Under-fire Sarri denies link with Roma job

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri said he would not be leaving for Roma, after speculation in the media on Thursday.

The Italian was speaking after the Blues defeated Malmo 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to win 5-1 on aggregate and move into the Europa League last 16.

Sarri has been under pressure recently following a mixed run of results.

Asked if he had been in contact with Roma, the 60-year-old said: “Of course no, I have a contract with Chelsea for next season so it is impossible.”

Chelsea went into Thursday’s game on the back of three defeats in their previous five matches – a 4-0 loss at Bournemouth, a 6-0 thrashing at Manchester City and an FA Cup exit at the hands of Manchester United on Monday.

His side face City again in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, and then meet Tottenham in the Premier League.

Sarri added: “It’s very easy that City is in our minds. We played two weeks ago and now we can try to solve this problem.”

All of Chelsea’s goals against Malmo came in the second half.

Olivier Giroud scored the first from close range before Ross Barkley made it 2-0 with a free-kick from the edge of the box and teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi added a fine third in the 84th minute.

  • EPL: Gonzalo Higuain looks set to quit Chelsea

Gonzalo Higuain is ready to quit Chelsea at the end of this season, if the club sacks Maurizio Sarri as manager, Daily Mail reports.

Higuain only arrived at Stamford Bridge in January and has scored two goals in his first three Premier League matches.

Chelsea have the option to extend his initial six-month loan deal to another season-long loan for £15.6million at the end of the season, or they can buy him outright for £31.3m.

However, the 31-year-old is concerned over Sarri’s future at the club and would be set to follow him out the door, should the axe fall on the manager.

Sarri worked with Higuain at Napoli, but his Chelsea future remains in major doubt, after a string of disappointing results left Chelsea in sixth place in the Premier League.

  • EPL: We believe in Sarri vision – David Luiz

EPL: We believe in Sarri vision – David Luiz

Chelsea defender, David Luiz, insists there have been no dissenting voices among the Chelsea squad despite troubling results under head coach, Maurizio Sarri.

Sarri’s position as head coach is under scrutiny, with Chelsea facing a crucial run of fixtures.

Monday’s FA Cup tie with Manchester United is followed by Thursday’s Europa League last-32 second leg with Malmo and the February 24 Carabao Cup final with Manchester City.

It was City who inflicted Chelsea’s worst defeat in 28 years, the 6-0 reverse following another humiliation, a 4-0 loss at Bournemouth which was the Blues’ heaviest in 22 years.

An hour-long post-mortem followed the City loss on Monday – 10 minutes longer than the dressing-room inquest at Bournemouth – yet Luiz says no one has raised objections to Sarri’s possession-based tactics, which have yielded mixed results.

“We have had many meetings already asking if someone doesn’t believe,” Luiz said.

“They can say. Nobody said anything. It’s because everyone believes [in it].”

Chelsea slipped out of the Premier League’s top four as a result of the loss at City, responding with a 2-1 first-leg win at Malmo on Thursday night.

  • Chelsea boss Sarri wants immediate reaction after City thrashing

Chelsea boss Sarri wants immediate reaction after City thrashing

Chelsea must show an immediate reaction to their 6-0 Premier League drubbing at Manchester City, manager Maurizio Sarri has said.

He said, “I have held an hour-long discussion with the players to dissect the loss.”

Chelsea’s capitulation at the Etihad Stadium was their worst defeat in Premier League history and the London club have dropped to sixth in the standings.

The pressure has since mounted on Sarri, who conducted a similar hour-long inquest in the dressing room after their 4-0 league defeat at Bournemouth.

Sarri told reporters ahead of Thursday’s Europa League last 32 clash at Swedish side, Malmo.

“We talked all together for one hour the day after the match. I think that it is better to work, better to react on the pitch.

“The last game was not a problem of motivation. We were not able to react to the first difficulty during the match because we started well. Then, after the first goal, we could not react.

“So, the problem is different. But it is always a mind problem, a mental problem. And we need to solve them.

“Malmo, who does not start their Swedish league season until April, is playing their first game of the year but Sarri believes their defensive shape will cause Chelsea problems.

“They are compact, they are solid. They usually have a very good defensive phase, so it will not be easy. But we want to win and react immediately.”

  • Hazard reveals Sarri suits him more than Mourinho

Hazard reveals Sarri suits him more than Mourinho

Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard says he is more suited to the philosophy of current Blues head coach Maurizio Sarri than former boss Jose Mourinho.

Hazard, who was the subject of public criticism from Sarri in January, previously expressed his regret at how his time with Mourinho ended at Chelsea and said he wants to work with the coach again.

However, the Belgium international forward admits he shares more similarities with Sarri, telling Chelsea’s official website: “All the managers I’ve played for have given me something.

“From when I started with Claude Puel at Lille, to now with Maurizio Sarri. They all see football in different ways which is why I’m the player I am. They have all given me important advice.

“Jose Mourinho was special, but the way Sarri and Rudi Garcia [former Lille coach] like to play is more like my philosophy of football, but they’ve all given me a lot.”

  • Chelsea opt for Zidane to replace under-fire Maurizio Sarri

Chelsea opt for Zidane to replace under-fire Maurizio Sarri

Chelsea want Zinedine Zidane as their next manager to replace under-fire Maurizio Sarri and take them back to the top.

Current manager Sarri is running out of support after the 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City as the Blues dropped to sixth in the Premier League.

There is growing call amongst the top brass for Zidane and talks have advanced this week over when they should make their move.

