Palaver awaits govs, ministers as EFCC spreads dragnet after May 29

Palaver as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), at the weekend disclosed that many political office holders will no longer have immunity after May 29 this year and those who engaged in misappropriation would pay for it as its officials would be after them.

Many political office holders including the president, some governors, ministers, Commissioners, special advisers, among others, will end their tenure on May 29.

Many of them who have been found to have soiled their hands by looting the treasury have always hidden under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution which covers them with immunity to evade prosecution.

Section 308 of the constitution (as amended) shields many office holders including the president, vice president, governors, the deputy governors, among others, from civil and criminal proceedings, arrest, imprisonment and court processes while in office.

However, on Friday, the EFCC in its “Eagle Series” posted on its Facebook wall, disclosed that to those of them who are clinging to the section to perpetrate all sorts of things, May 29 is 30 days away when their immunity would lapse.

According to a quote by the agency on the series, people continue to praise government officials even when they are owing workers salary, or when the hunger in the land is very rampant, the reality would dawn on such officials and they would pay when the seat is vacant.

May 29: Why Tinubu must be given increased security – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has called for enhanced security for the President-Elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu, due to rising security threats and treasonable utterances from the opposition camp.

The Executive Director, MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola stated this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

“We find it necessary to alert the nation, particularly the security agencies, concerning ominous signs on the Nigerian political horizon. Too many threats have emerged over the approaching inauguration of the winner of the presidential election held on Feb. 25.

“We have never had it so tense. The tension in the air is so thick that it can be cut with a knife. This is probably the first time open threats will be issued against a president-elect after he has been declared winner of the presidential election. Serious threats hang over our heads like the sword of Damocles. The signs are too open to be ignored.

“An Abuja-based pastor, Sarah Amaku had the effrontery to say publicly that Tinubu was not the president-elect. She said Tinubu was the president-elect for the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the ruling party.

“Controversial Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, also declared yesterday that there was no president-elect.

“An indirect call for interim government and an undisguised attempt at derailing the swearing-in of the president-elect has also emanated from Chuks Ibegbu, the former National Publicity Secretary of the Igbo apex socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide,’’ he said.

Akintola added: “Ibegbu wants the National Assembly to extend President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration by three months, beyond May 29.

“A few followers of one of the presidential candidates who lost the election, Peter Obi, have also converged in front of the Nigerian Army headquarters in Abuja, begging the military to take over power.

“Such utterances and actions have emboldened at least one real and palpable threat as a member of the opposition, Obiajulu Uja, disrupted an Ibom flight from Abuja to Lagos on April 1. He reportedly delayed the flight for more than one hour.

‘’It is obvious that Obiajulu would do more than that if he has the chance. These are ominous signs and only the uninitiated will fail to read the handwriting on the wall. We therefore call on the security agencies to double guards for the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his vice, Kashim Shettima. Nothing must happen to them.’’

“We remind those plotting to truncate the presidential inauguration billed for May 29 of the dire consequences of their actions. The whole of Africa is enveloped in crises. Sudan cannot breathe. It is presently torn between government soldiers and the militia. M23 and the ADF are at war with government forces in DR Congo.

“Peace has eluded Burkina Faso, Mali and Chad. Anti-inauguration elements should remember Nigeria’s humongous population of 210 million which will have nowhere to go in case of a conflagration since all the countries surrounding us are already engulfed in one conflict or another.

“We therefore call on the opposition to exercise restraint in its conduct as it contests election results. Those who fight and run away live to fight another day. Those who did not win in 2023 have another chance in 2027. Remember the words of Paul Tibbets who dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, ‘My God! What have we done?’ But it was too late. The damage had already been done. A word is enough for the wise.”

May 29: Tinubu, APC stakeholders inspects facilities at Defence House

The President-elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu, and the Vice-President-elect, Sen. Kashim Shettima, alongside other APC stakeholders on Wednesday visited the Defecse House, Maitama, to inspect facilities.

The Defecse House will serve as official operational base of the President-elect till May 29, when he will be inaugurated as the country’s 16th democratically elected president.

