INEC clarifies working with MC Oluomo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it has no option but to engage Lagos State Parks Management Committee to distribute election materials and personnel in the State on election days.

Mr Olusegun Agbaje, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos State said this during the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) meeting at INEC office on Tuesday in Lagos.

Agbaje was responding to questions on controversies around the engagement of the Parks Management Committee led by Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (aka MC Oluomo), a Lagos APC Chieftain, to distribute election materials.

Recall that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State had banned the operations of the Nation Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in the state and set up Park Management Committees to administer operations.

The PDP’s Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has, however, warned INEC not to use the Parks Management Committee led by Akinsanya, a former NURTW Chairman and APC stalwart, to distribute election materials in order not to compromise the election’s integrity.

Abubakar, in a statement on Feb. 2 by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said that INEC must preserve the sanctity of the election and ensure that there is no room for electoral malpractice.

He said that in doing so, INEC must ensure that the MC Oluomo-led committee was not mobilised to move materials.

Shaibu maintained that Akinsanya remained a member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council and had held solidarity rallies for the party and its Presidential Candidate, Sen. Bola Tinubu.

Speaking on the controversies, Agbaje said that the commission was not concerned about the person Akinsanya but about individual drivers and vehicle owners, to meet up with the high volume of logistics needs for the elections.

“There is a ban on the NURTW and RTEAN, we are only left with the Park Management system and NARTO (National Association of Road Transport Owners) and we are already working with NARTO.

“NARTO is not even able to meet up with 40 per cent of our vehicle requirements for this election. The commission in Lagos State does not have any option than to use park management system.

“We are not dealing with Oluomo, we are dealing with the park managers. Individual people that have vehicles are those we are going to use.

“So, it will be working against the law if INEC has to continue to work with NURTW or any other group that is proscribed in the state,” the INEC boss said.

He, however, stressed that working with the state parks management committee would not reduce the credibility of the polls as the movement of electoral personnel and materials would be monitored by security agencies, party agents and observers.

“At the CBN (Central Bank Nigeria) where they are going to move our materials, there will be security agencies and party agents including the military to monitor and escort these vehicles from CBN to Local Government Areas (LGAs).

“So, I don’t see how this can compromise the election in any way. Our politicians should see the peculiarity in Lagos State; we cannot work with banned NURTW or RTEAN.

“We need over 5,000 vehicles for this election, including trucks, buses and so on to carry our people and materials for the elections. There is no other way we can go.

“We cannot go to other states and bring vehicles here, it is not allowed by law. The only way we can operate is through the park management system.

“These are the only people that can give us any type of vehicles. In fact, most of the NURTW drivers are working with the park management system,” he added.

Agbaje assured that the commission would not use any politically branded vehicle for the elections, such as any vehicle carrying the logo of a party or image of any candidate.

He said that some other states, including Oyo State, a PDP controlled state, had the same challenge where the commission had no option than to use the state park management system put in place by the state government.

“This has not in any way and will not in any way  compromise the election,” he said.

The 2023 general elections begin with the presidential and National Assembly polls on Feb. 25, followed by the governorship and states Houses of Assembly elections on March 11.

Chairman of the Lagos state parks and garages management committee, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, on Sunday, held Lagos State to a standstill as he led a five million-man rally for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu.

The rally which took off from Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, led to traffic gridlock in some parts of the state.

MC Oluomo had announced a massive rally for Tinubu after supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, marched on various streets of Lagos last week.

Prior to the five million-man rally, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) announced a traffic diversion for the rally.

Lagos state agency advised motorists from Eko Bridge inwards Surulere to pass through the stadium bridge to Funsho Williams avenue and connect to their destination through Ojuelegbe to Lawanson-Itire road.

During the march across streets in Lagos, shouts of “Awa Lokan”, “Se Jagaban”, “Tinubu for President” rend the air.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the rally took place amid heavy downpour, vehicular and human movements were paralyzed in Lagos in the early hours on Sunday.

It was gathered that the rally, tagged “Mother of all Rallies,” was sponsored by MC Oluomo.

Armed security personnel, led by Nigeria Police, Department of State Service, DSS, and Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps. LNSC, among others, provided protection and security for residents and participants.

According to MC Oluomo, the decision to hold the rally as earlier scheduled followed approval by APC chieftains and stakeholders in the state.

According to MC Oluomo, “This is a mega rally, we are shutting Lagos down for Asiwaju Tinubu and Sanwo-Olu.

