The Nigerian Army held medical and educational outreaches targeted at vulnerable citizens in communities in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi on Monday.

The educational outreach was inaugurated by the Commander, 12 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Harunah Dasuki at the College of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Okene.

He distributed notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, sharpeners, erasers and other stationery to students of the college.

The medical outreach tested residents in communities for high blood pressure, diabetes, malaria and typhoid; administered polio vaccines and did general medical consultations.

Dasuki said the outreach was part of activities of on-going “Exercise Still Waters III’’ to reach out to less- privileged citizens in the society.

He noted that the Nigerian Army flagged off the exercise on Oct. 30 to facilitate Yuletide celebrations in its host communities.

The commander added that the medical and educational outreaches were part of army’s civil-military cooperation and commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. -Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, for facilitating the exercise.

“I assure you that the Nigerian Army would continue to ensure a secure environment for the people for economic activities to thrive.

“We appeal to people in communities to provide adequate and timely information about criminality in their areas to enable us to keep the areas safe,’’ he said.

Responding, Mr Yusuf Suleiman, Secretary, Okene Local Government Council, who represented the chairman, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Muhammad, expressed appreciation of the army’s gesture.

He said the gesture would go a long way to improve the health of the people and enhance the academic performance of the students.

Expressing appreciation of the gesture, one of the beneficiaries, Mrs Jemilat Nuhu, said she was given anti-malaria and typhoid drugs after a medical test.

“Mosquito will no longer bite me and my baby since the army has given us insecticide-treated mosquito net,’’ a nursing mother said.

Representatives of students at the college also assured the army that they would use the materials provided judiciously.

Earlier, Dasuki visited the Margaret Garba Ohiani Orphanage Home, Lokoja, where he donated food items and cash to less-privileged children.

Mrs Regina Ejembi, who received the items on behalf of the orphanage home, appreciated the army for the gesture, saying it would go a long way to take care of the vulnerable children.

Minister inaugurates integrated medical outreach for women in FCT

The FCT Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Aliyu, on Sunday in Abuja inaugurated an Integrated Medical Outreach, in Karshi to be conducted across all the 62 political wards in the territory.

Newsmen reports that the free medical outreach powered by Nigerians Unite for Tinubu/Shettima Mandate was targeted at the vulnerables in the hard-to-reach communities.

The minister stated that the gesture was to provide to the indigent residents, particularly women and children, good quality, high impact Primary Health Care (PHC) services including immunisation and nutrition.

Aliyu said that the routine immunisation coverage and PHC services uptake across the area councils had been sub-optimal, partly due to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic that had further weakened the health system.

She said: “Access to basic healthcare services has been poor due to the presence of hard-to-reach communities, coupled with the rising cases of insecurity and sub-optimal performance of the public health system.

” In this line, the inauguration of the medical outreach for the integration of PHC service delivery and Immunisation in a mobile /outreach strategy is crucial.

“It is expected to, among others, strengthen immunisation and PHC service outputs through integration, particularly in the underserved, low performing wards of the FCT.”

She, however, affirmed that the medical outreach would serve as an avenue for the FCTA to provide the most needed interventions to community members.

Aliyu further said that they include health education and promotion of treatment of common illnesses; vaccination of under-five children and pregnant women.

She also said that the outreach would facilitate the distribution of long-lasting treated nets and family planning commodities and screening for non-communicable diseases.

They include; hypertension, diabetes, routine eye screening and screening for malnutrition; as well as linkages/referral services; among others.

Aliyu assured that the FCT Administration would continue to support all programmes and activities geared towards improving the quality of lives and health outcomes of all residents of the Territory particularly women and children.

She said, “our relevant Secretariats, Departments and Agencies had been re-positioned and given necessary supports to perform for better results.

“Working with Development Partners, access would be sustained to the underserved communities with optimal services uptake and utilisation through the activities of community managerial system for PHC in FCT.”

The minister appealed to religious and traditional leaders, stakeholders and other well-meaning Nigerians in the FCT to continue to support the Administration to provide better services.