Tinubu was also accompanied on the visit by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, the APC National Chairman; Speaker House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; and Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ovie Omo-agege, among others.

From the Defence House, Tinubu will receive briefings and hold key meetings as President-elect when he eventually moved into it.

This is not a new development as incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari also lodged at the same facility months before his inauguration on May 29, 2015, before he moved into his official residence at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

Recall that Tinubu returned to Abuja on Monday aboard his private jet, accompanied by his wife, Oluremi, and son, Seyi, after a month-long trip to Paris.

The president-elect, who left Nigeria on March 21 for Paris on vacation after a hectic campaign and election season, on his return, said he was strong and ready to work.

He was quoted in a statement by one of his media aides, Mr Tunde Rahman, as saying: “I am ready for the task ahead.

“I have rested; I am refreshed and I am ready for the task ahead, forget about what the rumour mill may have told you. I’m strong; very strong.’’

On his plans for the country, Tinubu said he had been consulting and planning, with a view to putting together a strong team, so he could hit the ground running once he assumed office on May 29.

Since his return to the country, Tinubu’s residence in Asokoro had been a beehive of activities as APC stakeholders, including Adamu, its national chairman, had continued to throng in for consultations.

Upon his arrival in the country, President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was escorted by a carnival-like motorcade to the Defence House, where he is expected to stay ahead of his inauguration on May 29.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Tinubu arrived in the country on Monday via the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja in the company of his wife, Senator Oluremi after resting abroad.

The President-elect, whose private jet arrived at the presidential wing of the Abuja international airport at 4.30 pm, was given a rousing welcome by party supporters and stakeholders, including members of the dissolved APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).

On hand to receive him were Sen. Kashim Shettima, the Vice President-elect; Mr James Faleke, Secretary of the dissolved APC PCC; Mr Ade Omole, its Director of Diaspora; Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau, and a former Edo governor, Adams Oshiomhole, among other party chieftains.

Recall that Tinubu travelled out of Nigeria to France on March 21 to take a rest and plan ahead of his inauguration, according to a statement issued by the now-dissolved APC PCC.

“The president-elect had left the country through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja.

“He decided to take a break after the hectic campaign and election season to rest in Paris and London, preparatory to going to Saudi Arabia for Umrah (Lesser Hajj) and the Ramadan fasting,” the statement read.

Support groups in Abuja, Niger and Nasarawa States had earlier converged at the APC PCC Secretariat at Abuja Central Business District for onward movement to the airport to welcome Tinubu.

Only accredited support groups were allowed at the airport to welcome Tinubu and his wife Oluremi.

TNG reports Tinubu is expected to stay at the Defence House ahead of his inauguration on May 29.

May 29: Why I will not live anywhere near Abuja after I leave office – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has again reiterated his stand of not living anywhere close to Abuja, the federal capital territory (FCT).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports President Buhari as saying this so the in-coming president will have time and space to take decisions without him interfering.

Fielding questions from newsmen after Friday’s Eid-el-Fitr prayers in Abuja, the president expressed the believe that democracy has a bright future in Nigeria.

He disclosed that his conviction was based on Nigerians’ disposition to defend democracy against all threats.

“Nigerians appreciate the stability of democracy.

“The outcome of the 2023 elections in which more than 10 governors failed to make it to the Senate sent a message that Nigerians know the power of their votes and how to use them.

“Nigerians cherish democracy. They have shown their love for it and will defend it against real or perceived threats.

“They will continue to vote one way or the other depending on their preferences,’’ President Buhari said.

He assured that the May 29 handover date to a new administration remained sacrosanct.

“God willing, nothing will stop the handover,’’ he assured.

On his plans after leaving office, the president said he felt fulfilled that God had made it possible for him to serve two terms of four years each and looked forward to an orderly handover.

“I thank God for what He has done for me personally and for what He has enabled us to achieve.

“I am looking forward to returning to my town; to be as far away as I can from Abuja so that the in-coming president will have the time and the space to take decisions without my distracting him.’’

May 29: Nigeria’s military pledges peaceful transition

The Defence Headquarters has expressed commitment to a peaceful transition to a new government on May 29 and assured that the military and intelligence community were ready to counter any threat to national security.

