Police arrest medical doctor with 3 abducted children

The Police Command in Benue on Sunday said a medical doctor has been arrested in Rivers over the disappearance of three children from Benue.

The medical doctor, whose name was not given, was arrested by the police in Rivers following an alert on the missing children.

A statement signed by the command spokesman, SP Sewuese Anene in Makurdi, said that the children were found in the doctor’s custody in Rumuokoro.

Anene said the Command had on Sept. 24, received a complaint from one Mr Godwin Kpaakpa of Badagry Street, Opposite St. Peters Church Wurukum, Makurdi that two of his children were missing.

Anene said that the children, Philomena and Benedict, were aged six and about two years.

She said the command commenced an investigation and sent a signal nationwide, adding that the two children and one other were recovered in the hands of the doctor during an operation.

“On Oct. 20, information was received from Rivers Police Command that in the course of an operation at, Rumuokoro area, they rescued three children from a medical doctor that seem to be the same children earlier reported by Benue Command.

“A team of detectives was sent to Rivers state for identification and other necessary actions.

“Fortunately, the two children were identified alongside one other child, Godsgift Julius, whose parents are yet to be identified.

“Philomena and Benedict have been reunited with their family while Godsgift is yet to connect with his family.

“The medical doctor is being investigated by Rivers Command while efforts are being made to locate his accomplices in Benue,” she added.

The Command spokesperson advised parents to monitor the movement of their children to save them from human traffickers.

Abducted Borno doctor released after 11 months in ISWAP’s captivity

The Principal Medical Director of Gubio General Hospital, Borno State, Dr. Geidam Bulama, who was abducted in March 2022, by the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP), has regained freedom.

Bulama was abducted last year when ISWAP attacked Gubio Local Government Area which is about 70kms from Maiduguri.

According to a report, Zagazola Makama, a Counter- Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad Region, reported that during the abduction of Bulama, the insurgents had promised his wife that they would not kill him.

Sources said that the insurgents took Bulama and other abducted victims to the fringes of Lake Chad where he was forced to treat wounded fighters and their families for several months.

A source said efforts of the state government and the security agencies led to the release of Bulama.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that before he was abducted last year, Bulama was the only doctor covering the entire Gubio Local Government Area.

“It is very unfortunate that the security situation in Gubio town is deteriorating these days, as we have started witnessing Boko Haram invasion without confrontation,” a resident disclosed shortly after the abduction of Bulama.

The sources did not disclose if a ransom was paid before his release of Bulama.

Recall that residents of Gubio town near Maiduguri, Borno State, had shed light on the abduction of Bulama.

Bulama, said to be the only doctor covering the entire Gubio local government area, was abducted by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists from his residence near a military formation.

A resident said the assailants returned about 30 minutes after abducting the doctor and set houses on fire.

“It is very unfortunate that the security situation in Gubio town is deteriorating these days, as we have started witnessing Boko Haram invasion without confrontation,” the resident said.

“Unlike before where the former Caretaker Chairman of Gubio, Hon Modu Gubio used to allocates resources to the security apparatus and provision of operational vehicles to our Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF/hunters/Vigilantes in complementing efforts of the military and other security agencies in the council, the present administration under the Chairman, Bukar Sulum Zowo is not doing anything in these regards; the neglect aggravated the recent attacks.”

The council chairman Zowo debunked the allegations, saying “I want to debunk that no Boko Haram member set a house ablaze in Gubio. It was a fire incident which is a natural disaster that took place a day before the abduction.

Sad! Medical Doctor allegedly murdered in his private clinic in Delta

    …as family demands justice

A Medical Doctor identified as Dr. Uyi Iluobe has been allegedly killed in his hospital in Delta state.

Dr Uyi Iluobe a young Nigerian doctor, entrepreneur and an ordained minister with the Church of God Mission Ministries, was gruesomely murdered in his privately-owned hospital (Olive clinic) in the town of Oghara-eki by unknown assailants on the evening of 29th December 2022 while everyone was busy with end of year preparations.

At a time when most doctors are dumping the country for greener pastures abroad those who stayed back are falling victims to the poor security situation of the country.

Dr Uyi stayed back and established a clinic that provides care to the people of Oghara-eki.

Sources close to the family have revealed that Dr Uyi has received numerous threats in the course of his selfless services either by patients who do not want to pay for services rendered or those who felt that he was a foreigner in the land and should offer free care to them by force.

Few days before he was assassinated a gunshot victim was brought to the hospital and in following the laws, he advised that they would need to provide a police report while treatment is commenced but they rather insisted that the victim be treated off police notification.

