    FG appoints new medical directors

The Federal Government, via the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has announced the appointment of new Medical Directors for two significant health institutions in Northern Nigeria.

Dr. Haruna Shehu will serve as the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre Kafanchan, located in Kaduna State, while Dr. Ali Ramat has been designated to oversee the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Azare, Hawul, Borno State.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, formally presented the appointment letters to the newly appointed directors during a brief ceremony held in Abuja on Monday, March 17, 2025.

These appointments are part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing access to quality healthcare services in Northern Nigeria.

Salako underscored the government’s dedication to fortifying healthcare institutions and stressed the critical role that the new directors will play in tackling the challenges faced by these federal health facilities.

“These are new hospitals; so naturally, you will face some initial challenges.

“Kafanchan is particularly special to the President due to his keen interest in that part of Kaduna State.

Salako encouraged the appointees to connect with community stakeholders and synchronize their initiatives with the President’s healthcare objectives.

In his closing remarks, Shehu conveyed his appreciation for the confidence shown in them and pledged to promote the administration’s healthcare vision while striving for excellence in service delivery.

No proven medical evidence regular ‘other room activities ‘prevents prostate cancer – Urologist

A consultant urologist, Dr. Odezi Otobo, has said there is no medical or urological evidence having regular sex and ejaculation reduces a man’s risk of coming down with prostate cancer.

Otobo, who works with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, said this at a medical outreach for men organised by Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Calabar.

The outreach, which was held at the premises of the Christian Central Chapel International, Calabar, is part of programmes to commemorate “Movember.”

Movember, which involves the growing of mustaches, is an annual event held in November to raise awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s mental health.

The urologist, who was reacting to claims on social media that constant intimacy and having multiple girlfriends could prevent prostate cancer, said the disease was either hereditary, caused by lifestyle, or environmental.

“Instead of taking unprofessional and unscientific advice from different quarters, it is important to visit a hospital if you notice anything, and for those in their forties and fifties, get screened because early detection is key to effective treatment of cancer.

“Prostate cancer is indolent cancer and can be handled when a man is aware, visits a medical facility, and changes his lifestyle, not by having multiple ‘side chicks,’ he said.

On his part, Mr Yegwa Ukpo, the Executive Director, Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre, said they had to commemorate Movember because men’s health issues were hardly addressed in society.

Represented by Mrs Mercy Njoku, Event and Outreach Manager of the centre, Ukpo said there was something about masculinity in a society that made men think they had to keep their issues to themselves.

“I want to appeal to the men to take their health seriously because cases of men slumping and dying in their forties and fifties are on the increase; we don’t want this to continue.

Medical Quackery: Nigerians decry regulatory failure, obsolete laws

… demand capital punishment for culprits

Nigerians and professionals in the health sector have lamented the growing menace of quackery in the country, blaming regulatory failures, obsolete laws and the government’s lack of will to check the evil act.

Experts and citizens raised these concerns during a radio town hall meeting on Public Sector Integrity in Nigeria, organized by the Progressive Impact Organisation for Community Development, PRIMORG, at the weekend in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, the President of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Dr. Casimir Ifeanyi stated that quackery business is motivated by monetary gain and has continued to flourish over the years in the country over “non-compliance to standard, failure of regulatory bodies to do their job and lack of political will on the side of the government.”

Ifeanyi, while declaring medical quackery and negligence as the highest killers of citizens, lamented the growing number of ‘guarded and protected’ quacks in public hospitals and health facilities across the country.

His words: “Quackery is seemingly lucrative, and regulation has failed. We have regulatory institutions. We have a regulatory framework. Unfortunately, these institutions seemingly lack the idea of how to carry on with the mandate of their office, so that they can’t be effective at safeguarding the lives of Nigerians.

“Secondly, the want of political will on the part of the government to free up the regulatory institutions has been provided in the enabling laws. Every profession has a charter. It is the charter that offers the rights of the practitioner and the duties of the practitioner that serve as a safeguard for the practitioner and those who receive services from them.

“It’s more pathetic when quackery happens in public health institutions. I am more concerned with this kind of guarded and protected quackery that happens under political protection. We need to speak to it.

