  • We are not aware of Melaye’s recall move from Senate – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is not aware of any moves to recall Sen. Dino Malaye, representing Kogi West Senatorial District.

INEC Director of Voter Education and Publicity (VEP), Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, said this in an interview with newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.

Explaining the processes involved in recalling and elected lawmaker, Osaze-Uzzi said that a petition signed by at least 50 per cent of the registered voters in that senatorial district must be submitted to the commission.

“It is only when the petitioners get 50 per cent of the registered voters that they can submit a recall petition to the commission.

“That is when INEC can commence the recall process, but we have not received such petition.’’

Osaze-Uzzi said that upon the receipt of such petition, the commission would also embark on a verification, to ascertain whether the recall petition was actually signed by registered voters in that senatorial district.

He said that in conducting the verification of the signatures, the commission would also need to inform the senator involved and the petitioner, to set a date for agents from both sides to be involved in the exercise.

“It is only when we are satisfied with that, we now go for a referendum. That is what the constitution states.

“For now, we don’t know if anybody is trying to recall him until a petition is submitted to the commission.’’

The director further said that the commission would notify the public if anybody or group was able to mobilise the required number of signatures and send a petition to the commission.

Meanwhile, Melaye had alleged that Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi had released N200 million for the reported ongoing moves to recall him.

  • Melaye demands state of emergency in Kogi

Melaye demands state of emergency in Kogi

The lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, on Tuesday, told the Senate that a state of emergency should be declared in Kogi over the spate of security in the state.

Melaye, while raising a point of order at the plenary, denied that the person who was shot dead at the venue of the protest he organised on Monday was a student but a known suspected murderer in Kogi.

According him, the governor of the state, Yahaya Bello had sent his killer squad to attack him when he was addressing supporters on Monday.

He added that some of his supporters were injured during the attack.

“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, you will agree with me that Yahaya Bello’s killer squad who were harbored in government house invaded with shooting for 30 minutes until one of them was killed with wounded persons on my own side,” he said.

Dino asserted that there was obvious anarchy in Kogi, urging the declaration of emergency.

“You will recall that a bus belonging to administrator of Lokoja local government loaded with arms and ammunition exploded when it was set on fire at the venue, so boys have been armed against the State,” he added.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu urged security agents to handle the the situation in a professional manner.

  • Stop causing mayhem to save your dying career – Gov Bello tells Melaye

The governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, has told Senator Dino Melaye (representing Kogi West at the Senate), that he “can’t use violence to revive his drowning political career”.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Petra Onyegbule, the governor berated Melaye for causing the death of a protester.

Melaye had claimed on Monday that he escaped death after unknown gunmen attacked him as he was rounding off his speech at a rally in front of Kogi State Polytechnic.

    The gunmen also had cutlasses.

Traffic on Lokoja-Abuja highway was disrupted for almost one hour as motorists abandoned their vehicles and scampered for safety.

Traders at Lokoja main market also hurriedly abandoned their wares and escaped into nearby bushes and houses.

A student of the polytechnic simply identified as Saka Seidu and one other person were said to have been shot dead while two operatives of the DSS attached to Melaye sustained gunshot injuries.

Reacting to the disturbing incidents, Governor Bello urged the senator to “desist from further plunging the state into needless political crisis capable of threatening the peace and security”.

“The governor sincerely regrets the unfortunate incident and calls on the people, youth and students of Kogi to remain calm, law-abiding and refrain from taking laws into their hands in the face of imminent threat to their life and security, whilst assuring them of continued safety and maintenance of security in the state,” Bello said in a statement.

“He is appalled that despite his commitment towards ensuring safety and security for the indigenes and inhabitants of the state and endeavour to rid the state of insecurity and political thuggery, the embattled senator remains hell-bent on causing mayhem in the state in a bid to save his drowning political career.

“He hereby reiterates his firm commitment to ensuring continuous security and safety of lives and properties in the state as he vows not to relent in his administration’s lofty strides in securing the life of every inhabitant in the state.

“The governor calls on young people to desist from being readily available as cheap tools to malicious politicians’ devilish use and manipulation. He reiterated that their lives are precious and should not be sacrificed on the altar of any selfish politician’s political expediency.

“He called on the authorities to expedite action on the petition to ensure there is no repeat of today’s unfortunate incident.”

  • Recall of Melaye by Gov Bello, a futile attempt, misplacement of priorities – George-Olumoroti Olusola

    By George-Olumoroti Olusola

A political accident happened in 2015 when the person Kogi people voted for suddenly died leading to the imposition of an inexperienced political entity on the good people by forces external to Kogi politics ably supported by Senator Dino Melaye.

