    I’m sorry, I failed – Mbappe

Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe apologised after blowing his penalty in their Euro 2020 round of 16 shootout defeat to Switzerland.

Mbappe, who failed to score a goal during the entirety of the tournament, stepped up to take the fifth spot-kick with the underdogs having converted all of theirs, but his strike was parried away by Yann Sommer.

“Very difficult to turn the page,” he wrote on social media. “The sadness is immense after this elimination, we could not reach our goal.

“I’m sorry for this penalty. I wanted to help the team but failed.

“Finding sleep will be difficult but unfortunately it is the ups and downs of this sport that I love so much.

“I know you fans have been disappointed, but I still want to thank you for your support and for always believing in us.

“The most important thing will be to get up even stronger for the next upcoming deadlines. Congratulations and good luck to Switzerland.”

Mbappe misses penalty to send France out of Euro 2020

Kylian Mbappe missed the crucial kick as Switzerland beat France on penalties in the Euro 2020 last 16 after a classic European Championship game.

The Swiss had been seconds away from elimination during 90 minutes but go through to face Spain after progressing from a major tournament knockout game for the first time since 1938.

Haris Seferovic headed the Swiss ahead and they had a penalty saved that could have made it 2-0 before Karim Benzema scored twice and Paul Pogba put France 3-1 up with a screamer.

Seferovic headed in his second goal of the game for Switzerland and substitute Mario Gavranovic hammered in a last-minute equaliser to send the game to extra time.

Mbappe missed a couple of big chances for the world champions in extra time and Olivier Giroud had a header saved in the final minute.

Paris St-Germain forward Mbappe was the only player to fail to score in the shootout, after an excellent Yann Sommer save.

Switzerland play Spain, who also came through a thriller – 5-3 after extra time against Croatia – in the quarter-final in St Petersburg on Friday.

This is the biggest shock of Euro 2020 so far, with world champions France having been tipped to win the tournament by 12 of 15 BBC pundits before it started.

Ligue 1: Kylian Mbappe informs PSG he wants to leave

France international Kylian Mbappe has told PSG management he wants to leave this summer.

That’s according to RMC pundit Daniel Riolo.

Riolo declared this morning: “I know that Mbappé has asked to leave, but it is complicated because first you have to find a club that has the money to pay him, but the novelty is that he really does not want to stay.

“If he doesn’t leave this summer, he’ll be free next season. And that’s why Doha doesn’t want to hear him speak.

“If Mbappé expresses that desire to leave, it means that he has to look for a club and then PSG has to move to find him a replacement. But yes, the news is that Mbappé does not want to stay at PSG.”

Real Madrid are favourites to sign Mbappe, with his PSG contract about to enter it’s final 12 months.

I was affected by Giroud’s complaints – Mbappe

Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe admits he was “affected” by Olivier Giroud’s complaints about his France team-mates not passing to him but insists he does not want to turn it into a big issue.

Giroud said after his side beat Bulgaria in a friendly that he was not receiving the ball despite runs into dangerous areas in the box.

The comments were interpreted as a dig at Mbappe and the 22-year-old says he would have preferred if Giroud had spoken to him privately instead of airing his grievances to the press.

“I spoke with Olivier Giroud. Everyone knows what happened,” Mbappe said at a press conference.

“It is true that I was a little affected by it. But we are not going to make a big deal about it because we are here to represent France, that is the most important thing.

“What he said didn’t bother me more than that, I’m a striker and I’ve had this feeling 365 times in a game.

“I congratulated him in the locker room, he didn’t say anything to me and then I heard from the press. He didn’t say anything bad. It’s more the fact of talking about it publicly, I would have preferred to let him come and be even more vocal in the locker room. But that’s not a problem, these are small trifles. The team does not need us to get in the way.”

Mbappe rejects apology from Giroud ahead of Euros

Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe is still furious with French teammate Olivier Giroud, despite the Chelsea man making an apology to Mbappe.

Giroud spoke to the media after France’s 3-0 win over Bulgaria in a warmup game.

He mentioned how he was not getting enough passes from his teammates, which Mbappe felt was a personal insult towards him.

Per RMC Sport, Mbappe was ready to give a press conference to respond to Giroud’s claims.

Giroud tried to speak with Mbappe to clear up the matter, but the PSG forward was still unhappy.

After the Bulgaria game, Giroud told reporters: “Sometimes you make the runs and ball is not arriving. Perhaps we could have found each other better, there it is.”

However, the 22-year-old says that Hernandez has been trying to convince him to choose a different path while away on international duty with France.

Mbappe has now expressed his admiration towards Bayern after talks with one of their players, telling SportBild : “Lucas Hernandez told me that I should come to Munich to play for Bayern.

“Bayern is one of the five best clubs in the world. One can only congratulate them on how they manage to keep the quality in the squad every year. They just know what they’re doing.

“Now [Jerome] Boateng and [David] Alaba have left, but [Dayot] Upamecano, who is an excellent defender, came in. They have a clear concept that makes them a great club.

“And yes, you are always a favourite for any title. So I’ll always have to win against Bayern in the future if I want to win a trophy.”

Pressed on whether he could leave PSG this year or as a free agent in 2022, the forward added: “In football, you never know what’s going to happen. But I am currently very happy as it is.”

“My parents wanted me to start my career in France, to be educated in France,” Mbappe revealed during an interview with L’Obs.

“To play football, but also to continue my education. To go to Spain, even if it was with Zidane, it was another country, another culture…”

The PSG star did not discuss his future, with his contract at the Parc des Princes set to expire in 2022, but he did leave some clues about his sporting aspirations.

“I always want to set myself challenges, because that allows you not to relax,” Mbappe said.

  • Neymar, Mbappe help PSG take title race to final day

Neymar, Mbappe help PSG take title race to final day

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe were on target as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) kept alive their hopes of retaining the Ligue 1 title with a 4-0 victory over Reims on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will go into next weekend’s final round of the season against Brest one point behind leaders Lille, who were held to a 0-0 draw by Saint-Etienne.

PSG will only get their hands on the title if they better the result Lille get against Angers next weekend, needing Christophe Galtier’s team to slip up.

Neymar opened the scoring early on with a penalty kick after Yunis Abdelhamid had been dismissed for handling an Mbappe shot.

World Cup winner Mbappe, Marquinhos and Moise Kean then wrapped up the most routine of victories.

Any hopes Reims had of securing back-to-back wins at the Parc des Princes were all but extinguished in the 13th minute.

Abdelhamid received his marching orders for handling Mbappe’s goalbound effort, with Neymar non-challantly slotting home his ninth league goal of the campaign from the resulting penalty kick.

Mbappe was not to be denied 11 minutes later, sliding home from close range after Thomas Foket had inexplicably rolled the ball across the face of his own goal.

France international Mbappe then fired wide after being played in by a sumptuous Neymar flick as PSG failed to add the third goal their dominance deserved before the interval.

Mbappe went close on a number of occasions at the start of the second period, while Neymar saw an effort ruled out for offside after Ander Herrera had struck the post from distance.

Neymar turned provider for PSG’s third after 68 minutes, his corner-kick from the left headed past Predrag Rajkovic by Marquinhos from six yards.

Substitute Kean fired into the bottom-right corner from 15 yards a minute from full-time as PSG inflicted a first defeat in six away games on Reims.