He refused and they took the gunshot victim away angry and furious.

On the day of the attack, he was in the consulting room with a patient (who is currently at large).

The patient was said to have come in with severe pains and was being reviewed urgently without registration in medical records when suddenly the assailants came in and shot him dead.

The lady (supposed patient) and the assassins left hurriedly in a car parked outside the hospital while other hospital staffs were all lying face down and in fear.

This is the most gruesome manner to kill a doctor who places the wellbeing of the community he serves in high esteem.

The body of the late doctor has been deposited in the mortuary while the security agencies are making efforts to fish out his killers.

It is the prayers of family, friends and well-meaning Nigerians that the Nigerian security agents catch his killers and reveal the true motivations behind this assassination.

Nigeria vs Ghana: NFF mourns Zambian medical official who died of cardiac arrest

The Nigeria Football Federation has expressed shock and sorrow over the death of FIFA/CAF Medical Officer, Dr Joseph Kabungo, who died on Tuesday after the FIFA World Cup playoff match between Nigeria and Ghana at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. Dr Kabungo was appointed as Doping Control Officer for the match.

“We are terribly shocked at this sad development. The NFF commiserates with world football –body FIFA, the Confederation of African Football, the Football Association of Zambia and the family of Dr Kabungo on his sudden passing. His death pains us very much and we are in a state of deep shock.

“However, it is important to state the facts as they are. According to the information from our own medical officer, Dr Onimisi Ozi Salami who was appointed by FIFA as Medical Officer for the game, Dr Kabungo was found gasping for breath near the dressing room of the Ghanaian team. I was notified and ordered that he should be rushed to the hospital. He didn’t make it. He died just as they got to the hospital,” NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi said.

Dr Ozi Salami told thenff.com that the incident happened when he (Dr Salami) was looking to get the Nigerian player for the doping exercise, while Dr Kabungo was looking to get the Ghanaian player for the same exercise.

“I was heading to the dressing room of the Nigerian team when the General Coordinator, Kabore Hubert Bosilong from South Africa called my attention. Dr Kabungo suddenly started gasping for breath. The FIFA Security Officer for the match, Mr Dixon Adol Okello from Uganda also witnessed the incident.

“We tried to resuscitate him there and then, but when this did not appear to be working, we put him in an ambulance and rushed him to Cedar Crest Hospital in Apo, where he gave up the ghost. It is a very sad incident and one is shocked that some persons have been putting a terrible slant to the whole thing by saying he was beaten up by fans. That is a lie. He died as a result of sudden cardiac arrest.”

Officials of the NFF, the medical team and officials of the High Commission of Zambia held a meeting on Wednesday morning to decide on the next line of action following the demise of Dr Kabungo.

  • Medicine, Law, other ‘dying’ careers you may want to steer clear of

Medicine, Law, other ‘dying’ careers you may want to steer clear of

By Neale Godfrey, Financial Literacy Expert, President & CEO

No one has a crystal ball, but we are in a time of great change, and we want our skills to be relevant and needed moving forward. And just as important, we want our kids and grandkids to have happy and fulfilling jobs. Which brings us to an important question: What jobs are likely to disappear or become obsolete over the next decade or so?

    Jobs That Disappeared

If you were a carriage maker in the 1900s, it would be a hard conversation to have with your kids who came home to tell you about this new machine that was invented, the automobile. You may have said, “It’s a fad. It’s noisy, it breaks down, it goes slow, it gets stuck in the mud and manure, it’s expensive … it will never replace the horse and buggy.”

Can you imagine when people first saw the airplane? It may have been impossible to think that it would change the way people moved across the ocean.

Or, remember when you saw the first cordless phone, and it looked like a shoe box? Did you ever think that your trusted home phone could be replaced by a cellphone?

You get the point. What I want to highlight is that all of these new ways of doing things greatly impacted the jobs and people who worked in these soon-to-be obsolete industries. Think of all of the farriers (horseshoers) who lost their jobs as the car took over the world of local transportation. Think of the cruise ship owners and workers who were replaced by the advent of air travel. And we know how the world of the internet exploded the world of personal and business communication. If you are not knowledgeable about computer technology, you may not have a seat at the new worktable.

What Industries Will Become Obsolete in the Future?