This miscarriage of justice has come full circle to hunt all those that were part of that macabre dance, and vindicated those of us that rejected and challenged the imposition.

Despite the huge resources that accrued to AYB in less than two years in office, the generality of Kogi people have suffered untold hardship in the hands of AYB, ranging from unpaid salaries and pensions for more than15 months, heightened insecurity, complete collapse of infrastructure (while other governors commission completed road projects, AYB flag off road construction efforts and non have been completed till date), our children in Kogi tertiary institutions have been at home for the past 5 months with no hope of resumption anytime soon.

The truth is, AYB never campaigned to the good people of Kogi, he did not even vote during the election, so inflicting pain on the people must have made sense to him since he neither laboured for the mandate nor make electoral promises during electioneering campaign.

What do you then expect from an emergency governor who was not prepared, and also surrounded himself with inexperienced administrators? Obviously nothing good can come out of this government, especially, when he has decided to abandon his primary duty of good governance to spending energy and wasting resources on frivolities.

Many people had termed AYB emergence as divine, if that is true, God must have been sorely disappointed with his performance in Kogi so far, as I know that God doesn’t take delight in inflicting untold hardship on his people. I also know that the kingdom of devil and his agent exist.

When I first received information that, AYB is funding the recall of Senator Dino Melaye, I took it as one huge joke but after spending millions of Kogi State money on a senseless protest at the INEC Abuja office, and now spending hundreds of millions collating signature in this futile effort, I concluded that it is time to speak up against this insensitivity of the governor to the plight of Kogi people.

If the governor have so much money to spend on this type of wasteful exercise why did he not use such money to pay civil servants/pensioners he has been owing for more than 15 months? why can’t he use such huge funds to empower thousand of unemployed women and youths? why can’t AYB direct the energy and resources to get our children who have been at home for five months back to school?

The planting season came without any support to the farmers from AYB government in form of farm inputs and implements (how then can we regain our lost status as “the food basket of the nation”).

The complete failure today to get people surrender their voters card for a fee is a strong signal that the exercise have failed despite the huge resources deployed. My advice to AYB is to sit up and serve the people he has mandate to work for, four years is the term, and what happens thereafter will largely depend on Kogi people perception about his service to them.

Let me also advice that, the appointees in Kogi West make more enemies for AYB government, and funnily too most of them cannot deliver their polling units during election, remember in 2015 they all worked for PDP but lost to APC, and I must tell you that they will lose even more in subsequent elections. Those appointee “playing the childish game of a futile recall bid” cannot succeed in recalling Senator Dino Melaye, so stop wasting our resources and our time.

Finally, AYB can still do damage control by recalling these jesters who are exploiting the current crisis to make money for themselves but end up creating more enemies for AYB, reconcile with Senator Dino Melaye and APC exco for the benefit of the State, and stop getting enmeshed in avoidable controversies.

This will allow AYB to concentrate his energy on delivering good governance, and rebuild the prospect for his political future. Also, I call on Senator Dino Melaye to sheath his sword, reconcile with AYB and work with AYB for the benefit of Kogi people.

A word is enough for the wise.

  • Dino Melaye in another audio allegedly reveals how he faked own ‘assassination attempt’

Dino Melaye in another audio allegedly reveals how he faked own ‘assassination attempt’

Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) has reportedly revealed how he intentionally fabricated false evidence against others in his alleged assassination case, using the police.

In an audiotape, published by Sahara Reporters, the senator tells Muhammed Audu, the son of late former Governor of Kogi State Abubakar Audu how he used his connections with the police to frame someone referred to as “Edward” (believed to be Edward Onoja, the Chief of Staff to the current Kogi State Governor), in the alleged assassination attempt on him at his country home.

Melaye had reported an assassination attempt on his life at his home, in Ijumu on April 15, and on April 29, the police arrested six persons, including the chairman of Ijumu Local Government area, Taofik Isah, who were allegedly involved in the crime.

On the audiotape, Melaye, speaking mostly in Hausa, reveals to Muhammed that the assassination story was fabricated to rope in his opponent; stating also how he used police connections.

  • Alleged bribery tape: Melaye, judge must come clean, says Adeyemi

A former representative of Kogi-West senatorial district, Senator Smart Adeyemi, has demanded for thorough investigations into the leaked tape of a conversation held between his successor, Senator Dino Melaye and Justice Akoh Ikpeme.

Adeyemi, who was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2015 general election, made the call while speaking to newsmen in Abuja, on Sunday.

