PLATEAU: 80 persons killed in Sunday’s attacks buried in mass grave

Over 80 persons killed in Sunday’s attacks, in Kanam council of Plateau State, have been buried in a mass grave.

Many wept as the dead were laid to rest on Monday.

The attacks took place in seven communities of the council.

About 70 residents were reportedly abducted while over 100 houses were set ablaze.

It was gathered that activities in the council ground to a halt as people abandoned their businesses to pay their last respects to the dead.

Some of the residents of the communities expressed concern about the presence of terrorist groups in the game reserve in the area.

A member representing Pankshin, Kanam, Kanke (PKK) in the House of Representatives, Yusuf Adamu Gagdi condemned the attacks.

In a statement made available to newsmen, he commiserated with families of those who lost loved ones and prayed God to grant them rest.

Adamu, who is the chairman of the House Committee on Armed Forces, said the Minister of Defence, Gen. Magashi (Retd) has been contacted over the development and asked to immediately deploy troops in the affected communities and environs.

Gagdi expressed displeasure at what he termed the federal government’s lukewarm attitude to the crisis in Plateau communities.

He posited that the federal government, who has exclusive control of security apparatus in the country, has failed in its primary responsibility of protecting life and property in the country.

Abuja: Galadimawa residents rejects proposed location of mass grave for Covid-19 victim

Anxiety has enveloped residents of Galadimawa area in the federal capital territory (FCT), over an alleged plan by the federal government to site a mass grave for Covid-19 victims and other infectious diseases close to their vicinity.

The site, the residents say, is between Galadimawa roundabout and Games Village estate in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

Among some of the estates located in the aforsaid axix include, SunCity Estate, Games Village Estate, SunnyVale Estate; Aldenco; Brains and Hammers; Biltmore among others.

Speaking with journalists on Monday, Gbenga Ambali, representative of SunCity estate, said the decision to site an infectious disease cemetery close to residential areas could be harmful to them because they depend on boreholes for water.

Ambali said an infectious disease cemetery could create future problems for them since a lot is not known about COVID-19.

“We want to make it very clear that this would not be good for us, for two reasons,” he said.

“The number reason is that most of us in this neighbourhood, our source of water is through borehole, so if we have an infectious disease cemetery around us we are not safe.

“So we want our government to rethink and have a change of mind on this. Number two reason is on the issue of the COVID-19 that we are all facing right now, nobody knows the full details of this disease.

“So bringing it down close to us would be creating additional problems in the future.”

  • Largest mass grave of IS victims discovered in Syria

Bodies of some 1,400 people killed by the Islamic State Terrorist Group (IS, outlawed in Russia) have been found in a mass grave in the Syrian City of Raqqa.
The Head of Damascus-based Syrian Human Rights Network, Ahmad Kazeem said this to Sputnik on Wednesday.
“The biggest mass grave with 1,400 bodies has been found in Panorama area in Raqqa. IS terrorists did it,’’ Kazem said.
Most of the victims are those accused by IS militants of having ties with the Syrian government and armed forces, according to Kazem.
Among them are women, children and military personnel.
It is not the first such discovery in Raqqa, but it is the largest mass grave found in the city so far.
IS terrorists seized Raqqa in 2014 and proclaimed it their capital.
The military campaign to recapture Raqqa was launched in June 2016 by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) backed by the U.S.-led coalition.
A year later, the campaign culminated in the Battle of Raqqa, which put the SDF in total control of the city.
As a result of the fighting and massive airstrikes, the city was completely destroyed.
According to the UN, the humanitarian situation in the city remains disastrous.

  • Mass grave containing 75 bodies found in Libya

A mass grave containing 75 bodies was found West of the Libyan coastal city of Sirte on Tuesday, a military source said on Wednesday.
A source with the Sirte security forces said that the forces were notified by a resident about the mass grave, which had been found in an agricultural area 15 km west of Sirte, 450 km East of the capital Tripoli.
“The force recovered the remains of 75 unidentified persons and the exhumation of the bodies was carried out in presence of a court representative,’’ the source said on condition of anonymity.
DNA samples had been taken for analysis.
If confirmed, this will be largest mass grave found in Sirte since the city was taken over by government forces in 2015.
Sirte had witnessed months of fighting between forces allied with the UN-backed government and the Islamic State (IS) terrorists, which ended in December 2015 with the government forces taking over the city.
In June 2016, a mass grave and secret prison were found in Libya’s Sirte amid an ongoing operation fighting Islamic State (IS) militants, sources told The New Arab.
Seven bodies were found buried in the grave that was discovered in a farm west of the city, while three prisoners were saved when security forces came across a secret prison in another town after liberating it from the militants.
The prisoners – said to be held captive for several months – were found in dire humanitarian conditions, the anonymous source told The New Arab.
Meanwhile, the battle to cleanse Sirte of IS militants has continued to progress with government forces closing in on the group’s stronghold.