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Musa Danmadami gave the assurance on Thursday in Abuja at the bi-weekly news conference on the operations of the armed forces.

Danmadami urged the populace to discard the apprehension created by the enemies of Nigeria predicting security threats.

“Like the general election has come and gone, winners have been announced, people are just being apprehensive to be insinuating situations that are not there.

“People have been predicting that this country will finish but nothing has happened.

“Members of the Armed Forces like I always tell you, will continue to give their best, and we are not resting on our oars to ensure that peace and security is sustained.

“I equally assure you that the intelligence community too are working round the clock just like the armed forces to ensure that there is peace and stability; I can assure you that there are a lot of follow up operations going on everyday.

“People who are at the verge of committing crime are being arrested; people who are moving ammunitions from one point to the other to go and commit havoc are being arrested everyday as it was reflected in the brief for today.

“So people should not be afraid that when they hand over there is going to be calamity all over the place.

“I can assure you that we are ready to address whatever calamity that wants to come up.

“We are ready for that, so people should just go about their normal duties and forget about these apprehension people are creating unnecessarily.

“There is no cause for alarm and everything is under control,” he said.

Danmadami also assured the public that the Sallah would be celebrated peacefully, adding that there might be one or two isolated cases, but that the military and other security agencies would be ready to tackle them.

  • 42 days to inauguration, Tinubu ‘shelters’ overseas – By Ehichioya Ezomon

42 days to inauguration, Tinubu ‘shelters’ overseas – By Ehichioya Ezomon

President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu flew out of Nigeria on March 21, and 27 days after, there’s no word as to where he’s resident and what he’s doing outside the country.

No one has seen, or heard from him except, perhaps, his close family members and aides who would rather other issues in the polity engage nosey Nigerians.

Following initial concerns about the manner of Tinubu’s departure, and where he’s headed, his media aide, Tunde Rahman, said he’s on a short rest in Europe, to plan for his new government, and also observe the Lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

Rahman’s explanation didn’t douse public scepticism, more so as it wasn’t the first time Tinubu would “sneak out” of Nigeria, and thus offer tale bearers a platter to spin all manner of innuendos to fill the void.

Recall that early in the 2023 poll cycle, Tinubu had vanished from Nigeria, and it took quite a while to locate him in London, where he’d a knee surgery that speculators said would hinder his presidential run.

During the primary process to pick the candidates of the 18 parties that contested in the February 25 poll, Tinubu’s off, unannounced, to London.

His long stay prompted rumours of serious ailment, with some vowing he’s dead. A video and photos showing Tinubu doing a workout, and meeting associates and his grandchildren were labelled by doubters as photoshops to deceive Nigerians.

But Tinubu returned, hail and hearty, to face gruelling primary and general election campaigns he’s predicted not physically prepared for nor would win. Yet, he won both polls, and is primed to assume power on May 29, as President Muhammadu Buhari bows out after eight years in office.

Tinubu’s “disappearing act” – and its associated allegations of undisclosed ill-heath – brings to memory similar history of ailments that affected former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Buhari.

Yar’Adua’s sickness was public before former President Olusegun Obasanjo drafted him into the contest, and was hospitalised abroad almost the duration of campaigns on his behalf by Obasanjo.

At one of the campaign stops in the North, a report filtered in that Yar’Adua had died. Obasanjo said he’d spoken to him before the rally.

He put a call to Yar’Adua (the phone on speaker) and said: “Umaru, are you dead? They said you are dead.” To which Yar’Adua answered, “No, I’m not dead. I’m alive.”

Yar’Adua won the election, and ruled from 2007 to 2010, even as he alternated between Nigeria and overseas for medical care. He died abroad, and his remains brought into the country at mid night.

Buhari’s unknown ailment(s) wasn’t public knowledge, or a hindrance during his long years of struggles to be President in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015, respectively.

But the sickness assumed public concerns because of frequency of its bouts, and the duration of his medical trips to London.

