseille after a successful season in the Saudi Pro League with Al Qadsiah. The move strengthens Marseille’s already well-stocked attacking line, made possible by the work of Pablo Longoria and Medhi Benatia.

It’s one of the great stories of the Ligue 1 transfer window. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be making his return to the Orange Velodrome in a few weeks’ time against Paris FC on Matchday 2 of Ligue 1, much to the delight of Marseille fans.

Even if the Gabon international’s last season was complicated in terms of the team’s sporting results, his individual contribution inevitably left Marseille with fond memories.

He scored 30 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions, helping OM reach the semi-finals of the Europa League. These figures had not been reached since Didier Drogba in the 2003/04 season (32 goals).

However, Marseille were forced to downsize their squad and Aubameyang was one of the players who had to jump ship because his salary (€7.2 million a year) was deemed too high.

The option of Saudi Arabia then arose, and the player joined Al Qadsiah for €6.5 million. In the Saudi Pro League, the Gabonese player maintained his standards last season, compiling 17 goals in the Saudi league.

Despite his age of 36, the former Arsenal star is proving that he is still competitive and could therefore be a valuable addition to OM’s squad.

Good relationship between Longoria and Aubameyang crucial

A year later, Aubameyang has returned as a free agent after terminating his contract with Al Qadsiah, with one year remaining on his contract. Naturally, he will earn far less than he did in Saudi Arabia (€20 million a year), but more importantly, his salary at OM will be lower than it was during his first spell at the club.

A considerable effort on the part of the player, made possible thanks to his very close relationship with Pablo Longoria. Despite his departure from OM, the two men have always maintained an excellent, friendly relationship, the Spaniard having always appreciated the player’s personality and professionalism. Circumstances forced them to part ways in 2024, but the relationship remained intact.

The two men have remained in contact ever since, and during an exchange between them in June, according to our information, Aubameyang explained to Longoria that he wanted to leave Al Qadsiah this summer.

The Spaniard then asked him if he would like to return to Marseille, to which the Gabonese replied ‘yes’ without any hesitation whatsoever. Marseille, therefore, became the player’s priority if he were to leave Saudi Arabia, and that’s when Medhi Benatia entered the loop.

The Gabon international had to negotiate the termination of his contract with the Saudi club, which he managed to obtain on July 17th, a month after that famous discussion with Pablo Longoria.

Two weeks later, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang landed at Marseille Provence Airport, welcomed by OM fans thanks to the hard work of the club’s director of football.

Known for working day and night, Benatia led negotiations with the striker’s entourage until a total agreement was reached on the terms of his salary (around €4.2 million a year). Another fine lesson in club management from the Moroccan.

  • Man Utd willing to sell Greenwood to Ligue 1 club

Man Utd willing to sell Greenwood to Ligue 1 club

Premier League side Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is eager to move to Marseille this summer.

The striker wants to switch to the Ligue 1 club on a permanent basis after a year on loan at Getafe.

Greenwood is one who United are very keen to sell, as they view him as surplus to requirements.

Per The Mirror, the two clubs are now holding talks about a transfer that would happen before pre-season.

Greenwood has not played for the club since he was charged by the CPS for an incident with his partner.

While the charges were dropped, United then conducted a six-month internal investigation and decided to loan out Greenwood instead of reintegrating him into the first team.

Ligue 1: Lyon manager left bleeding from head after team bus attack

Marseille’s Ligue 1 home match with Lyon was postponed after Lyon boss Fabio Grosso was injured when the team coach was attacked on the way to the ground.

Images on social media showed a bloodied Grosso laid on a stretcher.

According to AFP, the Lyon coach was hit by rocks on its way to Stade Velodrome.

The game between bottom-of-the table Lyon and 10th-placed Marseille was due to kick off at 19:45 GMT on Sunday.

Thousands of fans were already inside the ground when the announcement was made that the game had been postponed.

“We took into account Lyon’s desires for the match not to take place,” said match referee Francois Letexier at a news conference.

French football expert Julien Laurens, writing on X, described it as a “terrible image for French football”.

“What a scandalous mess,” he added. “This is not the first time this has happened (and not the last sadly) but I have no words for this. Unacceptable again.”

  • Classique: Neymar shines for PSG as Mbappe basks in transfer rumours

Classique: Neymar shines for PSG as Mbappe basks in transfer rumours

Neymar’s ninth goal of the season moved Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) three points clear at the Ligue 1 summit following a 1-0 victory over Marseille.

The Brazil international’s strike in first-half stoppage time was enough to settle the Classique as PSG registered 23 shots on goal in a deserved triumph at Parc des Princes.

Marseille had Samuel Gigot sent off for a dangerous challenge on Neymar as the visitors suffered their first away defeat of the season.