I want to put a disclaimer on this list. No one knows for sure which professions will or will not exist or how they will morph into new incantations of themselves. Here are some that I have been thinking about:

    • Real Estate Agent: The old days of having a person pick out a home for you to tour are swiftly slipping away. There are so many sites to help you choose the location, school system, amenities, etc. of a new home, that real estate agents are starting to disappear. As the final stages of where you want to live come closer, you may want the help of a real person, but the fees they charge are coming under pressure as their value diminishes.
    • Truck/Taxi Driver: Driverless technology is advancing quickly. It’s estimated that roughly 33 million autonomous vehicles will be on the road by 2040.
    • Doctor: This is controversial, because so many people want to be taken care of by a live person. The pandemic ushered in the transition to telehealth. I believe that we are about to witness another revolution. No one doctor has all of the knowledge to diagnose a patient, and they do not have all of the historical data and possible treatments at their fingertips. As soon as global medical data becomes available, the computer can diagnose, research DNA, and set about a cure for the vast majority of people. Today, not all medical data is shared.
    • Librarian: It pains me, but gone will be the days of researching or reading in a library. The digital library is at everyone’s fingertips.
    • Cashier: In the old days, there had to be a person to check you out, take your money and give you change or charge your credit card. We are rapidly moving into becoming a cashless society. Gone will be the need to even learn the life skill of making change; our computers will perform all of the banking needs we have. Amazon, through its Amazon Go brick-and-mortar stores, is experimenting with a new checkout system. You scan an Amazon Go app at a turnstile when you enter and just exit without checking out when you leave.
    • Delivery Driver/Mail Carrier: As drones get more sophisticated, there will not be a need for humans to deliver packages and mail. Much of your junk mail has already been converted into junk email. Even Social Security has abandoned physical checks, and many utility companies are moving in that direction with their billing, too.
    • Bank Worker: Banks are going to physically downsize, as much of our monetary transactions are done digitally. Bank branches will begin to close as online banking increases. Millennials are also using digital solutions for their investing needs. The fin tech world is exploding with new mobile investing devices, as well. As people become more comfortable with investing digitally, it will mean there will be fewer and fewer live financial advisers and bank personal.
    • Sports Referee/Umpire: Even soccer’s governing body, FIFA is relenting to pressure to introduce more technology into the game with video assistant referees. Many other sports, such as tennis, also have been using technology to make real-time decisions.
    • Fishers: We have overfished our waters in many places, and global warming is negatively impacting remaining species of fish. If we are to eat fish in the future, it will most likely be farm raised. The typical fisher will no longer be able to go out and fish.
    • Lawyer/Legal Secretary: Deloitte has indicated that over the next 20 years, 114,000 legal jobs could be automated. It is similar to the medical profession. Our digital world can instantaneously provide case history and feed your data into a system to find your legal solutions. The documentation could also be filed electronically.
    • Factory Workers: Automation is already interrupting these professions. It is estimated that there will be shrinkage of over 204,000 jobs by 2029.
    • Travel Agent: Before the internet, it was really great to talk to a live person who could help you cobble together your whole vacation. That professional could get you the best hotel and accommodations at the best rates. Today, there are many easy-to-use websites and apps that can help you research and book every part of your vacation. Employment for travel agents is expected to fall 26% from 2019 to 2029.
    • Don’t Be Bummed, Be Inspired

My goal was not to depress you if you or your loved ones are in any of these industries. It is just to get you thinking about the future so that you can be on the forefront of the new world with new job opportunities.

This can make for great dinner conversation with your kids. Ask them what they see in the future and what jobs will disappear and what others will be created. Part of being a parent is to help our kids to be resilient to change.

Remember the words of Albert Einstein; “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”

NMA disowns ‘medical doctor’ with links to bandits in Zamfara State

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has denied media reports connecting medical doctors with banditry in Zamfara State.

This is contained in a statement signed in Gusau on Friday by the association’s state Chairman and Secretary, Dr Mannir Bature and Dr Remigius Nwachukwu.

“The attention of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Zamfara State Chapter, has been drawn to a publication from various media organisations with a caption, ‘Police in Zamfara arrest medical doctor, 7 others in connection with banditry.

“However, we will like to make it clear to the general public that the above caption, which emanated from a joint press statement between the state Ministries of Information and that of Security and Home Affairs is incorrect.

“Our investigation revealed that the said person is not a medical doctor, but a Medical Laboratory Technician, who is parading himself as a medical doctor to defraud unsuspecting individuals.

“The person is neither a resident nor does he work in Zamfara state.

“This clarification becomes necessary owing to the fact that only holder of MBBS, MBChB and BDS are entitled to be called medical doctor,” they said.