Zidane’s incredible Champions League credentials, winning it three times in three years as manager of Real Madrid, are a huge draw for the Blues board.

The 46-year-old is currently not in management and is understood to be very keen on a job in the Premier League.

Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard — linked with a move away from the club with his contract up in 2020, idolises Zidane.

A move for the legendary French player, who won the World Cup with Les Bleus, would be encouragement for Hazard to sign a new deal.

Sarri was unbeaten in his first 12 games in charge at Stamford Bridge, having succeeded sacked Antonio Conte last summer.

He has taken Chelsea to a Carabao Cup final against Manchester City later this month but the Blues hierarchy are more interested in Champions League qualification.

  • Chelsea manager Sarri reveals why he snubbed Guardiola

Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri, has said he did not intentionally snub Pep Guardiola’s post-match handshake, after Manchester City won 6-0 at the Etihad on Sunday.

After the full-time whistle, the Italian walked straight past Guardiola’s outstretched hand and down the tunnel, with assistant Gianfranco Zola having to placate the Spaniard instead.

Speaking to Sky Sports later on, Sarri insists he was too keen to return to the dressing room.

“I didn’t see him at the time but I will go to say hello to him later, as usual.

“I wanted to go to the dressing room and in the moment I didn’t see him. I have no problem with him,” he said

Guardiola also insisted he had no issue with Sarri, after his stormed down the tunnel.

“I just spoke with Zola, Sarri didn’t see me.

“I have a great relationship with him, no problem,” Guardiola said.

  • EPL: Sarri unmoved as Chelsea downfall harms top-four hopes

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri again vowed to stick with his style of football in spite of the Londoners suffering their worst defeat since 1991 in Sunday’s hammering at Manchester City.

But it is still clear to him that woeful away form threatens to ruin their season.

The statistics do not make pleasant reading for the under-pressure Sarri, and Chelsea’s 6-0 English Premier League (EPL) drubbing at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday was alarming.

But it is the frequency of defeats away from Stamford Bridge that is causing the most concern.

Four away losses in a row in all competitions without scoring equals Chelsea’s club record.

Their last away goal was N’Golo Kante’s winner at Crystal Palace on Dec. 30.

The Manchester City reverse was Chelsea’s third away league defeat in a row in which they have conceded 12 goals.

It piles the pressure on a manager whose insistence on adhering to his philosophy of possession football is frustrating the Chelsea fans.

    However, the Italian remains unmoved.

“My target is to play my football, and not to change to other football (styles),’’ Sarri said.

“Today (Sunday), I didn’t see my football. At the beginning it worked. So, now we need to understand the reason why at the moment it isn’t working.

“I am worried about my team and the performance — my job is always at risk.”

Things have unraveled very quickly for Sarri and his side.

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho at Manchester United in December, it appeared Chelsea were in a straight tussle with Arsenal for fourth spot.

Sarri’s side were three points ahead of their London rivals and 11 above Manchester United.

But after Sunday’s humiliation at the Etihad, Manchester United are in fourth place, one point ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea.

To show how things have turned around, Manchester United now have a better goal difference than Chelsea.

They were 21 goals worse off before Solskjaer’s first game against Cardiff on Dec. 22.

Sarri’s tactical approach will be further tested should Chelsea’s poor form continue and they fall further behind in the race for the top four and UEFA Champions League qualification.

Sarri, though, has an ally in Pep Guardiola.

“I know what he wants to do,” the Manchester City manager said. “They want to try to do it. They beat us at Stamford Bridge. The people don’t understand how difficult it is to do something.

“The people expect that it immediately comes, it needs time. It only is the belief of the owners.”

Time, though, is not something usually afforded to the man in the hot seat at Chelsea, who have had eight different permanent managers in less than eight years.

Sarri has yet to convince anyone that he will be treated any differently.

  • Abramovich to replace Sarri with Pochettino at Chelsea

Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, has reportedly notified Maurizio Sarri his future is in jeopardy and is ready to rival Manchester United for the services of Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, according to the UK Express.

The Blues returned to winning ways with a 5-0 win over Huddersfield on Saturday, following their 4-0 humiliation at Bournemouth.

However, Abramovich is already losing patience with Sarri, whose side are locked in a three-way battle with Arsenal and United, for the final Champions League qualifying spot.

Chelsea were reported to be interested in Pochettino last summer, before appointing Sarri to succeed Antonio Conte.

Sarri made an instant impact at Stamford Bridge, but results and performances have dipped, since he suffered the first defeat of his reign against Pochettino’s Spurs side back in November.

It would cost Abramovich around £50million in compensation, to prise the Argentine from North London and the former Southampton manager’s preference remains United.

  • Chelsea manager Sarri decides, says Hazard can leave

Chelsea manager Sarri decides, says Hazard can leave

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has said Eden Hazard is free to leave the club if he wants to.

Sarri wants Hazard to stay but does not think the club should stand in the Belgian’s way if he would prefer to move on.

Hazard has long been linked with a move to Spanish side Real Madrid and has said in the past that he would be interested in a move to the reigning Champions League holders.
According to SkySports, Chelsea are looking to renew Hazard’s contract, which expires next season, and the west London side risk losing him for free in 2020, if he does not extend his current deal.

“The situation of Eden is different,” Sarri told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash at Bournemouth.

“Eden is 28. If he wants to go, I think he has to go.

“Of course, I hope the opposite, I hope he wants to stay here.

He has the potential to be the best player in Europe at the moment.”