Meanwhile, Christophe Galtier’s side stretched their unbeaten league run to 20 matches.

It is their longest streak in the French top-flight since going 21 games without defeat between May 2018 and January 2019.

Marseille had Pau Lopez to thank for keeping PSG at bay early in the first half as he denied Lionel Messi twice inside the opening four minutes.

He also blocking Achraf Hakimi after Kylian Mbappe picked out the full-back less than 60 seconds later.

Lopez then demonstrated wonderful reflexes to tip over Mbappe’s deflected 25-yard effort, before Messi’s fierce free-kick rattled the crossbar.

But the hosts broke the deadlock just before the break.

Marco Verratti robbed Amine Harit of possession before Vitinha and Mbappe combined to set up Neymar, whose first-time shot went in off the post.

Marseille came close to equalising early in the second half, with Jonathan Clauss latching onto Alexis Sanchez’s lofted throughball before drawing smart reflexes out of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Verratti and Mbappe almost doubled the lead at the other end, but the visitors’ hopes of salvaging a point were effectively dashed 18 minutes from time.

This was when Gigot was shown a straight red card for rashly taking out Neymar.

Messi was marginally off target with an attempted dink from Mbappe’s throughball later on, but PSG held out to pull clear at the top of Ligue 1.

Mbappe slams transfer reports, insists he’s happy at PSG

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe has described reports he wants to leave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in January as “completely wrong”.

Mbappe, who played in PSG’s 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Marseille on Sunday, was said to have felt betrayed by the club hierarchy.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning 23-year-old signed a new contract in May, after months of uncertainty.

But he was reported to have become unsettled once more after a failure to meet his demands both tactically and in recruitment.

PSG football advisor Luis Campos emphatically denied those reports by claiming Mbappe had not informed the club of such intentions.

Head coach Galtier has also expressed confusion over the speculation.

The France international has now had his say on the reports, which came up just before PSG’s UEFA Champions League match against Benfica on Tuesday.

He is adamant the reports are not true.

“I’m very happy, I never asked to leave in January,” he said, while speaking with French media.

“The info came out on the day of the match, I didn’t understand. I’m not even remotely involved in this news. I was just as shocked as everyone else.

“People may think I’m involved, but I’m not involved at all, I was taking a nap.

“My entourage was at my little brother’s game. All the people who take care of me weren’t there. So, we were flabbergasted when we found out.

“Afterwards, we had to deal with it. There was a game to play. Just to say it’s completely wrong, and I’m very happy.”

Mbappe had been a target for Real Madrid before agreeing to prolong his stay in Paris.

He said: “I am a football player. The most important thing for me is to play and give my best on the pitch. If I start spreading myself too thin, I will get tired very quickly.

“When you play at PSG, you know what you’re getting into, what it’s going to involve in the good and in the bad. You have to be ready.

“Those who come here know, we warn them. We’re right in it at the moment, but we are focused on winning games and titles.”

Mbappe has started the season in prolific form in front of goal, scoring 12 goals in 14 games across all competitions for the French champions.

  • Neymar, Mbappe strike as PSG beat Marseille

Neymar, Mbappe strike as PSG beat Marseille

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) came out on top 2-1 in a tight tussle with Marseille in Sunday’s Classique, with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe securing the bragging rights.

All three goals were scored before half-time in a match that was far from being a classic between Ligue 1’s top two teams.

Duje Caleta-Car had cancelled out Neymar’s opener, before Mbappe struck from the penalty kick spot to restore parity.

Marseille had what they thought was an equaliser disallowed by VAR late on.

The win maintains PSG’s strong form after Mauricio Pochettino’s side won their previous two fixtures 5-1 and 6-1.

It moves them closer to putting the finishing touches to regaining the Ligue 1 title.

  • I’m staying here with Marseille – Arsenal midfielder

I’m staying here with Marseille – Arsenal midfielder

Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has again declared he wants to sign permanently for Olympique Marseille.

Guendouzi is on a season-long loan at OM, with a permanent option set at €11m.

He said yesterday: “Signing for OM was a carefully considered choice, the best choice I’ve made for a long time. I have a lot of fun on and off the pitch with my family.

“With the project being built, I knew I was going to be an important player in the team. I really intend to register for the long term at OM. From the first conversations with the leaders, I felt that this was a project for me. I want to win with OM. With the coach, I progressed. I stay myself. I’m not inventing a role, I’ve always been like that.

“I was quickly very comfortable here, I am very happy at OM. My purchase option will be exercised automatically if maintained. That’s why it was a carefully considered choice, it’s not just for this year.”

