Sanwo-olu, police to be held responsible over threats on Igbos in Lagos – Ohanaeze

Ahead of the forthcoming socio-cultural organization, the Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has reacted angrily to the fresh threat against the Igbo in Lagos state.

Recall that MC Oluomo, in a trending video was seen threatening that any Igbo who would not vote for the All Progressives Congress, APC, should sit at home. He went further to tell the party’s supporters that they know what to do if they discover they are losing in any area. The threat has been attracting wild condemnations from across the country.

In a statement made available to journalists on Friday, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said it was inexplicable that neither the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu nor the Nigeria police has made a single comment over the open threat.

Okwu said Ohanaeze was enraged that Ndigbo had continued to be an endangered species in Lagos State, yet the country prides itself as one Nigeria.

He said, “We are alarmed over the latest threat by an official of the Lagos State Government, MC Oluomo, who has invoked genocide against the Igbo in Lagos should they fail to vote for Sanwo-Olu.

“This is indeed a threat too many and we are not going to let it slide. The silence of the authorities including Governor Sanwo-Olu and the police show that they are giving tacit support to the political thugs who are maiming Ndigbo and burning down their properties in Lagos State.

“However, we want to sound this note of warning, we want to draw the attention of the international community that should any single Igbo man or woman be killed in Lagos State, either tomorrow or after the election, the governor should be held responsible as the Chief Security Officer of the state.

“The police hierarchy, who have not only refused to arrest MC Oluomo but have maintained silence, will also take responsibility for any ugly fate that befalls our people.”

Okwu called on Ndigbo in Lagos not to be intimated but to “come all out and vote for candidate of your choice; be ready to defend and protect yourselves. Your vote is your right and nobody should stop you from using it effectively tomorrow against enemies of peace.”

Though the PU was not specified, commenters on the video say the incident happened somewhere in the Oshodi area where MC Oluomo holds sway.

The incident reportedly happened at the Fehintola Giwa Street Aguda, Surulere, Lagos State, as voters were trying to get through with their accreditation before voting.

In the video, the thug is heard saying:

“This place na APC o. If you no wan vote for APC, make you go home o. If you no fit vote APC for here, go your house. Nobody force you to vote. If I see you vote another party, I go call Luger. This area na APC territory o.”

Intimidation, violence mar election in Lagos state

There have been reports of voter intimidation and ethnic discrimination in some Polling Units across Lagos state by some persons supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), despite the presence of security officials.

Voting has largely been peaceful in the state but some videos have emerged showing pro-APC supporters insisting on the party or tribe that can be allowed to vote.

In one of the videos seen by this newspaper, the head of the Lagos state branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, could be heard threatening to resist any Igbo who attempted to vote.

“Any Igbo wen dem born well, make e come vote again; me I dey here,” Mc Oluomo said as a police officer standing by tapped him on the back as if trying to appease him as voters stood watching to see what would happen.

A second video captured a man clearly telling voters they would only be allowed to vote for the APC party.

The other applicants in the suit are: African Democratic Congress, Boot Party, and their governorship candidates, Funsho Doherty, and Wale Oluwo respectively.

Court sustains order forbidding INEC from engaging MC Oluomo for elections service

Recall that the court had on Monday, February 20, granted an interim order on the issue before adjourning to hear the substantive case. A hearing in the substantive case came up on Wednesday after which the court adjourned till Friday (today) for its judgment.

    The applicants through their lawyer, Abass Ibrahim, in a motion on notice filed before the court, had asked for the following reliefs;

“A declaration that the appointment, partnership, or contracting of Musiliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo-led Lagos State Parks Management Committee by INEC to distribute 2023 election materials and personnel in Lagos State violates Section 26 and 27 of the Electoral Act 2022 and consequently unlawful, null and void.

A declaration that the appointment, partnership, or contracting of Musiliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo-led Lagos State Parks Management Committee (established by Governor Babajide SanwoOlu, the APC gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State) and any of its members and/or drivers by INEC to distribute election materials and personnels in Lagos State will give room for election sabotage, manipulation, and rigging in favour of the APC and consequently unlawful and illegal.

A declaration that the appointment, partnership, or contracting of Musiliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo-led Lagos State Parks Management Committee or any of its members and/or drivers by INEC to distribute 2023 election materials and personnels in Lagos State is unlawful, wrongful, unjust and/or unreasonable and should be immediately stopped.

Court forbids INEC from engaging MC Oluomo in elections

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has stopped the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) from engaging the services of the chairman of Lagos Parks and Garages, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, in distributing materials for the 2023 general elections.

The injunction was granted by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke following an application filed by the Labour Party, LP, its gubernatorial candidate in Lagos state, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and four others.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that INEC was absent at the proceedings. However, a lawyer for the Labour Party told the court that the commission was served with the court papers.

The order of interlocutory injunction granted restrains the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, (defendant/respondent), whether by itself or by its officers, affiliates, servants, privies or agents or any person acting or purporting to act for and on behalf howsoever from taking any steps or further steps whatsoever in furtherance of the engagement or appointment or consummating the appointment of Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo-led Lagos State Parks Management Committee or any of its commercial bus drivers to distribute 2023 election materials and personnel in Lagos State pending the hearing and determination the substantive suit.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that INEC in Lagos State had reacted to a backlash following a letter written by MC Oluomo asking the electoral umpire to contract the distribution of materials to him, saying it (INEC) was engaging parks managers in the state and not MC Oluomo.