At such visits, stories swirled about Buhari’s incapacitatation, being vegetative or dead, putting his aides, and media handlers at odds with the true picture, as they’re kept in the dark about Buhari’s real sickness, and medical conditions during those times.

A video of Buhari seeing off visitors to the front courtyard, or photos of him signing documents were dissed by Nigerians, who wanted him to address them directly.

The rumour mill even purveyed that Buhari was (or is) a “cloned Jubrin from Sudan” – a falsehood he said was one of the things that pained him, as Nigerians denigrated him.

That Buhari’s ailment affected his governance was attested to lately by his staunch ally and Media Adviser to the President, Mr Femi Adesina.

On Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ on April 10, Adesina was asked if Buhari’s sickness was a setback to his administration, and he said:

“It should be because when he fell sick in 2017, he came back in March (and) and went again in April and didn’t come back until August 19.

“About all, eight months. The sickness took eight months of his time in the office. Of course, nobody would like that. But what we are glad about is that he came whole, sound and better than he went.”

Given Yar’Adua and Buhari’s long illnesses and their effects on governance – and unaccounted-for financial burden on Nigeria – some Nigerians warn that a President Tinubu will travel the same route for frequent medical tourism.

Most concerning to Nigerians is not knowing Tinubu’s whereabouts since March 21. Only two photos and a video about him have graced the press: Tinubu among faithful in a prayer session at Hajj in Saudi Arabia; Tinubu and wife, Oluremi, in an affectionate pose; and Tinubu and family circle at an Iftar.

These images have been dismissed as archivals circulated to keep alive the hopes of APC members and Tinubu’s supporters.

As in previous occasions of his sudden travels overseas, Tinubu’s aides and APC officials have tried to sidetrack media queries about his itinerary, and state of health.

The confusion in their rank was apparent in the explanation given by the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr Felix Morka.

Fielding questions on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme on April 14, Morka wasn’t sure if Tinubu’s in Europe, although he insisted he’s taking a rest after the elections, and planning for his government.

“He (Tinubu) is probably in Europe. He’s fine. After the elections and all of the energy expended, he just decided to take a moment of rest,” Morka said.

“Once he returns and is inaugurated on May 29, there will be no dulling. He’ll be saddled with the responsibility of running a country as massive and complex as Nigeria. I know he’ll be back in the country very shortly.”

Morka noted that Tinubu’s reaching out to Heads of Government and other levels of leadership of other countries “that are vital to the agenda he’s bringing in his new government.”

“So, he’s not sleeping in his bed; he’s also in meetings regularly with all kinds of people who are travelling from other countries to see him preparatory to his inauguration. So, it’s a working visit,” Morka added.

Various reasons have been adduced for Tinubu temporarily shifting base abroad. It’s a given that he’ll use the moment to undergo medical checkup, yet he wants to avoid distractions from unwanted visitors – many of them lobbying for positions in the next government – to his Defence House, Abuja, holdout till May 29.

In so doing, only a few Nigerians – who are very close, and on invite – can reach him where he’s honkered down to plan for his government.

Security is also a concern. Being a typical Nigerian savouring a hard-earned victory at the poll, it might be difficult for Security operatives at the Defence House to keep at bay the hordes of visitors, some of whom may pose security risks to the President-elect.

Importantly, Tinubu reportedly wants to give President Buhari wide berths to finish strong, so “he’ll not be perceived or fingered by detractors as competing with the President in running the administration that’s barely one month and half to go,” as confided by a top APC official last week.

The official said the President-elect discussed his movements outside Nigeria with President Buhari, and he’s sure “Tinubu converses with Buhari daily” while he’s away.

“And that’s why the concerns and anxiety by Nigerians over Tinubu’s whereabouts don’t seem to bother the government, and the hierarchy of the APC,” the official said.

The posers: Where’s President-elect Tinubu? When is he showing up, and addressing Nigerians in real time, so they know he’s alive, and a ‘Kanuri’, not another cloned Jubrin from Sudan?

Afterall, there’s scarcity of “Bla bla blu” to entertain his haters, and “agbado” to feed his enthusiasts. So, 42 days to inauguration, Nigerians on both sides of the divide wait for Tinubu’s return!