“I have never seen the Medical Lab Science Association of Nigeria enter into any public hospital to say we want to look at the labs and the credentials of the practitioners. Why is that not happening? Guarded and protected quackery we need to address. It is very important and pertinent.,” Ifeanyi stated.

He urged the government and its institutions to get regulations right if they must stamp out quackery while assuring that AMLSN, under his watch, will continue to engage public hospitals and facilities on quackery issues.

On her part, the Managing Director at Americare Medical Group, Dr. Chichi Iwuamadi, said quackery was seriously ravaging the health sector; hence, Nigerians must be educated on the dangers of entrusting their lives to medical quacks.

According to Iwuamadi, Nigeria’s health industry is already in a state of emergency, noting that the absence of integrity in the society and pervasive corruption were encouraging medical quackery.

She, however, called for more sensitization of the general public on the effect of quacks.

“The ravaging of quacks’ practice in Nigeria cannot be underestimated. What is going on in the country is heartbreaking because people, out of deception, come to trust people who don’t have the ability and the licensing to take care of them. That means you are giving yourself to somebody who doesn’t have the capacity to take care of you,” Iwuamadi stated.

Legal Practitioner Ugo Nwofor called for a review of the existing anti-quackery laws in Nigeria, describing them as old and Obsolete. He stressed that the punishment for quackery should be made a capital offence in Nigeria.

“Quackery deals with everybody’s life, and laws are very obsolete when it comes to quackery.

“The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria act, particularly section 17 that deals with quackery, is not even detailed. It states that if you are not licensed and you practice as a doctor or in a related field, you pay a fine of 5,000 to 10,000 naira, and you go to jail for five years. That should be a capital offence. What’s the minister doing there? Nwofor queried.

Chris Obiaro, a disability inclusion expert, called for standardization of Nigeria’s public health system against quacks, disclosing that Persons with Disabilities (PWD) are very much affected by the menace of quackery.

He said, “Quackery has contributed to causes of disabilities because taking the wrong medication has led to so many people being persons with disabilities today and even applying wrong treatments prescribed by quack nurses or quack doctors has also led to some disabilities today. So PWDs go through a whole lot, and as you know, you cannot separate disability from poverty

“I think the government needs to do more on the strict laws against quackery. Again, there should be a lot of public enlightenment so that those who patronize them will actually make the decision to stop. This would go a long way,” Obiora said.

The PRIMORG’s Town Hall Meeting Against Corruption series is aimed at calling the public and government attention to specific issues of corruption in Nigeria.

The syndicated radio program runs with support from the MacArthur Foundation.

Panic As Ambrose Alli Varsity Medical Students Asked To Sign Undertaking for over 12 years duration

A medical student at the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Benin State has expressed his dissatisfaction with X against an undertaking that could extend the duration of students’ time in school to over 12 years.

The 300-level medical student disclosed that they were given an undertaking to sign while they were sitting for their Part 1 MBBS exams.

Sharing the undertaking on His X account on Wednesday, the student wrote, “Forcing students to sign an undertaking like this on the day of their exam is madness. Even cults don’t operate like this. You’re asking people who have already spent five years in the school to sign away their future, and every opportunity to get justice?

“These are children with dreams. How can a school be so shameless? They paid their fees, paid all the money you asked for, and the government paid your salaries, and this is how you’re going to treat your students? Is it because your children are not here? Are we not someone’s child?

According to the undertaking, the students are required to wait for available space to continue their course, enroll in an 18-month BSc programme in Anatomy or Physiology to stay occupied and commit to regular fee payments during the waiting period.

The undertaking also prohibits students from engaging in protests or acts that could harm the college and university’s image. The directive was issued on the day of their examination.

According to the undertaking, the students were required to agree to three conditions.

It reads: “I hereby undertake as follows:

“1. After my Part 1 MBBS (Professional) Examination, I will undertake an 18-month intercalated BSc programme in Anatomy or Physiology in the College of Medicine.

“2. I will wait until anytime there is space for me to proceed to Clinical (400 Level) before I will do so.

“3. I will continue to pay school fees as a medical student.”