  • Why I chose Genk over Marseille – Ike Ugbo

Why I chose Genk over Marseille – Ike Ugbo

Former Chelsea striker Ike Ugbo has explained why he chose KRC Genk ahead of Olympique Marseille this past summer.

Ugbo had offers from both clubs, but chose Genk after last season’s loan with Cercle Brugge.

He told Sport/Foot Magazine: “The young Ugbo might have opted for Marseille: a big club, in the south of France, near the family (who lives in Nice). The prospect of playing against Lionel Messi (at PSG) … But today’s Ugbo thinks that might have been a mistake.

“After Circle, Genk seems to me to be the ideal step to take a further step.

“Why Genk? Mainly because of the players who have made their mark here in the past. When I see where they’ve ended up … When you’re young, you don’t pay too much attention to that sort of thing, otherwise I would have come sooner. I spoke with the club at the end of last season and they had a great project for me.

“Other teams came forward, but I felt I could find what I needed here at this point in my career. It was the project that won me over. I’m not yet at the level where I can consider winning the Champions League, or playing a major role elsewhere. I have to be smarter in my choices.”

  • Ex-Chelsea manager turns down Marseille job

Ex-Chelsea manager turns down Marseille job

Former Chelsea and Juventus manager Maurizio Sarri has turned down the chance to replace Andre Villas-Boas at Marseille.

The French club have suspended Villas-Boas and want to replace him immediately.

However, Sky Italia reveals Sarri turned down the club’s approach, and the 62-year-old does not want to manage until the start of next season.

Marseille are also being linked to ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre, along with Leonardo Jardim and Ernesto Valverde.

The club sit in 9th place in Ligue 1 after 21 games, and they have played two less than most of the teams above them in the table.

  • Marseille ‘suspend’ Villas-Boas after offering to resign in transfer row

Marseille ‘suspend’ Villas-Boas after offering to resign in transfer row

Andre Villas-Boas was “suspended” by Marseille on Tuesday after earlier offering to resign as coach at a press conference in which he revealed the Ligue 1 club signed midfielder Olivier Ntcham from Celtic against his wishes on transfer deadline day.

“This protective decision had become inevitable given the recent scheming and attitudes shown which have seriously damaged Olympique de Marseille as an institution,” a club statement said.

The suspension is a likely first step towards Marseille definitively parting company with the 43-year-old from Portugal, who became coach at the Velodrome in 2019.

Yet Villas-Boas earlier said he wanted “nothing from OM, no money. I just want to leave.”

He said his decision came after Ntcham, a 24-year-old former France Under-21 international, joined on loan from Celtic until the end of the season just before the winter transfer window closed.

Villas-Boas said he had not been in favour of the deal and knew nothing about it.

“The transfer window closed with the arrival of a new player on deadline day. It was not a decision that was taken by me. I had nothing to do with the decision,” he said.

“I found out this morning when I woke up and looked at the press. I had specifically said no to that player and he was never on our list of targets.

“Because of that I have handed in my resignation to the board.”

In their statement, Marseille described the coach’s comments — aimed at the club’s Spanish sporting director Pablo Longoria — as “unacceptable”.

Villas-Boas, the former Porto, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager, had already said last week that he expected to leave when his contract expires at the end of this season, with Marseille on a run of just one win in nine games in all competitions.

Three straight league defeats have seen last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up slip to ninth in the table before they face Lens on Wednesday.

Their scheduled match at home to Rennes on Saturday was postponed after several hundred angry fans stormed the club’s training ground, leading to 25 arrests.

The supporters were demonstrating against the poor results but also against the running of the club by president Jacques-Henri Eyraud.

The protesters were condemned as “thugs” by Marseille’s owner, the American tycoon Frank McCourt, who likened the incidents to the deadly January 6 assault on the US Congress.

  • Porto hand Marseille 12th straight Champions League defeat

Porto hand Marseille 12th straight Champions League defeat

FC Porto beat Olympique de Marseille 3-0 in Group C on Tuesday, inflicting a record 12th consecutive defeat in the UEFA Champions League on the French club.

The defeat left Andre Villas-Boas’s team on the brink of elimination.

Moussa Marega, Sergio Oliveira with a penalty kick and Luis Diaz found the back of the net, while Dimitri Payet missed an early penalty kick for Marseille.

The result meant FC Porto stay second on six points, three behind Manchester City who maintained their perfect record with a 3-0 win over Olympiakos.

OM, the 1993 champions, have now matched Belgian side Anderlecht’s infamous record in the Champions League from 2003 to 2005.

They have also not scored a goal since Souleymane Diawara did in 2013 in a 2-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

Marseille’s last win in Europe’s premium club competition came in 2012, when they beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the first leg of their last 16 tie.