The Residential Electoral Commissioner for Lagos State, Olusegun Agbaje, had said, ”“On the issue of MC Oluomo, the commission is not concerned with Oluomo. We are concerned with the issue of motor park administration in Lagos.

“For the past two years, the Lagos State government has banned the operations of the NURTW and RTEAN in the state. They had problems and the state government banned them.

““So we are left with Lagos State Park and Garages and the National Association of Road Transport Owners,” adding that NARTO, which, according to him, the commission was already working with, “is not able to meet up with the 40 per cent needs of the commission for this election,” hence the commission’s consideration of engaging the MC Oluomo-led Lagos State Parks and Garages.

“We are not dealing with MC Oluomo,” Agbaje had said, adding that “we are dealing with park managers. They are individual persons that have vehicles that we are going to use for the elections.

“The law has already banned the NURTW from operating in the state so we cannot violate the law by patronising them.

“It will be we working against the law if we have to be working with the banned associations. So it cannot work.”

  • Lagos REC will not be redeployed – INEC

Lagos REC will not be redeployed – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will not redeploy the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Lagos State, Mr Segun Agbaje over unfounded allegations.

The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi  in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja urged those demanding Agbaje’s redeployment to perish the thought.

There have been demands for Agbaje’s removal over alleged mismanagement of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) collection in some parts of Lagos and engagement of Musiliu Akinsanya (aka MC Oluomo)- led Lagos State Parks Management Committee to convey election materials.

Oyekanmi implored the two political parties calling for Agbaje’s redeployment to respect the boundaries of the relationship between the commission and all political parties.

He dismissed the allegations against the REC, describing it as deliberate misinformation and distortion of facts.

“Let me make one thing clear upfront. Mr Agbaje will not be removed as the REC for Lagos over unfounded allegations.

“He will not only conduct the Presidential/National Assembly election scheduled for Feb. 25, he will also superintend over the Governorship/State House of Assembly election holding on 11th March.

“He is a conscientious, honest, dependable and hardworking REC. His integrity speaks for him in all the places where he had served.

“Let me break this down for you. During the recent Continuous Voter Registration that took place between June 2021 and July 2022, Lagos State under Agbaje registered the highest number of voters in the country – 585,629.

“On Jan. 27 this year, we announced that out of the 940,200 PVCs delivered to Lagos State as of that date, 839,720 PVCs representing 89.3 percent had been collected.

“This debunks the allegation that the Lagos REC deliberately withheld the PVCs belonging to persons from a particular region of the country.”

On the movement of election materials in Lagos state, Oyekanmi said that INEC was engaging individual vehicle owners.

He said “the unions don’t have vehicles and even if they have some, they cannot possibly provide the number of vehicles that the commission requires to conduct the general election.

“Rather, the unions are made up of individuals that own vehicles.

“You then have to negotiate with the vehicle owners and join the unions as witnesses and for accountability purposes.”

Oyekanmi reminded Nigerians that INEC had been conducting elections successfully in Lagos using individuals that own vehicles that met its specification.

He assured Lagosians and those who intend to vote in Lagos state that their votes will count.

  • Our contract is with individual drivers, not MC Oluomo – INEC

Our contract is with individual drivers, not MC Oluomo – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says its contract for logistics delivery for the forthcoming general elections in Lagos State is with individual drivers and not with Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, made the clarification in an interview with NAN on Friday in Abuja.

Okoye was reacting to the raised concerns and controversies on plan by INEC to engage Lagos Park Management Committee under MC Oluomo leadership for transportation of election materials and personnel in the forthcoming elections in the state.

He said the role of road transport union was to assist the commission to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with commission and the drivers to be engaged for election duty.

He urged Nigerians to stop linking INEC with an individual, saying the commission’s commitment was to the individual drivers.

“This commission has contract with individual drivers. The National Union of Road Transport Workers has no vehicles. So, we signed individual contract with all the persons who are going to provide vehicles for us.

“For this election we are going to hire at least 138,000 vehicles. We are going to hire over 4,000 boats and we are going to hire over 8,000 motorcycles.

“We are going to sign individual contract with all these people. The only thing the road transport union workers does for us is that we have what we call a Memorandum of Understanding with them, so that if for instance any of the members goes AWOL, they will help us track the person down.

“If somebody does not report on time, they will help us find out why the person has not reported on time. But our contract is with individual drivers,” he said.

Okoye urged Nigerians to stop linking INEC with an individual, saying the commission’s commitment was to the individual drivers.

“The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Lagos State has never said that we are going to work with individual you have mentioned.

“What he said was that if there’s no NURTW in Lagos, but Park Management Committee, that we are going to work with the committee, because we cannot be seen to be breaking the law.

“So, that is the issue. People should banish this whole idea of linking the commission to an individual.

“Our commitment is to the individual drivers that are going to sign a contract with and we are also going to take oath of neutrality and oath of allegiance to the commission, and that is where we stand on the matter,” he said.

Several individual and groups, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have raised concern on the use of the Park Management Committee in Lagos by INEC