In his remarks, the acting Executive Secretary, FCT PHC Board, Dr Isah Vatsa, lauded the group for the partnership with the Administration in providing quality healthcare services.

He said that the outreach would cover immunisation, consultation by medical personnel in three points, and laboratory screening for diabetes and malaria.

Other services include; provision of free drugs, eye screening with free glasses for those that need them, blood pressure screening, weight and temperature check.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says it has begun a five-day medical outreach for nearly 4,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Bayelsa.
Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, made this known in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
Daramola said the medical intervention holding at Igbogene Community in Yenagoa Local Government Area was an initiative of the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
He said that Abubakar had directed the NAF Medical Services unit to take necessary steps toward ameliorating the suffering of the victims of the flood disaster.
The director quoted Abubakar as saying that NAF would always be ready to deploy its resources in alleviating the hardship faced by Nigerians.
CAS urged the IDPs to take advantage of the high quality and free medical services that would be provided for them, saying that eye surgeries would be carried out at the NAF Medical Centre in Yenagoa.

  • Aged woman regains sight at Army medical outreach in Rivers

An aged woman, Mrs Margaret Okere, on Thursday regained her sight after undergoing an examination at the ongoing Nigerian Army medical outreach at Umuokwa Community, Igboh-Etche, Etche Local Government Area of Rivers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigerian Army is conducting educational and medical outreach programme in host communities where the ‘Exercise Crocodile Smile 2’ is going on.

Okere told newsmen during the programme that she had not been able to see for a long time.

I regained my sight after the doctors here examined me, gave me eye drop and eyeglass.

My grandson brought me here when he heard that there will be a military-free medical outreach. I give God the glory, as I can see very well now.

God bless the Nigerian military for carrying out this exercise,” she said.

Mrs Promise Okechukwu, a native of Umuokwa, said that she and her baby were examined and given the necessary drugs.
“Since I put to bed six months ago, my baby has been vomiting but today she has been taken care of free of charge by the army medical team.

I thank god and very grateful to the army for bringing this programme to my community,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Mr Samuel Nwankwo said that the army free medical programme was the first ever carried out in the community.

Nwankwo said that he was happy and thanked God for directing the army to come to his community.

Today, I have gotten the opportunity for my eye to be examined and necessary eye drop given to me.

I thank the army, they are not what people are saying they are, God bless them,” he said.

Mrs Lilian Nwala, another beneficiary, said that she was at the centre for medical examination.

They are very friendly, as the medical personnel were attending to us one after the other.

I’m happy for the drugs they have given me after the examination, and I pray this continue,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Mr Clement Emejuru urged the community to cooperate and get themselves treated.

Emejuru disclosed that he was examined by a dentist and all the drugs he needed had been given to him.

What the army is doing is very fantastic, they are helping us to be healthy and live longer.

The army has never carried out shooting in Igbo-Etche before, so this is not a programme to scare us but to keep us alive,” he said.

Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), represented by Maj.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, Chief of Logistics (Army), said that the outreach was a civic responsibility to create smooth relationship with host communities.

Buratai said that the army had always carried out positive activities in any community they were to ensure that the people were comfortable.

In some places that we are, if they don’t have water, we provide boreholes for them to get water, where there are medical challenges; we provide a solution for them.

Places where we think the primary or secondary school is lacking educational materials, we also provide for as part of our civic responsibility,” he said.

The COAS said that the rumoured military vaccine was a creation of miscreants that were not comfortable with military’s resolve to fix them.

The army has the responsibility of protecting the Nigerian people’s interest, so whatever people say to tarnish the Nigerian Army, we will not bulge by that.

These are mere propaganda by miscreants and disloyal citizens who go about tarnishing the image of the country and the army,” he added.

Dr Samuel Amaechi, the Eze Onyeishi-Agwuru of Igboh-Etche, commended the Nigerian Army for the free medical outreach and called on his subjects to take full advantage of the exercise.

While urging other agencies to emulate the gesture, the traditional ruler also called for the sustenance of the programme.