“This is to show our support, strength and capacity for APC candidates because they are the best for the job at hand.”

The APC supporters, who defied the early downpour, converged at the entrance of Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere as early as 7.00 a.m with the rally terminating at Bolade Oshodi with a funfair at noon.

Addressing the supporters, MC Oluomo, who is the former Chairman of the proscribed National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) said the walk became imperative to demonstrate the massive support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition.

He said the former Lagos state governor who laid the foundation for the progressive development of the state had the character, capacity and competence to provide leadership that everyone would be proud of in the country.

According to him, Tinubu has the experience and ability to replicate all the visible developments in Lagos state at the Federal level if given the opportunity.

Also speaking, Mr Waheed Seriki, one of the leaders of APC support group in the rally said: “Asiwaju Tinubu is prepared to change the narrative of the challenges facing the nation.

“Some areas that will enjoy priority of the incoming Tinubu’s administration include insecurity, power generation and employment creation.”

Several political support groups of different presidential candidates have been staging solidarity walks in support of their candidates.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifted the ban on campaigns in public by political parties officially on Sept. 28.

The electoral umpire fixed Feb. 25, 2023, for national elections (Presidential and National Assembly) and March 11 for State elections (Governorship and State Assembly).

In a statement, MC Oluomo had explained that the solidarity walk tagged five-million-man walk is being held to support the presidential bid of Tinubu and the re-election bid of the Lagos State Governor, Bababjide Sanwo-Olu, and his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

“This is to inform our esteemed members, supporters and lovers that our solidarity walk for the actualisation of Tinubu-Shettima Presidential ambition and the second term of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu/Hamzat will still hold as earlier scheduled. We implore you all to disregard the earlier postponement notice,” he stated.

Tinubu’s sticker sales: “I did not know anything about it”- MC Oluomo

Chairman, Lagos State Park and Garages Management Committee, Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo, has denied knowledge of the sale of stickers bearing the image of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, to tricycle (aka Keke) drivers.

A trending video shows Keke drivers objecting to pay to have the stickers on their vehicles. According to a tweep who posted the video, the incident happened in the Ajah area of Lagos. The alleged transport workers charged the drivers N500 per sticker.

Reacting to the video, MC Oluomo said in a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday night that he was not involved in it.

“My attention has yet again been drawn to a video clip circulating online showing an altercation between two people as regards a sticker,” MC Oluomo said.

“It came to me as a surprise seeing that people were attaching the video to me and were also quick to state that it was a campaign fee to support the election of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu's sticker sales: "I did not know anything about it"- MC Oluomo

“Naturally I would have just ignored knowing that it’s the handiwork of naysayers. Being in an election session, I also know their malicious intentions and the cheap political goal they aim to get with the video. I am however compelled for the sake of clarity to set the record straight.

“I did not know anything about the said sticker, neither did I sanction the sale. I would appreciate additional information as regards the location where the incident happened so that we can conduct thorough investigation.

“We are against anything that would hamper the free flow of business activities or bring hardship upon our people. May I also inform the public that the APC Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has more than enough people willing to finance his campaign and such money would not come from me or my office.

“I want to urge our people to be vigilant and remember that we are in an election period, as such, political parties would be looking for ways, both ethical and unethical, to outsmart themselves. I however implore them to leave me out of their political permutations and stop maligning my name for the sake of cheap popularity.”

He became the head of a motor park in Oshodi and finally rose to become the most influential “agbero” in Oshodi before he emerged as the chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Lagos.

Tinubu scored 1, 271 from the total 2, 102 votes cast by delegates in the APC’s keenly contested primaries, as announced by the chairman and returning officer of the election committee Abubakar Bagudu, during a special convention held in Abuja on Wednesday June 8. Thirteen votes form the election were void.

Despite Tinubu’s seeming track record of relentless commitment to the democracy and mentorship to new generation and future leaders, the party found it extremely difficult to project him as a consensus candidate and eventually opted for the ballot.

Justifying his claim, Tinubu noted how he transformed of Lagos “from a dangerous, unwelcoming” place in 1999 to “a clean, safe and vibrant place” and the sixth-largest economy in Africa today.

“I’m a unifying leader. I have constructed a formidable political structure, one that has delivered electoral victory after electoral victory. I do not put myself forward because I think this is a nomination; I step forward because I believe I can lead our party toward the brightest future.

“I have expertise. My record of corporate leadership, my financial expertise, and my experience as an executive governor of Lagos makes me unique among other aspirants,” the former governor said.