The conversation, which some said suggested the existence of a liaison bothering on corruption, has been trending online after it was first posted by an online medium, Sahara Reporters.

The former lawmaker explained that the conduct of Justice Ikpeme and her team during the sitting of the Elections Tribunal in Lokoja left so much to be desired.

Adeyemi said, “I hereby call for a thorough investigation by the appropriate authorities, that is, the Chief Justice of the Federation, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General for the Federation, the National Judicial Council, the EFCC, the ICPC and the DSS.

“I wish to emphasise without any fear of contradiction that in the Nigerian judiciary, there are people of high integrity; who are God-fearing. Our judiciary is still one of the best in Africa and, indeed, our professionals compete favourably with the best of legal practitioners around the globe.

“Now, to the kernel of this discourse; after the judgment of Justice Akon Ikpeme at the National Assembly Tribunal sitting in Lokoja, the people of our senatorial district were shocked and perplexed as to the outcome of the ruling of the judge.”

He noted that his election petition before Justice Akon Ikpeme was hurriedly struck out for no justifiable reason. And that when his legal team proceeded to the Appeal Court to seek redress, the appellate court ruled that the matter should be heard, this he said led his team back to the tribunal.

Adeyemi said he and the members of his legal team sensed a foul play in the way his petition was struck out so they petitioned the President of the Court of Appeal asking that the case be assigned to another judge, adding that the president granted the request and re-assigned the case to Justice Diran Akintola.

Several attempts to get an official reaction from Melaye were unsuccessful as he neither picked nor returned calls made to his mobile telephone. He did not respond to a text message sent to him on the subject.

  • Alleged bribery tape: Anti-graft group asks EFCC to probe Melaye, judge

A group, Civil Society Network Against Corruption, has written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission demanding the investigation of the lawmaker representing Kogi-West senatorial district, Senator Dino Melaye, and Justice Akoh Ikpeme

An online news medium, Sahara Reporters, had on Tuesday released an audio clip in which the judge, who was handling an election petition involving Melaye and Senator Smart Adeyemi of the Peoples Democratic Party, allegedly demanded a bribe from Melaye in dollars.

In a petition signed by its chairman, Mr. Olanrewaju Suraju, the group, on Thursday, urged the commission to urgently commence a high-powered investigation by a team of forensic experts into the allegation.

The petition read in part, “In the recordings which capture the telephone conversation between Justice (Mrs.) Akoh and Mr. Melaye, at two different times, the judge is overheard asking Mr. Melaye to give her a bribe in US dollars.

“She also sought Mr. Melaye’s assistance for a person he repeatedly referred to as her ‘daughter’ to secure a job at the Cross River State Ministry of Health, with the senator reassuringly bragging that he had already spoken to Governor Ben Ayade.

“It is worth noting that sometime in 2016, Justice Ikpeme dismissed a petition by Smart Adeyemi, Mr. Melaye’s opponent at the 2015 Kogi-West senatorial district election — in accordance with the plot of reaffirming the alleged electoral infractions associated with the emergence of Mr. Melaye.”

The coalition stated that in view of the gravity of the allegations, the EFCC must urgently commence a high-powered investigation by a team of forensic experts into the allegations.

The CSNAC said the fight against corruption would remain deficient in the face of unbridled electoral fraud and manipulation if nothing was done.

Efforts to get Melaye’s reaction did not succeed. Several calls made to Melaye’s phone to react to the publication were not picked. One of our correspondents also sent a text and WhatsApp message to the lawmaker to either confirm or deny the tapes but he did not reply any of them.

Melaye had, however, denied bribing the judge, adding that the voice recording was fake.

The lawmaker had, in a message on his official Twitter handle, said Sahara Reporters was fabricating lies against him because he had sued the medium and the case was about to come up for mention in court.

He said, “Sahara Reporters and ‘awada kerikeri’; using voice-over to malign me because my case with them comes up in few days’ time, June 5, 2017.”

  • Assassination attempt on Melaye: Court grants N1m bail each to suspects

A Kogi High Court sitting in Lokoja has granted bail to five persons including the Administrator of Ijumu Local Government Area, Taufiq Isah, charged with alleged attempt to assassinate Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye.

Justice Arome Akogwu, on Monday held that the three weeks the accused spent in custody was far beyond the period allowed by the constitution.

The trial judge said the defendants, through their counsel, A.M. Aliyu in his oral application for bail, had undertaken to attend their trial, adding that the prosecuting counsel did not object to the presumption of innocence pleaded by Aliyu.

Against this backdrop, Akogwu granted the defendants bail in the sum of N1m each with one surety in like sum.

Consequently, the judge adjourned the case.
